Startup - To RAID or not to RAID?

I have read several things on this forum about RAIDs. There is some concensus that using a RAID for the startup disk is a bad idea, but I'm not sure why. A friend of mine has a dual G5 with a RAID for the startup, and he thinks it's great.
Can anyone point me to numbers that show performance improvents gained by using a RAID? I'm running a Dual G4 1 GHz Quicksilver, which has a 133 MHz system bus. I assume the ATA controller is on the PCI bus. Is that running at 133 MHz as well? If the bus is much faster than the disk, which I am sure it is, then RAID would help.
I do some editing of AIFF audio files using Sound Studio, and I will also set up an external SCSI RAID to use as a scratch disk. From my experience with large files using a single disk, I think it would be worth the effort to gain some speed.

Russ, thanks for your reply. It's unclear how joining clip fragments together with Streamclip would be any different than joining the clip fragments together in a new compound clip.?

There appear to be no timecode breaks in the tapes. The duration of some of the shots is several minutes and when I watch the timecode display on the decks or on the camcorder, it appears to run smoothly. So any timecode break must be a millisecond or two. And for some reason, QuickTime gives an error message when I try to set up a new movie recording: "The operation could not be completed."

  • CMS startup: component odbcauditdbss could not be loaded.

I keep getting the following error in the software event log:
CMS startup: component odbcauditdbss could not be loaded.
I cannot access the CMS through the administration console either.

    Hi,
please check for error messages just before the shutdown message from the cms is logged.
Is you case related to a BOBJ system that previously worked correctly? If this is the case did anything changed in the meantime on operating system level (eg. modified server name, removed/modified DB drivers or ODBC DSNs, IP address, security policies) on your server?

  • TS1440 If I don't have my startup discs can I not fix this myself?

My iMac starts up with a flashing question mark within a folder. I've seen many threads about this issue but my question is, if I don't have my startup discs can I not fix this myself?

Do you know if you had Firmware Password protection setup?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.
    Force Removing Password Protection
    1) Add or remove DIMMs to change the total amount of RAM in the computer.
    2) Then, the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (Command + Option + P + R).

If I press F1 , I get weird dots and it hangs
If i press F2, blinking cursor on top left

if this is a new system and you don't care about rebuilding it, pull one of the drives and see if it still gives you an error.   if it does then leave the second drive out, disable RAID, and try booting.   if this works then replace the second drive, destroy the array, and rebuild it from scratch.   it could be that the array data is corrupted.
if this doesn't work then call lenovo service as there may be something else going on here.   i personally don't use the intel RAID controller and prefer to use the LSI controller whenever possible.
in fact, you may consider using the LSI contoller for your SATA disks.   it's a unified SAS/SATA controller and can handle SATA drives just fine.   performance may be slightly slower but it's closer to a hardware RAID solution than the intel controller.

    Hi,
Reproducing this issue is very easy.....
1). Just Create a Admin and Managed Server
2). Start AdminServer then from Admin Console Disable the normal listen-port for admin Server (suppose it was 7001 disable it)....AND enable only the SSL port for Admin Server (example 7002).
Managed Server (Listen Port=7003 and SSL ListenPort=7004)
3). Now Try Start Managed Server.
you wil get the Exact same exception
<Jan 20, 2010 6:03:19 PM CST> <Error> <Configuration Management> <BEA-150000> <An error occurred while establishing a connection back to the adminstration server t3://140.126.24.25:6001 during startup. javax.naming.ServiceUnavailableException [Root exception is java.rmi.NoSuchObjectException: The object identified by: '31' could not be found. Either it was has not been exported or it has been collected by the distributed garbage collector.]
    And
    <Emergency> <Management> <BEA-141151> <The admin server could not be reached at http://140.126.24.25:6001.>
Now it will be easy for us to find out where is the issue actually.

I loaded files on the cRIO but used upper case letters for the startup directory.  Now I cannot access the RIO since it didn't boot. The proxy server comes up read-only so I can't reload the files or change the directory.  I tried the RS232 port but I can't get it to respond to commands even though I can see the processor boot.

Go to a website does result in Google home page loading, but it appears to be loaded locally, not via an internet connection. Have Flagfox installed as an add-on, but this does not load until I do step 2, and only then is any activity seen in the lower left hand corner of the browser as the Google page loads.
Odd thing is, without an active internet connection, FF reports page not found error and Google is not displayed.
Note that step 3 is missing a backslash at the end of the url, even tho it is set and entered properly in Options for General>Startup. ???
A https connection should also be green if valid, and I am not seeing that on most https sites. GRC.com does show this green color, but that is the only one that seems to work for me. • IBook G3 startup shortcut key commands not working with OS 9?

My iBook does not recognize any of these key commands:
    startup from disk holding "C"
    target disk mode holding "T"
    PRAM zap
    etc...
The only command it listens to is Shift to turn extensions off. My keyboard works fine and none of the keys are stuck. I've never seen anything like this, what could it possibly be?

If there's a firmware password set on the computer, it needs to be removed first. This can be tested by pressing the Option key and seeing whether a padlock appears or the command is ignored.

  • Startup key combination does not work

    Hi all,
Not quite sure what I have done...
    Received my MacBook Pro today...
I installed 10.4.8, installed boot camp 1.1.1, set a partition of 10 GB for windows and in the partition manager of the XP setup I deleted what I thought was a 100 odd MB partition and I installed XP on the 10GB partition boot camp made for me.
Done what I needed to do in XP and tried to boot up in my Mac OSX by holding down the option key on startup. Then I was presented by a screen with a Padlock image and a password box. I typed in the only password I had created for my OSX and that didn't work. So I tried using the install disc 1 by holding down the C key while booting up, it didn't work, it just boots in XP. Also the D key and other start up keys don't seem to work. I have spend all night looking for some post mentioning this but it seems that this is the only case.
    Any ideas????
    Cheers

Sounds as though you may have deleted your OS X partition from the XP partition manager?
Did you activate File Vault in OS X? I've been using Macs for years and don't encourage people to use File Vault, as so many things become impossible to remedy if anything goes wrong.
Nevertheless, if you insert your Installation Disc 1 and start up while holding down the C key, you should be able to boot from Disc 1. If that can't be done, you will need to call Apple.
If you did manage to boot up from the installation disk, I would suggest that you simply do a total zero erase and start over, with a fresh installation of OS X.

I use WLS 6.1 sp3 on Windows and UNIX (Soalris)
    Tanks.

    Hi.
You need to add the directory where you have your startup class to your classpath. The
weblogic.jar file is named specifically in the classpath, so it's not enough to put your
    classpath in the ./mydomain/lib directory.
The easiest thing to do would be to add ./mydomain/lib to your classpath in your start script.

    Michael

  • Startup problem with notebook not booting. complained of primary internal (601) problem

Repeated booting sequence and notebook not booting fully to Windows. Complaining of  battery internal (601) error.
How do i get my notebook to complete the startup process without changing the battery?

    Hi,
The 601 error does mean you'll need to replace your notebooks main battery - you can find more details on battery error codes Here.
While the battery is still connected, even if you clear the cmos, the error code will simply generate again so in the meantime, you should be able to avoid the error code if you shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter, remove the battery and run the notebook just on the AC Adapter.
