SQL Developer 3.2/4EA1 not fully reading TNSNAMES

Hi,
We are using both 3.2 and the 4EA1 versions, and have found that both are not fully reading the TNSNAMES file.
In the TNSNAMES file, we have databases that are configured with either SID or SERVICENAME.
It isn't excluding databases setup with either.
Can anyone suggest what the issue might be?
Cheers,
Russell H.

This is just a shot in the dark, but have you checked your tnsnames file to see if anything besides the entry name (and commented lines) begins in column one?  Although sqlplus will usually parse such entries successfully, some of the other tools have had issues with them in the past... they seem to misparse the entry, which often messes up the processing of subsequent items.
Here's a quick example, with spaces replaced by periods for readability:
# good entry
mydb=
..(DESCRIPTION=
....(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=myhost)(PORT=1521))
....(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=myservice))
# bad entry
mydb=
(DESCRIPTION=
..(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=myhost)(PORT=1521))
..(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=myservice))
If memory serves, only the entry name is actually supposed to begin in column 1... pretty sure I found that documented somewhere, back when I first encountered the issue.  So if this is indeed your problem, I suspect that the official verdict would be that your tnsnames file is bad and needs to be corrected.
Again, this is just a wild guess.

In the new SQL Developer Team Announcements sticky note posted a couple of days ago:
<li>Is "SQL Developer Team Announcements" the right title? It appears to be hard enough to get people to read these things anyway, and this suggests that it's either targetted at the SQL Developer Team, or contains information about them.
<li>The SQL Developer Exchange link for Enhancement Requests links to the sticky note, not the Exchange Feature Requests page.
<li>Suggest using "Forum Tips" or some other alternative instead of "Forum Etiquette": "etiquette" too obscure a term?
<li>"When asking a question, provide all the details that someone would need to answer it.": Can these be spelled out? e.g. SQL Developer version, DB version, Java version, OS etc.

Sue, thanks for the prompt attention.
3 sounds good: News, Posting Guidelines, and a FAQ for the rest? (sorry, I'd lump "collateral" in with "etiquette" as clarity goes).
    A FAQ with Qs like:
    <li>How do I report bugs?
    <li>Where do I request enhancements?
    <li>Where can I find extensions?
may be the best way to handle the "collateral" as it can retain the same (easily understood title) whilst being extendable to cover virtually anything.
As an example, I think Mark Drake has handled this well on the {forum:id=34} forum.

  • Query on SQL Developer Connections Tree Does Not Display Objects

Hi Gurus, Could you please clarify on the below. As per the note ID 1458753.1, SQL Developer Connections Tree Does Not Display Objects to user in order to access database objects outside the owned schema/account. ------------------------- By default, and without granting wide privileges such as DBA, a user will only see his or her own objects in the first level object nodes under their connection.  Objects in other schemas must be accessed via the Other Users node under the connection. This is the intended functionality/display in SQL Developer. ------------------------- Is there any other way we can achieve this? Requirement is very common - user A owns all objects and user B granted read/read-write privileges on user A objects. Now user B wants to Display user A objects in the corresponding objects node of SQL developer. Could any one shed some light here? Thanks Venu

First off, there is a dedicated SQL Developer forum where lots of the developers hang out. Those folks are way more knowledgable that we are about the tool.
That said, I have no problem displaying dates. Do you just have a problem with this particular query/ field/ table? Or does it affect all dates? What version of SQL Developer are you using? 1.1 is out now.

  • SQL Developer Blocked and is not allowed to connect to database ORA-200001

SQL Developer Blocked and is not allowed to connect to database gives ORA-200001.
i found on net that DBA can write triggers which can deny connection to database from certain appplication.
so i want a way to change application name so that when it connects to database
the V$SESSION will have different value (other than SQL Developer) in column PROGRAM and/or MODULE (which i think is used by dba to restrict the connection).
    one more way is
i am using jdbc url to connect to database
in java we can change properties of connection to change the PROGRAM in V$SESSION.
but i am not java expert so dont know how and where to make the changes
either way my aim is to connect to database such that V$SESSION will have different value (other than "SQL Developer") in column PROGRAM and/or MODULE

This is not system configration or credential issue.
This is a check which is put DBA using logon trigger
to check certain user loging in using certain application.
only some users using particular username are getting this error when they try to logon using oracle sql developer
the same users when uses different username(some generic user names created to access database) to access the same database then they are able to login.
similarly if they login using SQL navigator they are able to login with both their own and the generic user name
more over of all the database instances this is only happening on some of the instances and all of them are development instances.
    following will help you understand
    USER | DBUSERNAME | DATABASE | APPLICATION | ACTION
    X | X | DB1 | Oracle Sql Developer | Blocked
    X | G(Genric) | DB1 | Oracle Sql Developer | Login Success
    X | X | DB1 | Sql Navigator/SqlPLus | Login Success
    X | G(Genric) | DB1 | Sql Navigator/SqlPLus | Login Success
    X | X | DB2 | Oracle Sql Developer | Login Success
    X | G(Genric) | DB2 | Oracle Sql Developer | Login Success
    X | X | DB2 | Sql Navigator/SqlPLus | Login Success
    X | G(Genric) | DB2 | Sql Navigator/SqlPLus | Login Success
I just want to bypass this check which i think uses V$SESSION and columns PROGRAM and/or MODULE to check the application used by particular user.
if i can override these values some where in oracle sql developer before loging in the DB then i can clearly pass this check and login to database.

  • SQL Developer not only reading tnsnames.ora

    Hello,
I have found a very odd behaviour in SQL Developer 1.2 (running on Windows 2000):
I have set TNS_ADMIN to point to a directory on a network drive residing on a Linux host. In this directory there were many backup files of tnsnames.ora created over time whose names followed the pattern tnsnames.ora.<timestamp> or tnsnames.bak or something similar. In SQL Developer in the "New database connection" dialog many TNS-entries showed up multiple times in the "Network alias" listbox. Only after removing all those backup files from the directory the behaviour of SQL Developer was correct and every entry only showed up once. I also found out that even when I moved the backup files to a new directory "tnsnames.bak" under the directory which TNS_ADMIN points to the entries showed up multiple times. After I renamed this directory to bak.tnsnames the behaviour was again correct. In my opinion SQL Developer should only read the file called tnsnames.ora and ignore all other files or directories with similar names.
    Kind regards,
    Christof Breker

    Various users reported this before.
Maybe others use multiple files, but at least there should be the option to read just this one.
    Regards,
    Kristof

I downloaded SQL Developer 1.2 and i try to create a sql server connection, but have problems with jdbc drivers. The documentation refer to :
    1. In SQL Developer choose Tools -> Preferences...
    2. Expand the "Database" option in the left hand tree
    3. Click on "Third Party JDBC Drivers"
    4. Click on "Add Entry..."
    5. Navigate to your third party driver jar file and choose OK
    This option is not.
    I need help...

  • SQL Developer and External Procedures not in tree.

Does sql Dveloper add external procedures to the object browser tree? I have SQL Developer 1.5 and if you have external procedures/functions before your regular PLSQL objects they will not display in the tree. I can make the tree work but the tree still doesn't capture the externals. Am I doing something wrong or should this be a feature request?

  • Links for SQL Developer and Data Modeler not working?

    Hi folks,
I tried to access the new SQL Developer and Data Modeler links posted in the April 1 message (and on the Oracle site) from a couple of machines with no luck (empty zip files) - is there an update to the links?
    Thanks!
    Tomo

In Firefox zero length zip. In IE loses connection to downloads.oracle.com.

  • JDK with SQL Developer 3.2.20 Not Latest Version 6 Update

    SQL Developer Team,
Why doesn't the new version 3.2.20.09 have the latest JDK 6 Update 37. It still has Update 35 which has security vulnerabilities.
Also, the download web page here
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/index.html
says it is Update 11 "Windows 32-bit - zip file includes the JDK1.6.0_11"
    Bob S

Why doesn't the new version 3.2.20.09 have the latest JDK 6 Update 37Timing. Update 37 was not available until 10/16. Update 35 (08/30) had only recently been included due to Oracle Cloud requirements.
As a convenience, one of the 32-bit Windows downloads includes a JDK. There is no commitment to provide the most recent update.
    Regards,
    Gary

  • SQL Developer 3.2 does not show warnings

In SQL developer 3.2, I am trying to compilie package. After compilation it shows following message in script output
    PACKAGE BODY package_name_pkg compiled
    Warning: execution completed with warning
Everytime I need to use 'SHOW ERRORS' command to see all above warnings.
Is there any other way to see these warnings without using show errors ?

Yes, you need to use the Procedure Editor.

  • SQL Developer - Database Export - Constraints not included in DDL

I have used the Database Export function available in the Tools menu but have been unsuccessful in getting the referential integrety and check contraints to export. These are the steps I take:
    Environment: Windows XP Professional.
    SQL Developer 1.5.1
    Tools>Database Export
In Source/Destination I select the filename and the database source and check:
    Show Schema
    Terminator
    Pretty Print
    Add Force to Views
    Include Grants
In Types to Export I check all except Data.
In Specify Objects I select the Schema I want to export.
None of the foreign_key or check constraints are shown but I select all of the objects.
    Export Summary
    File:C:\Documents and Settings\richardk.asbury\My Documents\EER\eer3.sql

    DDL Options
         Show Schema

There are numerous Check and Foreign_key constraints missing in created DDL.
    Im I missing a step?
    rasberry

Actually all tables were included and the Automatically Include Dependent Objects option was checked.
For an example, the first table exported A_EMIS_TOXIC_DTL had the following constraints:
    FK_A_EMIS_TOXIC_DTL2HDR     Foreign_Key
    NN_A_EMIS_TOXIC_DTL_ID     Check
    PK_A_EMIS_TOXIC_DTL_ID     Primary_Key
The primary key constraint was included in the DDL but none of the others.

  • Sql developer error -No more data to read from socket

    Hi
I have installed SQL Developer 10.5.5 on my mac os x.5
and oracle data base is 10.2
when i am making a new connection from sql developer i am getting this error
NO MORE DATA TO READ FROM SCOKET
I tried searching blogs but no luck yet.
    can any one help me....
    Thanks a lot!

That's typically an error on the database side. When I see it it I know the database is down and once I bring it up, then all is good again. Once the database is up and running, you then start SQL Developer and create a new connection? What type of connection are you creating?

Yes this was clean directory (I reinstalled twice already). I'm using Oracle Database 10g express edition and also Oracle 10g Standard Edition (same problem for both databases).
In the messages log I get:
    oracle.dbtools.raptor.oviewer.table.GridDataEditor java.lang.NumberFormatException.forInputString(NumberFormatException.java:48)
... and then each time I switch table:
    oracle.ide.model.IdeSubject Exception while updating observer[8]: Editor5

  • SQL Developer tool sometimes does not display data with date type

run the following query using the sql developer tool -
    select effective_date from table1 where id = 123;
(the effective_date is stored in the database as date.)
one record is returned with no date in the filed.
However, if I change the query to
    select to_char(effective_date, 'mm/dd/yyyy') from table1 where id = 123;
one record is returned with effective date.
    Why?
    Thanks for your help.
