Spotlight completely broken even after troubleshooting

Ok , i must say i HATE Spotlight. I always have, mainly because it never has worked fast enough for me, and has been problematic since day one.
Having said that I am still forced to use it to find things on my system but now it's completely broken. When I type in the Spotlight window, it hangs even after the first letter, like it usually does, but now it has added a new trick in that it refuses to find anything at all.
Fine. I'll force OSX to rebuild the database.
Go into terminal, type in the appropriate command that 100 billion posts in discussion say to do, and I get nothing. It does nothing. No rebuild. Nothing. I check Activity monitor to see if it's working. Nothing. This is also after I've trashed the prefs and Spotlight refuses to even build a new prefs file.
So, I go to System prefs, open the Spotlight tab, and try to drag my volume to the privacy window to get it to dump the dbase. The volume never shows up. Try adding it using the button. Nothing.
I trashed the Finder prefs too, and at least that fixed the problem with Finder locking up every time I did a Get Info on a file, but didn't help Spotlight at all.
One other minor good thing is, once I trashed the Spotlight prefs, at least now my system will reboot in under 5 minutes time, since I'm sure that Spotlight was the cause of that problem as well.
Dear Apple. Spotlight *****. In the meantime can someone offer other suggestions BESIDES reinstalling Tiger. Thanks.

Bryan,
I don't know about you but re-installing the entire OS should only be a desperate last measure. I haven't done it in years, and hope never to have to, since it would require at least a full day of my time, what with finding all the upgrades (on a dialup connection !!!), installing them, and then re- inputting all my data into the various places where it's needed. And yet that's what we now regularly find TIger users advised to do, just because of one dumb thing: Spotlight. And even if you DO go down this route and re-install Tiger, it's a sure bet something will go wrong again with Spotlight anyway.
ONe of the simplest, quickest things any computer user needs to do is find a file, any file, fast, and then get on with whatever it was they needed the file for. Apple seems to think we find the process so fascinating that we could spend the whole day doing it.
Try Easyfind instead of Spotlight. It's far from ideal but as things stand with the Mac OS, it's the only way to find your files.
You can download it from here
http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/index.html
Oh, BTW, did you know that in a desperate attempt to make Spotlight work, Apple decided that it won't index everything?
I hope Easyfind makes your life a little better

  • Firefox opens but completely unresponsive even after reinstall

I'd been having problems with Firefox hanging. It didn't appear to have anything to do with any of my addones, as I continued having problems even after disabling them--first one at a time, then all of them. Now after updating to the new version, (thinking that might be the problem) it will open but then immediately hangs (I am unable to even try any of the "fixes"): Error mesasge in toolbar "Firefox is not respponding". I tried completlyuninstalling and reinstalling and that didn't work either. Now the first time I uninstalled and reinstalled I was given the option of deleting my presonal preferences as well, essentially reinstalling a factory fresh Firefox browser. I said no,. Well when the reinsiall didn't work, I tried uninstalling again but this time the option didn't even come up. I have also tried a systm restore without effect. In addition I have run a complete virus scan with AVG and I'm coming up clean. There are several odd things about this glitch: At some point an addon that synchonized my FF favorites with my other browsers erased the back ups on the other browsers (it isn't supposed to do that if shut off as far as I know or I would have chosen a different method). I can't locate my FF favorites in order to save the file (I really want to keep them). The favorites bar is still on the toolbar, so they do seem to be intact on FF, of course I can't access anything. I am completely flummoxed given that even uninstalling and reinstalling hasn't worked. I am not getting any other error messages other than that the browser is not responding. I am currently using Windows 7 on a gateway netbook. The only thing that might possibly have anything to do with this is that at some point some program changed my home page and search engine to Delta. I suspect it was Vuze, but I had selected no and aborted the installation. I still had to manually change them back to my personal defaults. Obviously that shouldn't have affected my browser in this way. The only two other programs I've installed within this time period were from Giveaway of the day and Games giveaway of the Day both reputable websites. None of the feedback from these two programs indicated anything about hijacked home/search engines from other users--who would most definitely be kicking up a fuss. So I have two basic issues: Fixing FF and saving my favorites from FF. Tried again, making sure that the AVG was off, and while it didn't hang the first second, it started hanging as soon as I opened a web page or the add on page. Also note that I cannot install the troubleshooter. I saved the program but it won't install or even apparently recognize that I have FF installed.

  • IMac Finder crawling, unusable even after troubleshooting. help!

Torturously slow Finder in my Intel iMac 2.16ghz OS 10.4.11.
It can take it over a minute to load basic Finder windows. It can take five minutes to get from command- print to actually printing a photo from iPhoto, running the Spinning Beachball of Death for a minute or two each time something is clicked (drop-down menu, etc). Even trying to scroll, or move a window, brings up SBOD for interminable periods before it responds. Spotlight is slow and unreliable. Very slow to start up, very slow to log in. Again, SBOD between all actions. It's been gradually more slow over a couple months, but now it suddenly became unusable.
Safe Boot doesn't change it at all.
Plenty of free HD space and RAM, those aren't an issue.
What i have done, all ineffective:
    • run Repair Permissions and Disk Utility (First Aid). No problems found.
    • tossed Finder prefs and sidebar prefs
    • tried Safe Boot. NO CHANGE whatsoever.
    • tried another user account. It was faster in some tests i did, such as iPhoto operations, but that user has only a fraction of the files. And there were still random inexplicable Finder slowdowns while loading Finder windows etc., slow to quit apps, etc... just not as bad as in my User.
    • removed all startup items from my login, which was all 3rd-party stuff.
    • since slowdowns seem to have started with a Lexmark wireless-network printer install a few months ago, i trashed everything i could find having to do with lexmark (the printer was junk and i got rid of it within 6 weeks anyway).
    • I updated the Wacom Tablet driver that i know was outdated (however, i don't have the tablet hooked up).
    • i disconnected off all non-essential peripherals- everything except the keyboard ( a MacAlley, with an apple mouse) and the DSL modem.
    • Tried Safe Boot again after all of above. No change.
i watched Activity Monitor. Very little CPU usage shown at any given time. However, during the slowdowns, Monitor shows "not responding" for relevant applications i've tried to do something in, including Finder and also something called "System UI Server". Eventually, the app responds and the "not responding" goes away in activity monitor.
other details that may be relevant:
    • this iMac sometimes freezes up with what looks like a logic board/graphics chip problem... suddenly video goes awry and clusters a lot of fragmented graphics at top of screen, with rest of screen black. The only way to recover is a hard shutdown, either by holding the power button down or unplugging it.
I really don't want to have to re-install the OS if not necessary, as my install disk is 10.4.3 and i'd have to re-update it all the way to 10.4.11 (i have found i have to do a couple intermediate combo updates to avoid problems).
Do y'all think this is an OS problem, a hardware problem, or what?
Suggestions of what to do now?
PS, urgent, cuz i need to print (or at least export to a flash drive, to move to my iBook) a bunch of images i need for a studio tour.... tomorrow!

What if i boot this clone on my laptop (a G4 iBook with the same amount of RAM) and see how it runs?
    Intel iMac 2.16ghz, iBook G4 1.3ghz
Won't work, unfortunately. The clone carries an Intel-specific version of Tiger, which won't run on your PPC iBook.
And if i boot from the clone on the iMac and it runs fine (or, at least, as it was running when the backup was made), that would specifically incriminate the iMac's hard drive, not its other hardware, wouldn't it?
Yes, and so potentially a good diagnostic tool, but I'm not sure it would be totally safe. If the problem is instead bad RAM in the iMac, and you ran the clone from there, I think there would be a chance that the clone could become corrupted. You would then lose your only backup.
It would be nice if there were an "extra" external drive available. That way you could use the iBook to make a second identical "test" clone on it, using your current iMac clone as the source. You could then boot the iMac from the 2nd clone as you proposed, without fear of losing your only backup.
    Regarding your install DVD(s):
    Intel iMac 2.16ghz OS 10.4.11.
This machine came with grey machine-specific DVDs, I believe 10.4.7 or later.
All i have is my 10.4.3 full retail install DVD.
That is PPC specific, as well as being an earlier Tiger version than the one that came with your machine. It will not re-install Tiger on your Intel iMac.
Disk Utility says HD has no problems (run booted from DVD).
I'm surprised at this. I didn't think an Intel mac would boot from a retail Tiger DVD even just to run Disk Utility.
I'd suggest obtaining the original install disks for your iMac even if you eventually install Leopard. They contain the Apple Hardware Test, and also the original bundled software set, should you ever need to re-install these. Unlike retail DVDs, they should be inexpensive - call Apple and ask; have your serial number available.

    5. changing chords and usb ports
    6. resetting my iPad and deleting all the content (after storing the backup in iCloud)

  • I cannot permanantly remove an add-on, even after troubleshooting.

I have been having difficulty deleting an add-on that I did not install in the first place. It is called "Plus-HD-1.2 0.93.199", and claims to be an extension that automatically sets YouTube videos to HD. It does not do that, and instead waits in stasis for a while and then turns random couplings of words into green links to who-knows where (I have not clicked on any in order to further prevent other problems). I figured out it was this add-on specifically by noting that I never installed it, combined with the fact the green links stopped after I disabled it.
I have tried all of the troubleshooting steps listed in the main sections devoted to clearing unwanted add-ons, as well as using my antivirus browser cleanup and completing a system restore to the furthest possible point. The only thing I have yet to do is reset my Firefox browser to original settings. No matter what I do, the add-on bypasses the blocking of unwanted add-ons, reinstalls itself, and turns on after every shutdown. I know that I was not the one to install it, because if I want a YouTube video set to HD, I set it to HD myself.
Please, what do I do to get rid of this? Is this a problem for anyone else?

Thank you very much! That seemed to do the trick.

I was having trouble purchasing candy crush updates (for no apparent reason, as it has been fine previously).   I thought perhpas I needed to download some new software and promptly started the IOS 6 update.   It installed and then asked me to complete the final few steps by signing in with my apple id.   When I try to do that it says "it cannot connect to the server".   I have tried turing it off and on and over riding it, but it won't let me do anything at all now on my ipad mini.
Can anyone help?   I literally can't function!!!!

You can't override it no matter what you do. The device has to connect to the server to complete the iOS update. You could try rebooting the iPad and see if that lets you connect to the server after it starts up.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If that will not work, you can try connecting to iTunes on your computer and see if the activation will complete. Sometimes when thes activation issues arise, you end up having to restore the device again, but first things first. Reboot and see what happens.

  • After removing malware Firefox is still broken even after uninstall/reinstall, yet other browsers have no problems with links opening multiple unwanted windows.

I removed malware from my new Windows 7 pro 64 bit PC. I have reinstalled Firefox multiple times to try and resolve the problem, even deleting the Mozilla folder from programs on the C drive. Whenever I click on a link on a webpage in Firefox, multiple unwanted tabs and windows open up making Firefox virtually unusable. Resetting Firefox doesn't help. I installed Chrome and do not get these popups. The malware must have caused some damage related to Firefox that will not allow Firefox to function normally even with a fresh install. I would prefer to use Firefox.
I don't recall the name of the malware.

The cause is most likely the preferences file in your profile folder. That file contains your personal settings, so it doesn't get deleted when you reinstall/update Firefox. The reset feature also retains your preferences file.
Instead of doing a mass delete of all your settings, you can try identify the culprits and reset them individually.
    # In the [[Awesome Bar - Find your bookmarks, history and tabs when you type in the address bar|Location bar]], type '''about:config''' and press '''Enter'''. The about:config "''This might void your warranty!''" warning page may appear.
    # Click '''I'll be careful, I promise!''', to continue to the about:config page.
    # Click on the '''Status''' column, to sort your preferences by status, and group all the ''user set'' preferences together. They should appear in bold.
    # If you see any preference that look suspicious, just '''right-click''' on it, and select '''Reset'''.
If you're still not sure which ones to reset, you can post most of them here easily. Go to '''Help > Troubleshooting Information''' then click '''Copy text to Clipboard'''. Open a reply to this post, and go to '''Edit > Paste''' to paste the info from your Troubleshooting Information page.

The autocomplete on my navigation bar has been broken for a while. I have tried all the suggestions given on the firefox help website but it hasn't fixed it. I am currently running firefox 3.6 since I'm still using a mac 10.4.11 I don't think I can update past that version. • DAQmx broken even after full re-install

I’m having a nightmare problem with DAQmx libraries having somehow become corrupt in my LabVIEW installation on my laptop. It's LV8.5 and I'm on Windows XP SP2.
The problem is that they can’t find the nilvaiu.dll. I get the error: "nilvaiu.dll a dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed." I have checked and the dll is most definitely there in both C:\WINDOWS\System32 and C:\i386.
Having googled around, I found the problem mentioned in a few places and have followed the recommendation to do a clean re-install which I have done. I followed the instructions that had been sent from NI tech support using MSIBlast, cleaned out everything including the repository entries and then reinstalling from scratch. But the problem is still there!
I have tried to mass compile the DAQmx libraries and get a sequence of "Bad VI" errors (log attached).
In desperation I have also tried copying both the nilvaiu.dll and the DAQmx folder from vi.lib from a working installation on another machine but to no avail.
Also, when I start up my laptop, I get the error “nidevmon application failed to initialize properly”. This also should have been dealt with by the reinstall but hasn’t so I suspect these two problems are related.
It’s worth pointing out that my laptop is a new machine which I recently migrated from my old laptop which was on it’s last legs. The migration tool I used successfully migrated all software except for device drivers so I suspect there’s something which DAQmx or nilvaiu.lld depends on which is not installed properly but since it doesn’t give me any helpful errors or any indication as to what it’s dependant on I have no hope of tracking this down.
I have also tried doind a "repair" from the "add and remove applications" angle but also to no avail.
Any clues would be most welcome as I'm at the end of my teather with this.

This is really a long-shot but have you checked with any security conflicts on your machine?  Are there issues with firewall or permissions?  I am just recently running Vista and have had some odd issues.  For instance, I cannot write to a file or create a file in "C:\" without some sort of irritating security message.  You could try to run LabVIEW.exe as an administrator to see if that helps.  Navigate to your LV directory (something like "C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.5"), right-click the exe, select properties and then check the "Run this program as an administrator" box.
Another parting thought is a possible conflict with any virus scanning software.  You might want to track those things down, turn them off, and then test your problem again.  This could just be Mircosoft's way of subtly saying "All your base are belong to us!".

  • Registry Settings used by itunes missing even after troubleshooting?

Dell recently came out to replace a bad optical drive on my 9 month old desktop using Windows 7. Everything was working properly when this morning I tried to start itunes and I received the error message "The Registry Settings using by itunes drivers for importing and burning are missing...please reinstall itunes." Itunes will then open but none of my music, apps or playlists are showing. I did a repair--no change. I uninstalled all Apple software per the instructions on the Apple Support website then reinstalled itunes--no change. I found another support page on their website regarding filters in the Registry Editor (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2615) so I followed those instructions--still no change. What am I doing wrong?? Thank you for any help you can provide!

  • Early automation even after troubleshooting

    Hi guys,
It seems a lot of folks are posting about Logic reading automation early. The usual fix is preferences > audio > general > sample accurate automation > volume, pan, sends, plugin parameters. I have selected this.
Some have also reported having problems when their project start point is before 1.1.1.1. Mine is 1.1.1.1.
Also mentioned around the net is preferences > automation > snap offset. Mine is set to -5 ticks, which is tiny- my screenshot is showing more than a beat.
My screenshot shows basic automation of the linear phase EQ plugin and as you can see by position of my timeline, the gain on my high shelf should be at 0db but it has started to dip early.
Any and all help is welcome here- it's obviously impossible to work like this!

I can believe it, as the LP EQ induces extra latency ("straight" EQ's usually do not), and this extra latency is not visually compensated for (which is indeed (still) a flaw in Logic). Can you actually also hear the filter closing prematurely?
Can you go back to your first example and see if and how much of a difference it makes if you turn off all Plugin Latency compensation in the preferences?
Also, when certain latencies start building, just restarting coreaudio* from within Logic can reset that.
*Go Logic Pro>Preferences>Audio>Devices, untick and retick Enable Core Audio, close the window, core audio will be restarted (instruments get reloaded, as do samples), and any accumulated latency will be reset.

  • VIP Mailbox Empty even after Notifications show up

    Hello there guys
The mail app has been acting up on me lately. The craziest thing that is happening to me however, is that the VIP mailbox is completely empty even after I have received mail notifications (they also appear on my NC).
I have tried rebuilding the mailbox twice with no success, and I am baffled because I have the exact same VIP mailboxes set up on my phone (that's the magic of iCloud) and it displays properly there.
    Thank you beforehand

    Hi,
In the Messages Menu > Preferences > General section.
Tick the box on the line about "When I Quit, Set my Status to Off Line"
This will stop the IMAgent support app form "listening" to the AIM. Jabber or even Yahoo servers for 'new' messages.
In Messages beta it also seemed to work for the iMessages account but it no longer seems to do this.
It is this "feature" to Listen to the servers that makes this bit the correct function
Whether I am logged into accounts on Messages or not, whether the app is even open or not, I get a loud *ding* and a banner pop-up when someone sends me an IM, text or iMessage.
For the iMessages account you should untick the "Enable this Account" box to be sure.
If SMS Text Forwarding is Enabled then set the iPhone to Do Not Disturb so it too is isolated from the server and then an pairing or Sync to the iPhone number should also be excluded.
