STILL LOOKING FOR A SOLUTION

This is my second try  at finding a solution. First though  an apology to fruhulda who  responded to my question this morning. Sorry I did not reply, but I was unable to find a way to start another message and have been unable to reload that page now. But I believe she asked what kind of equipment I am using, (The answer: iMac 4,1 . . . Intel Core Duo Processor  . . .OSx.4. and AppleWorks 6 (which came with my computer).
I also am now totally out of ideas for restoring  Appleworks (which really isn't even my favorite word processing  software). I prefer Word and InDesign for serious docs, but usually click on AppleWorks because it is so simple and convenient for  most quick  documents).
It had been working fine until yesterday morning when it suddenly refused to  start.Initially, I thought  I might have too many  open documents, so spent several hours  trying to complete and close as many Photoshop  projects as possible. Also checked my overall  storage capacity and  confirmed that probaby was not the problem either.
I then went on a hunt for all the  AW preference  files I could find . . .  and deleted com.apple.appleworks.plist in the preference folder  and all three files except the "button bars" in Library/Preferences/AppleWorks folder. Then following, Roger (W's) advice, Ideleted the contents of the 3 subfolders inside the 3 folders in the AppleWorks User Data. Actually did that so many times, I lsoy track of what I was doing, but  luckily had saved all those  deleted files inside the trash folder, without dumping it, thinking  that if necessary, I could always go back and  put them where I started. But by then, I was so confused and frustrated, I was no longer certain of where I found them, so just  put them in a new folder with n unrelated name and kid them away on my desktop, for now.
After that (or maybe along the way, I also  reloaded  AW multiple times from the original Apple disks; but that didn't work either. Considered  running Disk First Aid, but the disk I pulled out must have been from an earlier Mac, because it didn't work with the current system.
It feels like I've hit a brick wall, because I've run out of ideas. Have considered uninstalling and then reinstalling Appleworks, but am wondering if that might  worsen things (if possible).
The only shred of luck I've had all day after almost  pulling out every hair on my head) was managing to unlock the files I needed immediately (using Eext Edit and  Word. It's only Saturday, but it's already starting to feel like the "Lost Weekend." Can't remember  the last time I ran into  problem as frustrating as this one, btu  am guessing probably a couple of years. But I'm still hoping to solve it, so I can at least learn something from the experience.

Hi again, Peggy . . .
Hope you don’t think my delay in responding is a due to lack of appreciation of your efforts. Actually, it’s because of my difficulty in posting my responses. But with each delay I’ve also had an opportunity to re-examine all my  Mac disks and trace the history of Apple Works on my current  computer.
More importantly, it also enabled me to refresh my memory of the sequence of iMacs I’ve owned  in the past decade. With each new purchase, I’ve usually tried to keep the most recent Mac running on a local network — mainly in order to access original documents created with older software (such as Pagemaker) for clients.
Until I ran into the current problem with AW, I had completely forgotten  that my primary CPU in 2006 also was an iMac and that the cost of replacing its CD tray (which had failed unexpectedly) was my excuse for purchasing  my current dual processor Mac/intel, fortuitously just being introduced at that time.
in the switchover, I used firewire to transfer as many folders and individual documents as possible from the network—only realziing afterward that some were incompatible with the new operating system.
Sorting thru the various software iMac installation disks yesterday, I also realized that AW came from a set of iMac disks created in 2001 (so probably belonging to the cpu described above) . . . which included both OS 9;2 and 10.04 and a separate disk containing a bundle of third party applications. Although both the disk and its icon only refer to it as AppleWorks 6, File Information does identify it as AppleWorks 6.2 (i.e., not 6.2.4).
Aside from that discrepancy, the contents of the AW folders on my computer match all the constituent  parts on your screenshot. Also, while  it is not version 6.2.4 (the minimum requirement for running on Tiger and all later  oprating systems) it had been working trouble-free on my iMac since 2006, until it froze in its tracks  during the past weekend.
I have lost track of how many times I meticulously have followed the steps for removing  all the preference files; but AW still does not  boot up.
I also ran Disk First Aid, which found a pretty long list of errors when verifying permissions. But since they ALL applied only to my  printer (XEROX Phaser 8560) which never has operational problems, I chose to ignore theme.
Disk Utility stopped verifying iMac itself, because ” the underlying task reported failure on exit.”
The truncated report showed:

In general, problems like this one don't bother me. In fact, in some ways I enjoy the challenge, because  ultimately there's usually a lesson to be learned. But in this case, I'm starting to wonder if it's worth the time and effort, since I've always considered AppleWorks  just a convenience . . . not a feature-rich work horse, like  MS Word . ..or  InDesign, which is fully compatible with other Adobe apps.

  • Still looking for font solution

A problem I'm trying to get resolved:
I have some true type fonts. When I attempt to open their suitcase all it does is open font book and displays one version of the font.
I recall in earlier OSs you could click open the suitcase and view the font names and sizes within.
    Am I doing something wrong?
If I have 8 styles of a font do I need 8 suitcases, or is one enough? If one is enough does the suitcase have to include all the font styles inside, or is just one style enough?
    One other question:
QuarkXPress support claims that the printer fonts are missing in the fonts I've asked them to analyze.
However, these same fonts have printed normal on my inkjet and also at one of the print on demand printers. The fonts printed ok in RGB documents, but the same document printed in CMYK has the type substituted with courier.
PS: These same fonts have printed successfully in both RGB and CMYK in the past. The only difference that I can think of is that the document PDF files were created through Quark running OS 10.3. The errors began when I switched to OS 10.4. Could this be the cause, because if it is then how come the RGB PDFs created in OS 10.4 still print ok?
    Any ideas are welcomed.
    Thanks

    Frank,
I wondered what type of fonts you were using and your query is a bit telling. Briefly…
TrueType fonts: both the screen and printer fonts for all styles are wrapped in one document.
PostScript fonts: Generally, a typeface has one screen font document with the various styles and separate documents for each printer font file as a vector drawing. If the typeface has many styles, e.g., light, roman, book, heavy, demibold, bold, extra bold, etc. then the manufacturer may create a few screen font documents.
Here’s an Apple doc about Font Formats
Although, Apple, Microsoft and other organizations say that the two type formats can work together in OS X, in my experience, TrueType fonts are trouble in Quark XPress documents. I do not have the expertise to explain the technical aspects, but Quark is a graphics application different from a wordprocess application. Printing Quark docs goes through a raster imaging process and many non-postscript printers can “emulate” postscript but they are not true PostScript. For example, kerned text may not print the same if different types of fonts are used. Some TrueType fonts may have the same name as PostScript fonts which can create a conflict as to which one the printer uses. I am not sure how ID numbers are assigned to truetype fonts. I think that each postscript printer font has its own ID number.
To learn more about fonts, Kurt Lang has great information on Font Management.
A couple of things you might do are: (a) check for duplicate fonts with your font management application, e.g., Font Book, Suitcase, FontExplorer etc. and (b) clear your font cache with Font Finagler or Font Nuke.
With respect to your document having RGB and CMYK images…generally, in the “high-end” lithography industry, all color photos have to be CMYK because those are printing press ink colors. RGB are not ink colors. So, I wonder if when the Quark PDF converter identifies a CMYK image, it then expects to find either a postscript or opentype font and when it does NOT it substitutes…

  • I'm still looking for a solution for contrast for the back arrow and the "x" that does not light up unless I roll my cursor across it.

I have asked this question a couple of weeks ago and have not received any suggestions on how to change it. My back arrow is the same color as the box it resides in, they are both black. The "x" in the tab section does not show until I roll my cursor over it. I would like to know how to change the colors in those areas
I do have a laptop and it has plenty of contrast in those areas.
    Thanks

Apple seems to be naming their operating sytems usability based on the respective turd size of the feline in question. Lions are big, very, very, very big.
I had a system that served me well for 2 years until I mistaking bought a new machine which runs mega-turd (Lion). Foolish me, now nothing works properly, its a daily struggle to get anything working smoothly using my NEW mac mini. All my other machines work fine, even the windows machines and my Android tablet see all the network components and can talk to each other.
My Internet service is over 3g which I share to the house using internet sharing via my brand new €800 mac mini running POS Lion, everytime the service is interrupted, Kaboom, the mini resets the DHCP server, but doesn't seem to refresh any of the components so connections drop everywhere.
Its amateur hour at Apple folks.
There are several posts alone relating to internet sharing, I have submitted a bug report relating to the non user controllable DHCP server (which may be at fault), but the response / solution from Apple was lacklustre and ultimately didn't work.
    See this, there are some work around's in there;

  • Itunes launches fine however I cannot connect to the Itunes store.  It says that Itunes has stopped working and windows is looking for a solution.

Everything seems fine until I try to access the ITunes store.  Then I get a message that ITunes has stopped working and that Windows is looking for a solution.  Then it tells me that no solution has been found and closes down Itunes.
I can still sync music / podcasts to my ipod and iphone.  I am still getting podcast downloads automatically for the ones I have subscribed to.
This is the first time this issue with not being able to access the Itune stores has happened to me.  I was just there 2 nights ago.

I've had this problem too. Only way I know is either use smart play lists or rebuild your play lists from scratch
If anybody else has a solution or a program that can resolve this it would be great.

What type of troubleshooting were we able to do with you? I want to make sure that we can get some sort of resolution for this problem.
It is quite possible the battery door may get your phone in working order again. I'm not sure if the store has it in stock, but it is available in our warehouse for $14.99 which can be ordered via customer service.

From the Premiere Elements Information FAQ http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1042180
•You MUST use an account with Administrator Privileges to run Premiere Elements
•(Doing Run as Administrator http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395 [says Encore and also for "All" versions of Premiere] will sometimes fix "odd" errors)
•What version of Premiere Elements? Include the minor version number (e.g., Premiere Elements 12 with the 12.1 update)
•What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.9.4"---not just "Mac"
•Has this ever worked before?  If so, do you recall any changes you made to Premiere Elements, such as adding Plug-ins, brushes, etc.?  Did you make any changes to your system, such as updating hardware, printers or drivers; or installing/uninstalling any programs?
•Have you installed any recent program or OS updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
•What kind(s) of image file(s)? When talking about camera raw files, include the model of camera.
•If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?

  • I'm getting popup notices that Firefox has a problem, and Windows is looking for a solution; then it closes Firefox and says Windows will let me know if it finds a solution. No crash report window comes up.

Firefox is my default browser on my new laptop, with OS Windows 7. I've now had several instances where a Windows popup comes up saying Firefox has developed a problem and may have to close. It also indicates Windows "is looking for a solution to the problem." No solution is found, however, and Firefox is forced to close, with the happy notice that Windows will let me know if it finds a solution to the problem. If there is any tech data on the crash, I'm not sure where to find it, and no Firefox crash report window comes up. I thought it was an anomaly the first time, but this has now occurred at least 4 times in the past several days.

    Hi,
The reason that you are getting the ! is because iTunes is still looking for the music on your external hard drive.
You need to create a new library iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
Now turn on iTunes Match and select add this computer. You will now see all your music in the cloud. When you want to add new music, revert to the original library on your external hard drive.

  • Looking for a solution or service to export data from a dynamic form into a database

As the title of this discussion states, I'm looking for a solution or service to export data from a dynamic form into a database to be used for reporting. Creating the dynamic form is not a problem, it's getting it into a database that's more of a nuisance. A dynamic form is needed in order to provide skip logic, hide/reveal, and other similar dynamic features.
The database hasn't been created, so just looking for the easiest, more effective and dependable solution. The key is being able to run reports off the data later.

So i set up 2 residential grade routers to test this out. Seems to be working okayish. I believe with directional antenae routers I should achieve what I need.
As for security I configured each device separately. I set them so only allow the MAC address of the other through wireless. This seems to be the best system for me. Once they are connected even if a MAC is spoofed of the other router it drops automatically because they are always connected. My wired devices get plugged in and recieve an IP from my main network.
There more testing to be done, but it seems to be working.
Thanks for your input and suggestions guys. I will be marking this topic as answered.
