Stacking of macro images?

Could someone explain which piece of Photoshop software is most suitable for stacking closeup images of the same subject over large depth of field so that I can achieve a crisp image of the subject by Blending??
Also,  can I upgrade to this software from Photoshop elements 7?
Thankyou for your help

Photoshop Elements has no built-in 'Focus stacking' feature, but you can read this and find if that can help you:

  • Labeling all images in a stack; when all images are stacked

    A long time ago, when I was using Photoshop Elelments I found a plug-in that made it possible to work with stacks as a unit.
    If I labeled the top image in the stack that lable was applied to all the images in the stack; then I could sort the the image on top and all the images in the stack would stay together, or if I deleted an image in the stack all the images in the stack were deleted.  Without it I have open each stack I lable and apply the lable, so when I sort the stacked images they stay together.
    I don't remember where I found that plug-in and I'm sure it would work in Photoshop.  Anyone else use it and know where I can find it?

    I do not use Lightroom when you wrote "Stack" in Photoshop that refers to the layer stack.  The link you posted seems to be more about paring files.  I do not know much about lightroom except it organizes your images using logical databases. Lightroom calls this its Library system.  I know the book libraries have book stacks so it would surprise me that Lightroom had some type of stacks.  You started by stating when you used PSE you used something to manage stacks.  I thought now the you are using PS you needed something for it.  This thread most likely belongs in the Lightroom forum.

  • Auto-stack bracketed raw images?

    When I execute the auto-stack panorama / HDR command on a directory filled with exposure bracket groups intended for HDR processing, Bridge issues a warning message "Image is missing preview data" apparently for each and every image it inspects.  If I click through however many warning messages come up, eventually, the command properly stacks the raw images.
    I actually tried the build and export cache feature, exporting  a cache directly to the directory of raw images I wanted to stack.  That did not help.  Still get the same warning message over and over again.
    Can anyone help me with this issue?

    I actually tried the build and export cache feature, exporting  a cache directly to the directory of raw images I wanted to stack.  That did not help.  Still get the same warning message over and over again.
    Never used this before (I always first sort and rate my files manually) but tried it on a folder and first time had two of those messages (but there where a few other files- already fused using Photomatix- and some layered etc etc. that might have caused that). Then I tried it with a bunch of HDR and Panorama  files (already saved as tiff for use in Photomatix BTW) that I placed in a new folder. Now the result was better but to be honest not completely flawless, it left out 1 file out of 4 stacks from total 22 files.
    Then tried again on the folder before and this time no error messages but also a pretty lousy result I'm afraid. Some clearly 1 stop difference series of 6 shots divided in 2 stacks so I stick with my manual method
    However it might be a cache related problem for you. If you have one folder for testing first try a purge cache for folder using the menu tool / cache / purge cache for folder and try again

  • Import to Album Question-Problem with stacking in import images dialog

    In trying to group images by creating albums when importing, I ran into an issue. If I used the timeline in the import dialog to create stacks, only the top photo from the stack made it into the album. In other words, if I grouped 100 images into ten stacks, only ten pictures appeared in the album?
    Is Aperture supposed to work this way? Or is it a bug?

    Could you list the steps you are going through in detail?
    I just tried stacking some images in the import window (from the HD not a card) and they came into the album as closed stacks containing all the images. Doesn't stop it being a bug on your installation, of course, just that it doesn't reproduce on my machine.

  • Auto stack based on image similarity

    Can you implement this in Lightroom 3 please?  Copy the implementation in Elements 8.  Having similar looking images stacked together would be extremely useful.

    The same thing has been reported for the T410. You can see how to fix it here:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T410-unstable-screen-brightness/m-p/212492#...
    It appears to occur anytime you are on battery and the intel graphics power plan is set to anything other than 'maximum performance.' It's pretty subtle, but really annoying when it happens.

  • Stacks - controlling top image - PSE4

    I've never used Stacks very much because it seemed a function that had a mind of it's own when choosing what the top image was going to be.
    However, today it all clicked into place - so to speak.
    You can control which image you want as the top one after you've selected all the images for the stack by right clicking on it and choosing Stack from the menu. Which ever one you right click on becomes the top.
    Maybe you already new this but I didn't :-)

  • PS CS6 align/blend errors

    Doing macro "stacks" in CS6 using "load images as layers to PS", then align and blend process.  Images of white flowers on black background turn out garrish/blownout/OOF.  All other image stacks are working fine (of colored subjects).  But white on black are blowing out.  Any suggestions?

    I do "stacks" of macro images, take up to 30 images of a flower focusing at different parts of the flower in each, to get an image that is fully sharp.  I load them all into lightroom first, and then "edit in PS, load images as layers."
    When all images are in CS6, I highlight all the layers to be included in the blend/align process.  I click "edit align" and then "edit blend", and wait while PS blends all of those layers together.  The resulting image will be a blend of all the sharpest points of each layer, thus a fully sharp macro image/
    Have been doing this for 3 years in PS and never had any problems.  Suddenly when I was doing a stack of 25 images of white tulips against a black background, the resulting blended image was totally blown out white, OOF, like a huge splat of white on a black and slightly greenish background.  The images did not blend properly.
    I've done many tests of stacks using color images over the past few days, meaning NOT white subjects on black backgrounds, and they work fine.  It is specifically a white object against a black background stack that is not working.  It doesn't matter whether I try to stack 3 images or 30 images, it does not work.
    There is something wrong in the blend part of the process, of specifically images of white objects on black, that isn't working.

  • Automatic image stacking in Bridge CC by filename.

    Hi,
    I work at a CGI Studio and we use Bridge to acess and manage our library of textures etc.
    Now textures usually consist of several seperate image files, let's say three (_DIFFUSE, _BUMP, _SPECULAR)
    The filename of these three files, say they're from a wood material, would always be like "Wood-"+counter+"_DIFFUSE", example: "Wood-003_DIFFUSE.jpg", "Wood-003_BUMP.jpg" and "Wood-003_SPECULAR.jpg"
    Now I manually grouped the three seperate image files together so I have a stack of three. The thing is we got hundreds of those 3-file-images.
    Basically I need a way to automatically stack all the images which have the same beginning/pattern
    Related: I did this once manually but for some reason Bridge messed up after a few days and got them all half-*** together and jumbled them around resulting in all files still being there but not properly stacked anymore...
    Now I know my way around proprietary scripting languages and am familiar with stuff in general. Do I need to do scripting here or is there a better way to do so?
    How would I start? Where? Has anyone links to a solution for this (I think common) problem?

    Here is one solution.
    #target bridge
       if( BridgeTalk.appName == "bridge" ) {
    woodStack = MenuElement.create("command", "Wood Stack", "at the end of submenu/Stack");
    woodStack.onSelect = function () {
    var fileList = Folder(app.document.presentationPath).getFiles("*diffuse*");
    for(var a in fileList){
        var firstFile = decodeURI(fileList[a].name.match(/[^_]*/));
        var filesToStack = Folder(app.document.presentationPath).getFiles("*"+firstFile+"*");
        if(filesToStack.length == 3) {
            app.document.deselectAll();
            for(var s in filesToStack){
            app.document.select(new Thumbnail(filesToStack[s]));
        app.document.chooseMenuItem("StackGroup");
    Copy and paste the script into ExtendScript Toolkit or a PLAIN TEXT editor.
    Then save it out as filename.jsx
    The correct folder to save the script can be found by opening Bridge, going to the preferences - Startup Scripts and clicking on the "Reveal my startup scripts" button.
    Once saved close and re-start Bridge.
    To use, selected the folder you want to stack the groups of files and select Stacks - Wood Stack

  • Sorting of images within a stack

    When working with stacks some strange things happen:
    - When trying to duplicate one image out of the stack into an album the whole stack is moved to the album. When I than delete this stack in the album the order of the images of the same stack in my projects is changed.
    - When rejecting images within a stack my rejected images are not automatically moved to the rejected images folder. Instead these images stay in the stack even so they are marked as rejected.
    - When sorting images within a stack by using different ratings and than trying to limit the image view by showing for instance only images with 3 stars or more nothing happens. Also showing rejected images only does not work within a stack. Instead showing images by rating is applied to the whole project and not only the stack
    Do I do something wrong or is this a known apperture bug?
    MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    David, your understanding (use) of stacks is causing a conflict. The whole idea is basically to group a series of similar images and choose the best one of that series, called the Pick. Then, within that series you can rank those images in an order of Pick to next best, and so on. You can view stacks open or closed - when closed, the Pick is the one on top.
    Here's some info from the Help Menu that will help answer your questions:
    Note: When you place a stack in a book album or web gallery or web journal album, Aperture displays the stack pick. If you drag a stacked image that is not the stack pick into the book or web gallery or web journal album, Aperture reminds you to select the stack pick. If you don’t want to place the pick in the album, but want to use a different version from within the stack, select the version you want and then make it the album pick by choosing Stacks > Set Album Pick.
    Dragging Stacks
    You can drag an entire stack to a new location, and you can drag specific images within a stack to a new location. When a stack is closed, dragging the stack moves the entire stack. When a stack is open, you can drag individual versions to new locations in the Browser. You can also drag images into a stack. If you drag a stacked image into a different project, however, the entire stack moves to the new location.
    If you still want to be able to use a stacked image as you have stated, then take that image out of the stack, split the stack, or create a version of the image and remove it from the stack.
    Take a quick refresher through the help menu - it will give you some further details and ideas so you can accomplish exactly what you need to do.
    Hope that helps!!

  • AppleScript Bug: Duplicating stacked images to albums

    for anyone else using AppleScript, I encountered this bug a couple of nights ago. I've reported it to Apple.
    14-Feb-2009 02:14 AM Gregory Charles Rivers:
    Summary:
    The Aperture/AppleScript "Duplicate" command when used to add stacked images to albums does not work as expected.
    (1) when stacked images are successfully added to the target album, they are added as masters rather than simple album items.
    (2) if the source project is not selected in the Inspector, stacked images will not be added to the target album.
    (3) "Duplicate" is not a suitable command for adding objects to albums and confuses scriptors. an additional "Add" or "Assign" command should be created expressly for this purpose.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    * begin of steps to reproduce *
    PROBLEM #1
    1. [APERTURE] import 3 masters into a new project called "Gregory"
    2. [SCRIPT] in a script editor, get the new project's ID:
    id of every project whose name is "Gregory"
    -> "UkRHKvb/RfmZ8H+Jn/pxRA"
    3. [SCRIPT] get a list of the images in the new project:
    every image version of project id "UkRHKvb/RfmZ8H+Jn/pxRA"
    -> a list of 3 objects
    4. [APERTURE] create two albums within the project:
    -> "Album 1" and "Album 2"
    5. [APERTURE] stack the first two images.
    6. [SCRIPT] add only the first image to "Album 1"
    copy every image version of project id "UkRHKvb/RfmZ8H+Jn/pxRA" to theImages
    duplicate theImages's first item to album "Album 1" of project id "UkRHKvb/RfmZ8H+Jn/pxRA"
    -> the stack that image 1 is a member of, is added to the album, but it's not a normal 'linked' album item.
    7. [APERTURE] delete the image from "Album 1" by selecting the image and pressing "Delete" on the keyboard.
    -> a warning is sounded but nothing happens. with normal album images, they're simply removed from the album.
    -> "Remove from album" is greyed out in the Images menu.
    8. [APERTURE] select the first image of the stack within the album and press Command-Delete.
    -> a dialog is presented confirming that the images inside the album are masters.
    confirm.
    -> the image is removed from the album, and from the project!
    9. [APERTURE] select the remaining image and press Delete.
    -> the image is removed from the album without affecting the master as would normally be expected.
    (the work-around for removing 'masters' from the album is to unstack them after which they become 'normal' album items again.)
    PROBLEM #2
    10. [APERTURE] import the first master again, back into the same "Gregory" project.
    -> we now have 3 masters in the project.
    11. [APERTURE] stack the first two images.
    12. [APERTURE] within project "Gregory", select "Album 2".
    13. [SCRIPT] add all 3 images to "Album 1" (while "Album 2" is still selected within Aperture).
    copy every image version of project id "UkRHKvb/RfmZ8H+Jn/pxRA" to theImages
    repeat with i in theImages
    duplicate i to album "Album 1" of project id "UkRHKvb/RfmZ8H+Jn/pxRA"
    end repeat
    -> only the unstacked image is added to the album.
    14. [APERTURE] select the project "Gregory".
    15. [SCRIPT] run the script again.
    copy every image version of project id "UkRHKvb/RfmZ8H+Jn/pxRA" to theImages
    repeat with i in theImages
    duplicate i to album "Album 1" of subfolder "nested" of project id "UkRHKvb/RfmZ8H+Jn/pxRA"
    end repeat
    -> all of the images are added to the album.
    -> the stacked images are still 'masters' rather than simply album items.
    PROBLEM #3
    the "Duplicate" command should be used for adding images as links to objects such as albums. the use of the "Duplicate" term for this action leads to confusion. an additional "Add" or "Assign" command should be created for this specific purpose.
    * end of steps to reproduce *
    Expected Results:
    whether stacked or not, images added to albums should be simple linked items, not masters, and which when deleted by pressing Delete simply disappear from the album without affecting the true masters.
    Actual Results:
    (1) stacked images added to albums are added as masters instead of linked items.
    (2) stacked images cannot be added to albums if their containing projects are not selected in the Projects inspector.
    (3) the use of the term "Duplicate" when applied to adding items to albums is confusing because the images aren't actually duplicated.
    Regression:
    Unstack all images before running any script that adds stacked images to albums.

    I have noticed behavior with drag-and-drop working anomalously different for me than as reported by others. It has not yet been problematic, but definitely anomalous.
    It sounds like the Aperture team should forget features improvements for a while and focus on stability.

  • How to swipe stacked images ?

    Hi,
    I am just starting with iAd producer and I would like to build a widget for Ibooks Author.
    The idea is to stack 80 anatomical images (what I did with multiview object) and then allow the user to scroll through those images.
    By default, I can scroll images by clicking but it is not really user-friendly since they need to click 80 times to see the full volume.
    Is there a way to scroll images when the user swipe the finger down/up (a bit like in the carousel view but without animation between two images) ?
    An alternative would be to set a slider bar, but then the problem is that it is not scrolling in real time (the image is no displayed until the finger is still on the screen).
    Your help would be much appreciated !

  • Filter by Stacked Images

    It would be great to be able to Filter Grid View to show only Stacked Images.
    My work flow is to first stack all similar images in a new folder, then go back to these to decide on which image is best etc for ranking & processing.
    Would be great to be able to filter the view to just show the stacked images.
    At the moment I purple colour code the images in stacks and then filter by colour.
    Cheers
    Chris

    One work around would be to assign a label color or star rating not used for anything else to all images in the stacks and filter for them. Of course you could not then use one or the other for other purposes but then you would still have pick flags and the other for regular use.

  • O.T.  Image Stacker

    Shareware but free trial. Windows only.
    Image Stacker combines multiple images into a single image. It can be used to overcome one of the last remaining limitations of digital cameras compared to their film counterparts: their inability to take very long exposures. Image Stacker can also be used to reduce the appearance of "digital noise" in images created by digital cameras or scanners, and create "synthesized long-exposures" without overexposure.

    Malcolm....
    I came across this a while back but somehow I just can't seem to take Microsoft seriously when it comes to Digital Imaging - sure they'd like to rule the world but they're coming from behind.
    In my opinion the market in Digital Cameras is going to peak soon and these are the major drivers behind Microsofts playing in the Digital Imaging world. So which camera maker is going to introduce a new format and convince people to buy it when it doesn't do anything better than the one they already have.

  • LR5- Unable to Stack Images

    Is there a reason, when working in the Library module, that I would not be able to stack? Have images in a Smart Collection that is built based on keywords and lack of "rejection". When I highlight a group of images and attempt to Stack, the all of the options are greyed out.
    Not at all new to LR, have been using since ver 1.0
    Have never used stacking before, just recently read about a way it might help my workflow
    Using LR 5.3

    Grrrrrr........  I was afraid that was the case, which is why I mentioned the SC. Was really hoping you would have a different answer.
    To make matters worse, if I do stack the images in an "allowed" area, the stack is not respected in the SC even though all of the images in the stack are present. Looks like I have to choose as to which is more useful for me, Smart Collections or Stacking. Clearly I can't have my cake and eat it too.

  • Using focus stacker software and PSE10

    I am contemplating Zerene Stacker for macro photography focus stacking and wonder whether it presents any difficulties with Organiser.
    My understanding is that the work flow process would first use PSE Editor to produce JPG or TIFF files, then use ZE for stacking to achieve a broad DOF effect and out putting in TIFF format.
    I assume I could then import this output to organiser using the File> Get photos and videos> from folders, command.
    Appreciate any comments and advice welcome.
    Regards,

    Update to this discussion.
    I have tried the software and proposed work flow and imported the result to PSE using Organiser. No problems. Since ZS requires tiff files for input I did use PSE Editor for conversion from RAW (but also note it might be easier to use the Canon DPP package to batch process them). I have a Canon 60D camera.
    ZS does produce some interim output files, which you would not want in PSE anyway I expect. Importing the end result is as easy as...
    Some files are quite large as you would expect given the number of images that might be stacked.
    I have then used PSE to convert the final output file to psd format for minor adjustments and then create a jpg version for sharing.
    So interacting with PSE appears to be quite OK.
