Staying connected to shares: bizarre solution

I just solved a network connectivity problem we've been having but the solution leaves me completely baffled. A little background first...
For the last few months, I've been working to keep a Mac in our system that carries out automated processing tasks connected to a number of network shares. I wrote a shell script that mounts the shares and I run it through launchd at login (and every 10 minutes to pick up any dropped connections.) When it runs though launchd, it produces "broken pipe" errors in the system log and it never connects to any shares. If I run the script from the command line, it connects, no errors.
After working through numerous theories about this, I discovered today that the script won't actually connect to the shares unless a Finder window is open that shows the icons of the shares.
This means the script works through launchd if I start it with this command:
*open /*
That pops open a Finder window and the shares subsequently connect just fine. If I leave that part out, no go. I get the "broken pipe" errors in the system log.
Can anyone explain to me why this is the case? I don't mind having to do that, but after several months of pulling my hair out, I'd at least like to have an understanding of what causes this.
The machine is running 10.5.8, btw.
Here's a snippet of the login script I'm running. Pretty basic stuff.
*mkdir '/Volumes/Pags'*
*mount_smbfs //bez-adv2/Pags /Volumes/Pags*
*mkdir '/Volumes/data'*
*mount_smbfs //bez-adv2/data /Volumes/data*
*mkdir '/Volumes/personal_folders'*
*mount_smbfs //bez-nwed/personal_folders /Volumes/personal_folders*
etc...

I'll definitely look into it. I'd be happy to find out I'm wrong about that.
I've been tinkering with the login script however, adding in a user name as part of the connection command and having some luck, but it's still not consistent. It seems to fail at login and sometimes succeed when the script runs again 10 minutes later.
It's been in the back of my mind that maybe the machine is somehow failing to authenticate to Active Directory early enough in the process and maybe that's interfering with the ability to connect.
Right after rebooting, I see a bunch of messages in the system log from DirectoryServices along these lines
*enter machine password*
/SourceCache/samba/samba-187/samba/source/libads/kerberos.c:adskinitpassword(228)
*kerberoskinitpassword [email protected] failed: Client not found in kerberos database*
Funny thing is that iphone-3 is not the name of the machine where this is running. That's something else entirely.

  • 10.3.9 Won't stay connected to a SMB Share

I have a G5 iMac running 10.4.10 and a G4 iBook running 10.3.9. On my home network I have a NAS drive (Simpleshare by Simpletech) running a Linux system. The NAS has a common share named NETFOLDER used to store common files, MP3s etc.
I can connect to the NAS with my iMac and stay connected for as long as I want/need to but the iBook connects and then drops the connection after a couple of minutes. I get an error message on the iBpook that says the connection to the server was dropped (-50).
I have been told by a local Apple reseller that this is a problem with 10.3 but I can't find anything on the web to indicate that others have problems. I've asked the Genius in the local Apple store about this and they don't seem to know of any issues.
I don't think the problem is with the NAS drive as the iMac running 10.4.10 has no problems.
Is anyone familiar with this issue and are there any thoughts on how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    David

I have upgraded the iBook to Leopard so this problem should be resolved.

  • HP 7510 AIO printer won't stay connected - Wired workstation, wireless printer

Hi!  I spoke (and checked solution button) too soon. The printer still "disappears" from the Wired XP network workstation. The only difference since applying the solution given is that the disconnects are now happening about every 12 hours, vs every couple of hours.
Ink notification is set to "only when I print"
Static IP is set for all machines
HNDU works -- when the printer is visible but will hang the workstation if printer is not visible.
    Original comments follow below;
HP 7510 wireless printer disappears -- 4 station XP wireless network, w/ 1 PC hardwired.

    Printer: HP 7510
Network:  multi-station wireless, thru DLink DI-632 (one PC hardwired to router)
Address Config:   Printer is using static IP -- outside of DCHP range (192.168.15.240)
Printer Config: Each computer has static IP set into the control panel app, using IP addressing.
Operating System:  XP (Service Pack 3)
Other devices:  Ipad, Xoom and Kindle Fire (all working using ePrint)
Network Security Protocol: WEP (we're out in the country)
Network Setup:  Main router, along with 2 access ports (hardwired); currently using channels 1, 5 and 11 (again, we're in the country and have little competition for channels)
File Sharing: All machines in network have one open "share" drive, accessable with passwork.
Scenario:  Wireless computers appear to stay connected for several days to a week at a time. (We reboot weekly, just as a SOP)
Computer that is wired to the network loses communication with the printer a couple of times a day and needs to be rebooted in order to restore connection.
When this happens, other machines continue to print and scan, with no problems, and the wired machine continues to have its name displayed in the SCANNING panel on the printer -- but the printer won't talk to it.   All network functions, including internet and intranet access to the printer's EWS is still available.  I have noticed that if I go into check ink levels, though, that the ink check software behaves differently.
Normally in the ink status app, there is a small "working" icon with 6 dots. When this computer is connected properly, it will start jumping around the circle, showing activitiy, get to 41%, and then display the ink status info.  When the printer/computer connection is not working, the "working" icon will go to just a couple of percent then jump to the printer information page, showing make, model, serial number, firmware level etc.
In every instance so far, rebooting (with no other action) brings the printer/computer connection back to life -- until next time.  I am trying to find any other pattern for this behavior, just can't identify it yet.
I started out with the plain vanilla installation, but then every computer in the network would consistently drop connections, about every 45 minutes. Using the info on this forum, I've eliminated the drop-outs for those printers, and got to the Static IP solutions (we've done that anyway for years with net-ready machines).  This is the last machine that "drops off"  It appears that some piece of HP-required software is "dropping out" or getting clobbered, but I cannot see a pattern, even checking and noting the various software used locally on the machine, and the various websites visited. So far, no pattern.
I am hoping that an HP guru with access to the source for the "ink supply" status software can take a look at what is happening and why it will always go to 41% and then display ink status (when connected) and then only go a couple of percent and display the ink status (when it isn't connected).
    Thanks, in advance,
    jim

    More info:
In last paragraph, above, the request for "ink status" is returned with a static display of the printer firmware version, driver version, step level, MAC# etc of the printer, not "ink status" when the printer is disconnected.
Also, when printer is disconnected the HP home networking utility will hang the system -- a hard reboot is required, which restores the printer, until the next time it goes "into the woods".  Signal stregth, measured on the printer, is 4 bars (very good).

Thanks!  That appears to solve the problem.  After your suggestion, I remembered that I set the "ink level warning" on this machine ONLY to "Always warn me", as opposed to "tell me only when I am printing".  That seemed to be the problem. Only the computer that was set to "always warn on low ink-levels" was disconnecting -- the others worked fine! Now, all are working fine.
Just to be safe, though, I've also turned off the "scan from printer to computer" function on each computer. That was set for each machine, and seemed to work fine. The other machines in the network did not disconnect, and the printer was tracked whether each computer was on or off.   May try to turn it on later; I'll see if the family uses that feature very often!
    Thank you for your help.

I spoke too soon!  After about 26 hours, the printer connection on the one "hard-wired" CPU dropped, which is better than before, but still not solid.  Same exact symptoms as before. Only piece of the puzzle that was different this time is about 50 pages were scanned, some to this computer.  Used the "Scan requested from CPU" process, rather than enabling the "Scan TO Cpu" function in the software app.  It did not drop the connection immediately after -- about 1 hour to 1.5 hours afterwards.  Suspect this is a coincidence, not a cause of the problem with this machine.
I also scanned (same approach) from one other CPU on the network -- that wifi connection is still rock-solid.

I think it is fixed now.....the problem seems to reside in the module that will notify you immediately if ink is low (vs notify me only when printing).  If, when initially installed, the user selects "immediately", then the printer will randomly disappear. (More on "re-finding it" later.)
Also, it is difficult to change the ink notification setting, because it appears not to be "sticky", but will sometimes, flip. (I've not figured this out yet).  As long as the setting for "low ink notification" is on "only when printing", life is good.
If the printer does disappear, go over to the Advanced tab when the printer software/firmware page comes up, instead of the current ink levels.  Reset the selection about "tell me about ink notification" to "only when printing", and then toggle the "autoshut off" from "NEVER" to "2 hours" and then, finally, back to "NEVER".  Then, lastly, press closed on the panel.  Printer should be connected again. To test, go to the Photosmart 7510 app again, and select "Show estimated ink levels".  The counter will start at 1%, jump to 41% and then bounce around until it displays the ink level.
FOR HP TECH:  Please consider making the "ink level notification" persistent in the registry OR provide a de-install tool that will completely clean all traces of the prior installation of the 7510 driver / app in the registry, so that a new install may have this setting saved correctly.
Hope this helps some of you -- it's an excellent printer once its running!

  • Can not stay connected to Airport express

I have an airport exress that is less then 9 months old.  I have my internet provide wirlessely so my macbook pro picks up the signal and i share it with the airport exress.  With the AE set to bridge mode.  This was all working fine for the last 3 months, but now for some reason I can not stay connected with any of my devices wirelessly with the AE.  I try to connect with my Iphone 4s and when i click on the network to connect i never recieve a check mark on the left all it does is give me the moving circle.  I try to search the web on the phone and it will work for a second then not work for who know how long then work for a second ect.... i have hard rebooted the AE, reset network settings in my phone, reset smc and pram.  when i access the ae through airport utility on my mac the internet shows green and the AE show amber becuase it says it does not have a valid ip address.  I access the AE from my phone and the AE shows the same and the internet will go from green to amber and back.  Also it will not stay connected to the AE i try to change setting on the AE through my phone and as long as i do it quickly it works fine, but if i wait anylonger then 10-30 seconds the phone drops the AE and i have to start over even though it will pick it up again with in  a second or two.  this is the same for ipad, three iphones, dell computer, and a android phone.

Simply reconfigure your Airport Express to either use for airtunes only or to extend the range of the existing network. This effectively connects the Airport Express to your main wireless router as a basic access node rather than a separate router creating its own network.
If you consult the User Guide that came with your Airport Express you'll find additional information on how to setup an Express to simply extend a local wireless network rather than function independently.

  • Native VPN PPTP client won't stay connected

    Folks,
I have setup my VPN using the Mac OSX native PPTP VPN client to connect to my client's work network. However, it appears that it won't stay connected.  I have been searching the net for answers.  I can't find a definitely one.  Does anyone have the same issue where you can share your solution with me please?
To be more specific, I have a Windows XP laptop and a Mac.  I connect to the same VPN on both machines.  The Windows XP laptop will stay connected while the mac will drop the connection randomly.  This is particularly true when my Mac went to sleep and then wake up.
In my PPTP VPN setup, I have already uncheck the option "Disconnect when user logs out" option in the Advance setting.
Also, this appears to be Mac OSX issue because I have another client where I can use the Cisco AnyWhere VPN client to connect and the connection stays connected all the time including the time when my Mac went into sleep mode.
My mac is the new MacBook Pro with Retina display running Mountain Lion (The original OS is Lion and then upgraded to Mountain Lion) and I am using the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter to connect to my wire network.  It doesn't make much difference even if I switch over to a Wireless connection.  In both cases, the VPN just won't stay connected.
Can someone point me to the right direction as to where I can trouble shoot this please?  Thanks.

Thanks sberman.  In the article, it mentions something about VPN on Demand, where in the setup do you see this setup?  I am in the Network setup area and I am not finding this.  Also, if I turn on the "Use verbose loggin", where is the log file?  Is it still the /var/log/ppp.log file
Also, one more thing, my main ethernet connection setting does not include a proxy setting.  But my VPN setup includes a proxy setting.  Do you think that I may need to update the main ethernet setting to add the proxy setup to it as well? But I don't want to keep updating the main ethernet connection network setting to switch between proxy or not.  Any suggestion will be welcome.
    Thanks.

  • SOLVED! HP Officejet 6500A E710 will not stay connected to the network. scanner not connected

After 5 hours of live remote HP tech support, and 10 more hours of web searching, I am happy to say I have solved the wireless network connection issue with scanning and printing using the HP Officejet 6500A E710n-z.  I notice that there are a lot of people with similar issues with no common, successful fix.  Here is what worked for me.
    Background Info:
Upgraded internet service from 9Mbps to 27Mbps...Provider brought out new Arris DG860 modem/router.  Configured network and connected all clients (smart phones, PCs, Tablets, etc) successfully accept the printer.  With this new router/modem the printer/scanner/fax would not connect to my PC at all (Windows 7 64-bit).  The Officejet was always connected to the network, however, anytime I tried to print I would get an error "Unable to connect to the printer...", and when I made an attempt to scan.."Scanner not connected, make sure it is connected to the network..." blah blah blah.
    Process:
After searching the web for solutions with no success, I finally made my first call to HP tech support.  Tech tried numerous fixes: many network changes (channel, static IP, etc.), made changes to Windows system settings and registry, installed new software and drivers, ran the scan doctor, partial, semi, and full reset on the printer.  He changed my wifi channel to 6 (or 11) from AUTO and whola.  That seemed to fix the problem.  After hanging up the phone 10 minutes later "No connection" errors again.  Made a second call to HP Tech Support, and this new tech basically tried all the same fixes as the first tech.  Worked again for 10-15 minutes then disconnected.  Made third call to tech and this individual tried the same fixes as the previous two, but to no avail.  He said he would have to direct me to a more Advanced Technician and would call back tomorrow.  They called back the next day, and this new tech fixed the issue within 20 minutes.
    Problem/Solution:
The fourth "more advanced" tech made one change in my network configuration settings.  He changed my network mode from B/G/N to B/G and now the printer/scanner/fax stays connected and works like brand new.  The only problem is that all my devices (including the Officejet) are 802.11N capable.  Setting my network to the old B/G mixed mode slows my speed down just a bit.  Using B/G/N mode or N, my download speed is 27 Mbps.  On B/G mixed my speed is 25Mbps.  Not too big of a deal, though.  All the HP Support Techs were very nice and helpfull.  They refunded my $25 Tech fee [fee charged when product is out of warranty] because the problem is not "technically" solved, even though it does work.  Conclusio:  This seems to be an issue with my the modem/router provided by my ISP.  Could also be that it is an older Officejet and need to upgrade.    To Fix Follow the Steps Below:
Step 1:  Find your default gateway IP...usuall 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or similar.  Type this IP into your web address bar and hit enter.
Step 2:  Enter the username and password.  This is normally set at factory default --> username: admin ....passowrd: password .... or .... admin
Step 3: Go to the "Wireless Setup" tab and under the "Advanced Options" and "Wireless Network Settings" change the "Wireless Mode" to "B/G mixed".
Step 4:  Click "Apply" then close the browser.
You may, or may not, lose your wifi connection for a short period while the new settings are applied and you may, or may not, have to power cycle your modem/router.  That's it.  Worked for me and I hope it works for you too.  If you have any questions or comments please feel free to post.

OK, that all sounds right.  Here are a few more router config ideas:
    1. Make sure that 802.11g mode is available, along with others is OK, but 'g' must be present.
    2. Change the channel to 11.
    3. Use WPA or WPA/WPA2 encryption, not WPA2 only.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Please Help, My macbook won't stay connected to internet idk what to do

Hello, i just bought my macbook pro. Its a Mac OS X ver. 10.5.7 with a 2.26GHz processor.
    I have a Netgear 54mbps wireless router WGR614 v8 and a Motorola SB5100 SURFboard Cable modem.
Now the problem im having is with the internet connection with my mac. I live in Virginia and It was working before i went on vacation to tennessee which is an hour behind virginia. It was able to connect with no problems. It was also connecting fine in tennessee as well. But when i came back to Virginia, the mac would connect to my router or atleast say its connected but i can't use the internet at all. I would load either firefox, safari, or itunes store and the page would begin to load and then stop loading in the middle. As if it was freezing, dropping the connection or something. When i look through the airport connectivity, it would stay connected to my router with still no access to the internet. I also checked to make sure i was in the correct time zone with my mac and it was correct.I have a wii, xbox, original pc that are connected to router that operate perfectly. its just my macbook wont connect wirelessly when it used to before i went to tennesse and took it with me. Some of the error messages that i get when i try to use the internet via macbook now are "can't open page because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection" but then minutes later it would connect again, then internet would work. But shortly after it would stop working for a while. and the process continues like a cycle. PLEASE HELP BECAUSE IM CLUELESS. i've looked at many forums but no solution.

I've been having the same problem for the last 2 weeks, because it's a macbook air it's completely useless!
I spent a tenner on a usb/ethernet cable but it's not Mac Compatable, to buy an official one is going to cost ...god knows. But this machine comes with no superdrive, no ethernet, no adapter for an ethernet. The least they can do is make sure the wifi works! I think I upgraded the OS, but I can't be sure if that coincided with the crap internet speeds.
I'm really angry now, I don't have the time to take it down to shop, and looking on the internet it appears this is really common problem. It's a beautiful machine, but if I knew it was going to be this much hassle I wouldn't have bothered. This is the first and last time I will buy a mac.

  • My Macbook will not stay connected to the internet, while my Dell computer works fine. Why? What can I do?

My sister and I both have Macbook Pros that will not stay connected to our internet (wifi). Our dell computers and HP computers in the household work great- but both of the Macs do not stay connected, and often say "you are not connected to the internet". I have saved our wifi name to the computer so it is registered as our home network- but it still will not work fast or stay connected for long periods of time. Is there a setting I need to change, or anything I can do? Very disappointed with how the Mac works with our wifi.

Mac's will have trouble connecting to WEP Encrpyted and/or "hidden" / "invisible " networks.
OpenWEP (insecure) or WPA2(AES) is the only secure standard.
    ..WiFi, Internet problems, possible solutions
WiFi security issues, at home and WiFi hotspots
Also make sure the date and time are current and updating to Apple's servers for your location in System Preferneces > Date and Time. Then reboot and reconnect.
If your still having trouble after this, take both machines back to the store for a free evaluation.

  • Windows vista won't stay connected to airport extreme.

I have two computers connected to my airport extreme.  My mac stays connected without any problems, the pc laptop keeps disconnecting.  This problem only happens with the pc/airport extreme connection.  The pc will stay connected when a netgear router is being used.  Any suggestions (besides replacing the pc with a macbook, which I would love to do)?

Tesserax, the pc is in the same room with the airport router.  I haven't tried connecting to it with the ethernet cable.  I'll give that a try.
Dumb question...I can access the airport utility on the mac, but not on the pc (cuz I couldn't find it there).  Is there a way to find it on the pc?  Thanks for providing a path for me.  Here are those settings:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
    Radio Mode = Automatic
    Radio Channel Selection = Automatic
    Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal
AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Network Options
Use wide channels = checked or unchecked? Checked
Create a closed network = checked or unchecked? Unchecked
Use interference robustness = checked or unchecked? Don't see this on this page
    Internet > Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = ? Ethernet
Connection Sharing = ? Share a public IP address
    Internet > TCP/IP tab
    Configure IPv4 = ? Using DHCP

  • Ever since updating to IOS 6, my wifi has not been staying connected

This is applicable for my iPad and iPhone 4S. My iPhone doesn't connect to my home wifi at all and my iPad has issues staying connected. I never have these issues using my work place's free wifi for either device. At home I lose connection with my WiFi on my iPad on a regular basis while I'm using the device. I have to turn WiFi off and back on to reconnect and that usually works, but sometimes I simply can't connect to the internet at all even though my iPad shows it is connected to my WiFi. These issues were not happening prior to the update and not a single thing has changed with my wireless at home. No other devices (PCs and other smartphones) are having any issues with the internet at home, it is only my Apple devices.
Help! This is extremely annoying and inconvenient and I have tried different things with my internet (reserving IP addresses and devices) and it does not work.

    Try #5.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • Bizarre solution for OfficeJet Pro K5300 problem when Word docs hang in the print queue spooling

A bizarre solution to a spooling problem.
    Problem:
Word documents sent to an HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series printer hang in the print queue, saying “spooling”. They do not print, and cannot even be cancelled.
    Solution (Bizarre Solution).
The solution that worked for me was to rename the printer by removing the first space after “HP” in the printer’s name. When I did this, Word could then print to the printer. If the space is then re-inserted back into the printer-name then Word is still able to print!! I don’t know how, but it worked, and it worked on two separate installations! The full explanation is below with more options for testing that still need to be explored, or preferably explained by HP and or Microsoft.
First here is some background. My computer is an IBM NetVista 2.4GHz, P4. It has a 250GB HDD with lots of room and 2GB of RAM. My operating system is Win XP Pro with Service Pack 3. My anti-Virus in Trend Micro Internet Security 2009, updated regularly, (I turned it off while installing the printer software). I use Office Professional 97, with Office SP2b).
I bought a new HP Officejet Pro K5300 printer.
I installed the printer software, and followed HP’s directions strictly. I used the installation CD that was supplied by HP. My connection to the printer was USB.
The installation proceeded uneventfully and I printed a test page after it finished.
After that I printed a configuration page, then I printed a couple of photographs using Irfan View. The quality was great and I was pleased.
Then I tried to print a 2-page Word document, using Word 97, but nothing happened. No response from the printer, no error messages, just silence. I clicked on the printer icon on the task bar to look at the print queue and saw that my document was listed as “Spooling”, but it was not making any progress. I waited a couple of minutes but still no progress. I tried canceling it but it would not cancel/delete. The job on the queue would not respond to anything. I could not print it and I could not cancel it. The only way I could recover was to shut down Word, which flushed the queue and lost the job.
I tried this a few more times but with no success.
I did a Google search for this problem, and I found a few solutions. I tried them, but none worked. I checked HP’s website and found this problem listed, with some solutions from HP. I tried HP’s solutions, but they did not work either. In fact, when there was a Word document stuck “spooling” in the queue, HP’s diagnostic utility said that it could not even communicate with the printer, and suggested that my USB connection was bad. However, when I flushed the queue by shutting down Word, I could successfully send a Test Page to the printer, and I could print a detailed PDF from Adobe. So Word was the problem, not my USB connection.
After a pondering this problem over the next few days, and keeping in mind the fact that the default HP printer-name was “HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series”, I remembered that many years ago I could not get an Excel VB macro to select a printer, and print to it, if the printer-name had any spaces in it. I had noticed that the HP default printer name had 4 spaces in it, so I wondered what would happen if I renamed the printer by removing the spaces from its name.
So I renamed the printer to “HPOfficejetProK5300Series” (no spaces), and voila! Word could now print to it!
Then I wondered, if it was necessary to remove all of the spaces from the name, or just some of them, to get the printer to work, so I renamed the printer back to it’s default name in 4 stages, at each stage re-inserting one of the original spaces, and testing the printing. At each stage the printer kept successfully printing from Word, until I had re-inserted all four spaces and the printer’s name was back to being identical to the default name that it was installed with, but now it would print from Word on command.
So why was it that Word could not get the printer to print with the printer’s default installed name, but if I removed all of the spaces from the printer’s name, then re-inserted them, the printer would print from Word every time?
    So I did another test.
I uninstalled the entire printer software package and installed the updated Full Feature software package, filename “OJProK5X00_Full_8_3.exe”, 159MB download from HP.
After the package was installed, Word could NOT print to the printer, but other programs like Adobe PDF reader, and Irfan View, could print to it. I tried each software package about three times each, with consistent results.
I then renamed the printer, but this time I just removed the first space after the letters “HP”, i.e., I changed the printer’s name from “HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series” to “HPOfficejet Pro K5300 Series”. After I did that Word could then print to it. I then changed the printer’s name back to “HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series” by re-inserting the first space, and Word could still print to it now.
I challenge someone from HP to read this and explain why Word won’t print to this printer until I rename the printer by removing a space, but can still print to it after the space is re-inserted!
Of course, there is another alternative. Perhaps I could have renamed the printer by removing or changing any of the other characters, instead of the spaces. But each test involves completely uninstalling and re-installing the software, and I have better things to do with my time.
    This question was solved.

    What an amazing solution!
I recently purchased an HP Deskjet F4580 and had discovered that when using Word 97, it would print OK when using the Print icon but when trying to print using File->Print->choose page number or current page, Word would crash. Excel, Adobe etc would all print fine. I have spend many hours removing and then reloading the HP software and Office Professional software but this solution fixed the problem in a few minutes. PC is running XP Home SP3.
Just one thing I would add is that my computer has two accounts - one is the Computer Administrator account and the other is a Limited account. When I took out the space between HP and Deskjet so the printer became HPDeskjet F4500 series, I could then print from the Administrator account using either  the print icon or File->Print->choose page number or current page. When I switched to the Limited account, I would get the same crash when I tried File->Print->choose page number or current page (OK with icon). The Limited account mode does not allow the printer to be re-named.
I went back to Admin mode, re-classified the Limited account as a Computer Administrator account, logged on to this account and re-named the printer (in this case I took out another space so it became HPDeskjetF4500 series. Then it printed fine using the print icon or using File->Print->choose page number or current page. I then went back to the Computer Administrator account, re-named the printer to HPDeskjet F4500 and re-classified the second account back to Limited account mode. Now printing OK in both Computer Administrator account mode and Limited account mode.
    Thanks again!

  • Problem staying connected to my Wireless Network with my HPPhotosmart e-All-in-One Printer - D110a

I just bought a new HP wireless printer replacing my old HP wireless printer which the wireless part worked fine, but the printing died.
New printer HPPhotosmart e-All-in-One Printer - D110a. I have installed and re-installed the software and drivers but can't get my printer to stay connected to my laptop. I have a Linksys "WRT54GL router but have the printer set with a static IP address. When I run tests on the computer and printer everything says it is fine. But every 30 seconds or so.. my printer goes offline on my computer and is especially noticeable when I am using the HP Solution center because it will keep blinking in the windows bar. I have talked to 4 technicians but no one can figure out what the problem is. They keep saying that it is on my end, but the old printer which was also an HP (Wireless 6150) never had any problems and I have not changed anything in my routing. Is anyone else having this kind of problem and has found a successful solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My computer is running Windows XP SP3
Currently my router has WEP encryption, but I tried them all just to see if that had anything to do with it. (WEP works best for me since I have some devices which can only use WEP to communicate).
    Thanks.

Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). Yours is 192.18.1.100 to .149.  Let's use 192.168.1.200 for your printer.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway and first DNS. Leave the second one blank.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.
    I am employed by HP

  • Touch Generation 5 WiFi won't stay connected

I recently got a new 5th Generation iPod touch. I have a Netgear wireless adapter, and for some reason, when ever I reenter my house, I must restart my wireless so that my iPod can connect to it. However, now, my wireless will keep going out, and I will have to restart my wireless all of the time. Is there any way I can change my wireless settings, so that my iPod will stay connected? (my old 3rd generation had the same problem, but after i restarted the wireless once, it would stay  connected until I left the house).
    Thanks

So you're saying that it's only your phone that has the wifi problem? Like your friends are using the same wifi as you, but only you lose connection while they don't?
If that's the case, does the wifi have a passcode? And also some wifi networks have a verification before the wifi becomes accessible. For example, you may connect to a wifi network without having to put a password, but then you would need to open Safari and you would need to confirm some things before you're able to use it. Like in college, the wifi is free and open to everyone but only students who have a user and pass are able to access the wifi.
2nd possible solution is to reset your network settings. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. See if that works.
3rd, restart your phone by turning it on/off.
4th, restore your phone on iTunes.

  • WRT54G v.5 will not stay connected to new laptop/Windows 7 Premium

WRT54G v.5 will not stay connected to new laptop/Windows 7 Premium. It continuously runs through a cycle of detecting, connecting, losing connection; detecting, connecting, losing connection, etc. A the router runs through this cycle, basically acting as if I have disconnected then reconnected to power to reset it, it disrupts my Internet connection to both my wired iMac and other, wireless desktop upstairs. Paid for Linksys support today and through remote access he set up a new network on my desktop (iMac). After he finished, the problem still existed. When I told him the problem hadn't been fixed,  he told me just wait for an hour or so and it should work itself out. It, of course, did not work itself out. Any ideas out there?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Never mind-I seem to have fixed the problem with a simple firmware upgrade. Funny how the Linksys support technician didn't think to ask what version of the router I have or suggest that I should try upgrading the firmware first. He was, however, quite good at trying to upsell me to a new router instead of trying to help me fix the problem I was having. Makes me want to go buy Netgear next time, thank you very much!
