SQL Server 2014 - calling sp_setapprole failing

The corporation I work at has decided to start using the application role functionality in SQL Server.    We are able to successfully implement the app roles into the application (PowerBuilder 12.1) when running against a SQL Server 2012 database,
however the same code when running against a SQL Server 2014 database fails.
Because PB execute everything from within a transaction we had to do some "interesting" code to get the approles working.  Here is the SQL that is being passed into the DB:
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF
SET IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS OFF
SET ANSI_PADDING ON
create table "<generated temp table name>" (id int identity( 1, 1) not null, cookie varbinary(8000) not null )
declare @cookie1 varbinary( 8000)  exec sp_setapprole @rolename = '"+ <rolename>+"', @password = '"+<password>+"',  @fCreateCookie = 1, @cookie = @cookie1 output insert "+<generated temp
table name>+"( cookie) values( @cookie1)
So what happens is the approle is being called and the cookie stored in a temp table on the database.  This is because of the translation between SQL Server and PB with the Varbinary cookie that is created for the approle.  If brought into PB it gets
messed up and the unset approle doesn't work.
As stated, the code above WORKS in SQL Server 2012, not in 2014.  I run the profile trace on the server and I can see the temp table being created, the sp_setapprole proc being called and the statements inside being executed, but once hitting the function
setuser we get the error that the approle does no exist or the password is invalid.  I've been able to trace through the password being sent in and it's the same as that PB is sending across so it's not a corruption issues.
Running the SQL through SS Management Studio works.  The temp table created and the approle is set.  Additionally we have .Net applications using the same user/password, and retrieving a cookie, and they work as well.
Does anyone know if there has been changes to the way approles are handled in 2014, or if there was a change to the setuser functionality that could be causing the approle to fail?

The call "SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF" was an attempt to get the DB working the same way our SQL Server 2012 database is set-up.  I've since removed it
from the code. Also each of the calls are executed separately:
ls_sql = "SET IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS OFF"
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE :ls_sql USING atrTrans;
IF atrTrans.SqlCode <> 0 THEN
guMsg_handler.uf_message(TRUE, &
"Unable to connect to the database.~r~n" + &
atrTrans.sqlerrtext)
RETURN false
END IF
ls_sql =  "SET ANSI_PADDING ON"
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE :ls_sql  USING atrTrans ;
IF atrTrans.SqlCode <> 0 THEN
guMsg_handler.uf_message(TRUE, &
"Unable to connect to the database.~r~n" + &
atrTrans.sqlerrtext)
RETURN false
END IF
ls_sql =  "create table  "+atrTrans.isTempTableName+"( id int identity( 1, 1) not null, cookie varbinary(8000) not null ) "
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE :ls_sql  USING atrTrans ;
IF atrTrans.SqlCode <> 0 THEN
guMsg_handler.uf_message(TRUE, &
"Unable to connect to the database.~r~n" + &
atrTrans.sqlerrtext)
RETURN false
END IF
ls_sql = "declare @cookie1 varbinary( 8000), @password1 sysname = '" + ls_appRollPass + "'  exec sp_setapprole @rolename = '"+ ls_AppRoleName +"', @password = @password1,  @fCreateCookie
= 1, @cookie = @cookie1 output insert "+atrTrans.isTempTableName+"( cookie) values( @cookie1) "
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE :ls_sql  USING atrTrans ;
IF atrTrans.SqlCode <> 0 THEN
guMsg_handler.uf_message(TRUE, &
"Unable to connect to the database.~r~n" + &
atrTrans.sqlerrtext)
RETURN false
END IF
atrTrans.AutoCommit = FALSE
ls_sql = "SET IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS ON"
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE :ls_sql  USING atrTrans ;
ls_sql = "SET ANSI_PADDING OFF"
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE :ls_sql  USING atrTrans ;
commit using atrTrans ;
  EDIT: Note that the passing of the password as a variable was only for testing/validation to ensure that the password matched what was being sent from PB and NOT intended to be there in the actual implementation.

    Please can you assist me on this issue.

    The error message states a communication link failure has occurred.
    This is most likely a network related error and usually is transient.
    Try to generate the snapshot again and see if the error still occurs.  If the error still occurs, you will need to have a network admin check the links.

  • Attunity SSIS connector support for Sql Server 2014?

    Hello,
    We've been successfully using Attunity SSIS connector 2.0 for a couple of years with SQL SERVER 2012.
    We developed some Visual Studio projects and deployed them on our SSISDB. Then launch them with scheduled jobs. Everything worked fine.
    After we upgraded the server to Sql Server 2014 the connector failed with the following error:
    The connection type "MSORA" specified for connection manager "XXX" is not recognized as a valid connection manager type.
    This error is returned when an attempt is made to create a connection manager for an unknown connection type. Check the spelling in the connection type name.
    We tried uninstall/install but was no good. Also 32/64 bits combinations.
    We tried DTEXEC utility and worked fine on sqlserver 2012 folder ( \110\DTS\Binn) but didn't work on 2014's folder ( \120\DTS\Binn).
    We also tried a fresh 2014 installation but keep getting the same error.
    Does Attunity connector 2.0 support Sql Server 2014? If not, should I wait for a new version? Any workaround?
    For now, we are using the DTEXEC utility on 2012's folder, but since we have to use the /sql option (/ISSERVER is not working) we can't pass parameters to the .dtsx package.
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Daniel

    I'm with Daniel - Microsoft should be taking the lead in resolving this. We downloaded the previous two versions from Microsoft Download (e.g. link below) with no indication that Microsoft would wash their hands of future support.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29283
    Attunity have replied on the thread on their forum - saying it is Microsoft's responsibility:
    http://www.attunity.com/forums/microsoft-ssis-oracle-connector/attunity-ssis-connector-support-sql-server-2963.html
    Trying to run, develop and support on parallel versions of SSIS is not a viable solution IMO.
    I will advise all my clients who use these connectors not to upgrade to SQL Server 2014 until this is resolved.

  • SQL Server 2014 Always on HA takes 8-14 seconds to fail over. Application side timeouts occur

    Hi All,
    I have a very similar post in the SQL Server 2014 forums too (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/adb5e338-907e-4405-aa62-d3ea93c7a98a/sql-server-2014-always-on-ha-takes-814-seconds-to-fail-over-application-side-timeouts-occur?forum=sqldisasterrecovery) -
    advice in the end was to post a question here.
    SQL Server Nodes, 2014 (12.0.2480.0)
    1 Share witness (on separate subnet)
    1 Cluster
    1 Listener
    I have been testing the response time to failovers – both manual (right-click, fail over in SSMS) and Automatic (shut down the primary host). The way I am testing response is to have a SSMS query running on my desktop, connected to the listener querying
    a small table and hit execute.
    The Query response time, from execute to receiving the result, has been between 8 and 14 seconds based on my testing. My previous experience (in a separate environment) showed around 2 second fail over times in a very similar configuration.
    Availability DB is 200Mb and is not actively used. The nodes are synchronised.
    SQL Server Hosts: Windows 2012, 2 cpu, 8gb RAM.
    Questions:
    1: It’s a big question but what should I expect for a ‘normal’ fail over time. Keep in mind this scenario is about as simple as it gets.
    2: As it stands an 8 to 14 second ‘outage’ could cause some applications to time out. Or am I being un-reasonable? I am seeing the very simple query in SSMS to time out with this:
    Msg 983, Level 14, State 1, Line 2
    Unable to access availability database 'DATABASE' because the database replica is not in the PRIMARY or SECONDARY role. Connections to
    an availability database is permitted only when the database replica is in the PRIMARY or SECONDARY role. Try the operation again later.
    Cluster logs are long - this section accounts for 8 seconds of the 11 second outage I experienced. I can supply the full log if required. Also this log is just the 2 cluster nodes, I removed the witness share to make sure it was as simple as possible.

    Hi Keegan,
    From these event log , what I can see is "Sending request Netname" wasted the time .
    Could you please tell us the network configuration of that cluster nodes ?
    If I recall correctly , it is recommended to only remain Tcp/IP protocol and disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP for "Private Network" , also do not configure DNS/Wins default gateway for "Private Network" :
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/258750?wa=wsignin1.0
    After that please test again .
    Best Regards,

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Setup error: Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed

    Hi,
    Having this annoying error trying to install SQL Server 2014 (RTM). I saw it's been asked several times... But each post seems a different cause and no definitive answer...
    I'm not doing an upgrade, so no "sa account" issue.
    Tried different media. Even three different distributions: trial, Standard and Enterprise.
    Tried disabling Microsoft antivirus/firewall.
    Of course tried restarting, updating, installing, uninstalling, repairing, etc., etc.
    I noticed the users folders under C:\Users weren't created. (Maybe something related to permissions?) After playing around, I managed for the users to be created and the service started. Though I couldn't log in.

  • SSIS packages are failing after upgrade to SQL server 2014

    Hi,
    I have some SSIS packages running on SQL server 2012 .
    After I upgraded to SQL server to 2014 from 2012 , the SSIS jobs are failing on the SQL agent.
    And i can see its related to Data source connectivity to the SQL agent. I hope it not able to identify the connection manager in SQL agent. And connection adapter is not upgraded.
    I read some articles about this and they say it not able to connect to SQL server agent job.
    And, I can see that the package is running if i run manually using SQL 2012 run time.
    Why its not running on SQL 2014 ?
    did i  miss anything while upgrading SQL server 2014 ?
    Please give me some suggestions to solve this issue.
    And is there any way i can change the SQL server agent 2014 to adapt this and run ?
    Below is the error :
    The Package filed to load due to error 0XC00100014 " One or more error occurres. There should be more specific errors preceding this one that expalins the details of the erroes. This message is used as a return value from functions that encounter
    errors.: This occures when CPackage::LoadFormXML fails.
    Regards,
    Vinodh Selvaraj.

    I think you have typed this error message by yourself.
    Anyway, as it says there should be more error preceeding to this. Do you have any other errors which describles the exact issue stating at what task it fails?
    If not, then there are various reasons behind this issue. 3rd party connection manager such as Oracle Attunity or it may be 32/64 bit issue.
    You may try executing package in 32 bit mode from SQL Agent Job.

  • SQL SERVER 2014 - Project consistency check failed. The following inconsistencies were detected: package.dtsx. has a different ProtectionLevel than the project.

    I am getting the following error when I right click on a package in solution explorer and execute using SQL Server 2014:
    Project consistency check failed. The following inconsistencies were detected: package.dtsx. has a different ProtectionLevel than the project.
    Luckily my solution only has 10 packages.  I have verified and re-verified that everyone is set to dontsavesensitive.
    I have verified and re-verified that the solution has the protection level to dontsavesensitive.
    What on earth is going on here?  I am using windows authentication and have no need for the package to save any sensitive information, nor should there be any.
    Can someone please help me out here?
    The Degenerate Dimension

    Hi MMiligan,
    Just as the error message said, the exactly issue is that the package package.dtsx has a different ProtectionLevel property value than the project.
    So please double check the value of project ProtectionLevel property, like DontSaveSensitive, then make sure all packages in the project use the same ProtectionLevel value.
    If there is still an error message indicated that some packages use a different value, please right-click the indicated package to select View Code, then make sure there is a line like below(the DontSaveSensitive
    protection level corresponds to the value of 0):
    DTS:ProtectionLevel="0"

  • SQL Server 2014 installation using command line fails to remove the extraction folder when complete

    We need to install SQL Server 2014 Express in /QS mode (shows
    progress through the UI, but does not accept any input or show any error messages) as
    my setup-Prerequisite. I passed my installation parameters to
    SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe, when I ran my application it pop-ups
    user to select the folder to extract files. After I choose the folder, SQL
    files got extracted and the installation proceeded and it got succeed.
    But it fails to remove the extraction folder when installation is complete.

    There is an issue that /qs parameter is not recognized and cannot be used the same
    way as in SQL 2012. That issue will be addressed in SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1.

  • SQL Server 2014 can only backup once after restart. Subsequent backups fail

    Obvious response...install SP1

    Here is an odd one. I have SQL Server 2014 (not sp1) running in a cluster. Everything seems to be working fine. No performance issues or no crashes/error log issues.However, I can only backup a DB once after I restart (not reboot OS) SQL Server. If I try to backup the db a second time it fails, does not matter if I wait minutes, hours or days. I have tried switching backup locations and even have tried backing up to our Azure account. They all work the first time and fail on the subsequent attempts.Both machines are fully updated Windows Server 2012 R2. The only update available is SP1 for SQL Server. The failover is a Hyper V, while the active node is a physical server.Below is the error I get, which does not give me much detail. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. It is a pain to have to restart each night and manually backup the...

  • Overlapped I/O error 997 installing SQL Server 2014 Express on Windows Server 2012 R2

    I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2014 Express on a Windows Server 2012 R2 system. When I do the install, it fails (several times) with an "Error: 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.". From searching the web, I can see many people
    have had this problem with this installer and other non-SQL server installers.
    I've tried every solution I can find discussed, but none help with my problems The system is fully updated, with the exception of the KB2538243 (VC 2008 SP1 redist), which is probably failing for the same reason.
    I've tried removing several updates mentioned in other articles (KB2918614). I've confirmed that I'm not using a temporary profile.
    Does anyone have an idea of how I can solve this issue?
    Thanks,
    Zack

  • Installing SQL Server 2014 Express package as ClickOnce prerequisite

    I'm using clickOnce and deploying an installer with it.
    I have tried various settings. Using SQL Server 2008 Express and SQL Server 2012 Express as prerequisite is all ok (I've dowloaded them and set the option of clickonce "download prerequisites from the same path of app").
    Now I'm trying to do the same thing with SQL Server 2014 Express.
    Since the SQL Server 2014 Express package isn't alredy done line 2008 and 2012 versiones, I'm trying to create it.
    I have done and it seems to work, but while installing it gives error number **-2054422506**. It is a very generic error and I don't understand it.
    It appears a pop up saying the installation is stopped because it is an error installing SQL Server Express 2014 and to look the log for more infos.
    The log only says:
        Installing using command
        'C:\Users\VIRTUA~1\AppData\Local\Temp\VSD24F4.tmp\SqlExpress2014\
        SQLEXPR32_x86_ITA.EXE' and parameters '/q /action=Install /features=SQL
        /instancename=SQLEXPRESS /securitymode=SQL /sapwd=234692Is
        /sqlsvcaccount="NT Authority\Network Service'
        Process exited with code -2054422506
        Status of package 'SQL Server 2014 Express' after install is 'InstallFailed'
    So, I've tried to install SQL Server 2014 Express manually, without ClickOnce, and it works. So I think I've made some mess in the xml file of the package.
    My package is so build (in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v8.1A\Bootstrapper\Packages\):
        \SqlExpress2014
             \it
                 SQLEXPR32_x86_ITA.exe
                 SQLEXPR_x64_ITA.exe
                 eula.rtf
                 package.xml
             product.xml
             SqlExpressChk.exe
    This is my package.xml file:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <Package

    I've copied the SqlExpressChk.exe file from the SQL Server 2012 Express package, hoping it is the same (2008 and 2012 versions seems the same, so I supposed it also for the 2014).
    I've delete the part in package.xml about the publicKey, since I don't know it and, further, I think I don't need it.
    In the same file, I've inserted custom parameters, first like in the 2008 and 2012 versions, then doing some attempts (without success).
    Did anyone have this problem? How did you have manage it?
    **NOTE**: I'm using my clickOnce deploy in an empty virtual machine, so there aren't any conflicts o something similar.
    More attempts, more failures, always the same error! I'm deleting the optional stuff to study better the core of the xml, but still no success.. does microsoft have a package of sql server 2014 express?

    thanks! =)
    SqlServer usually runs a file (SqlExpressChk.exe) to see if there is already an installation and a sql instance called sqlExpress (for the express installations). Do you know how can do this test with the bootstrapper manifest generator?
    I am not able to test it currently, but I assume that will also check whether that has installed.
    You have tested it, right?

  • MS SQL Server 2014: Error inserting into Temp table with index and identity field

    In this thread, I mentioned a problem with SQL Server 2014:
    SQL Server 2014: Bug with IDENTITY INSERT ON
    The question was answered, it is a bug. To keep you informed on this issue, I open this discussion.
    Problem:
    The code below works perfectly fine on MS SQL Server 2008 R2 and MS SQL Server 2012, but gives an error every second time the proc is executed on MS SQL Server 2014. If I do not define any index on the temp table, the problem disappears. Defining the index
    after the insert, does not help.
    SET NOCOUNT ON
    GO
    IF EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM sys.procedures WHERE name = 'usp_Test') DROP PROC dbo.usp_Test;
    GO
    CREATE PROC dbo.usp_Test AS
    BEGIN
    SET NOCOUNT ON
    CREATE TABLE #Source(ID integer NOT NULL);
    INSERT INTO #Source VALUES (1), (2), (3);
    CREATE TABLE #Dest (ID integer IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL);
    CREATE INDEX #IDX_Dest ON #Dest (ID);
    PRINT 'Check if the insert might cause an identity crisis';
    SELECT 'Source' AS SourceTable, * FROM #Source;
    SELECT 'Destination' AS DestTable, * FROM #Dest;
    SET IDENTITY_INSERT #Dest ON;
    PRINT 'Do the insert';
    INSERT INTO #Dest (ID) SELECT ID FROM #Source;
    PRINT 'Insert ready';
    SET IDENTITY_INSERT #Dest OFF;
    SELECT * FROM #Dest;
    DROP TABLE #Source;
    DROP TABLE #Dest;
    END;
    GO
    PRINT 'First execution of the proc, everything OK';
    EXEC dbo.usp_Test;
    PRINT '';
    PRINT 'Second execution of the proc, the insert fails.';
    PRINT 'Removing the index #IDX_Dest causes the error to disappear.';
    EXEC dbo.usp_Test;
    GO
    DROP PROC dbo.usp_Test;
    GO

    There is some progress. Communication from a former Microsoft employee tells us this:

    I remember few issues with scan2ident function, I am not sure if they have fixed it however it appears that this is intoduced to SQL 2014 and we need help from MS to get this resolved as it needs code analysis.
    It is not getting simulated for other versions of SQL apart from SQL 2014.
    Also to add, interestingly, the value of rax is not visibly changed and it was successfully passed on to rcx, which has a valid value, so something should have changed the value of rax inside call to function using call qword ptr [r10+50h], and looking at this
    it appears that it might be a list of functions and we are going at particular offset [50h]. So, bottom line is that the call to function qword ptr [r10+50h], should be changing something in rax, and debugging/analyzing this code might give us some more idea.

  • SQL Server 2014 Snapshot agent duplicating constraints

    Hello,
    We are upgrading our server from SQL Server 2008 R2 Std. Ed.  to SQL Server 2014 Std. Ed.
    Our server works with Merge and Transactional publications.
    Our current problem happens when trying to generate the first snapshot using the snapshot agent. Since this is the first time, the snapshot will create all the system tables related with replication and the error happens when creating the table MSmerge_conflict_<publication>_<article>
     because now the snapshot agent is trying to create the constraints from the <article> (a table in our case)  with the same name, so it brings the conflict of having duplicated constraints names and because of that the snapshot agent fails.
     This didn't happen on 2008 because the snapshot agent didn't try to create the constraints before.
    This is the error that we see on the Snapshot Agent Status: There is already an object named"NewAccountPermission" in the database. Could not create constraint or index. See previous errors.
    The exact T-sql statement that is failing is shown on the replication monitor:
    Error messages:
    Message: There is already an object named 'NewAccountPermission' in the database.
    Could not create constraint or index. See previous errors.
    Command Text: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MSmerge_conflict_Roster_AccountPermissions](
    [AccountPermissionID] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [NewAccountPermission]  DEFAULT ([dbo].[getNewAccountPermissionID]()),
    [PermissionName] [varchar](255) NULL,
    [Description] [varchar](255) NULL,
    [rowguid] [uniqueidentifier] ROWGUIDCOL  NOT NULL
    Digging a bit further I searched and compared the snapshot files that creates this table. Here it can be seen that the snapshot files only differ on the creation or not of the constraint.
    Here is an extract o f the 2014 file called AccountPermissions_3.cft
    SET ANSI_NULLS ON
    GO
    SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
    GO
    CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MSmerge_conflict_Roster_AccountPermissions](
    [AccountPermissionID] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [NewAccountPermission]  DEFAULT ([dbo].[getNewAccountPermissionID]()),
    [PermissionName] [varchar](255) NULL,
    [Description] [varchar](255) NULL,
    [rowguid] [uniqueidentifier] ROWGUIDCOL  NOT NULL
    Here is the 2008 version of the same file:
    SET ANSI_NULLS ON
    GO
    SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
    GO
    CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MSmerge_conflict_Roster_AccountPermissions](
    [AccountPermissionID] [int] NOT NULL,
    [PermissionName] [varchar](255) NULL,
    [Description] [varchar](255) NULL,
    [rowguid] [uniqueidentifier] ROWGUIDCOL  NOT NULL
    Any ideas on what is going on? Do I have to configure some properties on the publication now to disallow creating the constraints on the msmerge_conflict table?
    Thank you,
    Alejandro Rivera

    Hi Hilary,
    1) There is an user table called dbo.AccountPermissions. The problem happens when the snapshot agent tries to create MSmerge_conflicts_Roster_AccountPermissions (system table). The database is called Roster.
    2) We use the default dbo schema. Here is the create script for that table (just in case):
    USE [Roster]
    GO
    /****** Object:  Table [dbo].[AccountPermissions]    Script Date: 11/17/2014 7:48:27 PM ******/
    SET ANSI_NULLS ON
    GO
    SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
    GO
    SET ANSI_PADDING ON
    GO
    CREATE TABLE [dbo].[AccountPermissions](
    [AccountPermissionID] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [NewAccountPermission]  DEFAULT ([dbo].[getNewAccountPermissionID]()),
    [PermissionName] [varchar](255) NULL,
    [Description] [varchar](255) NULL,
    [rowguid] [uniqueidentifier] ROWGUIDCOL  NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [MSmerge_df_rowguid_13B9434FF11A44ACB63F5D2927C053FD]  DEFAULT (newsequentialid()),
     CONSTRAINT [pk_accountpermissions] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
    [AccountPermissionID] ASC
    )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]
    ) ON [PRIMARY]
    GO
    SET ANSI_PADDING OFF
    GO
    I'd put a screenshot too, but sadly the forum doesn't allow me until it verifies my account.
    Let me know if you any more info.
    Thank you,

  • Upgrading from SQL Server 2012 Standard to SQL Server 2014 Standard Failover Cluster

    Goal: To upgrade my default instance from SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2014 in a failover cluster.
    Given:
    1) Operating System Windows 2012 R2
    2) 2 Virtual Machines in a cluster with SQL Server as a Guest Cluster resource.  The two VMS are called APPS08 and APPS09.  They are our development environment that is setup similar to our production environment.
    Problem:  When running the SQL Server 2014 upgrade, I started on the VM that was not running the instance.  I then moved onto upgrading on the node that was running the instance.  As soon as the install attempt to failover the running instance
    an install error occurred that it could not failover.  After many install attempts I consistently received the error
    The SQL Server Failover cluster instance name 'Dev01'
    already exists as a cluster resource.  Opening Failover cluster manager there is no record of a DEV01.
    New Strategy:  Create a SQLCluster called DEV07.  At the end of the Install I get 'Resource for instance 'MSSQLSERVER' should not exists.  Neither I nor my Windows 2012 guy understand what Resource the install may be referring to.
    We do not see anything out of the ordinary.
    Any suggestions as to what Resource may be seeing the default instance would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi PSCSQLDBA,
    As your description, you want to upgrade the default instance in SQL Server cluster.
    >> 'SQL Server failover cluster instance name 'Dev01' already exists as cluster resource'
    This error could occur when there is a previously used instance name which may not be removed completely.
    To work around the issue, please use one of the ways below.
    1. At command prompt, type Cluster res. This command will list you all the resources including orphan resources. To delete the orphan resource, type Cluster res <resource name>/delete.
    For more information about the process, please refer to the article:
    http://gemanjyothisqlserver.blogspot.in/2012/12/sql-2008r22012-cluster-installation.html
    2. Delete DNS entries, and force a replication of DNS to the other DNS servers.
    For more information about the process, please refer to the article:
    http://jon.netdork.net/2011/06/07/failed-cluster-install-and-name-already-exists/#solution
    >> 'Resource for instance 'MSSQLSERVER' should not exist'
    This error could occur when you already have MSSQLSERVER as a resource in the cluster, which may not be removed completely. To work around the issue, you could rebuild the SQL Server cluster node.
