Squeezed image

Was wondering if the experts out there could help this newbie.
When I export my Motion project as a mp4 or other QuickTime movie, everything looks as it should.
If I try to export using Compressor or Import directly into DVDSP, the background image is squeezed. Other images in the project appear normal. Any ideas? Thanks!

Rather than trying to explain this, specialcase's article does a much better job than I ever could:
http://www.motionsmarts.com/tutorials/nutsandbolts/sizematters.html
Essentially if your image plus effects is larger than 2048x2048, your graphics card can't process it, so the software has to scale it to send it to the card and there can be problems with this process and when rendering outside of Motion, it gets worse...

  • Squeezed Image in QuickTime from FCP

Although I've come close to finding my specific issue when perusing the discussions, I haven't had much success.
I shot in 16:9 on the XL2. I changed all my settings in FCP before logging and capturing to accommodate this. It looks fine in FCP, including in the Canvas. When I export to QuckTime however, the image is squeezed to fit a 4:3 aspect ratio (meaning, it's in 4:3, with the image pushed in on the sides and everything is stretched vertically). I tried different settings in the export window ("Current Settings", "DV NTSC Anamophic", etc.), but it always comes out the same in the end. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

When you export you can change the SIZE to reflect 16:9 or you can change the aspect ratio in the Quicktime settings once you start playing it in QT. Apple-J, I think.

  • Narrow (squeezed) image!

Help! I am a newbie! When I export my video using quicktime conversion the result is a squeezed version of what I see in FCE.
The framesize in the sequence is set for 1440 x 1080. Is this the problem? How do I change that? What are the best settings for getting a good looking video exported for YouTube?
    Help!
    Thanks

Change the frame size when you export it to 1920x1080 or some multiple of that.
You might do a forum search for YouTube.

  • 480x270 still squeezed

I'm experimenting with Compressor right now, but am wondering about a setting. I need to upload my movie to IMDb and their parameters are Quicktime 480x360 at 30fps. Of course 480x360 results in a squeezed image so I'm trying to output my original 16x9 file (980x720) to a Quicktime movie file to the suggested 480x270 size. Even after padding the top and bottom 45, I'm still getting an image that is slightly squeezed. Am I missing something? Thanks!

i was told back in 6.02 that i needed to do this in photoshop anyway. it's been my workflow. perhaps something that can be submitted to fcp suggestions.

  • Help - once transferred to DVD, video looks "squeezed"

I'm new to this so thanks for bearing with me.
I copied a movie from my camcorder to iMovie, and Shared it to iDVD. When I burned the movie from iDVD onto a DVD-R (I have a PB G4 with Superdrive), then watched the DVD, the picture looks compressed or "squeezed" together. Is there something I need to do differently, a change in formatting somewhere, perhaps related to the 16:9? Thanks for any help! Hope I supplied enough info.

Thank you - I can answer some of your questions but not all (yet). But in the meantime, I was also wondering whether this "squeezed" image problem might only be apparent on my laptop's DVD player - and not if I play the DVD on my TV? (I am traveling and can't test that yet).

  • Changing a 720x405 animated sequence to fit anamorphic screen

    Hi to all,
I just recieved a series of jpegs for an animated pal anamorphic sequence.
They are in 720 x 405 (true pal 16/9) but should have probably been in 768 x 576 to compensate for the 0.9 pixel width.
So in my Pal seq i get either a doubly vertically squeezed image but it fits horizontaly (when i flag it as anamorphic), and when i don't flag it , i get a correct looking anamorphic image with borders on all sides.
These jpeg series can not be rerendered. Time does not permit it. So i've scaled the 3D animation to make it fit vertically, and then squeezd the aspect ratio to make it fit horizontally. The aspect is not quite correct but it fills the screen. And loses quality!
Any suggestions on how i could solve this 720 x 405 problem with minimum quality loss, and have it fit my screen?
thank you for all your help,
    Tee.

  • Menu Glitch in 16:

I've got a 16:9 menu in an SD project that gets squeezed before going to a 4:3 video clip. I don't see this in a set-top box but I do in WMV player and the Apple DVD player. How do I eliminate the squeeze image appearing before the video plays?

Add a menu in between that is 16:9 and has a black clip as background. Set time out to 1 sec and action to the 4:3 track.

  • How to set "stretch to fill" in AME CS6?

So... We have alot of footage, that is set to DV/PAL Anamorphic... In other words, a squeezed image of ppl in an 720x576 50i (aspect ratio of 1.09).
What I want to do is the following:
    - Use Adobe Media Encoder (NOT PREMIER PRO) to...
    - Set a "watch folder" to dump the footage into and...
    - Export this as 1024x576 25p (aspect ratio: square pixel)...
    - And this is supposed to "stretch to fit", thus removing the anamorphic picture...
I have tried setting the settings to this in AME, with no success as I get two black pillars left and right of the footage, with no options to actually stretch the image to fit.
Now, in PremierPro CS6 there is an option in the export that lets me do the "stretch to fit" option... Wich is all good, and works fine on that single file. But this is NOT an option when dealing with the amount of footage we have here. We're talking well over 100 shots with this setting. And going into premier and setting this for each individual sequence is just plain stupid and illogical in itself.
So where is this option in the AME CS6 software itself, or is it simply removed? I know this was there in Adobe Flash Encoder CS3, but has been missing ever since CS4... I was kinda hoping I would find it in CS6, as Adobe usually listens to people, and are a profesional toolkit used by alot of professionals, but I just cant seem to find it...
    (source: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2691915)
Any help and/or response of the constructive kind would be nice... But do not tell me to use PremierPro to do this... As this is not an option...

This is all good, and works perfectly fine when dealing with individual clips... However, when we have well over 100 clips... I REALLY would like this option for a "watch folder" that I can then dump these files into, and just let AME work it without me having to actually go in and change it to "stretch to fit" on each and every file.
Is there somewhere I can change the default setting? Or a place in the "create watch folder" dialog box where I can find this option?

  • Picture quality from iDVD

OK, I made my first DVD of travel pictures using iDVD. These are the same pictures I use as screen savers on my 23 inch Apple HD Cinema Display. I took these shots at the highest resolution possible in the best conditions possible and they give me great detail, colour, contrast and 'snap' on the screen. However, these exact same files are LOUSY when transferred to iDVD. What have I done wrong? If iDVD can't give me the same quality as my screensavers and iPhoto projects, what can? The pictures were set to a 'normal' 4:3 screen ratio, not even the 16:9 HD one. All suggestions welcome.
    PM G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The present DVDs that we can create with applications like iDVD have LOW RESOLUTION video images- less than 640x480 pixels NTSC (768x576 pixels PAL). In addition, they are interlaced which can cause flicker when the images are viewed.
NTSC video resolution is less than 0.3 mega pixels! How could you expect such a low resolution image device (video DVD) to compare with with your high resolution digital images on your 23" HD display?
When we finally get TRUE HD DVDs things will get slightly better.
BTW, although you can produce 'HD 16x9' DVDs with iDVD 6, they are NOT true HD DVDs - these discs only squeeze the 16:9 format to fit the 4:3 format of the present DVD system and the squeezed image has to be 'un-squeezed' to view on a HD display.
    >If iDVD can't give me the same quality as my screensavers and iPhoto projects, what can?
Nothing. As I said, the current DVD system doesn't make that possible. Sorry.

  • 'Vector' Distortions when exporting to widescreen in AE CS3

    Hi
I'm sure this is probably quite a simple issue, but i am new to AE and cannot find the answer to this anywhere. Basically i am exporting my compositions to use as widescreen for DVD. The exported video footage looks fine but any non-video elements used seem to 'quiver and shake' - examples of this are AE text, imported jpg logos and vector lines created and masked from within AE. I accidentally exported as best settings on one occasion rather than DV - this gave me a 'squarer' video file but it did render the  'distorting elements' perfectly.  This is also the case when i export as a flv. file - wrong proportions but quality render of the 'distorting elements'. As an aside, is it possible to export the composition as a widesceen flv file?
The settings i am using are detailed below (at default settings)
Render setting is DV settings and my chosen outpout module is Microsoft DV PAL 48khz, my composition settings are Preset: PAL D1/DV Widescreen (720 x 576)   PAR: D1/DV PAL Widesceen (1.42) and the Frame Aspect Ratio is 16:9.
As i said i am new to this so it well be that i am not using the best settings for this task.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be given, Tom

Your vector artwork from Illustrator should be interpreted as Square Pixels. It's highly unusual for Vector artwork to be anything else.
Anything you brought in from Photoshop or other image editing program should also be interpreted as Square Pixels unless you specifically created the artwork in Photoshop as non-square using one of the Photoshop Presets.
The composition you set up for rendering should be created using one of the presets. It looks like you're either using NTSC DV Widescreen or NTSC D1 Widescreen. Maybe you're in PAL land and using PAL D1/DV Widescreen. Make sure that you don't resize anything in the Output module.
In the composition window, if you have Pixel Aspect Ratio Correction turned on your footage will appear as it will when you look at on a TV. Nothing will be distorted, but there will be some ugly aliasing artifacts in the comp window because of the onscreen interpolation of the pixels. These artifacts will not show up in your render. If you don't like looking at the aliasing problems then you can turn off PARC in the Composition Panel and put up with the distorted (squeezed) image.
The way you keep things undistorted is to interpret the PAR of each asset in the Project Panel as it actually is and let AE do the PAR management. AE will usually guess correctly with footage (video). It may miss widescreen tags so you'll have to watch for that.
AE will always guess incorrectly for Illustrator or Photoshop artwork that should be square pixels but is created at a standard non-square image size. IOW, if you create artwork that is 720 X 480 pixels it will always be interpreted as NTSC DV pixels. The only time this is correct is when you intentionally create your artwork using this preset. I personally think that this seldom a good idea and only do this on rare occasions.
    I hope this helps.

  • Slideshow DVD & Export: Pixels Wrong Proportion

I have created a slideshow in iPhoto 5.0 with the format set to 4:3 iDVD, TV; Ken Burns effect enabled. The presentation plays flawlessly on the Powerbook (1.5ghz, OS 10.4).
When I export the slideshow as a Quicktime movie at 720x480, or send the slideshow to iDVD, upon generating the new media file (.mov) that is bound for DVD, iPhoto treats the .mov as ordinary square pixel material, and does not convert the square pixels of the slideshow's still images into the rectangular pixels of the digital video standard. The result is that slideshows sent to iDVD or exported to 720x480 Quicktime for subsequent authoring in DVDSP appear to be squeezed horizontally when the DVD is played.
You can confirm the problem by opening the .mov file created by iPhoto during "Send to iDVD." When opened directly with the Quicktime player and viewed at 720x480, if properly prepared that file should appear elongated/stretched horizontally (as all 4:3 DV material normally does when viewed as square pixels), so that it will appear in correct proportion when displayed as rectangular pixels per the DV/DVD spec for 4:3 material on televisions or software DVD players.
Incorrect preparation of the .mov file by iPhoto is a major problem. Apple needs to fix this, so that photos displayed on DVDs created via iPhoto's Slideshow function will not be distorted when the DVDs are played.
If you've never noticed this, please review your 4:3 slideshow DVDs and verify that all of the images are squeezed!
    Comments?

Thank you for pointing out that iPhoto 5.0.4 has resolved the problem of improperly-proportioned slideshow images when "sending to iDVD." I implemented the 5.0.4 update and the images now appear correct when viewed in iDVD.
However, even with 5.0.4, choosing "export" of a large size .mov (720x480) still yields an unadjusted square-pixel file, which will result in squeezed images if used as source material for a DVD (in DVDSP, for example). Apple should correct the export of 720x480 files, also.
It seems as though Apple software engineers have provided the ability to output the 720x480 file size, but they fail to appreciate that the specific 720x480 size nearly always will be used in digital video editing, or as source material for a DVD, neither of which utilize square pixels. There is virtually no use for 720x480 exports of iDVD slideshows, unless the pixel aspect ratio conforms to the DV and DVD standard.
At present, if you want to generate slideshows in iPhoto with the automatic Ken Burns effect enabled, but include them on DVDs authored in DVDSP, a workaround is to "send to iDVD", which builds a 720x540 file; then use Compressor to create the 720x480 .m2v file for the DVD. You will lose more image resolution during that process than if iPhoto directly produced the 720x480 size with the proper pixel specs.

  • 16:9 ...what is the problem?

Okay. Why is it so hard to simply export a 16:9 movie out of FCE HD? I just don't get it. From what I can tell, the correct setting to play back correctly on a new 16:9 US set is 960 x 540 (a "custom" QT setting) Why on Gods green earth is this setting (if it IS the correct setting) not in the long, long list of export options?
I've tried using just QT export and it looks fine in the FCEHD window, but drag it to QT and its squashed horizontally. Whats correct?
I've got to be missing something! Can someone simply tell me how to do this?

    Not really.
I'm guessing with did this in a DV sequence. The format for DV, and I'm guessing in NTSC, maybe it's PAL, but you don't say. let's assume it's NTSC, the DV NTSC format is 720x480 regardless of the aspect ratio. 4:3 material fits into the frame using a pixel aspect ratio of 0.9, a narrow, tall pixel, as opposed to a square pixel. A 16:9 image fits into that frame by squeezing the image anamorphically. This makes the image look tall and skinny. This is done in the camera, either with an anamorphic lens or is done electronically in the camera. The video application or the camera expands out the squeezed image so it plays back properly. QuickTime does not do that. If you record your 16:9 material onto tape in the 16:9 anamorphic format and play it back to your widescreen TV from the camera, it will look fine. That's the way the system is designed to work.
If you export this you then have to take it to an application or a system that understands anamorphic video. You don't say so I don't know what you're doing to get it onto your TV set. Are you making a DVD? Are you trying to play it back from your computer to the TV somehow? Computers only understand square pixels and know nothing about aspect ratios. Some applications do. QuickTime doesn't do it automatically. In the QT player you can go to Movie Properties and in Visual Settings for the video track turn on high quality and reset the frame size, 853x480 is the most commonly used. You can also in the overall properties go to Presentation and set Conform Aperture to Clean.

  • Screening HD with a 16:9 projector

I thought it would be easy...
I need to prepare a clip, captured in HD, to be screened with a projector, set to 16:9. When I export it using the current sequence settings (Frame Size =1440X1080 (16:9); Pixel Aspect Ratio=HD (1440X1080); Compressor=HDV 1080i60) and screen it - the result is a squeezed image (smaller and wider), although the way it looks on my computer screen seems right. The only way I found to get around it and to get the correct image was to Export>QuickTime Movie and then change the settings to DV NTSC 48KHz Anamorphic.
But this, of course, makes me loose the HD resolution...
I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions?
    THNX
    ~y

I am sure you have checked this but... does the projector have different HD settings? This could explain the squeezed appearance. Are you writing to DVD and using the player to connect to the projector? What is that connection?

  • Best workflow PAL (Avid DV) to NTSC

    Hi friends,
I received a 2-hour concert video (I was informed that this is going to be 16:9) from Prague with the following Item Properties (from FCP):
    Creator: QuickTime Player
    Vid Rate: 25 fps
    Frame Size: 720 x 576
    Compressor Avid DV
    Data Rate: 19.3 MB/sec
Pixel Aspect: PAL - CCIR 601
    Field Dominance: Upper (Odd)
Originally, this file shows from "Get Info":
    Dimensions: 1024 x 576
Codecs: AVUI, AVdv, AV1x, Linear PCM, Timecode
I had to download the Avid QuickTime Codecs LE 2.1 from Avid's site to have FCP recognize and accept this PAL file.
    Question...
What's the proper setting for FCP (7.0.2) prior to importing this file (Easy Setup, etc.)?
When selecting NTSC using DV-NTSC under Easy Setup then importing this PAL file, my canvas is showing squeezed image (the people appear much taller) knowing that the intended 16:9 is not properly displayed...
What is the best workflow from FCP to Compressor?
What is your recommended settings once in Compressor (with a 16:9 final output)?
I tried using the DV NTSC from Advanced Format Conversions but the preview still shows the squeezed video.
Any other tips for this noob greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

    You're good to go
I think you should leave the field filter alone, for now.
    Now edit away.
when you're done export a MOV file, using "current settings." that leaved the codec as it is in the timeline. This file can be either self contained or non-self contained. The former is an archive and the latter a reference that can be deleted later.
Then bring the rendered MOV into Compressor. Apply the DVD presets for M2v audio and ac3 audio. Those two files will then go into DVD Studio Pro for authoring.
The settings for DVD video and audio can be adjusted for compression and other settings. You'll want to make sure that it's set for PAL and 16:9

  • Getting 853.3 pixels when I want 720

I'm trying to convert a large batch of hdv media into DV media anamorphic so I can edit in a DV timeline and have the final DVD product be widescreen. I cannot edit HDV and just convert the sequence. I need to convert all my clips and must edit a DV sequence. However, when I use Compressor setting for advanced format conversion DV NTSC, I end up with media files that are 853 X 480 instead of squeezed 720 X 480. With certain settings I manage to get a squeezed image but 640 wide rather than 720. What settings do I need to change to get my wide HDV clip squished into a 720 X 480 clip?
I get exactly what I want when I use media manager in FCP 5 to export a "recompress" using DV NTSC - my wide HDV image squeezed into a 720 X 480 image. But I really don't want to use media manager for this (I have my reasons). I need to be able to drag my clips into compressor and apply the correct settings. Seems like I've tried everything.

    David Gardner7 wrote:
I've also tried both the DV NTSC compressor setting and the DV NTSC Anamorphic compressor setting. It's possible there is some combination of all these that I have missed.
If you're indeed using the DV-NTSC Anamorphic setting in Compressor, it should as Kyle mentions, open up in QT Player as 853x480. But that is only for playback purposes. As mentioned, it should import into FCP as 720x480 with the Anamorphic flag set.
That is the correct behavior for the setting and what you want if you're going to be onlining using DV, but don't want to go letterboxed 4:3.
I get the sense you're trying adjusting settings that don't need to be adjusted.
