Standby from 11.2.0.2 --- 11.2.0.4

Primary ---- Windows2008 64bit, 11.2.0.2
Physical Standby ---- Windows2012 64bit 11.2.0.4.
Can we set-up a standby between these 2 boxes?
If not possible what is the best way to clone a database from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.4.
Appreciate your help on this.
Thanks,
Hari

Hi,
No you can't. The compatible parameter must be same all sides
Can we set-up a standby between these 2 boxes?
You should install 11.2.0.2 on standby side, or upgrade primary to 11.2.0.4
If not possible what is the best way to clone a database from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.4.

    First question.
Can primary and standby database have the same SID name?
As I recall it is yes.
I believe they must have different GLOBAL or DB_UNIQUE_NAME?
Anyway, RMAN I believe is telling me it is having problems copying control file on first and dies.

    Hi,
Permissions Issue on STANDBY machine?First problem I see is the sysdba password must be the same on both sides (target and auxiliary dbs).
    From the documentation.
The source database and auxiliary instances must use the same SYSDBA password, which means that both instances must have password files. You can
create the password file with a single password so you can start the auxiliary instance and enable the source database to connect to it.Check all prereqs for the standby db duplicate here.

  • Standby from active database

    Hello,
I am attempting to create a physical standby database, following this guide:
    http://www.oracle.com/global/uk/education/downloads/uwe_data_guard.pdf
as well as the oracle documentation on Data Guard. Using Oracle 11gR2 patched at #7 running on Windows Server 2008.
I've set all the parameters, created password files and checked connectivity. Hopefully correctly. I will post pfile exports at the end.
Here is where I hit a dead end.
    RMAN> connect target system/password@HPROD89
connected to target database : HPROD89 (DBID)
    RMAN> connect auxiliary sys/password@HPROD89STND
connected to auxiliary database: HPROD89STND (not mounted)
RMAN> duplicate target database for standby from active database;Error from spool. I need to spool the file to get the error code, otherwise the only thing rman provides is a "error message stack follows" message with nothing after that.
RMAN-03002: failure of Duplicate Db command at 11/19/2010 21:24:04
RMAN-06136: ORACLE error from auxiliary database: ORA-03114: not connected to ORACLEI'm running rman on the standby server with the database in NOMOUNT as the guide linked above suggests. This raises a simple question to start with: what server do I run rman on? The one with the primary database, or on the standby?
I hope it's just because it's getting late, but this issue has me confused .. rman clearly connects the auxiliary, but when trying to perform the actual duplication, it's not connected.
    Thanks for input.
    Regards.

  • RMAN duplicate target database for standby from active fails to create newname for system tablespace/datafile

When executing 'duplicate target database for standby from active'  the system tablespace/datafile (datafile 1)  is not cloned.  All other datafiles clone successfully.  The RMAN process aborts with the following errors while attempting to clone the system tablespace/datafile.
    ORA-19558: error de-allocating device
ORA-19557: device error, device type: DISK, device name:
ORA-17627: ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
ORA-17627: ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
    ORA-03135: connection lost contact
    Here are the details:
Primary is 11.2.0.2 RAC database  on an Exadata platform
Standby is 11.2.0.2 Single Instance database (same patch level as primary) on a Red Hat Linux box
This is an ASM to ASM duplication.
This is not unique to this database.  We tried another database and go the same behavior - all datafiles clone successfully with the exception of the system tablespace/datafile.
We have traced the RMAN execution and it seems to fail when it is trying to assign a NEWNAME to the system tablespace/datafile.
We even issued an explicit SET NEWNAME command but RMAN ignored it.
We also shutdown the primary and started is up in mount mode thinking that something had ahold of the System Tablespace/datafile.
We also opened up the network firewall to allow permit any,any traffic.
    We increased the max_server_processes
and added TCP.NODELAY=yes to the sqlnet.ora file.
There seems to be some artifact present in our Primary System tablespace/data file that is preventing it form being cloned.
checked all alert files grid, asm,  and dbhome - no abnormal messages.
We are in the process of restoring the database from a backup but we would prefer to get this working using the 'Active Database' methodology

I successfully created the standby database using RMAN backup and recovery.
I started the managed recovery.  Archive logs are being sent from the primary to the standby ( I can see them in ASM), but the standby is not applying them.
I get the following messages in the standby alert log...

  • How to restore standby from primary after failover.

HI we have a dr setup but the standby is provided archives through an application not the datagaurd.
So for applying application patch I cant switchover the database.
I have to shutdown the primary database and apply failover to the standby database to apply patch.
Can you please tell how can I restore my standby database to actual primary after failover.
As our actual activity will be in 2 weeks time. We want to apply patch on saturday.
DR DRILL is on 8th nov.

Your earlier statement "Can you please tell how can I restore my standby database to actual primary after failover"
means something different from "SO have to restore from cold backup of primary database"
What you seem to want is a procedure to recreate the Standby from a Backup of the Pirmary. (ie FROM Primary TO Standby).
You haven't specified your Oracle Version. DG has been available since 9i (was even backported to 8i) but I will presume that you are using 9i
You should follow the same process as used for the first creation of the standby, except that you don't have to repeat some of the setup steps (listener, tnsnames etc)

    Hi,
ORA-24544: Oracle RAC One Node instance is already running.
Cause: An instance startup failed because an instance of the Oracle RAC One Node database was already running on one of the cluster nodes.
Action: In Oracle RAC One Node, avoid any attempt to start a second instance by any means while the instance is already running.
I have never used One Node RAC, but it looks like RMAN trying to start an offline instance of current One Node RAC on Node B.

    Regards, Anirban

After your RESTORE the (standby) controlfile, you must MOUNT the database instance with "ALTER DATABASE MOUNT".
You can also then query the controlfile with a "LIST BACKUP" or "LIST BACKUP SUMMARY" in RMAN to see if the deseired backups have been cataloged in the controlfile.
Don't specify the format for the ALLOCATE CHANNEL when you RESTORE DATABASE. In fact, you don't need to ALLOCATE CHANNEL at all when the device type is the default value of DISK if your are on 10gR2 or above.

  • REcreate physical standby from New Primary

    It is not problem.
Online redo members of groups or group count, may be is different primary and standby databases.
If you want learn which member is which group, the try below script.
    select member, group# from v$logfile;
    {coide}
I think there have 2 member every log group.
Every standby redo log group heve only one member, It is recommended.

    Is it possible this scenario?
Create a physical standby from logical standby and the physical receive archive from logical.

  • Using RMAN to create single instance standby from 2 node rac

Any advice on the RMAN command to take a non catalog full rman backup from a two node 11gr2 rac node and use it to create the STANDBY single instance.
The RAC two node instance is in ASM (Linux)
The Physical Standby is Normal File System (Linux)
The command that I get from Metalink suggests:
    rman target sys/passwd@primary catalog RMAN/RMAN@RMAN auxiliary sys/passwd
    RMAN> run {
    allocate auxiliary channel C1 device type disk;
    duplicate target database for standby;
When I took the rman backup I did not use catalog. Please suggest how to accomplish the same task without catalog. Thanks

  • Creating logical standby from non primary backup

We want to test creation for logical standby in our test enviroment.
Here is the plan we are
    1. Backup Prod.
    2. Restore Test Primary (T1) and Restore test standby (T2) from Prod backup.
    3. Setup standby between T1 and T2.
Plan is to save the time for backup and restore process. I have not doe it before. Will this process work or T2 restore needs to be done from backup of T1 as that would be primary.

    Thanks Tobi.
I will try this. The test system is very large about 16TB and the backup/restore process takes days. I just wanted to be sure if the same backup would work for creating the primary and standby at the same time.
So in this case, I will just have to restore from backup and move forward with archivelogs. Will I have to use the control-file from Prod or from T1.
Use the control file from T1(test primary)
I would like to use the backup COPY.
    General steps to follow:
    1. restore T1 as the (test)primary DB.
    2. recover/apply the T1 using the redo log.
    3. restore T2 but do not apply redo to prevent it from divergence from T1. i mean, let T2 scn be behind T1 scn.
    4. following the general steps as it apply to you in preparing and creating primary and standby DB
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/create_ps.htm
    5. make sure T2 can receive and apply redo data from T1
6.covert T2 to logical standby DB

  • How to Refresh UAT Primary/standby from Production primary/standby

    Hi ,
We have the following setup :
    Primary/standby - Production
    Primary/Standby - UAT
I need to know the process on how to refresh the UAT primary/standby .
I'm thinking on the following lines :
1] If we have the export dump of production , can we go ahead and drop the schemas to be refreshed on both UAT Primary and UAT Standby UAT then perform the schema import on Primary UAT .
2] In case if I have to do a full refresh of UAT , do I need to rebuild the UAT environment from the proudction backups Ie,
    (i) Drop both the UAT primary and UAT standby database .
(ii) using the produciton backup built the UAT Primary . Take the UAT primary backup and build the UAT standby .
Appricaite if any one can provide some best practices to refresh UAT from Production.

That setup seems to be rare. We assume that the Standby Database is used for testing and have a feature for that called Snapshot Standby.
But in your scenario, you need to develop your own techniques for "refreshment of the UAT Primary".
An easy way (if your Primary is not too large): Throw away your UAT env each time the "Production Primary" changes and RMAN clone it to "UAT Primary" then.
Then RMAN duplicate "UAT Standby" again. Could be relatively easily scripted.
But again: Why not just create an ordinary Standby on your UAT hardware and use it for testing with Snapshot Standby feature? Much easier to maintain.
    Kind regards

  • Create logical standby from existing physical standby on 9i

I have physical standby database 9i running.
I want to try to convert the physical standby to logical standby. i follow the step by step in metalink document no. 748595.1
But I cannot do the 6th step:
    6. Issue command to switch physical standby to logical standby after changing db_name in pfile to logical standby name. Shutdown the standby database if mounted and mount the database again. In this configuration, logical standby database name is LGSTDBY.

I have tried to create pfile from spfile on stanby and change the db_name to lgstdby.
I started nomount using pfile. I still cannot run the command.
I tried to mount the standby database but error occured:

The document in metalink is for 10.2.0.4
Is it possible to do it at 9i??
