Static IP wirelessly

I'm having trouble setting up a Static IP address for my Macbook. I can do it fine when I use Ethernet to connect. But when going wirelessly and using Airport to connect, whatever I do to set up the Static IP fails.
I just go into System Preferences, then Network, choose Airport from the list, click Advanced, then under TCP/IP I change Configure IPv4 from 'Using DHCP' to 'Manually' where I then enter the details: I use the same Subnet Mask and Router IP Address that I use when making the Static IP address via an Ethernet connection (but choosing a different Static IP obviously) but this doesn't work. Airport says I'm connected and I get the green light but when I try Firefox or any other program that requires the Internet, it says I'm not connected.
What am I missing here? I've been trying for months and can't find anything helpful anywhere.

dechamp: When I try to get on that page, I get the "Page Load Error" page. It says "Failed to Connect" and "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 216.239.122.102". Also, when I try to get on a different page, like Google, I get another "Page Load Error" page but this time it says "Address not found" and "Firefox can't find the server at www.google.com.au". So you can see the distinction between them.
William Kucharski: If I'm correct and you mean the Subnet Mask, that's something I've never changed. The information I've gotten for that comes from my router's gateway. It says to use 255.255.255.0 as the Subnet Mask unless I'm "implementing subnetting" and I don't think I'm doing that with the whole static IP thing. Am I? Oh, and as for pointing to my router, when I assign the static IP manually, it asks me to input the router's IP and I do that. And that comes from the bottom of the unit because it's also what I use to access the gateway. If you don't mean any of the things I've mentioned, I'm probably too stupid when it comes to this stuff and you will need to expand.
Thomas A Reed: I can get it back working if I go back to using DHCP. I've tried tonnes of times to get this static IP working but it never does and I just go back to using DHCP again. When I do that, I'm given an IP address by the router, one that's not in use by any other computer, ie. my brother's laptop using Vista (which funnily enough I CAN set up a static IP for), and the "lease" for that IP lasts an hour, and is then renewed automatically before it expires. The dynamic IP/lease system is the only way I can be connected when using Airport. Otherwise I can use Ethernet with a static IP or DHCP.
BobHarris: I only have the one router. I mean, I only have the one router here. I don't know about what my ISP has on their end or anything but as far as I know, there's only one that I use here.

WRT54GC Vers. 2 - Internet won't work without a proxy setting in browser but I don't need a proxy

I have an ISDN line that is connected by CYTA the telephone authority here in Cyprus, who also issued the Modem, however my ISP is different (they are also in Cyprus and are called Spidernet)
My problem is that recently after resetting the WRT54GC Vers. 2 router I am now forced to enter proxy details into the web browser, I am sure it must be a simple setting in the router that I am missing and would be very grateful for your help.
I have 6 or 7 computers all connected through an exchange by ethernet cables and when connecting the modem into the WRT54GC Vers. 2 router I am forced to enter a proxy in the browsers settings. My current settings are
Static IP
Wireless: Disabled
Internet IP Address: (numbers entered)
Subnet Mask: (numbers entered)
Default Gateway: (numbers entered)
Static DNS 1: (numbers entered)
(note) the Static DNS 1: & Default Gateway have the same numbers This problem only occurred after resetting WRT54GC Vers. 2 router, I telephoned my ISP and they told me I should not need to enter a proxy as I have an ISDN line and that the numbers I have entered are correct.
In order to check if the router settings were causing this problem and to see if I could still connect without a proxy I connected one computer directly to the modem and entered the connection settings my ISP provided me with into my TCP/IP network settings, after setting the browser settings back to automatically configure it worked perfectly and the connection seems more fluid.

Your ISP is correct...You need to do any proxy settings to go online.
What exactly the error message you are getting without the proxy settings ?
What proxy settings you are doing on the computer ?
What is the default gateway and DNS provide by the ISP ?

BEFW11S4 & VPN

Here's hoping you can help me - I've done everything possible - believe me! When using my Linksys BEFW11S4 router with my VPN s/w (MS Remote Access - MSRA) .. my VPN is not stable and drops consistently every 10/15/20 minutes. It is getting very very frustrating!! I believe MSRA is configured for IPSec encryption. Right now I am trying to undertsand - what is 'IPSec Passthrough' enabled/disabled mean? This is enabled on the Linksys config page - Security tab/VPN Passthrough section. I am wondering if this may be contributing to my problem. Please advise.
When I say I have done everything, I mean this:
wireless laptop is configured to use static ip
wireless router has been upgraded to latest firmware
MTU size has been reset to 1365
port forwarding/triggering has been setup
no firewall S/W
Nothing is working. Even though the wireless router is probably 3+ years old, it is hard for me to believe it is the H/W. Someone recommended I buy a NetGear wireless router. I'm trying to give this one more shot!

Yes I was on DHCP - yet Linksys Support suggested I go with assigning Static IP, so I did that and it still isn't working well - dropping consistently every 10 - 15 minutes. Linksys Support somewhat "guaranteed" me the Static IP assignment would work - and it doesn't.
In any case, yes I am accessing my VPN wireless - via my wireless laptop. It is my work VPN S/W. I believe it is built on MSRA - Microsoft Remote Access.
In any case, I talked to a colleague this AM - and I think I've come to the conclusion it is time to buy another router; this one too old to work with new laptop. He recommended the Linksys WRT54G product.
Unless you have any other recommendations and/or troubleshooting ideas?

firefox browser, xp pro sp3 32-bit. printer is wireless officejet pro 8500 a909g set up as static ip wireless.

the HP auto-detection page doesn't say anything about not being cross-browser. so one should assume it is, yes?
if it isn't, shouldn't it be fixed? nobody uses IE anymore if they don't absolutely have to. my guess is that was the browser you were inferring.
but like I said, it got to *98%*, which means it was working in firefox up to a point, then hung. so there is a bug in it, so please have engineering fix the plugin. thanks. they need to know it's broken on this platform with this browser. I have not tried it with windows 7 yet.

Manual IP and DHCP conflicts

My Barricade g died (SMC2804WBRP-G). I replaced it with an Airport Extreme (802.11g).
With the Barricade g, I had manually assigned IP address to all the computers on the LAN (range 192.168.x.1-192.168.x.99). The router distributed IP addresses to the wireless clients via DHCP range (192.162.x.100-192.168.x.200)
I've setup the AEBS to Distribute IP addresses and selected Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT).
BUT, the AEBS is assigning some of the manual addresses to wireless client IP requests. Then the computer that is supposed to have a manual IP address doesn't have one. Basically, the manual and DHCP addresses are coming from the same pool and causing conflicts.
How do I deal with manual IP addresses AND DHCP with this router?

In other words, on the network, LAN=static IPs, Wireless clients=DHCP.
You can have both static and DHCP on the same network.

Confusion w/wap54g lan & wifi sides of network

Hi everyone!
I am planning to install wap54g on my home lan with static ip, while i would like to have my guests to login wirelessly using dhcp (with wep key).
So, is it possible to have lan side of wap54g static, while wireless - dhcp?
I found a page where to change lan configurations, while I can't seem to figure out where do I change wifi network configurations.
As it stands, wap54g has just been reset.

eLena --- I think that what you proposed will work OK as long as you follow the usual Linksys rules for assigning fixed addresses. You will need to turn on the DHCP server in your router.
The Linksys DHCP server typically uses the range of 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.149.
Any address in the 192.168.1.x range can be used as a fixed address except x = 0, 1, 254, and the DHCP server range (usually 100 thru 149).
Also remember that the WAP54G will be using the fixed address 192.168.1.245 by default.
Never assign a fixed address in the DHCP server range.

How to setup a static IP for a wireless printer

This problem has been ongoing for several versions of OS X and the last five printers I've had and I'm finally over messing with it. For some reson, when using a wireless printer with OS X this is a repetetive problem, and I think if I configured the printer to a static IP address instead of using DHCP, it might work better. At least once a week, if not more often, I'll print something and get the ubiquitous Dock error of "Printer is not connected". The printer is still in Preferences, but if I delete it, then it doesn't show up as it should for selection.
The only way to fix this is reboot, and then the printer shows up again in Preferences. I select it and all is well again...until a few days pass and the same thing happens again. Using an HP LaserJet P1102w, still a current model, but it doesn't matter which printer I use. I also have an Epson Artisan 725 and the same thing happens with it about once a week. Also, this happens from both my Mac and my wife's Mac, so it's not an issue with just my machine.
I've searched for documentation on how to setup a static IP address for a wireless printer with the Airport Extreme, but all I find are tutorials on how to do it with an ethernet hard-wired printer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could set up your router to do manual assignment of IP address instead of using DHCP, but that is a PITA, because then you'd have to manually set up IP for all your devices.
If you have AirPOrt Extreme, you could do this:
In your Apple TV, go to the Settings >> About and write down the MAC address of your ATV
Start up the AiPort Admin Utility
Go to Network tab
click + in the DHCP reservations
Choose an IP you want for your ATV & Enter the MAC address
From now on, this IP address will be reserved to the MAC address and only your ATV will be able to get it, no other device will.
It is not a static IP in a true sense, but behaves just like one.
Works great for me...
If you don't have a AP Extreme, I'm sure other routers will allow you do reservations too.

How to use both wired and wireless connection with static addresses

Now that I have setup my home network with static addresses (router, mini1, mini2 and PC) in the way I want, (big thanks to BDAqua http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1271635&tstart=0) I would like to understand some more advanced network concepts.
I would like to change the network so that I use both the wireless connection and the built-in ethernet connection at the same time in my Mac mini1. I would like to connect my PC to my Mac mini by using the wired ethernet connection so that I reach the Internet from my PC as well. I would also like to be in control of all the addresses therefore I want to assign the addresses manually.
The question: What addresses should I use between mini1 and PC? Should I use the same wireless address space as I already use between the wireless router and the other computers (router: 192.168.1.1, mini1: 192.168.1.101, mini2: 192.168.1.103) or should I use something totally different like 10.X.X.X? What should I put in ethernet connection "Router"-field, the same as in Airport (192.168.1.1)? What about DNS, same as in Airport?

If I understand this correctly, you wish your Mini to perform Internet Sharing for your PC, correct!?
If so you'll pretty much have to let the Mini handle DHCP & NAT on the Ethernet port. You also want to be sure Airport is dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations, that's what position the Mini will use 1st for Internet itself.
On the Mini turn on both Web Sharing & Internet Sharing. The PC once connected will have the Mini's Ethernet IP as it's Gateway addy.

How to adjust wireless setting to static IP

I have a HP 4620 wireless. shows ready to go, but is "offline" to my laptop. I use two routers (ext) in the house. Have tried to adjust settings as shown in one of the posts IP Address 254 or less.... but won't allow the settings. Please help me to solve this problem.

When you setup the printer make sure you set it up on the main router.
Print a configuration report.

If you have a valid ip address for the printer try and access the embedded web server.
Type the ip address into internet explorer address bar.
If it loads the printer's network page then the printer is on the network.
Power cycle the computer, printer and router.
Try printing again.

I have a WRT610N with 3 PCs wired and various wireless devices accessing. 1 of the wireless devices, running Windows 7, needs to run a static IP. Do/Can I set this up in the router or do I need to do in the PC?

You can use DHCP reservation in the router to assign a fixed IP address to the PC.
Or you can set the static IP address on the PC directly.

WRT400N wireless router industrial network static IP

I have two small industrial networks all with static IP addresses. One network uses IP 192.168.83.xxx and the other uses 192.168.84.xxx. I plan to add two more of 192.168.82.xxx and 192.168.81.xxx where xxx is the last number of the devices. I had a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 for each. I wanted to use the abobe wireless router to connect by LAN each of the networks and then use wireless from my PC to connect to them. I am able to set the static address of the router to work with any one network but not all at the same time. There is no internet or intranet available and I have tried used the internet port to connect without success. Any sugestions? I think the problem is with my subnet mask but the router does not let me choose 255.255.0.0 as a subnet which is what I think I need to do this.

Well its not possible to change the Subnet Mask of your Router... As all the Routers works on a Class C Subnet Mask... You can try DD-WRT Firmware and check if they have the open to make your Router work with a Different Subnet..

TC XBox360 wireless incompatibility: Has anyone tried static IP?

I've been reading the XBox XBox360 wireless incompatibility for a couple of days now. I'm like 5 hrs from a decision on whether to pick up the TC or AEBS and naturally have a preference of the TC for disk.
Everyone has tried with various security (and non-security) settings and I've not heard of it working wirelessly. But has anyone a static IP on the XBox360? Does that work? I couldn't find anyone who's tried that in the forums (or I didn't look hard enough).

The problem that everyone is having is using the TC as the primary router within a house and connecting the xbox 360 to if via wifi. The two do not get on!!!! From what I can gather you have another router plugged into a lan port on the back of the TC, thus you Xbox 360 can connect via wifi through this router, like this

WPA Wireless and static IP?

Hello, I have a WPA (not WPA2) encrypted wifi network at my house. I have both arch boxes connected to it fine. But I want to assign a static IP to one of them. Are the procedures the same as for an ethernet device? I would think not, but I am not sure how to do this.

You can either set the router to assign specific IPs based on each computer's MAC address (this is how you do it on the kind of router I have, for example), or you can configure it on each of the computers. This is, for example, how I have it set up on my computer using WPA2 network and netcfg.

I am getting a lot of static when using Brookstone wireless headphones and watching movies on the Apple TV. I know it is not headphones, because they work fine when I switch it to cable TV, then the sound is clear with no static. Any suggestions?

Ok so I've been doing more testing. It's all videos on the iTunes store. Anytime I try to download a podcast or stream it or anything it's super slow. To download an episode of Diggnation it tells me over 2 hours to download but the time keeps climbing and I just stop the transfer.
Some people said it's an Open DNS thing? Maybe it is but it's not computer specific and I couldn't find a way to change the DNS settings in my Airport, only on each computer. I tried deleting PLists and restoring my Apple TV and restoring my Airport and nothing is working.
I don't know if it an issue with me, my ISP or Apple. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Unable to set static IP to wireless printer Officejet 6600

First sorry my poor english, still keep trying We do have an HP Officjet 6600 Printer for about 6 months.This printer has USB and WLAN, but no LAN port. We used the printer until 2 weeks ago. At that time, **bleep** starts ...As long as we used the printer, he was connected via Automated WLAN (DHCP) and everything worked fine.The printer was connected to our WLAN Modem which assigned the DHCP IP Adress automatically.Then, our Internet provider updated our cable modem, which is also our WLAN router, and since that time, the printer does not work anymore. He always shows an error after booting, and told us to restart the printer, and all lamps of the printer are continously blinking. There is no way to access the printer menus on the printer.After a long and intensiv internet research, i found out that the cable modem is responsible for the printer error!It looks like the WLAN DHCP Server of the cable modem sends DHCP messages, which the printer cannot use correctly. If I shut down the modem (with the integrated WLAN router), the printer boots normal without an error, but I cannot use him becaused he is not connected to WLAN as because the modem is offline.So I wanted to set the printer to not use DHCP by assigning static IP to the printer. But this does not work! I tried 10 times or more to assign static IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS-Server, no way, the printer always show "IP not set" (same for the others). Can anybody tell me why I'm not able to set static IP, Gateway etc. to the printer?!Thanks for every suggestion.

Since you now have a new cable modem, let's start with a more basic approach. Please use the following document for instruction to reset the printer to your new network settings: Connecting the Printer After Changing Your Wireless Network. You may notice, when you open the link, that the full title mentions the Photosmart B209a, the instructions presented apply to your printer to so please don't be alarmed. I hope this helps.
