SQL Server AlwaysOn- Service Restart Sequence

Team,
Most of our SQL databases are configured on AlwaysON Availability group. I was looking at best practices in restarting a SQL service. Ex: If we change any port details/windows patching etc.
I am particularly looking at the right sequence in which we restart the services.
All our databases are configured in Synchronous Failover mode.

In addition to what Sean has already mentioned, for asynchronous secondaries, you need to convert them to synchronous first and wait for the status to be synchronized before failing over to avoid data loss. Once all of the replicas have
been upgraded, switch it back to asynchronous. The process is outlined

DPM 2010 installation failure (SQL-server Reporting Services Problem)

Hi everyone,
The last 2 days I have been trying to get DPM 2010 installed on a DC. I know this is not recommended, but for our company with the current setup it's the only way to do it.
I have been reading some Microsoft articles (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399416.aspx) about doing this but I fail to do so.
I have made all of the right service accounts (I guess) and am doing everything in the guide but still get the same error message over and over again:
Setup has detected that the installation of Reporting Services is not correctly configured or no instance of Reporting Services is linked to DPM2010 of SQL Server
I just can't get my head around it. This is the error message when I try to install DPM 2010 using an existing SQL-database which I have configured in the SQL 2008-server sp1 installation.
I have enclosed some screenshots so you could maybe check some things that are not correct? Hopefully we can get this issue resolved, because it's driving me crazy to be honest!
Physical server which is ADC and where I need to install SQL-server and DPM: VMBACKUP
The service account for DPM is: DPMSQLSvcsAcct
Also have another service account: DPMR$VMBACKUP
I have also enclosed the error log located in C:\DPMLogs\

Unable to start SQL server agent service

hi,
We have 2 Node SQL Cluster that was working fine. Then We migrated the Linux DNS to Windows DNS successfully.Now restarted the SQL Server after it when we try to start the SQL Server Agent service its says the below msg while machine name and cluster
entries are in windows dns and resolving the IP to name and name to IP
Error msg: The MSSQLSERVER service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service." error message.
But whenever we set the Linux DNS Server ip in SQL Servers then it successfully starts the service. Now i want to know why its happening and what are the requirements or DNS entries/SPN which we missing when we migrated the linux DNS to windows

I was experiencing this issue or one just like it on one of our SQL clusters (SQL Server 2008 R2, two node).
The fix for us was the database Security Login for: NT SERVICE\SQLAgent$<instancename> was missing. The actual service account assigned to the SQL Agent service was a valid domain account and we had the credentials correct in the service
configuration, so no changes were needed there.
Using SQL Server Management Studio we manually added this BUILT IN account ( NT SERVICE\SQLAgent$<instancename> ) to the instance, and then assigned it user role = sysadmin (to go along with the default role = public).
Once this was done, we tried to restart the clustered SQL Agent service and it started and remained started.
Hope this helps someone, we spent over a day pouring over the installation trying to find the cause.

I had to create a registry key and reboot:
1.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

In the right pane, locate the ServicesPipeTimeout entry.
Note If the ServicesPipeTimeout entry does not exist, you must create it. To do this, follow these steps:
a.
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
b.
Type ServicesPipeTimeout, and then press ENTER.
4.
Right-click ServicesPipeTimeout, and then click Modify.
5.
Click Decimal, type 60000, and then click OK.
This value represents the time in milliseconds before a service times out.
6.
Restart the computer.
After the reboot, the service was running. Thanks for your help with this.

MS SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) OLAP Connection - Dimension descriptions

We are trying to create some reports on BO 4.0 on top of BPC 10 MS information.
In order to overcome some issues related to standard connector between BO and BPC (XMLA Planning and consolidation 10 for Microsoft platform), we created a new connection based on discussion MS SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) OLAP Connection - Business Intelligence (BusinessObjects) - SCN Wiki
However we have a major issue with this approach. We cannot see on BO dimension member descriptions.
Is there anything that we missed?

Since your requirement is not in database level, I think the best option is to use AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances (SQL Server).
As part of the SQL Server AlwaysOn offering, AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances leverages Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) functionality to provide local high availability through redundancy at the server-instance level—a
failover cluster instance (FCI). An FCI is a single instance of SQL Server that is installed across Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) nodes and, possibly, across multiple subnets. On the network, an FCI appears to be an instance of SQL
Server running on a single computer, but the FCI provides failover from one WSFC node to another if the current node becomes unavailable.

SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) 2012 High Availability Solution in Azure VM

I have been testing an AlwaysOn high availability failover solution in SQL Server Enterprise on an Azure VM, and this works pretty well as a failover for SQL Server Databases, but I also need a high availability solution for SQL Server
Analysis Server, and so far I haven't found a way to do this. I can load balance it between two machines, but this isn't working as a failover and because of the restriction of not being able to use shared storage in a Failover Cluster in Azure
VM's, I can't set it up as a cluster which is required for AlwaysOn in Analysis Services.
Anyone else found a solution to use an AlwaysOn High Availability for SQL Analysis Services in Azure VM? As my databases are read-only, I would be satisfied with even just a solution that would sync the OLAP databases and switch
the data connection to the same server as the SQL databases.

Sql server 2008 service accounts.

For Sql server agent and Sql Server Database engine a dedicated low privileged
separate accounts are assigned while installing Sql Server 2008 R2.But when
I am specifying Sql Server feature installation in the setup role and in feature
selection I am selecting all ,what should be the nature of accounts that I should
provide for Sql Server Analysis Service and Sql Server Reporting Services?
If I install Sqlserver 2008R2 in my local machine running under windows-7
and use a local standard user account to run my DB engine, would I be
able to access the databases in Sql Server 2008 installed in a remote
server in the same domain?

I agree with Erland.
SQL Service account is used while performing any OS level operation by SQL Server process (sqlservr.exe). On the other hand, the account which is connecting to SQL Server will have it's own permission in Server/Database provided via Logins/Users.

SQL Server Analysis Services Filter web part.

Hi all
In a NTLM farm with 1 SharePoint and 1 SQL server, I am using clamis based authentication for Excel Services app in SharePoint Server 2010.
While all Excel documents work, I get error on "SQL Server Analysis Services Filter" web part.
The filter works when I am logged on the sharepoint server and open the Intranet to use it, but doesn't work if I reach the Intranet by not logging on the SharePoint server.
The error I get is on the filter web part:
"An error occured while retrieving filter values (The connection either timed out or was lost).
Anyone else that have had the same problem?
Any ideas to troubleshoot? :)

OK, I solved this problem with the following workaround: (Notice that the problem may be solved when you have completed just one of the steps, so be sure you make a test everytime you have completed one).
First:
Try changing your Excel Services Application File Access Method to
IMPERSONATE, that can be achieved in SharePoint Central Administration
-> Manage Service Applications -> Excel Services Application Settings ->
Global Settings. (Make sure the option for Allow Cross Domain Access is unchecked if you don't have a security certificate installed on the server, also in the most cases you don't need this option). Please take note of your Excel Services
Application ID.
Then modify your performance point data connection file in Excel, by oppening Connection Properties and in the Definitions tab, click on Authentication, set Authentication Type to Use a Stored Account and then write your excel services application ID in
the textbox labeled "Application ID", by default the excel services application ID is
"Excel Services Application" (no quotes), now click OK. Then click Export Connection File and overwrite current connection file in SharePoint.
(You may need to restart the Excel Calculations Service on Manage Services in this Farm page).
Second: (If before step doesn't solved the problem already)
Change the service account for the SQL Server Analysis Service to an account that have Delegation permission or change the current account to LocalSystem.
Third (If the other two steps doesn't solved the problem).
Check in SharePoint Central Administration if the service Claims To Windows Token is started, if not, just start it.
I solved the connection problem, but now When I get the hierarchies in the filter, I can not drill more than 2 levels down, in the third level it throws the following exception: "There was an error in the callback"

HADR Solution for SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) 2014 on Azure Iaas

Hi All
I am required to build a HA/DR solution for SQL Server and SSAS 2014 on Azure. So far I could build AlwaysOn high availability solution for SQL Server on Azure but haven't found any solution for SSAS.
Failover Clustering is not an option on azure because of the restriction of not been able to use shared storage. We also determined that the cost savings of using SQL + the cost of the 3rd Party replication tool was a wash (ie no real cost savings).
Any lead on this would be appreciated.

A clustered implementation of SSAS can be configured in Microsoft Azure. Such a configuration would need to meet all the requirements stated in the following document including Active Directory and storage.

We have a way to add the Windows Authentication-logins /OS users in SSIS
Component Services -> Computers -> My Computer -> DCOM Config -> MSDTSServer
Right click on MSDTSServer
Click properties
Click on the Security tab
Select Customize and add the users/groups to the Launch/Activation and Access tabs accordingly
Add the user to the local Distributed COM Users group
Restart the SSIS service

Hi PREM,
If I understand correctly, you want to use SQL Server Authentication log to SQL Server Integration Services.
Based on my research, only Microsoft Windows Authentication is available for SSIS. So we cannot use SQL Server Authentication log to SQL Server Integration Services. Besides, we can only add OS users in the DCOM Config permission area.

QSUF (Query string url filter) and SQL Server reporting services report viewer parameters

Hi,
this is my issue:
I have a SQL Server reporting services web part on a page with a report with 1 parameter, lets say it's a client list
Then i have a QSUF that will be used to filter the clients list through the URL
However, once i connect the filter and the report viewer web part, the parameter goes away and is no longer accessible
I'd like to somehow keep the parameter visible, in case there is no parameter sent through the URL, i would like the user to be able to choose a client from the parameter drop down list
I saw that there is a "send empty if no values are passed" option, but i can't seem to get this working properly and i don't know if this option will make the parameter visible again
Any help would be appreciated

According to your post, my understanding is that the query string url filter web part not worked well with SQL server reproting services web part.
Did you use the Wiki page layout in your environment?
You can change the page to a web part page, then check whether it work.

Unable to insert sql server reporting services report viewer webpart

Hello,
We are trying to add a SQL Server Reporting Services Report Viewer and when we click add we get the following error message
The file you imported is not valid. Verify that the file is a Web Part description file (*.webpart or *.dwp) and that it contains well-formed XML.

The Report Viewer Web Part is a custom Web Part that is installed by the Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint Products and associated with report definition (.rdl) files that are processed by a Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services report
server.
To install the Web Part, you must run Setup for the Reporting Services Add-in. You should not install or uninstall the Web Part independently. It is part of the add-in and can only be installed through the add-in setup package. The Report Viewer Web Part
file name is ReportViewer.dwp. It is located in the Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\15\template\features\reportserver folder and should not be moved to other folders.
To use the Web Part, you must have installed and configured the Reporting Services Add-in and configured the report server for SharePoint integration.

Unable to start SQL Server Browser service in Sql server 2005

we are unable to start the SQL browser service on one of our machine with below error.
I believe this to be the reason, why we could not connect to the instance with below error
I tried troubleshooting as mentioned here, by changing
value in registry from 1 to 0, but still no luck.
SQLservices are also running.
Please help on how to resolve this!

You say that SQL Server Browser Service belongs to a SQL Server 2005, but based on the name of the instance is a SQL Server
2012 instance.
Do you have any issues installing/uninstalling SQL Server 2005 or 2012? One of them 32-bit and the other 64-bit?

In this article, I will demonstrate so how to create calculated measure using AMO in SSAS?
Prerequisites
Before create calculated measure using AMO, you need to ensure that the following components were installed in your server.
The multidimensional database AdventureWorks Multidimensional Model 2012
A SQL Server with SSIS and SSAS installed
The AMO libraries installed:
X86 Package (SQL_AS_AMO.msi)
X64 Package (SQL_AS_AMO.msi)
Solution
Here is the detail steps to create calculated measure using AMO in SSAS.
Open SSDT and create a new SSIS project.
Drag Script Task to the design surface.
Click SSIS-> Variables to open the Variables window and add two variables that used to connect to the server and database.
Create a connection to connect to SSAS server.
Rename the connection name to ssas.
Double click the Script Task to open Script Task Editor.
Add Connection and Database variables to ReadWriteVariables textbox and then click Edit Script button.
Add AMO reference in the Solution Explore window.
Copy the script below and paste it into the script.

How do I post to SQL Server Reporting services

I have been using MS forums for almost 20 years but in the current incarnation I find it utterly imnpossible to post to anywhere useful.
I have a serious issue I need to resolve with SQL Server reporting services but cannot find how to get this message posted because the options I get when trying to post in "FORUM CATEGORY" seem utterly unrelated to what I am doing.
What can I do?
