SSH/Terminal/Command Prompt Question

Is there a way at school to ssh into mu computer using command prompt, copy the file i need to the desktop of the pc i am using? Is there any way to do that. I can do that GUI from a PC laptop to mac in the same house using login credinteals, but this is remote, any suggestions?

The GUI from a PC to your Mac would be TeamViewer.com
TeamViewer.com is free for personal use, and has both Mac and PC versions. The connections are secure, and TeamViewer.com includes file transfer capabilities.
For pay, you can do file transfer using LogMeIn.com. It has a free option for screen sharing, but file transfer requires a for pay option.
The ssh route. More work, but it can be effective.
With respect to ssh on the PC, you can use PuTTY, or a Cygwin.com environment (maybe others).
The fun part is configuring your home router so that port 22 is forwarded to your Mac, and getting a dynamic DNS name from No-IP.com or DynDNS.org so that you can easily.
PortForward.com has documents providing step-by-step guides on how to setup port forwarding for a huge list of routers
<http://portforward.com/>
Finally you will need to enable System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Login which allows ssh connections to your Mac.
Now you can use scp or sftp from a PC client to transfer files to/from your Mac. There are also PC sftp clients available for secure transfers via an ssh connection (but you still need to do all the configuration work on your home router and Mac).

  • Geek Question About Terminal Command Prompt

    Strange Question:
    On my wife's Mac (10.9.5) her Terminal command prompts end with "%" (no quotes). On my Mac (also 10.9.5) my Terminal command prompts end with "$" (no quotes).
    This was also the case under Mountain Lion. Neither one of us has ever edited or created a .bash_profile settings file.
    Why the difference?
    Thanks.

    Her default shell is tcsh. Yours is bash.

  • Using Java To Open Terminal/Command Prompt

    I wanted a .jar file to open the terminal/command prompt on execution so that i can use System.out to display all the information needed...Is this possible? If so what code can i use to open the command prompt from java
    Thanks a lot ppl ;)

    Terminal prompt is plataform dependent, I would not advise you to do that. If your system outs are logging, i sugest you to use any logging api. If you are trying to display text information to the user, open any text widget and output there.
    May the code be wiht you.

  • [Solved]SSH messed command prompt

    Hello,
    I try to describe what is my problem. [CURSOR] - is my cursor
    I connect to SSH. OK
    I type command. OK
    I can correct beginning of command. OK
    I execute command. OK
    $  echo 11111111111111111111111111
    $  echo 0000000000000000000000000
    I go to history - first command shows OK
    $  echo 0000000000000000000000000
    second history command when I try correct beginning(click home button or left arrow), I simply can't, I can access only 11-th letter of command.
    $  echo 11111[CURSOR]111111111111111111111
    now I go back to first history command
    $  echo 11111echo 000000000000000000000000[CURSOR]
    command prompt stay messed,  and command can be executed successfuly only if I dont touch it.
    I can go to beggining, but only 11th character
    $  echo 11111[CURSOR]echo 000000000000000000000000
    I press once more arrow down to get "live" clear command prompt.
    $  echo 11111[CURSOR]
    prompt stay messed, I cant delete string, only ctrl+c helps.
    I tried urxvt and xterm. Generally it will happen If I execute command which has more than 30 letters.

  • Command Prompt Questions

    Hi I have a question on command prompt coding, Can someone please tell me where can i find it?It would be great if you guys can move my below question to that location.
    Hi All,
    I have the following Copy Command which copies files from one location to another
    XCOPY D:\Test C:\Test /i
    Now i would like to have the files copied from D to C everyday based on the date for today, i googled around and found this one which is working fine
    XCOPY D:\Test C:\Test /D:01-19-2015.
    The thing here is i want the date to be automated as i would like to schedule a job for this one which would copy the files daily automated .
    Can someone please help me with this?
    PLease let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks

    I'd avoid ITCG. Bill and jrv will just tell the OP to post in the platform forum, as the question is about how to use a utility and not about scripting.
    Just my two cents.

    Hi Mike,
    That's sad, really, as your suggestion is a batch file, which I thought were welcome there.
    By the way, congratulations!

  • Command prompt question

    Hi,
    Is it possible to just start the command prompt in a certain directory. ie. my java programs are in the file C:\Java\myprograms. Can I start the command prompt so that its already in that folder?
    Thanks,
    Cam

    As long as you have set the PATH environment variable
    correctly, the operating system will be able to find
    and run an executable file (java.exe, javac.exe, etc)
    from any directory.
    If you need to set the PATH variable, read #5 of the
    Installation Instructions for the version of Java
    that you have installed.o yeah i know all that i just want to start command prompt in the folder where all my projects are stored so i dont have to type a bunch of commands to get to it. im not sure if its even possible but i just thought someone might know...

  • Built-in SSH Terminal question on how to save and exit

    Howdy, Heres my question and problem.
    I haven't been able to figure out how to save and exit the editor for the SSH terminal that the mac has. I've read that to save you press control -O hit return and to exit hit control -X but that doesn't seem to be working.
    I'm trying to install imagemagick onto my web server and I get stuck at that point of saving and then exiting.
    can anyone tell me how to save and exit the editor?
    I hold down control press -O i let go of the buttons then i press control -X and it stays at the same editor like nothing happened. I try quitting the terminal and reloading it all but that just causes me to restart and nothing saved. and I actually hit the "-" key should i do that or no?
    heres the instructions I'm following for the imagemagick install.
    (For this next part, if you don't have "pico", you can use "vi" instead)
    $ cd libtiff-lzw-compression-kit
    $ pico Makefile
    change
    TIFFSRCDIR = /tmp/libtiff
    to
    TIFFSRCDIR = ../tiff-v3.5.5
    Then save and exit the Editor $ make install
    $ cd ..
    $ cd tiff-v3.5.5
    $ ./configure
    thanks for any help
    -Ahufs

    ctrl+x (thats both keys at the same time) will invoke the exit of the program. at wich point if youve made changes to the file it will ask you if you want to save the data or not. If yes you need to type yes or y and hit enter... if no then no or n. Then it will ask you what you want the file name to be with the default being whatever the file was that you opend to buffer to work on so in most cases you hit enter again.
    hitting ctrl+o (thats both at the same time again) should write the file out and close the application without prompting i think (i dunno for sure... i always use ctrl+x myself).
    At least thats on the OS X version of pico... your server is probably linux so it may differ although i wouldnt expect it to. my pico bindings have always been the same from Debian to CentOS to Darwin.
    Also i msut ask... why cant you pass the TIFFSRCDIR as an option to ./configure like normal instead of manually editing the make file?

  • Adter adding new ztv10 W 300 ZTE Router command prompt changed

    I just installed my new ZTE Router (ethernet+wifi) model ztv10 w300 and got it working even though I seem to be having a few ip address conflicts. The question I have now is why do I see local0026bb05005b:~ jasper$ when I open a command prompt now instead of Jaspers-MacBook-Pro.local:~ jasper$ as before? Under sharing I still have Jaspers-MacBook-Pro.local, but no longer in the terminal. Why? Is this going to cause issues? How do I revert?

    The hostname can be changed dynamically by routers and other network devices through DHCP requests, which can have the hostname keep changing every time your IP address and other DHCP information is renewed. If this is the case, you may be able to set the router to never provide hostname information, or you can set the computer to never accept a hostname change. To do this, you will need to add a line to the computer's hostconfig file using the following procedure:
    Open the Terminal
    Enter the following command:
    sudo pico /etc/hostconfig
    Authenticate, scroll to the bottom of the file, and add the following line:
    HOSTNAME=MacBook
    (Change "MacBook" to your desired hostname--no spaces)
    Save the file and quit by pressing control-X, confirming the save with the "Y" key followed by "enter".
    After this has been added to the file, the computer's hostname should not change even when you renew your DHCP lease.
    Cheers

  • Old IP address showing at command prompt

    I setup OS X server 10.4 using a static IP address. Recently I changed the IP address. Name Server in the Network configuration is correct. DNS also is running correctly. But when I login to the server using SSH, at the command prompt, I still see the old static IP address. I don't recollect the file name where the initial static IP address is stored. What is the file, where is it ?

    In Terminal.app do:
    sudo changeip /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 <oldip> <newIP> <oldhostname> <newhostname>
    Then open the 'Sharing' system prefpane and change the name to the FQDN of the machine. Then click the 'Edit' button. The name should automatically change to <hostname>.local. If it doesn't, change it to, <hostname>.local. Close the prefpane. Open Terminal.app, the name at the prompt should now be, by the default shell config, the new host name -it could be something else if you have changed the prompt in your shell profile.

  • Running Terminal Commands at Login

    Hi everyone!
    Just a quick question for anyone who may know the answer. I am trying to automatically run two terminal commands at login:
    sudo pmset -a halfdim 0
    sudo pmset -a halfdim 1
    I have absolutely no idea what I am doing, so if someone knows and can help me out, that would be great! Thanks a lot!
    ~ Philip

    Trying to make the screen wink at you when you login?
    You could install Platypus and create a little shell script with it and put it in your Login items. The script would be something like
    <pre class=command>sleep 30; sudo pmset -a halfdim 0; sleep 0.2; sudo pmset -a halfdim 1</pre>
    Those sleeps should be tweaked for the best effect. If sudo prompts you for a password, then it won't work.

    Are there any Unix / Terminal commands I can use to reset these?

  • How can I change the "Ask to join new networks" option using a terminal command?

    We are currently switching to a new wireless network throughout our school district and I have pushed commands to connect to the new and remove the old. However, any Macs that have "Ask to join new networks" enabled are jumping over to our unsecure guest network, even if that network has been removed from the list of Preferred Networks. So far the fix has been to remove the guest network from the list of Preferred Networks and then disable Ask to join. The only issue I'm running into now is I have been unable to find a terminal command to change this setting. Once I have the command I can write a script and send that out to all of the Macs.
    So is there a way to disable "Ask to join new networks" using command line?

    sed -i "" 's/Prompt/DoNothing/' /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

  • How to print pdf file in SQL Server Reporting services report using command prompt?

    Is there a way to automatically print a SQL Server Reporting services report on command prompt? For eg: We can save a pdf file using rs.exe utility. I want to print a pdf using rs.exe utility. Is it possible? I don't want to install any 3rd party software.

    Thanks Simon for replying to my question.
    In oracle form, there is oracle command to print the report from command prompt with the help of rwrun.exe
    e.g: rwrun.exe   REPORT="D:\Test\REP_25\MLA.REP" DESNAME="testprinter" DESTYPE="PRINTER" P_FORMNAME="MLA.FMX" P_SPRACHE="E" P_SPRACHE_NR2="1" P_WHERE_BEDINGUNG="order by land_nr" USERID="test/test.world" PSV_NAME="PSV_DEMO" PSV_JOB_ID="PS$9583" RECURSIVE_LOAD="NO"
    BATCH="YES" NONBLOCKSQL="NO" ARRAYSIZE="1" PARAMFORM="NO" ERRFILE="c:\temp\psv16.tmp"<
    and to save the report we just need to change DESNAME="c:\temp\OC_100001349.pdf" DESTYPE="FILE" in above command instead of DESNAME="testprinter" DESTYPE="PRINTER".
    DESNAME and DESTYPE are the input parameters of the respective report.
    In SSRS, we can run the file from the command prompt and save it.
    rs -i "C:\Users\pujarswa\Documents\reports\new\LoadReport.rss" -s ww2004760:80/ReportServer_MSSQL -v fileName="C:\Users\pujarswa\Desktop\TipsReportLoad.pdf"
    -v reportPath="/TipsReport/LoadListTabular" -t -v format="PDF" -v LandNr=4 -u ap\swati -p test@# -e Exec2005
    But we cannot use same command for printing as you said we need to create another script for printing files.
    I have gone through the links but I dont want to use Adobe Acrobat Reader exe for printing because client it may not have Adobe Acrobat Reader on their machine.
    Also I want to pass a input parameter as type="Printer" to my report which will print directly for me and same I can acheive in command prompt passing type="Printer" fileName="C:\Users\pujarswa\Desktop\TipsReportLoad.pdf"
