Start up freezing at Spotlight
I have two accounts on my computer, one goes past the sign-in window, spotlight icon comes up then completely freezes. The other user account opens fine, is this a recorded problem, and is there an easy fix. I have reinstalled Tiger a number of times only for the problem to recur eventually.
I don't know whether this is anything to do with Spotlight but any help would be appreciated.
If the Dock is present, but nothing is on the Spotlight side of the menu bar except Spotlight, then the likely cause is something is going wrong with SystemUIServer. The startup order of processes is Dock, SystemUIServer, Finder. You could try moving these files out of the problem account:
"/Users/accountname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist"
"/Users/accountname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.00039343 a1a8.plist"
The numbers will vary in ByHost plist file. It could be that Spotlight is having a problem with something you have in the menu bar in one account but not the other, which causes SystemUIServer to crash. You could try restarting in Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key when you hear the chime). Spotlight, SystemUIServer and number of menu extras do not get along well.

I am having real stability issues after installing Lion OS X 10.7.5 - my Macbook keeps freezing and Spotlight is forever repeatedly indexing - does anyone have any suggestions?
I'm having the same problem with a Mac Pro desktop and it started after I upgraded to 10.7.5 . Exact same issue , Crashes for no reason ( very little running - mail,browser) then reboots. Sometimes it does multiple reboots.
I hate to say it but it's tiumes like this that I envy the Microsoft's approach to updates, if it is bad (which is not unheard of) you can go into programs and remove the last update. It would be nice if Apple implemented this since their quality doesn't seem to be what it once was. -
HELP! Started as freezing and now won't start!
Just to start, I have a Satellite P500 (P500-ST6822 to be specific).

At first my laptop just started to freeze every so often. The last major change that happened was installing Bioshock 2, but I really doubt that is the cause of my problems. I do not pirate, torrent, download sketchy files. I build my own desktops, but when I have issues I can normally just blame myself and figured out what's wrong. Because this laptop was built by someone else, I'm at a bit of a loss.
When things were working, but still freezing, the freezing would even occur in Safe Mode. Now when I try to start it up, the lights come on as if it's working fine, but nothing shows up. It's not just that the display isn't working, otherwise it would make the Windows startup noise at some point after leaving it. On 3 occasions of trying to start it the computer beeped a couple times. 1 somewhat long beep and 2 quick ones.
Because nothing even shows up I'm doubting it being just a HDD issue (wish it was since I could just get a new one and be happy...), not an issue with Windows 7, or any driver issues.
I'm really at a loss here. My first instinct is to open it up and try to figure it out myself, but I can't do that without voiding the warranty on the whole system. So, what do I do? Can anyone help me figure it out?

i've jail break Iphone 3GS. i tried to restore setting (erasing all data and media) without connecting to computer/itunes. When it starts it freezes by showing apple logo only. what is the solution. please help me out. Here i don't have iphone service center too.
Although not illegal, Apple discourages a user from modifying the iPhone OS in any manner, including "jailbreaking". Apple feels so strongly about this that discussing methods to assist a user trying to either jailbreak or "unjailbreak" an iPhone are prohibited.

I keep chronological versions of my Concerts if I do any modifications, and multiple versions had the same problem: the loading bar (which starts with Feedback Control, then plug-ins) would freeze immediately; no beach ball, no nothing. I would have to force quit. I could load a blank template and that would work. Nothing had changed on my system, no new software, no new plug-ins. And, yes, I send reports of any major bugs to Apple.
The reason I was so frustrated this time was that I had been let down by my long-time relationship too many times in the past. I went so far as to buy a fast dedicated system for live performance only. Great cables, great I/O, great peripherals. But it has been like a weird relationship: one where your partner is the best in the world for the longest time and all is carefree bliss. Then, out of the blue, they do something gut wrenchingly bad. So, you think it must be your fault and you work on stuff. Maybe get some counseling, go to the gym, get some new clothes. A hairstyle. A faster car. Things are wonderful again! The relationship is working! Then, !wham! Out of the blue, you're let down again. Well, I am now at the point I am going to try some other relationships. Maybe they won't be smart or as pretty, but I need stability. If MS straightens up and I hear from others that she has changed and seems stable and predictable, I just may give her another try. Because deep down, I really do love her. -
I Have A iPod Touch and for the first week or so has been fine and then i suddenly started getting freezes when i tried to go into Music Photo's and Video's and it will highlight the chosen application but it wont load Please Help.
Well, it looks like you might have to do a restore.
You have to re-sync to load your music/video/pix but it might do the trick.
Do you know how to do it?
Attach the Touch and launch iTunes.
Select the Touch and hit the Restore button.

Mac Book Pro Starting to freeze... :0(

my MBP, early 2008 model, has started to freeze on start up. not sure why. any ideas?
i recently filled up the hard drive, so i have emptied 25Gbs, could that be affecting it? HDD is 160GB drive.
when i boot up, the keyboard and the mouse wont work so i have to sit and wait for it to "come back to me". it usually does, after a while. i notice the caps lock first, then i am able to use the mouse. very odd.
also the cd tries to eject randomly sometime. i haveread other posts saying there's sometimes does that as well.
i do have third party 4 GB memory in it, i have also read that can affect it also. how can i check?
you help is most definitely welcome as my MBP is my work horse and i need it badly...

I had made some changes to Firefox this morning, including changing the start-up page to Outlook. Now as soon as Firefox comes up and Outlook starts, it freezes. I cannot even get to the Firefox options to reset them.
To start Firefox up with a blank page with a blank page instead of your home page, you can type or paste the following in the "Run" dialog, or maybe in the charms bar search box (I haven't tested that):
firefox.exe "about:blank"
I'm not sure why Outlook.com -- which should redirect to the Live Mail login page if your previous session cookies have expired -- would freeze Firefox. -
Just re-installed fresh version of Vista ultimate to try and fix this problem. Whenever I click on a Movie or TV show to watch, it starts and freezes 6-8 secs into it. Itunes (not responding), but it seems the media is still playing but frozen. Any help is appreciated.
You're not alone. Many people have encountered problems with iTunes videos on Windows Vista when the videos are stored on SATA disks.
No solution yet, sorry. If you have any other type of storage devices available to you (IDE drives, networked storage, some people have even reported success with USB flash drives), putting the videos onto that other storage seems to work. -
pb has started to freeze on me. I'll click on something & the rainbow wheel will appear & stay. Can't go to 'force quit.'
Then, when I re-boot, if it doesn't start up I get the '?' & 'finder' icons flashing on a gray screen like the poster below.

Start the machine up from your latest OS X installer DVD, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu in the Installer application, select your hard drive in the left pane of Disk Utility, click the First Aid tab in the right pane, and check the SMART status near the bottom of the right pane. If it is shown as "Failing", you need to replace your hard drive. If it's shown as "Verified", click the Repair Disk button and wait for the repair process to be completed. It will take 5-10 minutes or longer. If anything is reported to have been fixed, run it repeatedly until the drive "appears OK" at the end of the run. Then restart normally and see how matters stand.
For a more thorough evaluation of the drive's SMART status and condition, download and run SMART Utility. (Note: you must have at least OS X 10.4.11 to run any version of it.) -
Since yesterday my iphone 4 has started to freeze intermittently when unlocking. When it happens nothing happens (left it for an hour last night) until I reset the phone, but it's done it 5 times today. Never had this prob before. Any thoughts?
I had the same problem (freezing iphone when trying to unlock) today.
1) I made a backup of my iphone using itunes.
2) Went to my service provider and made a sim swap. So, I think there was a problem with the nano simcard.

Hello, I have a MacBook Air, when I was watching a movie it started to freeze, so I turned off. But when I turn it on just the white screen appears nothing else. I looked on other websites, but the methods didn't help.

A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.

0 B Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press thereturn key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press returnthree times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Macbook Pro does not start or freezes
Hello,
A little background to the problem before I describe what is happening now.
I bought this MBP and it presented a problem now and then where it would freeze if I had a couple YouTube or video windows open. I would have to restart it and it would present a kernel panic:

After a couple of failed restarts, I would be able to to get to the login screen and after I had done a proper restart or shutdown, it would work fine.
I was told that the battery on this MBP was a bit faulty, so I ordered a new one. After I changed the battery, the problem disapearred. I think it was coincidence.
Fast forward to now. It froze. I can try and start it and after many attempts, it might get to login screen. I have restarted it, like I used to do before, but the problem keep coming back. It now freezes after a little while once I log in. So I cannot do anything with it. At times, the little indicator light in the front will shopw the MBP starting and inmediately shutting down again. If it starts, sometimes I will have a kernel problem, CPUPOWERMANAGEMENT and if it actually starts, it will freeze in less than a minute.
I have checked the RAM by installing the original one. It now has Corsair 2 x 8GB, but I tried with the original 2 x 2GB and I also tried a new one from a Mac Mini I bought which is also 2 x 2GB and the behavior is the same, which makes me believe it is not the RAM. I took out the HD and checked it in an external HD through the Mac Mini and the HD appears fine. In any case, I installed a new one with Maverick on, and the HD is recognized, since I have been able to log in, it still freezes.
I am unsure if it is the Logic Board or CPU or what. I just ran out of the warranty 1 week ago. The problem actually started before the warranty ended, but I though it had expired, when it really had not expired yet.
Anyone know what the culprit might be? I am trempted to call Support and see if they can honor warranty since it has only been 1 week from expiration. This is a Late 2011 17 Inch i7 MBP, I would expect a Laptop like this which is so expensive to last more than this... I have had it for about one year... Just bought 2 Mac Minis to be able to keep on working while I fix this, but my experience with this MBP has been atrocious...

Now it does not even start. Ever. Indicator light in front turns on and after 1 second or 2 it turns off.MBP is not turning on. When I connect the wall charger it turns on the fans and drives and makes them spin very fast, however no picture is shown and I do not have any control over the MBP. It does not seem like a video problem, I press the Caps Lock key and I do not see the liught coming on, so I do not suspect it being a video problem. -
When I watch any video on youtube, every video first starts with short freezes then freezes the Firefox 7.1 Browser window. I have to right click on the icon that shows the browser is open on the taskbar at the bottom of windows and then click on close& cancel to get it to start working again. Also, on any site, I am having problems with links & functions that suddenly stop working, site connections being dropped frequently for no reason, my Modem is stable & internet shows connected. On facebook when I click a button(photos) it doesn't work, in Amazon I click on "submit" and the button stops functioning, in yahoo mail I can click on a button to "send" mail and it won't work. I can open them in IE9 or Chrome but not in Firefox. I have tried disabling all plugins.I also have tried disabling all but flash and still the problems persist. I have uninstalled and reinstalled FF.
Command + R *should* take it to a recovery console. Command + Option + P + R resets the PRAM, but that doesn't sound like your fix.If all of your buttons are working fine on OSX side, I would ignore PRAM / NVRAM / SMC reset tricks, since these are tested as working fine.
I would say you should probably reinstall the drivers for bootcamp. I tried this with 5 in Windows 8 and it gives you an option to repair. The reason I say this is because the UI isn't showing up, which means that it's using another driver.
If this doesn't work, go into device manager and then roll back to your previous settings.
One more thing comes to mind. Do you ever use Parallels or VMWare to load your bootcamp partition? They have their own driver packages which can cause some unwanted behavior when using windows natively.
One last thing you can do is try to by-pass the GUI powerplan entirely. You can use the Powercfg command, which, as it happens, has instructions on how to forcefully set the brightness values. You probably won't be able to make it through these instructions since you will get an error at some point, but that will give us more diagnostic information.
