Sppsvc is maxing out cpu core

I don't understand why sppsvc has such high CPU usage all the time. When you run loads of virtual machines, it's basically maxing out the CPU. All the windows server installations seem to have this problem (guests and hosts). I haven't installed
anything else; what could be the issue? It won't let me disable so I have to keep stopping it every few hours (Stop-Service -DisplayName "Software Protection")

Hi aaronsace,
Since the high CPU used can caused many reasons, you can refer the following third party article to make a dump to analysis the root reason.

  • ITunes podcast update maxes out both cores on MBP 2.16

On my new macBook Pro 2.16Ghz, there aren't too many normal operations that will run my cpu cores up to 100% each, but updating my podcasts in iTunes does it every time.
Not even transcoding multiple h.264 video files gets my cpu above 50%. why is it that updating my podcast xml feeds in iTunes maxes out both cores? If it starts taking more than a few seconds to update, my fans kick in and start getting progressively louder until the update completes or I cancel the update. Has anyone one else experienced this? is this a flaw in the itunes binary?
I have about 8 feeds that I'm subscribed to (diggnation, twit, eMacCast, dl.tv, etc).

it only happens when a feed starts to take too long to update (5-10+ seconds). some feeds just kind of hang when its trying to update. it seems like its stuck in a loop or something like that.

  • Biztalk Server 2010 is Maxing Out CPU Frequently

    Hi,
Most of the time my production server is getting this issue Maxing Out CPU Frequently.
All the time i restart the biztalk server and clear the application pool the issue gets resolved.
Could any one advice me what is causing this issue.
    Thanks,
    Binu

there may be many reasons for cpu usage spiking to maximum.
you better use following tools to figure out whats going wrong

  • IPhoto 6.0.1 Maxes Out CPU

I have a new MacBook Pro 2.0 GHz running OS X 10.4.5 obviously and my iPhoto 6.0.1 (Universal) running in the background occupies 97-98% of one of the CPUs for as long as the program is running. I have a few thousand photos in the library and do not see any disk activity in Activity Monitor (like it was caching thumbnails or something).
Has anyone else had a similar experience with iPhoto or know what it is doing? I let it run all night and it is still happily maxing out that one CPU (10:42:09 hh:mm:ss currently).

  • OS X 10.4.3 Processes that Max out CPU

Everything was running perfectly normal until I upgraded to 10.4.3. I first noticed that my hard drive continually made noises as if it was accessing something. Secondly, I observed that after a half hour or so of using my computer, it would become unusable because everything would be so slow. I soon began to question what was the source of this and opened the Activity Moniter and realized that certain applications would automatically bring the CPU usage up to %100. This greatly affected my battery performance (ibook G4). I began to record which applications would max out the CPU and have come up with the following list (although I haven't had time to run through all applications):
    • Safari
    • Widgets
    • "WindowsServer" (Mail)
    • Dictionary
I am now using Firefox and refuse to use any of these applications (even though I need to sometimes). Is anyone else seeing this sort of pattern since they upgraded to 10.4.3 and if so have you found a solution? Or could it simply be a bad update (for some of us) that will simply be fixed in 10.4.4? If it is more than a isolated incedent, I hope that Apple will take note of this problem as it is adversly effecting their products performance.
    -Erik

Erik I don't think 10.4.3 is the cause of your CPU acting the way it is, when you upgraded did check, and repair permissions before and after? if not do so go to the activity monitor and check on all process to see if you can find the problem there. Please post back with your results.

  • 10.5.5 - AFP maxes out CPU usage

Since installing the 10.5.5 update on our Intel Xserves, one sharing AFP Home directories will periodically begin to max out its CPU usage, this seems to happen every 2 or 3 days.
Over the space of an hour or two, CPU usage of the AppleFileServer process will increase from floating around 5% - 25% to a solid 400% (it's a Dual, Quad Xeon server so that's one whole CPU).
As an experiment, I manually disconnected all connected users (about 75 connections, 40ish that were not idle). CPU usage remained a steady 400% with 0 client connections.
Issuing a serveradmin stop afp, gives the response 'AFP Status: STOPPED' as it should, but in actually fact the process is still there. Clicking 'Stop' via ServerAdmin.app has no effect either.
The only thing that seems to work is a reboot (currently I have scheduled a 'shutdown -r now' for 1am every day).
Like I said, no problems with AFP prior to 10.5.5.
I hope there is a fix for this in 10.5.6 as it is a major problem.

Same problem here with AFP. Seems to be even worse with 10.5.6. I have two servers with home directories both doing the same thing. Only a restart seems to stop it. We also have SMB, windows users, disconnected on a random basis. Everyone may get disconnected or about 1/2 of them. This happens once or twice a week. If we use server admin to change any ACL's the SMB users also get disconnected. We are looking at switching back to Windows servers. We have had these issues since switching our home directories last summer. We have been working with a local vendor and Apple SE with no resolutions.

  • Beginning of song play causes iTunes to max out CPU and rewrite library

I'm experiencing a strange problem with iTunes for Windows. Whenever a song plays, about 5 seconds after it starts, the CPU maxes out for 20-30 seconds. This occurs either when the next song plays in a playlist, when I manually start a song, or if I've paused a song in the middle and start playing it again. I used a process monitoring program, and it's not the iTunes process that maxes out the CPU when this happens, but the system process, and when it happens it always shows that it's writing to three files, sequentially in this order (with the first two being written to twice):
    1) [iTunes Music Folder]/iTunes Music Library.xml
    2) [iTunes Music Folder]/Temp File
    3) [iTunes Music Folder]/iT.tmp
    4) [iTunes Music Folder]/iTunes Music Library.xml
    5) [iTunes Music Folder]/Temp File
The "Temp File" has no extension. This is a really annoying problem; it's been happening for about two days, but I can't think of any associated system change. I'm running Windows XP SP 2 with iTunes 7.0.2.16. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I do have a very large library--about 6000 songs. However, it's been that large for a long time, with no problems. It seems like it usually just updates the library when it closes. If it's been doing it on every song play before, it hasn't been taking 30 seconds, but something so small that it doesn't show up on my process monitor, which I'm constantly paying attention to.
It doesn't seem like this is a hardware problem, but some setting or something that got changed to make it rewrite the entire library every time I edit it.
I did check the Windows Event Viewer and couldn't find anything helpful.
A couple other things that I've changed recently that could have an effect:
    1) Yesterday I set a bunch of songs to not come up on iTunes shuffle; before I hadn't used this setting.
    2) I attempted to make iTunes treat some mp3s as podcasts so that it would remember their play position. In the process of doing this, it decided that it wanted to re-download all of the back episodes of a particular podcast I subscribe to. I then figured out that you can set particular songs so it remembers their playback position, and instead just added those mp3s normally and set that option.
I unset the "don't use this song when shuffling" option for all songs, and also deleted my subscription to that podcast, to see if those things would have any effect, but they haven't. It seems like the podcast thing has something to do with this, though, because I think the problem started around the time that I tried that. Any thoughts?

  • Automatic updates maxing out CPU on windows server 2003

Since this last roll out of updates that have come through I have noticed on my 2003 servers that the automatic update service is maxing out the cpu.  The updates are simple downloading and are set for a deadline, so the updates have not officially
installed yet. They are all virtual machines running in an VMware environment.  They are Server 2003 SP2 x86 machines. Any suggestions would be appreciated.  When I turn the automatic update service back on the cpu pegs.

I read that IE and Automatic Updates are correlated and if there is a cumulative update waiting for IE then this can cause the CPU issue.  For me I had IE 6 still on my Windows 2003 servers and I installed this update that came out just recently:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=41033
After you install this and reboot, then things settle down and you will see the rest of the updates you've approved in WSUS ready to install (if you have any).
I'm pretty sure this will fix it for you.
Note - just for reference, the KB is KB2888505

  • Maxed out CPU Usage, happens suddenly, no obvious cause, please help!

I've had an XServe-G5 running well for about 18 months, with anywhere from 2-5 active users at one time. The server is only running AFP, Software Update & FTP services.
For the last 2 months, without warning, the CPU usage will max out, with only a small amount of disk & lan access with it.
I've found a less than ideal solution . . . . the cpu max out seems to be linked to 1 or 2 users logged in at one time, but not always the same users, if these users disconnect then the CPU usage returns to normal. I haven't found a way to identify which user/users it is, so I disconnect them through 'Server Admin' one by one till I get a result.
This goes on up to 5 times a day. I've checked the AFP access log when the problem happens, but can't see anything there that isn't there normally, the error log has no events. When there are no users logged in, other than the local 'Admin', the problem does not occur.
We've resorted to only logging into the server when needed, but it's getting to be a major pain.
    Please help!

Many things can cause this. What do you see in "top"?
One example is when you hit the "corrupt .DS_Store" bug in AFP. See afp548.com for a discussion, e.g.:

  • Max Supported CPU Cores

I have a Core i7 860 CPU. This CPU has 4 real cores and 4 additional virtual cores.
While exporting some DV footage to mpeg2 APE seems like to use only one/two of the cores because I have only a CPU usage about 25%.
While different encoders like x264 or CCE are using around 98% of the cpu power.

PRE7 takes full advantage of all QuadCore Q6600 CPUs in my W7-64-bit system ( Q: How much processing power does PRE7 need to convert a video? ). It's always possible that on your system it doesn't NEED to use all cores.

  • ITunes will not start up in Windows XP SP2 and maxes out CPU

    Hello all,
Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, or if this is a similar problem faced by others.
I have browsed the forums for hours trying to find a similar issue to my own, and have tried several solutions but none have worked. I have lost track of the amount of times I have re-installed iTunes.
Having recently aquired an 80Gb iPod Video, I set about re-loading all of my music as 192Kb AAC in iTunes. I have always used iTunes to download music, but this is the first time I have used it so much, having previously used WMP to listen to my music collection.
At some stage last week it stopped functioning, freezing everytime I started it up, and subsequently forcing me to use Task Manager to quit.
Sometimes it would just freeze as soon as I clicked in the window, other times it would let me input my sign-in details before freezing whilst 'Accessing iTunes Store'.
I did recently upgrade to iTunes 7.2, and decided to upgrade some of my files to non-DRM, and it had been working fine up until some point last week.
Which is what I really can't understand. I had downloaded 7.2 a week or so before this happened, so could it really be an issue with the non-DRM tracks? I noticed in a previous post this being an issue, and not to upgrade, and so I attempted to install an earlier version 7.1, but still had the same issue with it freezing.
Something I noticed today was that the Apple web page would not load, as the Quicktime plugin would not initiate. Could it be a Quicktime issue?
Someone suggested to me it could be a issue with Norton?
Another suggested it could be down to Automatic Updates.
Having checked both of these avenues, there don't appear to be any programs downloaded onto my computer that would affect iTunes.
All of my music is stored on an external USB 2.0 HDD. I can't imagine it being an issue with that, as I can access all of my files on that fine through My Computer.
Apologies for the long an convoluted issue. Any help will be much appreciated. If I have missed anything I shall post again.

You can try a couple things. You may wish to try and rebuild your iTunes Library. At times if this gets corrupted it could cause possible freezing when launching itunes or using iTunes.
Posted below is the article for that.

    or
iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues

You will also want to try a basic Uninstall and Install of the iTunes Software. Also ensure you have the latest version of iTunes and Quicktime. If you get the iTunes bundle it will include the update for both.
You may also wish to create a new user and see what kind of results you get. If the issue is still the same. You may want to follow the article below. It speaks about cleaning out Apple Software and hidden files and folders. Since all your music is on a backup HD you do not have to worry about deleting any of it as it is already backed up.

  • Bluetooth daeman maxes out CPU

    Hi all,
    I have a mid 2007 24" iMac running 10.6.3.
I've noticed recently that after a while the machine runs slow, and checking the activity monitor the blued process (Bluetooth) is using a considerable percentage of CPU. The only bluetooth device I have installed is a Targus mouse.
Killing the process (it automatically respawns) occasionally fixes it, but not always. A restart will fix it.
A google search did find this post http://cpenniman.blogspot.com/2010/02/blued-process-is-killing-my-cpu.html - I followed the instructions but it didn't seem to help. I did notice that upon restart all my bluetooth devices were still in the preferences so I guess I didn't remove all the plists...
I have removed all bluetooth devices and I'm using a wired mouse (how quaint) and I'll let you know how I go, but has anyone had any similar occurences?

You need to look at the logs and, ideally, the hits that Apache is trying to process.
I'd guess that what you're seeing is a bad script (CGI, .php, etc.) that's running away. Since the script runs within Apache it manifests itself as a cpu load for httpd even though it's not Apache per se.
You could also try enabling /server-status to get a real-time picture of the web server load. That way when you see these processes you should be able to see the requests that are generating them.
    Edit /etc/apache2/httpd.conf and look for/add:
    <Location "/server-status">
    SetHandler server-status
    Order deny,allow
    Deny from all
    Allow from 127.0.0.1
    </Location>
Now you can hit http://localhost/server-status on your server to see what Apache is doing in real-time.

  • Skype maxes a cpu core periodically for several seconds and does not respond

Skype 7.7.85.103 uses a lot of cpu periodically, and is not reacting for several seconds.
I am not sure, if this is related to advertisements changing in these intervals, but if it is, then this should not be happening.
I already did a clean install (inclusive removing EVERYTHING from the registry), and it did not help.
I tried as administrator - once again, it did not help.
It is less visible when I am connected to a powersource, as the cpu is then going faster, but it still happens.
And it is not the first version that has had this problem.
In case it may help, there is the dxdiag.txt attatched.

hello, in order to further diagnose the issue, could you run firefox in safe mode once & see if the problem is occuring there too. please report back afterwards, thank you...

  • Cpu use maxed out on export

working with a mac pro, 4 core 3 gig speed, 8 gigs ram, fcpx. I shot off a logitech webcam in quicktime, 5 gig file, imported to fcpx, exported thru a cpmpressor preset for vimeo, 720p. It took 5 hours to export and between 98% and 100% cpu.
something has got to be wrong, any suggestions?

Firstly I would expect the CPUs to be maxed out since FCP & Compressor are designed to use all the computing power available.  As to the time, well it depends on so many parameters.  An input movie in a compressed format that is 5GB quite big - I find a 15 min 1080p movie can take 40 min to export to file also on a 4-core  Mac Pro 2013 and I would guess that yours must be at least an order of magnitude larger so I'm not sure that 5 hours is totally unreasonable, (especially if you are not doing background rendering).  Some-else with more experience than I may be able to make a better judgement if you supply more details.
    Geoff.
