SQL Plus Installation

Trying to install the SQL Plus 10g. After completion, could not login. I un-installed (I thought) it through Vista control panel. Now want to re-install, ran the IOU. In the Selection Installation Method window, selected Basic, typed the password and confirmed, click next. On Product Specific Prerequisite Check window, click next
I'm getting a message, "The SID you have specified already exists on the machine, please specify a different SID."
How do I specify a different SID and complete the re-installation process? Thanks for helping. John

Edited by: 804479 on Oct 22, 2010 1:52 PMThere are so many things wrong with this I hardly know where to begin.
First, before we even get to the issue at hand .. when you you respond to someone's post by editing your original, it is next to impossible for people who come along later (like me, right now) to make any sense of where the discussion stands. Keep the conversation moving forward with new messages. Once a message is responded to, do not go back and edit it. Also, when responding to a message, it is best to quote a least the significant part to which you are responding. This also helps other to know exactly what your response is addressing.
Now, as far as your installation problem ... did you actually read the installation guide?
As pointed out, sqlplus is not a stand-alone installation. It is simply a command line interpreter (CLI) that is part of the oracle client bundle. you get it by installing either the client or the database (which installs the client as well).
Second, oracle 10 is not certified on Vista. And while you don't mention the version of Vista, it's worth pointing out that NO oracle product is certified on ANY home version of ANY Windows OS.
I don't understand how you could event think you un-installed it through Vista control panel. That's not how oracle installations work, and I don't think it would even show up there to attempt to uninstall it that way.
The error message you got concerning the sid indicates your first installation probably went OK, and you installed the db server software and created database.
So at that point you couldn't log on so decided to un-install and reinstall. That's like tearing down your house and rebuilding it just because you couldn't find the door key. If you had stopped right there and asked for help it would have been relatively easy to work through the problem. Now it's anyone's guess as to exactly what you have.
It is possible - quite easy actually, but not for the faint of heart - to rip oracle out by the roots on a windows system. It involves stopping any oracle related services, deleting a key from the registry, and deleting two directories from the disk. That would let you get a clean start and is sometimes necessary when dealing with a completely broken installation. But why don't we try to fix what we have before we go there.
You must tell us the following:
EXACTLY what version AND edition of Windows you are installing this on.
Exactly how you attempted to install. What file did you execute? What choices were you presented with and what choices did you make?
Do you have any oracle related services running - see the Services control panel. All oracle related services begin with "ora".
And remember, "doesn't work" is not a valid error code or message.

  • Oracle 9i Lite/Sql Plus Installation Instructions?

I am having the same problem with install Oracle 9i Lite. Really I need to get SQL PLUS up and running. I am installing it in Windows 98 and would like to use it on a stand alone pc/home pc.
I ended up just installing sql plus without net8 and other mobile server components because I don't know what the port name and hostname is. I am just trying to get sql plus to work.
After just installing sql plus, I get the same login username/password/host string. I think you can log in as SYSDBA or SYSOPER but what is the password and host string. I am not running sql plus from a server/internet I would like it to be stand alone. I know the host string has something to do with what type connection is being used but I don't have any (other than aol dial up connection) so I would just like to run sql on a stand alone pc!!! HELP!!

Did your SQL*Plus install include create a database to connect to? I think a quick thing to check would be:
Do you have a valid tnsnames.ora in $ORACLE_HOME\network\admin
(address = is on one line)
    ie:
    orcl =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = orcl.localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = orcl.localhost)
Where orcl is the name of the database you want to connect
to and local host is your machine. (Check Network configuration). If you are on a network you will replace with orcl.mynet.com
I think for a standalone SQL install they might expect you are on a NetWork and have a database to connect to. Maybe
you should download the whole install for standalone use...
9i and 8.1.7 are available for download. (8.1.7 is a little smaller and doesn't require as much memory depending on your home system)
I'm not even sure what you are trying to do. Please post more details if this doesn't help.

  • SQL*Plus Installation Problem (Ora-12705)

    Hi,
I bought a guide to sql featuring Oracle by phillip J.Pratt published by course Technology include Oracale8i Personal Edition realease 8.1.5 for Microsoft Window 98 and Oracle Developer 6.0. I follow the documentation to install. I think i got right configuration (i have the tnslsnr window display and Oracle8i database started) but when I login (user:system and password:manager)it doen't work and it give me the error Ora-12705: invalid or unknow NLS parameter value specified. What can i do with this? I appreciate for yours help.

I got this error message too when I install the 9i client in my pc. You can find the NLS_LANG in the registry under \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE. If you have multiple oracle home, you might need to check each of the entry.
I found that the value for NLS_LANG is NA and I changed it to
    9i: AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252
    oracle form 6i : AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1
This fixed my sqlplus problem, and I hope it helps.

  • Downloading and installing Oracle (with sql plus) on Windows 7 Professional

    Hi,
I got a new laptop which has Windows 7 Professional (64 bit). I intend to download Oracle 10g and would like to install bothe the database and the sql plus in this system.
I would appreciate if somebody could provide me a link to the appropriate database (with sql plus installation capability). Also if available the installation guide.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
Windows 7 Professional (64 bit). I intend to download Oracle 10g and would like to install bothe the database and the sql plusOracle *10g* is not certified on Windows *7*, except with the latest patchset *10.2.0.5*, and its Premium Support ended on the *31st of July 2010*.
You should download Oracle *11.2* which is certified on Windows *7 - 64 bit*.
You'll find the Documentation and Download tabs on the link below:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/overview/index.html
About SQLPlus, it's delivered with Oracle Server and, in *11g*, you can still use it from a DOS box. If you intend to have a Graphical Tool, you should use Oracle SQL Developer instead:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/overview/index.html
    Hope this help.

  • Installation 9i lite / try to open SQL plus in Win XP

    Good day,
I install Oracle 9i lite on my pers computer and want to open SQL Plus but ask me for a User Name, Password and Host String.
I tried them all, system/manager, scott/tiger, name it. Is there any doc in plain english or french on installation, configuration so I can use SQL Plus on my pers computer with win XP.
    Thanks
    Martin

9i LITE (so far as I know) does not support SQL*PLUS. If you need SQL*PLUS install Personal Oracle instead.
9i LITE is a light-weight database and supports ODBC, JDBC, and a command line interface "msql". SQL*PLUS is not included. Open a DOS window and enter
    msql system/manager@POLite
this works IF you installed the development SDK stuff (see your ODBC DSNs and look for a new DSN called POLite).
If you don't have the DSN POLite, then you don't yet have a database created for msql to access. See the manuals on how to create the database in Oracle Lite.

  • Installation of 11.1.0.5.10 Beta Blows Away SQL PLUS In Other Home

I had a working 10g R2 client installed and working. Installed 11.1.0.5.10 Beta into a new home. Attempted to run install scripts and determined that SQLPLUS no longer works in the 10g R2 client home. Any ideas? Should I have installed 11.1.0..5.10 beta into the exsiting home?
    Tom

You may copy the sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora two files from your working 10gR2 home (under 10gR2 home's Network\Admin directory) to 11.1.0.5.10 Beta home (under 11.1.0.5.10 Beta home's Network\Admin directory).
    Two possibilities:
    1. use <10gR2 full path>\sqlplus.exe to run the ASP.NET scripts.
    2. if you have ODT installation, you may use it's "Query Window"or "Run SQL*Plus Script" (under Tools menu) to run the ASP.NET scripts

Creating database step 1 of 5 starts and then:
a 'report error to microsoft' window is opened, saying
Oracle SQL*Plus has encountered a problem an needs to close ....blah, blah..
After closing this window Install Shield reports successful installation and when I try to launch the installed application (pressing Finish button),
it does not work (I did expect this after sqlPlus failure)...

There several logs in the oracleXE directory tree, can you advise me which could be of any relevance? (css.log, ....\database\sqlnet.log, ....\network\sql.log, listener.log, oradim.log, XE.bat.log)
I also discovered, that the installation works on another similar machine (I had to start a service manually after processor usage jumped to 100%), but on that machine an oracle client was installed previously.
On the machine where installation is causing problems, no oracle product has been installed previously !

in oracle9i all default users account are lock by default. so if you want to connect

sqlplus will open with no connection then issue the command.
    conn / as sysdba
    alter user scott account unlock;
    conn scott/tiger

    (SERVICE_NAME = XE)
    any ideas?

The TNS-12154 (ORA-12154) error appears when SQL*Net cannot find the alias specified for a connection in the TNSNAMES.ORA file or other naming adapter.
Since we can clearly see the XE entry in your TNSNAMES.ORA file from your further post, the message implies that you are not using the TNSNAMES.ORA that contains the entry, or something is changing the lookup so the entry is not found.
Using a different TNSNAMES.ORA can occur under the following situations:
    1) You have a TNS_ADMIN environment variable or registry entry that points somewhere other than this TNSNAMES.ORA
    2) You are on Windows NT and are using a SQLPLus that is in a different ORACLE_HOME. The WIndows environment forces the use of the networking subsystem in the ORACLE_HOME as the client program (such as SQLPLUS), which defaults to the TNSNAMES.ORA in the home as the client.
    Things I would check:
    - is there another TNSNAMES.ORA anywhere on the system
    - is there a system environment variable called TNS_ADMIN, or is that string found in the registry
    - is there possibly a second SQLPlus.exe (even on a networked drive) that migt be called before the XE - supplied SQLPLUS
It is also possible to have a SQLNET.ORA impacting the way TNSNAMES.ORA is used. If all else checks out, we should look at the %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin\sqlnet.ora in detail as well.
By the way, the Oracle Network Administration docco has two whole chapters devoted to troubleshooting networking issues, from initial config through data errors in the various config files. If you want to track it faster, check out http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/network.102/b14212/troublestng.htm

  • Oracle10g Developer Suite - Application Development - SQL Plus Login Info

I have installed Oracle10g Developer Suite and when I am trying to login into the sql*plus environment the username scott with the passcode tiger is not working. I have Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.1.0 as the database.
Can anyone help me in setting up the username and password to login into Sql*plus Release 10.1.0.4.2

It sounds like you may be new to Oracle and its products. I would recommend doing some reading.
Oracle 9.2 Net Services Admin Guide
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/network.920/a96580/toc.htm
    Oracle Developer Suite Installation Guide
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25016_06/doc/dl/core/B16012_03/toc.htm
You create the "login" information when you install the database. If you are not the person who performed the installation, you will need to contact them or install it again. Also, be aware that the SCOTT schema is disabled by default in newer database versions for security reasons.
The tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora files can be found in the ORACLE_HOME\network\admin directory. This is the same for all Oracle products that use Sql-Net for database connections. You can also use the TNS_ADMIN environment variable to point to a pre-existing tnsnames.ora file (see previously mentioned documents).
The tnsnames.ora entry will be unique to your database and its listener however here is an example:
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = someServer.com)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
    )

  • Problem running SQL PLUS in Oracle 8i and 9i on Windows XP

I've tried installing both Oracle 8.17 Personal Edition and also 9i in Windows XP Professional (each on a different occassion). I have run into the same problem each time. The installation itself goes fine in both cases, but when I run SQL PLUS, the Log On screen appears for 1-2 seconds then whole thing just closes automatically, so I can't ever access that application which is the only thing I need to work with. Any ideas on what's going wrong? Thanks.

    Patrick,
Well a few things. Did you try TNSPING to see if the listener is up? If it's ok, can you connect with FREE toad? Download Oracle OEM and install that (the SQL net and sql plus portions). If you can't get tnsping to work, sqlplus isn't going too either. I don't know why the sqplus is actually shutting down, but I'm guessing the TNS NAMES entry isnt there (in the tnsnames.ora file). If the tnsnames entry is there then tnsping should work. Get tnsping to work first.
    Tyler.

  • Need help in sql plus

i install in my computer the oracle9i
my problem is that : i can login to sql plus
althoge i was tring all the passwords that i know
    scott/tiger
    sys/change_on_install
system/manager and the result is allways the same
    ora-12560 error
how can i solve that problem?
did i missed somthing during the installation?

    Thank you to EVERYONE!!
I have been searching every possible forum to find out how to install/run SQL *Plus on a home computer without a server/network to work within.  As most just learning, I could not figure out how to get past the SQL Plus Username/Password/Host String logon.
After much trial and error, I got through and I hope this helps a lot of people just starting out.
I used 'SYSTEM' as my username and my password created on install.
When installing I created a database and fixed the password so my default password was the password I created on install.
As long as I had those two fields filled in, I could leave the Host String blank and I could still get into the SQL Plus workspace.
Since I also created a database on install, I found that I could also use the name I gave the installed database (I didn't leave the default database name so I do not remember what the default name was, but I think the default password was 'manager' for those who were not tempted to change it).
Worst case scenario if you forgot your database name given during install, you can do a search for all of your .ora files (usually in the drive you installed Oracle on). Open the tnsnames.ora file in Notepad and you can see which database names are available on your system. The path to my file was:
    D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
You want the SERVICE_NAME = 'databasename'
I hope this reduced someone's stress...and thanks for all the helpful hints on these threads...they led me to the final outcome!!
In the end, I tried a lot of other combinations for the username/host strings with plenty of errors. You would think this information would be on page one of every Oracle install!! Or maybe it is and I am just a bit slow. : )
Thanks again to all that posted with this initial question (years ago)...

    I have tried,
Run selecthome.bat from BIN but got same error,
Run sqlpus.exe from particular home then also got same error..
So , Please anyone can have some idea regarding the same ?

Is there any other error in error.log file?
What do you run in that (ms_script) script?
    Have you used both sqlplus?
