Startkde error...

Hi all,
I've installed Arch as a base install, then installed KDE 3.4.1.
For some reason "startkde" script from the cmd line give me these errors:
xsetroo: unable to open display
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
How do I solve this problem? And get KDE to start up automatically on system boot?
TIA

I ran "Xorg -configure" but it says unable to get the mouse... which is a USB optical Logitech wheel mouse!!!
I need to edit the xorg.conf file but not sure what to enter in there for mouse support...
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
/dev/mouse
Any comments on what to edit?
Monitor is:
iiyama 1024x768 H 57KHz & V 71.2Hz
install hwd.  Then run
hwd -x
That will create you a file called xorg.conf.hwd in /etc/X11
Rename that to xorg.conf and (hopefully) that's all you'll have to do to get a working xorg.conf.

    I'm trying to compile the firefox version 15 as both 16.0.1 and I always get the same error, which I think leaves me with no ram even though I have 8 gigs, i try it with 8 gigs of swap but does exactly the same, here are all the facts about this problem, the only thing I have not tried is to change the compiler version, what do you think? this is a clear linkage error where the system breaks down after running out of physical memory...

  • Cannot open display error MATE

    I installed MATE alongside XFCE but when I try to open MATE after I login at boot it just comes up with the error Cannot open display and it then exits?
    I used the command:
    exec mate-session
    to try and start MATE.
    Thanks
    Al.
    PS I've you need any more details about my system just ask.

    Thats what I added to ~/.xinitrc as per the wiki.
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    #Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    exec ck-launch-session mate-session
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice

  • : not foundnd//.xinitrc: line 9: exec: startkde

    starting KDE with kdm works perfect, however I'd prefer to start X in the 'Slackware tradition', without kdm, but with startx
    Unfortunately that causes the following problem:
    The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
    > Warning: Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols
    > Ignoring extra symbols
    Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
    : not foundnd//.xinitrc: line 9: exec: startkde
    FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1;
    fixing.
    Strangely enough, X shows up for a second, but throws me back to the console again
    hints:
    - /tmp is writable for the user
    - the .xinitrc is fine
    - root can startx kde
    - the user can start X with xterm
    I, of course, read lots of postings however none of them seem to suit to my specific problem.
    Thank you, guys.

    cat .xinitrc
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    # exec xtermdeclare -x
    # exec wmaker
    exec startkde
    # exec icewm
    # exec blackbox
    # exec fluxbox

  • KDE does no longer start - DBUS error - Awesome WM related problem

    Hi,
    so I somehow managed to screw my KDE. I can no longer log in as my standard user, when I enter my username & password into the login-manager, the start process ends with a Window showing 'Could not start D-Bus. Can you call qdbus?'. When I press ok, I land back in the log-in screen.
    The following is the content of ~/.xsession-errors:
    /usr/bin/startkde: line 22: /usr/share/config/kdm/kde4-config: No such file or directory
    Agent pid 2157
    startkde: Starting up...
    startkde: Could not start D-Bus. Can you call qdbus?
    and at the end of the /var/log/kdm.log:
    klauncher(2188) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have started the DBUS server.
    kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
    kdmgreet(2182)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize() D-Bus call failed: "Not connected to D-Bus server"
    kdmgreet(2182)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): No time zone information obtained from ktimezoned
    Strange thing is, Dbus is running, so that should not be the problem.
    So, I have asked around in the IRC channel, and was advised to move my .kde4 config, so that kde would create a new one. That did unfortunately nothing, the same problem persists. So then I created a new user for testing and voila, KDE starts under this user with the generated configs (even with the configs from the old user, though he wants to start everything as the old one and that causes problems).
    Now my question is, what could be causing the problems? Dbus is surely running, as I can log in as the new testing-user, it also shows up in the process list, when I am logged in. Unfortunately it does not start up when I try to log in as the old user, and hence I can't start KDE. I was told, I could just delete the old user and create a new one to solve this issue, but I would like to avoid that.
    Thanks in advance for any advice.
    EDIT: Apparently the problem is related to awesome, after installing awesome, KDE seems to break after awesome is installed for every present user on the system. See also post #4.

    What happens if you reboot after uninstalling awesome, instead of just log out/log in? Does kde work again then?
    Nope, did that immediately after KDE broke. Rebooted actually several times without awesome installed and it didn't help.
    berbae wrote:You didn't say how you launched awesome: from kdm or from console or other way?
    It is started from kdm.
    berbae wrote:Say also if you have the systemd kdm.service enabled.
    Cant tell you that right now, don't have the machine at work. Will check that later.
    berbae wrote:
    Look what processes are running (especially the dbus-daemon and xorg related processes):
    before any WM/DE is launched,
    when awesome is launched and running,
    when you log out from awesome,
    when you log in again, trying to launch kde
    Use tty2 to check for the processes, when you don't have a command prompt (ctrl-alt-F2).
    Only by searching you could find a clue for the possible cause of the problem; it will be the learning way.
    As far as I remember it, dbus-daemon is launched when the system boots up. When I log in as a new user (hence with working KDE) it automatically starts another dbus process for kde as the new user. If i try that as the old (broken KDE) user, no dbus is started (and hence the problem).
    berbae wrote:...Or take the easy way: just use a new user and don't install awesome again if you don't want to use it!
    That was already suggested by some people in irc. I would like to avoid that because of two reasons:
    first, I find this very unclean and ugly, I would like to fix the problem at its root
    and second, I am afraid, that I might break the permissions in my whole home directory and nothing works anymore.
    What I am currently suspecting is that when I install awesome (and probably also log in) it runs some script that configures dbus per-user and that breaks compatibility with KDE. Could you imagine something like that?

  • KDE starting but not showing (and more KDE errors)

    Hi!
    Yesterday I had a problem with an upgrade and I found the problem was libdbusmenu.
    The solution I foun on the internet was
    sudo pacman -Rdd libdbusmenu && sudo pacman -Syu
    so I did it
    The problem is that now, after rebooting I can't start KDE (or at least it doesn't appear):
    $ startkde
    KDE seems to be already running on this display.
    I can't start any KDE app, for example opening settings results in a window saying
    System Settings was unable to find any views, and hence has nothing to display.
    Also the keyboard layout has changed for example
    Everytime I run something in terminal related with pacman or yaourt I get this error:
    missing 'libdbusmenu' dependency for 'lightread'
    I've uninstalled lightread and the error does not appear any more but I'm still the same
    Tried rebooting and starting fallback but still the same
    Any solution?
    Working on 3.14.1-1-ARCH
    Any further information needed please, ask for it
    I would be very pleased if you could help me to solve this as I don't have any idea how to proceed.
    I tried installing again libdbusmenu from AUR but it doesn't exist now
    Thanks!

    Sometimes it can be a problem with user settings, to test it just create a new user, login with it and try to start KDE.
    It is few ways to start a desktop environment.
    I am using few desktop managers and using a command line to start them depends on which I want to use. I don't use a GUI login managers.
    For KDE you can try
    killall startkd
    killall X
    startx /usr/bin/startkde
    For my openbox for example
    # For a normal start
    startx /usr/bin/openbox-session
    # For a failsafe start
    startx /usr/bin/openbox
    Of course you can make aliases for them.
    I hope this might help.
    It seems we're getting closer to the problem.
    Starting with
    sudo startx /usr/bin/startkde
    makes KDE start correctly while starting with
    startx /usr/bin/startkde
    makes it start the wrong way.
    Could it be possibly be a configuration error right?
    This is the output of my ~/.xsession-errors if it could help:

  • [SOLVED] NetworkManager "not authorized to control networking" error

    I'm installing arch with XFCE on an eeepc-1005ha. My wired ethernet works fine, both with dhcpcd eth0 and the NetworkManager (which connects automatically on boot). I'm following the instructions from this link: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … nager#XFCE
    I installed the NetworkManager and the xfce notify package. From the configuration setting part of the linked page, I disabled my internet connections with these commands:
    ip link set down eth0
    ip link set down wlan0
    I added NetworkManager to the DAEMONS array, after dbus, per the instructions. I still get a "not authorized to control networking" error when I select a wireless network, so I followed the troubleshooting instructions. This is my .xinitrc file:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    exec startxfce4 --with-ck-launch
    #exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    The exec line that's not commented out comes from the XFCE configuration instructions. The troubleshooting instructions for NetworkManager say to add
    exec ck-launch-session wm
    to .xinitrc, where wm is whatever window manager I'm using. Should
    exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
    or
    exec dbus-launch ck-launch-session startxfce4
    work? Neither of those options, nor the commented exec line in .xinitrc work.
    Finally, I followed the NetworkManager troubleshooting instructions and added my user to the wheel group, using this command:
    gpasswd -a myusername wheel
    After a reboot, everything else still works (wired ethernet, xfce4, etc.) but the error upon connecting to wireless is still the same.
    Any ideas? My user (username: myusername) does have full sudo privileges for this hostname.

    Both my flatmate and I are having this problem too, I am using openbox with consolekit and he is using awesome, again with consolekit.
    We both use slim, me through inittab and he through the slim daemon.
    By the way, it used to work, and has for around a year until now.
    My outputs from ck-list-sessions:
    Session1:
    unix-user = '1000'
    realname = '(null)'
    seat = 'Seat1'

  • Xinitrc comes up with syntax error

    I was trying this setup for an xinitrc file:
    DEFAULT_SESSION=awesome
    case $1 in
    kde) exec startkde;;
    xfce4) exec startxfce4;;
    wmaker) exec wmaker;;
    blackbox) exec blackbox;;
    awesome) exec awesome;;
    openbox) exec openbox;;
    musca) exec musca;;
    wmii) exec wmii;;
    enlightenment) exec e16;;
    ratpoison) exec ratpoison;;
    etoile) exec etoile;;
    compiz) exec compiz;;
    ) exec $DEFAULT_SESSION
    *) exec $1;;
    esac
    Seems like it should work right? Well I guess Bash doesn't like the null case, and throws it out as a syntax error. Anyone know of a way around this?
    The reason I wanted to do this is because sometimes I'll just want to add a WM to /etc/slim.conf just to test it out.

    http://tldp.org/LDP/Bash-Beginners-Guid … 07_03.html
    Each case is an expression matching a pattern. The commands in the COMMAND-LIST for the first match are executed. The "|" symbol is used for separating multiple patterns, and the ")" operator terminates a pattern list. Each case plus its according commands are called a clause. Each clause must be terminated with ";;". Each case statement is ended with the esac statement.

    I am trying to to start it with
    /usr/bin/openbox
    I have also tried starting it from .xinitrc with
    exec openbox

    Could you be more specific about "look in your xorg log for warning/error messages"
    and here is my .xinitrc

  • After openoffice install: gnome/kde error "openssl version mismatch."

    Hello,
    i just installed a new archlinux version on my laptop. After i just installed the full cd version, i made the following things:
    pacman -Sy
    pacman -S xorg-server xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard xf86-video-vesa xorg-xinit
    pacman -S hwd
    hwd -xa
    pacman -S gnome
    pacman -S gnome-extra
    pacman -S openoffice-base openoffice-spell-en openoffice-spell-de
    Now, when i try to start gnome via "gdm", i get the following error after login screen:
    /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
    /etc/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- /usr/bin/gnome-session
    OpenSSL version mismatch. Built against 90805f, you have 908070
    Because i made nothing else on the system except the commands i quoted above, i guess it must be a bug. Has anyone an idea how to solve this problem?
    Thx in advance,
    Thomas

    Update:
    I just tried a new installation and did the same steps as above, just with kde instead of gnome.  After "startkde", the same OpenSSL version mismatch error appears on the console. It's REALLY annoying...

  • Kde error with klibdevx.so.4

    :oops: I've succesfully installed FreeX86 and it is working and I also installed kde 3.1.2 but when I try to run kde it make an error. The error says that it can't slocate klibdevx.so.4 and that it can't run kdeinit. Anyone know how to fix this error??? I'm a newbie and will appreciate ur help, thanks.

    Now I have a problem with libqt-mt.so.3. I run startkde and it show an error in the screen. Kreadconfig, Ksplash, Kdeinit, Ksmserver, Kdeconfig.
    The error look like:
    kreadconfig: error while loading shared libraries: libqt-mt.so.3: can not open shared object file: No such file or directory
    ksplash: error while loading shared libraries: libqt-mt.so.3: can not open shared object file: No such file or directory
    kdeinit: error while loading shared libraries: libqt-mt.so.3: can not open shared object file: No such file or directory
    ksmserver: error while loading shared libraries: libqt-mt.so.3: can not open shared object file: No such file or directory
    startkde: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation
    kdeconfig: error while loading shared libraries: libqt-mt.so.3: can not open shared object file: No such file or directory
    How can I fix this? I was thinking that maybe there are some missing files in the Full Arch installation Cd. So I download a newer version of kde including tha arts, kdelibs and kdebase files. I also download a newer version of qt. I download the source files the ones that ends in .tar.bz2. So I unpacked them and when I run ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde
    I get the following error:
    configure:error:C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check.
    What can I do to fix this. Is it easier to install them this way than fixing the problem with my startkde problem. I will appreciate your help, I want to have kde running.

  • Gnome Errors ad startup and mouse arrow hungs

    Today I've updated all the system using pacman -Syu
    then I've installed ALSA
    pacman -Sy alsa-lib alsa-utils
    pacman -S alsa-oss
    pacman -S alsa-plugins
    setting the alsa deamon on startup on /etc/rc.conf file
    now when I start Gnome with xinit, I get all the errors below (actually some of them where also before) and the mouse is not recognized anymore, so I cannot move the mouse pointer.
    I've looked around but I didn't find any good info about fix them

  • Huge errors.log daemons.log and everything.log [SOLVED]

    Ok people i have i big problem since my last update, wich happened yesterday.
    errors.log, daemons.log and everything.log are extremly huge over 1.3G per file.
    I tried this to make them smaller with this:
    >errors.log
    >daemons.log
    >everything.log
    and this helps for about 5 mins, but after that 5 mins, those three files are growing large again.
    logrotate is in my /etc/cron.daily. Should i put it in /etc/cron.hourly. Is this gonna help me with my problem or is it something else that causes it.
    This is the message that is written over and over in errors.log:
    Jul  6 13:06:44 myhost famd[2151]: fd 4 message length 1347375956 bytes exceeds max of 4136.
    This one is from daemon.log:
    Jul  6 13:08:09 myhost famd[2151]: fd 4 message length 1347375956 bytes exceeds max of 4136.
    And this one is fron everything.log:
    Jul  6 13:09:03 myhost famd[2151]: fd 4 message length 1347375956 bytes exceeds max of 4136.
    As you can see this is the same message in all three files.

    I've just installed Photoshop CS2, however upon opening Adobe Bridge this error message appears " The application has failed to start because libagluc28.dll was not found. Reinstalling to application may fix the problem"
    I have reinstalled and click repair but to no avail
    I followed Adobe Support Knowledgebase solution and run CMD and this appears:

    but an error message appears - 'cacls' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or bathc file
    I also entered the next command
    cacls "c:\documents and setting\all users" /Y /E /C /G administrators:F
    still the same error as above appears, Please help, have I miss something or was my procedure correct...

  • Windows Vista: Ipod Error Message, no longer read by PCs

    Hello,
    I have a 5th generation black ipod video with 30GB of memory.
    The other day I hooked it up to my laptop (Toshiba, 4 months old) that it's been functioning on with no problems whatsoever. This weird error message flashed twice about it not being able to sync because of some software problem.
    Eversince then, the only thing I can charge my ipod on is the family treadmill in the basement (~_~) as no other computer in the house recognizes it. I can't even charge it through the wall sockets, either.
    I have changed the ipod cord, still no luck. I've also reset the device about 3 or 4 times and uninstalled, restarted the laptop then reinstalled itunes. I would like to reset it back to factory settings but that's impossible as computers/laptops don't pick it up. I live very far from a Mac store...
    What's a girl to do? I can't live without my Busta Rhymes and Wu-Tang Clan!
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
