SQL Server and Java problem
Hi,
I am having a problem using Java and JDBC talking to a SQL Server database. On a new record or on an existing record the record will not update if someone types into a text field. If they don't type into that field it will insert the record just fine. The field is defined Text with a size of 16 in the database. In Java the variable is defined string. The error is Runtime Error 129, Record Not Updated. Is there a list of the explanations of the error messages and why they might be caused somewhere? Do you think the size of the field is what the problem is? Or is it the field type? Thanks for any help.
I would try varchar(16). It may be the database is tryin to enforce that all strings be 16 characters and refusing to update if they're not.

One potential solutions is to use a custom SQL server JDBC driver instead of going through the ODBC bridge. This will minimize dependencies and should also improved performance. Hope this helps.

Accessing MS Sql Server with Java classes - problem connecting to socket
I found an example at this location which uses java classes to connected to MS Sql Server.
http://search400.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid3_gci1065992,00.html
--bummer - it is a login location - so I will include the article
Anyway, the example is using Websphere, but I am still on Jbuilder (will get wsad soon). So I planted the classes from the example in
C:\Borland\JBuilder\jkd1.4\jre\lib\ext\...the classes
Then I copied the code from the example to my jpx project and got an error that it could not connect to the socket. The only thing I changed in the code was the connection string:
--original string from example:
Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://1433", "");
I was getting an error with the 2 argument version of DriverManager - and the second argument here was empty (properties argument). Here was my connection string:
Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://Myserver:1433;User=sa;Password=");
I am only using the 1 argument version of DriverManager. Note that the password=" is blank because my RnD workstation is standalone - no one accesses the sql server except me - so no password. I also left out the last semicolon I noticed. Any suggestions appreciated how I could fix this.
Thanks

Sample code: Accessing MS SQL Server database from the iSeries
Eitan Rosenberg

Rating: --- (out of 5)
Nowadays with the help of Java the iSeries can be integrated with other databases quite easy. This tip shows you how. The code included here uses the free Microsoft driver that can be downloaded from here. (SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC Service Pack 3)
If your SQL server does not include the Northwind Sample Database you can find it here.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=07287b11-0502-461a-b138-2aa54bfdc03a&displaylang=en
The download contains the following files:
msbase.jar
mssqlserver.jar
msutil.jar
Those files needs to be copied to the iSeries directories (/home/r_eitan/ExternalJARs).
Here's the directory structure (on the iSeries) for this sample:
/home/r_eitan/ExternalJARs - Microsoft files (msbase.jar,mssqlserver.jar,msutil.jar)
/home/r_eitan/JdbcTest02 - My code (Main.java,Main.class)
The Java code
import java.sql.*;
import java.io.*;
class Main {
* Connect to Microsoft SQL server and download file northWind.products as tab
* seperated file. (products.txt)
public static void main(String args[]) {
try {
PrintStream outPut = new PrintStream(new BufferedOutputStream(new FileOutputStream("products.txt")));
Class.forName("com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver");
//Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://1433", "");
Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://Myserver:1433;User=sa;Password=");
System.out.println("Connection Done");
connection.setCatalog("northWind");
String sqlCmdString = "select * from products";
Statement statement = connection.createStatement();
ResultSet resultSet = statement.executeQuery(sqlCmdString);
ResultSetMetaData resultSetMetaData = resultSet.getMetaData();
int columnCount = resultSetMetaData.getColumnCount();
// Iterate throught the rows in resultSet and
// output the columns for each row.
while (resultSet.next()) {
for (int index = 1; index <=columnCount; ++index)
String value;
switch(resultSetMetaData.getColumnType(index))
case 2 :
case 3 :
value = resultSet.getString(index);
break;
default :
value = """ + resultSet.getString(index) + """;
break;
outPut.print(value + (index < columnCount ? "t" : ""));
outPut.println();
outPut.close();
resultSet.close();
connection.close();
System.out.println("Done");
catch (SQLException exception)
exception.printStackTrace();
catch (Exception exception)
exception.printStackTrace();
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------My guess is that the server's host name isn't right. It necessarily (or even usually) the "windows name" of the computer. Try with the numeric IP address instead (type "ipconfig" to see it).
First aid check list for "connection refused":
- Check host name in connect string.
- Check port number in connect string.
- Try numeric IP address of server host in connect string, in case name server is hosed.
- Are there any firewalls between client and server blocking the port.
- Check that the db server is running.
- Check that the db server is listening to the port. On the server, try: "telnet localhost the-port-number". Or "netstat -an", there should be a listening entry for the port.
- Try "telnet serverhost the-port-number" from the client, to see if firewalls are blocking it.
- If "telnet" fails: try it with the numeric ip address.
- If "telnet" fails: does it fail immediately or after an obvious timeout? How long is the timeout?
- Does the server respond to "ping serverhost" or "telnet serverhost" or "ssh serverhost"? -
How do i connect to sql server using java?
hi ever body
i need to connect to sql server using java
what is the driver i will use?
thanksMicrosoft make a jdbc driver and it is readily available through MSDN. Here is a link http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/data/aa937724.aspx. Whatever jdbc driver you are looking for, Google it, and if it exists you'll find it in 10 seconds.

Connect to MS Sql Server from Java Source
Hi,
Is there any way I could connect to ms sql server from Java source? I know I can call java source from function thats easy but what I really want is capability to connect to non-oracle(MS SQL server) from my java source and then call it from function.
I don't know if JDBC driver for SQL server is even installed/available. Is there a way I could find it out form my IDE? I know sqlJ does compile but I have never used sqlj. help!!!
SinhaYou'll probably have better luck in a Java forum or a Microsoft forum.

Extract the data from SQL Server and Import into Oracle
Hi,
I would like to run a daily job that will export the table data from SQL server table (it will be only one or two table) and Import back into Oracle table (it might one or two table tables).
Could you please guide me that how can i do this using either sql server or oracle?
We have oracle 9.2 and sql server 2005.
Normally i do from flat file which is generated by source destination nand i dump into oracle using sql*loader but this time I have to directly extract/export the data from MS Sql server and load into Oracle table, mostly it will reload so i might doing any massaging data during the load.
If you show me the detail approach, it will be really appreciated.
I have access to Sql server but i don't how to use sql server to do this or using oracle as a daily job even becuase have to schedule the job for this as it will be a daily job.
Thanks,
poratipsUnless you can find an open source ODBC driver for SQL Server that runs on Solaris (and I wouldn't be overly hopeful there) Heterogeneous Services would require that you license something-- a third party ODBC driver, a new Oracle instance, or an Oracle Transparent Gateway.
As I stated below, you could certainly use SQL Server's ETL tool, DTS. Oracle's ETL tools would require additional licensing since you're just on 9.2. You could also write a small application (Java or otherwise) that connected to both databases and transferred the data. If you're particularly enterprising, you could load the SQL Server Type 4 JDBC driver into Oracle's JVM and write a Java stored procedure that connected to the SQL Server database via JDBC, but that's a pretty convoluted approach.

Compare SQL Server and Oracle syntax
Hello, I am very new to the Oracle DB as I have been working with MS SQL Server for many years. I have a SQL statement that works fine in MSSQL but seems to not work in Oracle. Is this a syntax problem or do I need to look elsewhere?
DECLARE @as_master_key varchar(26)
EXEC [dbo].[GET_UNIQUE_MASTER_KEY]
@as_project_name = N'CMDEMO',
@as_database_site = N'CMPL',
@as_user_initials = N'SK',
@as_table = N'SUBMITTAL_CATEGORY',
@as_master_key =
@as_master_key
OUTPUT SELECT @as_master_key as N'master_key'
This is what I use in MSSQL and it works fine - but I am porting this application to an Oracle backend and it fails. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance to this newbie. :)SQL Server and Oracle are two completely different RDBMS'.
You'd be best not to try and port SQL Server code to Oracle SQL or PL/SQL directly as it will not favour the power of Oracle's features correctly.
I'm not sure what your code is supposed to be doing (I find SQL Server code awful to read, and never understand the need for "@" before variable names, that just seems to show a lazy parser (or lazy coder who designed the parser)).
From what I can guess it's going to be something like...
SQL code...
create or replace sequence my_master_key;PL/SQL code...
DECLARE
as_master_key number;
as_project_name varchar2(20) := 'CMDEMO';
as_database_site varchar2(20) := 'CMPL';
as_user_initials varckar2(5) := 'SK';
as_table varchar2(30) := 'SUBMITTAL_CATEGORY';
BEGIN
select my_master_key.nextval
into as_master_key
from dual;
-- In 11g you could replace this select with just:
-- as_master_key = my_master_key.nextval;
END;This get's a unique sequence value into a variable and declares all the other variables. What you want to do with them after that I don't know. -
Hi everyone,
I am new to SQL server....I am learning C# programming using visual studio 2013 . And I want to learn SQL database language to create and practice C# database project....My computer meets all the hardware requirement for SQL installation (i.e. My computer
has window 7 OS , 80 GB freen HD and 6 GB RAM. ) Therefore I download Microsoft SQL server express 2012 try to install it in my computer (which already has visual studio).
But during installation of SQL server I have problem ...it says
the server doesn't respond in timely fashion. When I research about it everyone were saying uninstall sql and reinstall again. I uninstall and re install but still having same problem...
The database engine also not installed displaying same error.
I don't know how can i install sql server 2012 to use with visual studio in same computer.
Can somebody please help with SQL installation please ?
It will be great help.

MS SQL Server in Java/J2EE Environment
Dear all,
I wanted to understand pros and cons of choosing MS SQL Server in Java/J2EE environment.
Could anybody share some thoughts or web resources?
Personally I hate using MS SQL Server for Java/J2EE based applications. But one of my clients wanted to have following environment for his production environment and he insist on using this environment for application development. So I just wanted to understand pros and cons of J2EE (Application) + MS SQL Server ( rdbms )
MS SQL Server
J2EE/Flex
Windows OS
Thanks

How to access sql server using java script
Hi, Is it possible to connect to sql server in java script. I'm using microsoft jdbc driver for connectivity to sql server.
ThanksHi, Is it possible to connect to sql server in java
script. I'm using microsoft jdbc driver for
connectivity to sql server.If you want to ask about Javascript, you are in the wrong place. Go and find some JavaScript forum. Actually, you could connect to database from javascript using Ajax or the like mainly because you could have Java code behind the scenes, but then that too is not something I would want to discuss here. So, go find the correct place for the topic. -

Hello,
I use Entity Framework code first approach.
My project is working fine with SQL Server. But, I want to access Oracle too. I want to switch SQL Server and Oracle in run time.
I am able to access Oracle using "Oracle.ManagedDataAccess.EntityFramework.dl" in a new project.
But, Is this possible to access SQL Server and Oracle in the same project.
Thanks,
MuruganThis should be possible with a Code-First workflow. In Code-First the database mapping layer is generated at runtime.

Getting List of SQL server and on selection of server get List of Databases using SMO
Hi,
I need to have functionality where I need to populate List of available SQL servers from local network, and when i select SQL server from list, get the list of Databases from that Server.
For this i referenced SQL SMO Dll's and placed two drop down, one lists Server names, and one lists Database names.
Dlls refered are:
Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo.dll
Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc.dll
Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo.dll
Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlClrProvider.dll
Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlEnum.dll
Above DLL's i have copied from SQL server SQL server 2008 installed location
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\SDK\Assemblies
DLL version : 11.0.3000.0
Code i have used is:
private void MainForm_Load(object sender,
EventArgs e)
DataTable dataTable = SmoApplication.EnumAvailableSqlServers(false);
cmbServers.ValueMember = "Name";
cmbServers.DataSource = dataTable;
//Now, load Databases on selection of Server combo box.
private void cmbServers_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender,
EventArgs e)
cmbDatabases.Items.Clear();
if (cmbServers.SelectedIndex != -1)
string serverName = cmbServers.SelectedValue.ToString();
Server server = new Server(serverName);
try
foreach (Database database in server.Databases)
cmbDatabases.Items.Add(database.Name);
catch (Exception ex)
string exception = ex.Message;
It works where SQL server is installed, but in systems where no SQL server is installed, it is not working, it is not returning list of SQL server and so database list.
Query is> can you please help me in this regard, what i am missing here, do i need to install any client component to use this?, or anything else what i need to do to make this functionality work.
Thanks,
HemalThanks Michael for replying.
I have gone through the reply, and the link on how to get the SMO library installed.
"To install the Client Tooks SDK without installing SQL Server, install Shared Management Objects from the SQL Server feature pack.
If you want to ensure that SQL Server Management Objects is installed on a computer that will run your application, you can use the Shared Management Objects .msi in the SQL Server feature pack."
I have few questions on "Shared Management Objects .msi"
Where do i get "Shared Management Objects .msi".
only installing this msi will install SMO?.
Can i ship this msi with my application installer?
do i need to install x86 on x86 system and x64 version of msi in x64 system, or x86 can work fine with both, my application
is x86 only.
Thanks,
Hemal
