Staying connected in 10.4.8 with new G5

Hi all,
I just got a new G5 Intel iMac and have had great success transfering all of my setting and data from my old g4 iMac via the Migration Assistant and Target Disk Mode to the new machine. No problems at all. It was a breeze!
However, now that the new machine is up and running I periodically get this message: "This is your reminder that your connection is still active. Do you wish to remain connected?" Then it offers two buttons: " Disconnect" and "Stay connected" I remember that with an older version of OS 10, either Panther or Jaguar, I would get such messages but there was a System Preferences panel in which you could shut this message off and stay permanently online without having to hang around during long downloads and punching the "Stay connected" button. This message never appeared on the old G4 iMac even though I was running the very same version of Tiger (10.4.8) on it that I now have on the new iMac. Apparently the setting to turn off this message didn't transfer over and, what's worse, there is nowhere I can find in the Tiger System Preferences where I can shut it off.
Does anyone know how to do this?
Thanks everyone.
Rick

A G5 iMac and an Intel iMac are 2 different model iMacs.

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:

  • Problem staying connected to my Wireless Network with my HPPhotosmart e-All-in-One Printer - D110a

I just bought a new HP wireless printer replacing my old HP wireless printer which the wireless part worked fine, but the printing died.
New printer HPPhotosmart e-All-in-One Printer - D110a. I have installed and re-installed the software and drivers but can't get my printer to stay connected to my laptop. I have a Linksys "WRT54GL router but have the printer set with a static IP address. When I run tests on the computer and printer everything says it is fine. But every 30 seconds or so.. my printer goes offline on my computer and is especially noticeable when I am using the HP Solution center because it will keep blinking in the windows bar. I have talked to 4 technicians but no one can figure out what the problem is. They keep saying that it is on my end, but the old printer which was also an HP (Wireless 6150) never had any problems and I have not changed anything in my routing. Is anyone else having this kind of problem and has found a successful solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My computer is running Windows XP SP3
Currently my router has WEP encryption, but I tried them all just to see if that had anything to do with it. (WEP works best for me since I have some devices which can only use WEP to communicate).
    Thanks.

Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). Yours is 192.18.1.100 to .149.  Let's use 192.168.1.200 for your printer.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway and first DNS. Leave the second one blank.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.

  • Having trouble staying connected to IEEE 802.1X with my iPhone 4s

I got my iPhone 4S pre-ordered with Verizon and I am having trouble staying connected to my college's 802.1x WiFi connection. My college has a help website with a walkthrough to connect to the network and it works and I can get WiFi on my phone but when I lock my phone for about 1 minute my phone forgets the connection and I have to go through the steps all over again to get connected.
Here are the steps my school site has me follow:
Connecting to the RPI Wireless Network Using 802.1x Authentication on the iPhone / iPod Touch
Make sure that your device has been updated to the latest software version available.
Go into Settings and select Wi-Fi.
Make sure the Wi-Fi switch is set to ON.
Under Choose a Network, select Other....
Enter rpi_802.1x for the Network Name, and press the Security option.
Select WPA2 Enterprise as the security, then press the Other Network button in the top-left corner to return to the previous screen.
Enter your RCS userID and password in the appropriate fields and press the blue Join button in the bottom-right.
Let the network access load, then press the Accept button to accept the certificate provided.
This is really annoying so any help would be appreciated.

We use 802.1x Authentication here at UCSD and it seems fine.
The only problem i see is it will disconnect when you lock the phone but it automatically reconnects when you unlock the phone.
Our setup is a lot simpler, you just select the network and enter in your AD account information.
It could be your college has not setup their wifi correctly. You should connect your network team.

  • Cannot connect to Lacie Ed Mini with new Airport Extreme BS

I've just bought a new AE and cannot connect to my Ed Mini when its connected to an ethernet port when using an XP PC. I'm using the AE in bridged mode (temporarily) but I'm not sure if this is preventing being able to connect to the drive or not. Help!! any ideas? thanks in advance.
    Windows XP Pro

    Thanks Stuart, nice set up!
I listened to your advice and it worked!!!! They are both synced up, however somewhere in the setting I seem to get some problems.
I can use both Desktop(LAN only) and Imac (wireless only) to play Airtunes however I realized that the Imac is surfing the net using the Airport Express rather than the Airport Extreme. Hence a very slow surfing experience.
I went back into the Airport Express and set to join an existing network and tried using a different name, so the Imac won't use the Express to do the surfing. Upon resetting the Express, the green light is active which is good news but now I cannot play Airtunes on both my machines. So I guess even with the green light, the Extreme and Express are not linked up. Am I right?
Furthermore I can get my Imac to use the Extreme to surf the net which is ideal but have the problem where I cannot play Airtunes with Express. I think it's because Express is not linked with my Extreme base station.
What I want is for both machines to surf the net at normal fast speed using Extreme, and for Itunes to connect to Express via Extreme and play my music using Airtunes so I can get great music out on my HiFi.
Any solutions, or settings I need to do? Much appreciated for all feedback from members here.
    Thanks!

  • Iphone 4 does not stay connected to my network

Since upgrading to 6.1, my iPhone 4 does not stay connected to my network.  I have to input my password each time I leave my house.  My other devices stay connected, so the issue is with the upgrade.  Has anyone found a way to keep their IPhone connected to their network?  Thanks.

I don't have another phone to try. I took out the sim to check for deffects but it looked fine. Cleaned the sim card with alcohol and cleaned the aim compartment. Phone didn't loose Internet connection all day yesterday, but this morning went to check emails and wouldn't update until I turned airplane mode on then off again.

  • Magic mouse not staying connected

Magic Mouse is not staying connected. It pairs up with my iMac for about 20 seconds or so, and then the connection is lost.
This is not a battery issue, as they have been changed
Nothing else about computer setup has changed.
This is the second mouse I have had to buy for this computer. I replaced the previous one in April 2013.
And now this one is now misbehaving....or more precisely not working on an ongoing basis.
Today I had to buy a wired Apple mouse just to be able to get onto this Community.
    Not a happy camper here.

Sorry, I've assumed you already download it. Please visit the link provided below and see which bluetoth utility applies to your OS; the latest is Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.0.1
I had a similar bluetooth problem in the past and aparently this utility took care of it.
    Best regards.

  • Is anyone having a problem with the new iPad (Gen. 3) not staying connected to the charger? It seems to ALWAYS get jiggled loose and no longer be charging. My iPad 1 has no issue but I can't browse Internet w/o new iPad unplugging. Horrible!

I notice that my new IPad (3rd generation) will not stay connected to the power cord at all, I'm not exagerating, if I plug it in and browse the Internet without fail it will become unplugged and I will have to push the plug back in (Ba-beep). Ive actually grown to despise that sound when you plug your iPhone or iPad in because it reminds me of how much money I spent on something that PHYSICALLY will not charge while I'm using it.
I know the problem with it holding a charge while in use, I get it, the screen is amazing and it takes a lot to run the display, however, it is unacceptable to me that I can't even keep the thing plugged in while I'm using it. I can not even leave it on my Cal King bed overnight because I will wake up in the morning to find that the plug has been jiggled loose in a corner, so it's still attached but not making a connection thus not being charged.
I love the 4GLTE from Verizon and I love the iPad, but I'm actually using my 1st generation IPad while I am at home so I can leave my new $900 iPad on a table to charge free of incident so I can use the 4G while I'm away from wifi during the day. I have been getting more upset about this because I can not even use the Griffin extended cord to charge the iPad and be far from the plug because only the original apple sync/charge cord will have a better shot at staying in. Absolutely none of my non apple cables will stay in the iPad 3 while having it in my hands.
The plug is at an angle, unlike the first iPad, not sure about the iPad 2. Please let me know if they have same issue.
If anyone else is having this problem with the Gen 3 iPad please let me know because I'm tempted to do something about it with apple and I'm hoping that I just for some reason have a bad cable receiver or something and maybe I can get a replacement and enjoy the iPad as I had expected to. There is no reason why I should be even using my first iPad and I have friends that want to buy it but I am not selling it because I'm unable to sell it because I can't handle the new iPad while it's plugged in, that is ridiculous if it's a common issue so please let me know!

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
    Thanks again!

  • Can't Stay Connected to WIFI with brand new MBA

I just set up my new MBA, and cannot stay connected to wifi, no matter what I do. Sitting next to my MBA is my IPAD and IPhone which both show wifi connection working. I have followed the advice from the community posted in August ( wish I knew the MBA wifi problem before buying), with no luck. No other devices shows wifi connectivity problems, router works great, and I cannot download any patches due to connectivity issue.  UGH.  Any wisdom to share?
    Thanks

Have you tried connecting to other WiFi connections? If so does it do the same?
If not, it might just be to do with the amount of periphirals on your current router and subsequently your router is kicking off you iPhone.
Or you could try changing your broadcasting channel in your internet router settings and see if this fixes it

  • [solved] connectivity issues with new connection....

Hey all, I recently moved and had to get a new internet connection.  Because cable is so expensive in the city (~$57/mon for 1.5MB Cable) I went with DSL (~$36/mon for 3.0MB DSL).
I have the standard SBC DSL modem, connected to my wireless router.  I'm 90% sure the wireless connection is stable.  The phone lines may be crappy in this building, but I've switched to different sockets here and there.  I'm not sure exactly what it is, but my connection intermittently hangs - no, wlan0 stays connected so it's not that.
What I'm looking for is a way to diagnose this... some logging tool that would be able to tell me where my hang is... I'm not a network guru, so I really wouldn't know what to do...
Thanks for any help you can provide...

phrakture wrote:OT: Think it would hurt anything to remove the fan connector from the processor on an 866P3 - the heatsink is pretty large, but the fan is irritating sounding and I don't feel like paying $20 for a good fan for a shitty machine
You can drop it's noise quite a bit by using an adjustable rheostat and using the 5/12 connections to power it.  That's an old OC'er trick.  With your older P3 rig, I doubt the mobo has a fan speed detector, limiting you from posting.  If it does, it won't work since it needs a ground at 0V.  Basically, you'll be running your fan at a slower speed.
Check the OC forums.  I'm sure they dot links to do it.
Oh, by the way Phrakture, I remember my old P3 800.  I had it with just a heatsink for a while, but it ran too hot for my tastes.  I got away with a bare naked PII-400 all the time, but I've been too afraid since then.
[edit]By the way, here's some info for a 7V fan. Just do a google on "7V" fan and you'll get the results I was talking about earlier.  Basically,
" You use the yellow 12v wire as the power connector to the fan and use the red 5v connector as the fan ground.  The fan sees the potential difference between the 12v and the 5v so is run at 7 volts.  Fans can be run at 5v but some will fail to start and air flow is low."[/edit]

  • Brand new iPod touch won't stay connected to Wifi

I got a brand new white iPod touch for Christmas, and I can get it to connect to the internet and I can use the internet, but then after a few minutes it drops off the connection and I have to go back in and reconnect it. I know there isn't anything wrong with the wifi connection at my house because I have an older iPod touch (3rd generation) and it has always connected and stayed connected without a problem. My mom and brother also got the same iPod touches for Christmas, and theirs do the same exact thing.

Change the router SSID (network name) and password to something shorter than the defaults.  If you dig into the router configuration web page you will find a short SSID.  My SSID is 5 characters long, and the password I use is 10 charcters long.

    Rick

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for the quick response! I looked at the "about this Mac" in the Apple menu and here's what it states:
"2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo"
I tell you this because I originally posted this question in the iMac G5 forum and they told me to post it over here in the Intel Mac forum. I'm starting to get even more confused.
Also, I looked again at the Network setting in System Preferences and there is no PPP or Options choice anywhere. Instead it just tells me this:
"Built-in Ethernet is set up to use PPPoE." and "You are connected to the internet via Built-in Ethernet."
And I am indeed connected via the ethernet port to a DSL modem. I do remember in previous versions of OS 10 doing exactly what you suggested in your post to get that blasted pop-up message to stop annoying me and, like you said, "Problem [was] gone". This message never bothered me on my old iMac g4 (which was a power PC Mac) but now, maybe because of this new chip it's baaaaaack So with this further information do you have any other ideas?
    Thanks again,
    Rick

  • WRT54G v.5 will not stay connected to new laptop/Windows 7 Premium

WRT54G v.5 will not stay connected to new laptop/Windows 7 Premium. It continuously runs through a cycle of detecting, connecting, losing connection; detecting, connecting, losing connection, etc. A the router runs through this cycle, basically acting as if I have disconnected then reconnected to power to reset it, it disrupts my Internet connection to both my wired iMac and other, wireless desktop upstairs. Paid for Linksys support today and through remote access he set up a new network on my desktop (iMac). After he finished, the problem still existed. When I told him the problem hadn't been fixed,  he told me just wait for an hour or so and it should work itself out. It, of course, did not work itself out. Any ideas out there?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Never mind-I seem to have fixed the problem with a simple firmware upgrade. Funny how the Linksys support technician didn't think to ask what version of the router I have or suggest that I should try upgrading the firmware first. He was, however, quite good at trying to upsell me to a new router instead of trying to help me fix the problem I was having. Makes me want to go buy Netgear next time, thank you very much!
