Sql server 2008 service accounts.

For Sql server agent and Sql Server Database engine a dedicated low privileged
separate accounts are assigned while installing  Sql  Server 2008 R2.But when
I am specifying Sql Server feature installation in the setup role and in feature
selection I am selecting all ,what should be the nature of accounts that I should
provide for Sql Server Analysis Service and Sql Server Reporting Services?
If I install Sqlserver 2008R2 in my local machine running under windows-7
and use a local standard user account to run my DB engine, would I be
able to access the databases in Sql Server 2008 installed in a remote
server in the same domain?

I agree with Erland.
SQL Service account is used while performing any OS level operation by SQL Server process (sqlservr.exe). On the other hand, the account which is connecting to SQL Server will have it's own permission in Server/Database provided via Logins/Users.

  • Change SQL Server Agent service account

How can I change the SQL Server Agent service account from NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT to a domain user? and most importantly is what permissions I have to give that domain user?
I know that when SQL Server setup, the installer gives the domain user (that we choose to run a SQL Server service) the least privileges required, but my case is that I chose NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT and
now I want to change it to domain user so I can run successfully jobs that execute something on another SQL Servers.
If I JUST change the service account in the SQL Server Agent Properties window to a normal domain user, this is not enough and non of the jobs (even that execute local jobs) will work ...
So what privileges I should give that domain user to be able to run ALL jobs successfully?

Thanks Andreas ... yes it seems that my problem is not what I was thinking.
Stan210, thank you also :) .... my connection is trusted and the following is the error I'm getting:
The job failed.  Unable to determine if the owner (MYDOMAIN\JobOwnerUser) of job
MyJOB has server access (reason: Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'MYDOMAIN\JobOwnerUser', error code 0x6e. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error
    15404)).
if I change the owner of the job to sa I get the follwoing error:
Executed as user: CCCAE\RASO_SSAgent. Login failed for user 'MYDOMAIN\AgentDomainUser'. [SQLSTATE 28000] (Error 18456)  Cannot open database "DB_on_other_Server" requested by the login. The login
failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 4060).  The step failed.
if I keep the owner of the job "sa" and add the 'MYDOMAIN\JobOwnerUser'
in 'Run as user' of the step, I get the following error:
'EXECUTE AS USER' failed for the requested user
'MYDOMAIN\JobOwnerUser' in the database 'master'.  The step failed.
    please note that 'MYDOMAIN\JobOwnerUser'
is a sysadmin on both SQL Servers

  • SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 installation problem

    I am using Windows 7.
Today I saw "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (KB968369)" as an optional update in the updates list. I've tried to intstall it but it failed with Code CF2E222F. I found nothing about this code on the internet.
I've also tried to install the sp manually. I've downloaded it an tried to install. But it also failed.
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: C:\Windows\Installer\9bcac.msi.
    Any suggestions?

  • SQL Server 2008 Service SIDs

    Hello,
I've recently installed SQL Server 2008 and when I look at the groups created, the Windows Domain accounts I specified for each service do not appear. Instead the service SID has been placed into that group, however when I run cmd>>sc showsid [servicename]
    the SIDs do not match.
How can I confirm the SID of the SQL services?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Vijay, thank you for your response,
The server build is Windows 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2008 installed.
I can see that in the groups (under computer management) created by SQL Server the service for the database engine is NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER with a SID. What I am trying to work out is, compared to SQL Server 2005, where the account for the service was dropped
into the corresponding group,  a service SID is now in the group.
However when I use the cmd>>sc showsid [MSSQLSERVER] the SID displayed does not match the SID assigned to the NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER account in the group.
I'm pretty sure I am missing something, I would just like to understand how the correct permissions are assigned to the SQL Server services,
    Regards,
    Andrew

  • SQL server 2008 Service pack install with mirroring

Just looking for some official documentation about installing service pack 3 when I have a mirrored set up in high-safety mode with automatic failover.
    I have found this,
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb677181%28v=sql.100%29.aspx would the same apply to the service packs as well?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Below is official doc applies from SS2005 to SS2012. Please follow this not what you have pasted

  • DPM 2010 installation failure (SQL-server Reporting Services Problem)

    Hi everyone,
The last 2 days I have been trying to get DPM 2010 installed on a DC. I know this is not recommended, but for our company with the current setup it's the only way to do it.
I have been reading some Microsoft articles (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399416.aspx) about doing this but I fail to do so.
I have made all of the right service accounts (I guess) and am doing everything in the guide but still get the same error message over and over again:
Setup has detected that the installation of Reporting Services is not correctly configured or no instance of Reporting Services is linked to DPM2010 of SQL Server
I just can't get my head around it. This is the error message when I try to install DPM 2010 using an existing SQL-database which I have configured in the SQL 2008-server sp1 installation.
I have enclosed some screenshots so you could maybe check some things that are not correct? Hopefully we can get this issue resolved, because it's driving me crazy to be honest!
Physical server which is ADC and where I need to install SQL-server and DPM: VMBACKUP
The service account for DPM is: DPMSQLSvcsAcct
Also have another service account: DPMR$VMBACKUP
I have also enclosed the error log located in C:\DPMLogs\

  • I am not able to install sql server 2008 r2 sp2

    hi,
I have installed sql server 2008 r2 rtm and want to update to sp2 and have installed sp2 from microsoft website and then i installed CU1 for sp2. All installation  did successfully but still it is not showing the updated version info.I am checking the
version info from Help>About. Please tell me what to do next?
    Thanks and regards.

    Hello,
Please run the discovery report. Maybe you have more than one instance of SQL Server installed on that computer and you updated just one of them. Make sure you click to select all the instances shown on the “Select Features” page of SQL Server setup.

  • Upgrating SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 to SQL Server 2014 Standard "UpgradeFeatureSpecificRules: KJRTMUpgradeBlockRule"

I've been searching for HOURS how to resolve this issue:
I am trying to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 (Express Edition with advanced services) to SQL SERVER 2014 Standard edition, my first issue was to update the 2008 R2 to Service pack 2 on the first FEATURE RULE TEST, at this time on it's keep saying this:
    ======================================================================================
    Rule Check Result
Rule "SQL Server 2008 R2 Service pack 2 or later is requered for upgrade.: failed.
This SQL Server 2008 R2 features that have been selected to be upgraded to SQL Server 2014 are not at the require service pack. To continue with this upgrade, install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 or lager to the selected instance and the shared features.
    =====================================================================================
This is the Configuration Report issue:
Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - System Configuration Check Report
UpgradeFeatureSpecificRules: SQL Server 2014 Setup configuration checks for rules group 'UpgradeFeatureSpecificRules'
        KJRTMUpgradeBlockRule
Checks if the currently selected SQL Server 2008 R2 features to upgrade are at the supported service pack.     Failed     The SQL Server 2008 R2 features that have been selected to be upgraded to SQL Server 2014 are not at the
required service pack. To continue with this upgrade, install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 or later to the selected instance and the shared features.
    ====================================================================================
I try after hours and finally did install the Upgrade Advisor and got not issues, the last choice I was to uninstall the Management Studio because in other upgrade express versions got blocked, but in this new version of SQL Server 2014 I don't see any way
    out!!!
    Thanks.

    Hi again
    This is the scenario:
-I have installed the SQL SERVER 2008 R2 With Advanced services (version 10.50.1600.1), and now my guest decide to upgrade to an STARNDARD version which nowadays Microsoft is offering the 2014 version.
-As all IT Support and DBA I try to upgrade to SQL 2014 to check and see with requirements were missing or updates. The first check report only ask to upgrade to SQL SERVER 2008 R2 SP2 (version 10.51.2500.0) which I found in the optional update list and
resolved immediately with the Windows Update service.
-Finally, I realise doing the discovery report (suggested in the last post) is that Windows update only download the service pack 2 for SQL Server 2008 instead of the 2008 R2 (I downloaded manually) then the version was upgrade to 10.52.4000.0
Next time I might download the updates manually and not loosing a lot hours with Windows Update, another point very important is that when SQL Server 2008 R2 is installed, create the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 folder at all programas in the Startup menu:
with the SQL Server Installation Center, but there is not one R2, when you execute this one just show the 2008 installed features.
    Now we are on 12.0.2000.8
Thanks anyway and all of you for your interest!!!

  • SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 Configuration file path: is empty

I have begun installing SQL 2012 Service Pack 2 on a test system and I go to the page where it is Ready to update.  The configuration file path: at the bottom of the screen was empty.  Is this normal or will I need to go to the default locations
of Bootstrap to find the configuration file this upgrade is going to use?  This is something that is odd as a majority of our current installations is automated using a configuration file and a path for the Upgrade files.
    Rick

    Hi Rick,
Based on your description, I make a test on my computer. When I go to the ‘Ready to update’ page, I also find that the ‘configuration file path’ box is empty, below is my screenshot. This is a normal phenomenon during the installation of SQL Server Service
    Pack.
We don’t need to find the configuration file from SQL Server setup location, just click the Update button to perform the Service Pack installation. After the update process, I install SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 successfully.
Besides, there is also a similar article about installing SQL Server Service Pack for your reference.

  • Install SQL server 2008 in win8.1 (error : compatibility issues)

    Hi it's Omka,
I've been trying to install sql 2008 express on my win8.1 for almost a week now. When installing the program it has a pop up window with "compatibility issue", but I just ignore that continued the installation, then this appeared
    TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created..
    BUTTONS:
    OK
After that I've tried changing the compatibility mode to windows xp(SP3), but it's not working, "restart computer" in setup support  is having error.
Do I need to install other version of SQL or change any settings ?
    Please help :)

    Hello,
Please try to perform an slipstream installation of SQL Server 2008 + Service Pack 4 to solve the error and the compatibility
    issues.

  • MS14-044 for SQL Server 2008 Standard on Windows Server 2003?

MS14-044 was recently released and states that it applied to MS SQL Server 2008 SP3, yet the patches available for this security bulletin do not list Windows Server 2003 in the supported operating systems. Does MS14-044 not apply to SQL Server running
on Windows Server 2003? If it does apply, why isn't there an update available to run on Windows Server 2003?

    Hi Chasg76,
According to your description, the patches available for MS14-044 do not list Windows Server 2003 in the supported operating systems and you want to know whether MS14-044 applies to SQL Server running on Windows Server
    2003.
Based on my test, KB2977321 applies to SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 product and it does apply to SQL Server 2008 SP3 running on Windows Server 2003.
I installed SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 in Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86. After the service pack 3 installation completed, KB2977321 was offered in the Automatic Update.
Besides, you can manually install the update by downloading the update form the Download Center web site as well.
I also tried the manually installation and I downloaded the Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321) from this web: Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321) (https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS14-044),
    it was installed successfully.
After installed security upgrade, I checked the file attributes and compared to this article: MS14-044: Description of the security update for SQL Server 2008 SP3 (GDR): August 12, 2014(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2977321/en-us).
    The result is the same.
According to my test, MS14-044 applies to SQL Server running on Windows Server 2003 even though Windows Server 2003 is not listed in the supported operating systems.
    Best regards,
    Qiuyun Yu

  • Service Account for SQL Server Agent on SQL Server 2008 R2

This SQL Server instance is SQL Server 2008 R2 (10.50.4000).  We had Active Domain Service accounts created to run the service accounts for SQL Server and SQL Server Agent.
It has become company policy to alter the service accounts that run SQL Server and SQL Server Agent.  Currently, both were running under the Local System Accounts.  We have altered the SQL Server but we are having issues with the SQL Server Agent.
I am told by another DBA that
"The agent is requiring elevated rights.  It will startup if it has local admin rights, but not with domain accounts without admin rights."
So I was wondering if anyone has come across this issue and how did they resolve it.
    lcerni

"The agent is requiring elevated rights.  It will startup if it has local admin rights, but not with domain accounts without admin rights."
This is completely not true. It is indeed possible to run agent as a domain account without giving it local admin. Chances are you'll need to update the local acls by adding the account to the local security groups. Please see this article for more information:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504(v=sql.105).aspx
Edit: In addition, it'll need rights to SQL server for that account to connect and do its work. It will need to be given sysadmin:
