SQL Developer 4.0: 'Open Declaration' bugs

There are several issues I have with this function:
1) Sometimes, when used, it would just "hang" the UI, loading the CPU for 50% for a few seconds.
2) It doesn't seem to work for functions/procedures outside packages, you have to use 'Popup describe' instead. Is that intended?
3) I don't know if it's actually related to 'Open Declaration', but Logging Page sometimes throws a pair oracle.dbtools.parser.plsql.DictionaryQuery errors, supposedly around the same time hangs occur I may be wrong on this one, but still thought it's worth reporting:
Error 1:

order by type, line and owner = :owner
Error 2:
ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis
The 'and owner = :owner' part is obviously misplaced, causing the error.
P.S. A bit off-topic: SQLDev gives me quite a lot of various warnings both on logging page and in console. They don't seem to break anything, but should I report them anyway? And should I create a separate thread for each group of these, if I do?

Okay, I've done some testing. It's far from exhaustive, but shows that 'Open Declaration' works differently in worksheet and package pl/sql editor, and that it depends on the case of the procedure/function that is inspected!
I also found out the cause of ORA-00907 message.
The cause of hangs also became somewhat possible to determine.
Sorry I couldn't test it more, but I already wasted about 2 hours on it, because I did it on our test (much slower) database, and each hang lasted about half a minute. I also didn't test inter-package 'Open Declaration' behavior, because I still have work to do. Hopefully what I found will be enough.
Also, another note is that "hangs" didn't burn the CPU while I tested it, unlike on production database.
We don't have HR schema anymore, so I unlocked SCOTT/TIGER forgotten by everyone, which had no functions/packages/whatsoever, only 4 tables.
All tests were done under 'SCOTT' user. Here's the test suite:
Creating the necessary function, procedure and package:
create or replace function z_test_opendecl_f return number as
begin
  return 1;
end z_test_opendecl_f;
create or replace procedure z_test_opendecl_proc as
begin
  null;
end z_test_opendecl_proc;
create or replace package z_test_opendecl_pack is
  function call_z_func return number;
  procedure call_z_proc;
end z_test_opendecl_pack;
create or replace package body z_test_opendecl_pack is
  procedure call_z_proc is
  begin
  --call lowercase external proc without schema
  --popup describe works
  --open declaration throws "PL/SQL unit Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PROC does not exist" message box
  --AND (nailed it!) writes ORA-00907 message I mentioned earlier in point (3) to logging page.
  Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PROC;
  --call lowercase external proc without schema
  --same behavior as above
  z_test_opendecl_proc;
  --call mixed case external proc without schema
  --same behavior as above
  Z_Test_Opendecl_Proc;

  end call_z_proc;
  function call_z_func return number is
  vRet number;
  begin
  --Same behavior as with procedures above
  vRet := z_test_opendecl_f;
  vRet := scott.z_test_opendecl_f;
  --Calling the procedure inside the package
  --without schema, uppercase
  --popup describe opens spec
  --open declaration hangs, then opens spec
  CALL_Z_PROC;
  --without schema, uppercase
  --popup describe opens spec
  --open declaration hangs, then opens spec
  Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_PROC;
  --with schema, uppercase
  --popup describe opens 'SCOTT' user popup
  --open declaration hangs, then opens spec
  SCOTT.Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_PROC;
  --Inline SQL, 'Open Declaration' behavior:
  select Z_TEST_OPENDECL_F --gives a messagebox, whatever the case
  into vRet
  from dual d
  where z_test_opendecl_f = 1 -- messagebox
  or scott.z_test_opendecl_f = 1 --opens declaration
  or CALL_Z_FUNC = 1 -- scrolls to function declaration
  or Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_FUNC = 1 --hangs, opens declaration
  or SCOTT.Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_FUNC = 1; --does NOTHING
  end call_z_func;
end z_test_opendecl_pack;
(Comments inside package body apply to Package Body Editor).
Here are the tests for worksheet:
--Worksheet tests

  vRet := Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_FUNC;
  -- call the package function - mixed case
  -- popup describe opens package spec
  -- open declaration hangs, then shows "PL/SQL unit CALL_z_func does not exist" messagebox
  vRet := Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_z_func;
  --inline SQL
  --Shows the same behavior
  select Z_TEST_OPENDECL_F --works
  into vRet
  from dual
  where Z_TEST_OPENDECL_F = 1 -- works
  or Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_FUNC = 1 -- hangs, but works
  or Z_TEST_opendecl_f = 1; -- messagebox
  --WITH SCHEMA SPECIFIED
  --Usual calls mostly exhibit the same behavior, except all of them hang on "Open Declaration" now
  -- call the package function
  -- popup describe opens 'SCOTT' user popup (!?)
  -- open declaration hangs, then opens package spec
  vRet := SCOTT.Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_FUNC;
  --inline SQL
  --Shows the same behavior
  select SCOTT.Z_TEST_OPENDECL_F --works
  into vRet
  from dual
  where SCOTT.Z_TEST_OPENDECL_F = 1 -- works
  or SCOTT.Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_FUNC = 1 -- hangs, but works
  or SCOTT.Z_TEST_opendecl_f = 1; -- messagebox
end;
There was also an error on production DB I wasn't able to reproduce while testing:
while editing package body, calling 'Open Declaration' on function name inside inline SQL did nothing - neither the message box appeared nor declaration was opened, it also doesn't hang.
I can't disclose the names, but it looks like this:
select myFunction(t.id,vLocalVar) into vLocalVar2 from tablename t;
We have a lot of objects on production, maybe it times out or something, I don't know. Autocomplete also doesn't work unless I call it explicitly with ctrl+space.
An assumption regarding the hangs: we have a ton of public synonyms and a lot of java objects; the hangs are probably related to poor java object querying performance discussed in neighboring topic.

  • SQL Developer crashing when opening or testing a connection

    SQL Developer closes abruptly when opening or testing a connection.
    Here's what I do.
    Open SQL Developer.
    Create a connection:
    Connection Name: [some string]
    Username: [username]
    Password: [password]
    Save password: checked
    Oracle tab:
    Connection type: TNS
    Connect Identifier: somedatabasename
    Then I click on "Test" and the application immediately quits. No error messages. The app does the same thing if I save the connection and try to expand its node on the list of connections.
    Mind you, if I use sqlplus like so:
    [username]/[password]@somedatabasename
    It connects just fine.
    I captured the output from the command console after SQL Developer crashed:

    @Jim:
    Thanks for your suggestion. After several hours of experimenting, I've managed to fix my problem by copying the ojdbc6.jar from my ODAC installation and replacing the one in [sqldeveloper root]\jdbc\lib
    To whomever has a similar issue: See my original post for what software I was using and their version numbers.

  • Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.0 Bugs, Resolution and workarounds

    The purpose of this thread is to list bugs discovered while using ORACLE SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.0
    Mainly with SQL SERVER 2005 and ORACLE 10g models.

    SQL Server Physical model doesn't save table identity column.
    here are the steps to get this bug:
    1. create a table in relational model with a column as an integer to be used as an identity.
    2. create or open a physical model for SQL-SERVER 2005
    3. open the table in the physical model
    4. edit the integer column property dialog
    5. tick the identity check box and close the property dialog
    6. save the model and close it
    7. open it again, you will find the identity check is removed! (probably not saved from the start)

  • Why does SQL Developer insist on opening up the package header?

    When expanding a package (clicking the '+') SQL Developer keeps opening up the package header (at least the first time you click it). I'm very rarely interested in viewing the header and it's annoying to have all those tabs open.

    See SQL Dev 2.1 RC1 - Expanding packages under Schema Browser
    Don't know if dev filed a bug against this, so to be sure you'd have to log a SR on Metalink/MOS.

  • SQL Developer error when opening

    Greetings all. I just downloaded the current SQL Developer version 1.5.1 Build 5440. Upon initial start up I got a Ordinal 2821 could not be found in libeay32.dll error. I downloaded the latest libeay32.dll (852 K-8/28/2008 2:03 PM modified date) into the c:\windows\system32 directory. Now I get a Ordinal 3288 could not be found in libeay32.dll error. There are several libeay32.dll files of different sizes in the openssl directory.
    I'm running Windows XP Pro service pack 3.

    The problem you hint is a known problem.
    If Java crashed with other application, the LIBEAY32.DLL librarry getting created can affect the SQL developer starting.
    Please rename your file "LIBEAY32.DLL" found under "c:\windows\system32" folder and then you should be able to launch SQL Developer.
    Regards
    Mireille

  • SQL Developer Problems and Feature Requests

    I’m in the process of comparing TOAD to SQL Developer and noticed the following bugs/features in SQL Developer:
    1. An error message is correctly displayed when a database password has expired, but there isn’t a way to go back into the database and change the password for that account. Can this critical feature be added?
    2. There is no option to connect as sysdba or sysoper.
    3. In the “New / Select Database Connection” window, I get the following error when double clicking on an existing connection defined using a TNS Network Alias: Status: Failure – no ocijdbc10 in java.library.path. Any ideas? Connection was initially defined using the Network Alias button. I can connect under the “Connections” window, but not in the “New / Select Database Connection” window. Any ideas?
    4. When displaying data in a table, the filter is not user friendly. You need to enter column names and the correct SQL syntax. It also does not allow you to cut and paste in column names. It would be very helpful/useful if it was more user friendly (GUI based) such as how Sorting is done and/or how it is done in TOAD.
    5. When viewing referential constraints on a child table, it shows you information on the parent, but not if the parent is a child to something else. If you were a parent, it would be nice to see all child and their children’s children. TOAD does a nice job showing parent and child tables via a tree structure.
    6. Comparing metadata between schemas would also be a very nice feature.
    I’m not sure if this is the place to post this but thought I would start here. Any feedback would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ken

    1: You can always right click and have it open an sql*plus window and that will prompt for the new password. But I do agree that support for this should be built in.
    2: This is a developer tool.. Use OEM for the dba stuff. I think that the worst thing that could happen to SQL Dev is to try to become everything for everyone like TOAD tries to.
    3: Search the forum. Other users ran into this and I believe there is a workaround.
    4: I like the current filtering on tables. So much simpler than most tools. I do agree that maybe there should be an advanced button with a filter builder and agree that column names should be copyable but would cringe if the free-form field disappeared. How many other tools can you write an inline query into the table viewer? Great feature IMHO

  • SQL Developer Crash

    I can make SQL Developer crash in the following way:
    Click on the "search" tool on the right side of the screen. Enter a package name to search for. Two results will come back, one for the package body, and the other for the package procedure listing. If you single-click (which I have figured out with trial-and-error) things work fine.
    Only problem is on Windows I usually expect to double-click on a dialog box like this, and when I do that I think SQL Developer tries to open two connections at once. Error messages about "connection busy" usually pop up.
    The worst scenario, which happens about 40% of the time, is that some sort of weird modal dialog box interaction can happen between the "searching" dialog box and the "connection busy" dialog box. I can't click anywhere else, can't even close SQL Developer from the Windows toolbar at the bottom of the screen. I have to kill it through Process Manager, which usually makes me lose a bunch of SQL queries and whatever else I've been working on.
    Suggestion: Prevent/catch double-clicking OR change the "search" form to use double and not single-clicking.
    Anybody else have this experience?
    Thanks,
    Josh

  • Oracle/ SQL Developer connection problem.

    I have installed Oracle 11 g and SQL Developer, When I open SQL Developer and try to make a new connection ( I name the connection, put a user name in, put my password in), I click on "Test" and I get this error:
    Status: Failure - Test failed: Listener refused the connection with the followong error:ORA-12505, TNS: listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor The connection descroptor used by the client was:localhost:1521:ex
    Can anyone explain this to me and help me resolve this issue I am having?
    Thank you in advance for your help

    Windows 7 Home ... will have challenges at some point, as Oracle may not be completely compatible with Windows 7.
    Aside from that, you may find firewall issues even if you are on the same machine, since the default connection from SQLDeveloper is to use the network (even loopback).
    First step is to verify that the database and listener are running and that the database is registered to the listener. TO do that, drop into command line and issue:

    XE =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = FCC003L)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)

      )and you will note the XE on the left side of the equal sign (which is a network alias), and one XE in the (SERVICE_NAME = XE) line. On YOUR system, the XE should be replaced by whatever you called your database (often 'orcl'). REMEMBER THIS ALIAS;-) and also make note of the host that your entry uses. If your host name changes because of DHCP, you're hooped (for a while).
    If the database is registered (shows up in the list), the next step is to make sure a userid is available. You could use 'system' (try to avoid using SYS since it is the master userid and if you mess that up, you mess up all your homework. In a production encvironment, every access to SYS will be audited.
    So, let's create a userid called me with (in 11g case sensitive) password 'myself'. Make sure that user is allow to log in (create session) and create a table.

    Disconnected from Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - ProductionIf the above worked, you should have no problem accessing the system using SQLDeveloper. You simply use the HOST, the PORT and the SID (alias) or service from the "lsnrctl status" output in the SQLDeveloper fields.
    If it did not work, try dropping the "@XE" to see whether you can get in (using the bequeath connection) which is useful for troubleshooting but will not help with the traditional SQLDeveloper connection. If you get in without the @XE (or whatever your alias is) but not with it, most likely either your listener is not up or your firewall is blocking the access to the listener.

  • SQL Developer Unable to see Chinese characters embedded in Package

    Dear sir,
    Please kindly help.
    I am running a DB with 'AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8'.
    My local NLS_LANG for the Oracle Home (regedit) are also set as 'AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8'.
    I am not quite sure what to set for the SQL Developer NLS_LAN (E.g. from Menu bar Tools > Preference, select Database > NLS_LANG item).
    Problem:
    In the SQL Developer, when I open the Package Browser and view my P/L Sql package content... the embedded Simplified Chinese are all scambled, and unreadable.
    Note: when I do select statement, I am able to see the chinese data fine.
    But not sure why the Packages are not able to be display correctly?!
    Please kindly assist.

    How can I fix it? I'm not sure.
    Does it has to do with my SQL Developer NLS_LANG?Problem/solution involves SQL Developer's "environment".
    Which company makes your SQL Developer? Which version is it?
    What is OS name & version?

  • SQL Developer extremely slow - suggestions?

    Hey,
    I've just installed - everything is extremely slow - 30 seconds or so to have the file menu open once clicking file for example. Also slows everything else on the computer to a crawl.
    machine has 1GB of RAM, Win XP Pro, etc. etc. and works great when SQL Developer is not open.
    i can connect to and browse the DB, i can execute queries, etc.
    If i alt+tab away from and then back to the SQL dev screen, it takes about 30 seconds for the screen to "refresh" from being blank and grey.
    This is so slow that i could never ever use it...any hints suggestions about settings, configs, other apps that it conflicts with, etc. that might help me get it working well?
    Sorry - running against Oracle 9i (9.2.0.5), but the slowness happens prior to connecting as well....

    Thanks very much!
    I've done that and the time to do anything has dropped from about 30 seconds down to 6 seconds.
    I can basically type out an entire sql select before it begins to appear on the screen.
    BUT it did load the app more quickly and it only takes about 4 - 6 seconds to refresh the screen when i alt+tab back to SQLd now.
    Still slows down everything else on the computer (though only badly instead of excuciatingly badly).
    Any other suggestions? other processes that are known to be conflicts?

    Welcome to the forum!
    Please read the FAQ for how to post a question and the information that you need to provide.
    The most important thing is that you actually need to post a question. Saying 'when I do this I have errors' is NOT a question. And it does not provide enough information for anyone to help you.
    The subject mentions Open JDK 7 but your content uses '/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk'. Nothing in what you posted says anything at all about whether you are using sql developer, what version you are using, or how you are trying to launch it.
    If you want help you have to provide detailed, specific information about each step you are taking and what results you get.
    Have you ever installed or used ANY version of sql developer on ANY platform?
    You are on a 64 bit system so are you using 64 bit versions of sql developer and the JDK?
    Are you aware that JDK 7 is NOT recommended for use with sql developer at this time?

  • How to make a file to be opened in PL-SQL Editor of SQL Developer

    How to open a package file (.pkg) in sql Developer's PL-SQL Editor?
    Tried creating a new file type with Extension as .pkg and file type as PlSqlNode.
    Could open the file and found some of the features of plsql editor, such as find, compile... but could not differentiate the font colors.
    How should we go about in having the file opened with different font colors (for identifier, builtin....?
    Thanks.
    K.Nataraja Suthan,

    I guess you're running into another known bug in this file-based battlefield.
    Opening files won't colour the code until having opened some code from the DB first. Can you try that?
    On a sidenote, I've had really bad experiences with external files (both compiling to DB and saving to file incorrectly, not showing errors, etc.). In the end the only safe thing to do is work directly on the DB, saving your progress now and then to file.
    Regards,
    K.

  • How to set default path for file open in SQL Developer

    Hi,
    I am new to Oracle SQL Developer. Everytime when I open a file, it will default to the install directory. It is hurtingmy hand because I have to click back to the folder where I put my sql statements.
    Is there any way to set the Home or Work button to point to the location I like? or add anther button to point to my folder? I just don't want to click 5 to 10 times to open a file.

    There are a few things. One is that you can set a working directory for any files you run in the SQL Worksheet i.e. @myfile.sql will pick up this directory.
    You can also set a preference for exporting files.
    Also if you use File -> Open, it should remember where you were the last time, so you hunt the first time, then it remembers for the next time. There is a bug for ctrl-O that always goes back to the original directory, but that has been fixed for the next patch release, so ctrl -O will also remember where you were last.
    The differences here are because we are dependent on the IDE from JDeveloper, and so we don't have full control over the Save and Open dialogs. We are aware of this frustration and are planning to change this for a future release.
    Regards
    Sue

  • Bug in Oracle SQL Developer

    I had Oracle SQL Developer 1.5.0.53 and when I did a "Check for Update" it said no updates found, even though SQL Developer 1.5.1 was released on June 9, 2008. So obviously this is a bug you need to fix.
    OK - So I downloaded the latest Oracle SQL Developer and installed it and when I opened it up, all my connections were gone!!!
    That's another bug you need to fix.

    See Does check for updates install 1.5.1 for some suggestions for Check for Update.
    For installing 1.5.1 and then losing your connections, did you install in a new directory or over the top of 1.5.0? If yes, then reinstall again into a new directory. If not, did migrate your settings from 1.5.0? Without doing that 1.5.1 won't find your existing connections.
