Stop capture, Save clip

Is there no way to stop a capture, yet still preserve what has already been captured?
Okay, say you've typed in your in and out points. You're capturing along, have an hour and a half of footage captured, and suddenly you see that you've mistyped a number, and you're going to be capturing 2 more extra hours. (I’m exaggerating a bit.)
Pressing esc cancels the capture and throws away that hour and a half of footage you really did want to capture. (And that actual hour and a half of precious time.)
Is there a way to save it, and not keep capturing?
Am I just stupid, or is FCP?
Thanks

No, you cannot abort the capture and save what has been captured when you've logged such a big chunk. If you have to capture your footage without logging it into individual clips, it's best to log smaller chunks, in order to avoid such a scenario as you mentioned below. If you've got a 3-hour tape it really wouldn't take that long to zip through it and set some INS and OUTS, breaking it up into smaller chunks.
And in addition to avoiding losing valuable time having to abort a long capture, FCP handles smaller clip durations better anyway, so your project will run more smoothly once you've got everything captured.
I realize of course sometimes it's necessary to capture an entire tape at once, but if you can, there are lots of benefits to logging your stuff in more detail right from the get-go.
Hope this helps,
Joni

• Why can I no longer capture DV clips?

I can no longer capture DV clips that are useable. Is it a wrong setting or maybe bad hardware?
I'm logging and capturing clips as DV anamorphic (downconverted by my deck from HDV), and when I play back the captured clip, the image in the viewer isn't moving (at least not very much; a series of freeze frames, really). When I expand the browser window, I notice that the data transfer rate for the clip is only around 300 k/sec, whereas previously capture DV clips weigh in at 3.6 MB/sec. I know 300 k/sec is around the rate for RT Offline clips - but there is no evidence that the offending clips are RT Offlined. I've spent ten hours in the program and in the manual, trying to figure out how to correct this.
I also opened the captured clips in QuickTime, and then used "Movie Inspector" to determine that the clips as captured are bad; in other words, it's not just a playback problem. A healthy DV clip reads out at 30.31 mbits/sec; my bad clips are reading 2304 kbits/sec, or 2805 kbits/sec, etc. The FPS for the problem clips read 0.81, 1.20, etc., whereas the healthy DV clips read, of course, 29.97.
Oh, here are some other peculiarities: it takes longer than usual to complete the capture -- 10 seconds or so past the end timecode reading. And it always gives me the warning that there was broken time code in the sequence. And, it appears that audio track 2 is out of sync -- a several seconds later than audio track 1.
And recently, there's variation to the problem, where the first couple of seconds of the captured clip are a series of quick freeze frames; then, the rest of the clip is entirely black, with only the audio apparent.
I'm beginning to think it may be a hardware issue. It's not the deck, or the firewire cable, or the firewire port. I've switch them all out with the same result. I've trashed FCPro preferences and then reset them, with no improvement. I even reformatted by drive, re-installed the OS, and installed a different version of FCPRO. Same results
Any ideas?

Sorry for any inconvenience; I'm new to the discussion process. And sorry for the delay in responding; I've been away and unable to follow through.
I'm still having the same problem.
I've tried two decks: Sony HDV HVR-M25U in downconvert mode; JVC BR-DV600U. Plus, I've tried my camera, Sony Z1U, also in downconvert mode.
The only other devices on the firewire bus are firewire hard drives -- essential to the operation.
I've tried Mac OSX 10.4.6 and Mac OSX 10.4.10. I've tried FCPRO versions 5 and 6.
It did not stop working after any updates or change in software.
I reset the capture to Easy Preset for DV with no success.
I didn't trash the preferences; but I did erase the disc and completely re-install the software -- twice.
My G5 does do one other strange thing. If I have the computer "sleep" mode activated, and the computer goes to sleep -- I can't wake it up for a couple of hours. I think that's a heat-related thing; this is the G5 that has 7 fans (or is it 9?). And I hear you can't start G5s if the sensors decide one of the processors is over-heated. If I shut off the computer, the same thing happens; I have to wait a couple of hours. My present workaround is that I just leave the computer on all day (deactivate the "sleep" option), and it seems to work fine -- unless this capture problem is somehow related.
I'm going to try to capture DV footage using iMovie -- once I get my hands on a version that works with Tiger. This might indicate whether this problem is software-or-hardware based. I'll update this message thread once I've been able to do this test.
Thanks for any further thoughts you might have!

• FCP 6.0.2 - Capture Successful - Clips not saved! Help!

I'm running FCP 6.0.2 on OS X 10.4.11
I have a Sony HDR-FX1 camera and do most of my filming in SD DV.
I'm trying to capture footage on several tapes (about an hour per tape) using the Log and Capture method. The camera is plugged into my front firewire port. I've logged the tapes (as 1 hour clips) and have tried doing a batch capture several times.
Here's the problem:
The clip is captured for the entire hour and I'm presented with the message that the capture was successful. I proceed to click "Finish" and my clip stills shows as "offline" in the final cut pro browser. Also, when I look in my FCP "Capture Scratch" folder, the respective project folder is completely empty.
In other words, FCP is not saving my captured clips for some reason.
I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have and am willing to try anything at this point!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah - oddly enough, I don't run into this problem with shorter clips - just captured one that was 30 minutes long. But I really don't want to split these long clips up - it's easier to sync up the multiple angles when I'm dealing with clips that are all the same length.
You would think that if FCP encountered a problem while capturing these clips, it would give me some sort of warning - but no, it says successfully captured and then just doesn't save the darn clips! So frustrating to sit here for an hour watching it capture and have nothing to show for it. It's failed 8 times so far (that's 8 hours I'll never get back!)

• Automator Stop Capture error

I was trying to make a screen capture service, but have been hitting errors in the Start Capture and Save Capture actions. I tried to make a service as simple as New Screen Capture > Wait for User Action > Stop Capture, but it gives me an error on the Stop Capture action (even though it does stop the recording). The error just says "can't make missing value into type alias."

• Can't Stop Capturing and Files Have no Audio

Once a tape has finished capturing, the only way I can close OL is through the task manager or by starting a new tape.  I have captured every tape the exact same way, and out of 5 tapes, 3 have video only, 1 is a corrupted file, and 1 captured correctly.  I can only import the clip that has working audio and video into Premiere or SoundBooth—none of the others work; they just sit and (don't) import for hours.  All the files have sizes that suggest the audio is taking up space, but it will not play or import into a timeline.
VLC will only play one of the files.  It has a thumbnail but no audio.
I tested each tape to see if it would capture correctly, so I recorded 15 seconds and clicked stop (because it will allow me to stop if the tape is not over yet), and then I played the captured file, and they always had audio.  When I do the entire tape, however, only rarely does the audio stay intact.
What do I DO?

Wow. I just started using CS5OL and immediately ran into the same problem you described.  Sorry you had to wait for almost a year for a reply.
I have a SONY D8 tape player/recorder and a SONY HDV tape player connected to W7 PC via DV link (firewire).  OL crashes if you try to STOP recording when being feed "bad" video ... ie area on tape passed recorded video.
Since this appears to be an OL "bug" I can only offer you the work around that works for me.  Your mileage may vary.
When OL is in record mode and the video on the tape "runs out" (tape runs passed end of recorded material)... if I click STOP in OL, it freezes and then quits.
When I try to reload OL, it (warning ... assumptions ahead) "tries" to go straight to the previously opened project (even if you have prompt to ask at start up) and then freezes.  Apparently, OL "thinks" the start up prompt is displayed and waits for you to do something.  Only problem is, the prompt is not displayed and OL just boinks at you.  A visit to the Task Manager is the only way to kill OL.
The weird thing is, if you rename the project file or folder that you had open when the crash occured ... the restart of OL does show the start up prompt as normal.  The other weird thing is that the clip that was being recorded during the crash apparently gets left "open" and is not properly closed.
If you revisit the video clip file, only the video is there ... no audio.  Weird!
The work around.  While recording and the tape player video runs passed the end of recorded video ... I simply press the review (rewind while playing) button on the player to rewind the tape back to "good" video.  Once the player starts playing the "good" video again ... then click STOP in OL and it should close the clip properly.
In a nut shell, you can only STOP recording when OL is being feed "good" video.  It will crash 100% of the time (my un-success rate) if you hit STOP or RECORD if being feed "bad" video.
In summary, when your tape plays passed the end of recorded material .... DON'T TOUCH OL!!!   Simply rewind the tape back to "good" video and allow to play.  Then press STOP.   Your clip may have a big clunky section at the end but that's why they invented video editors ... isn't it.
I hope this helps.  Dave

• Tape batch capture TC clip list

Does this software allow be to enter a list of clips with their time code start and stop and the computer then takes control of my tape camcorder and just captures
what clips I want?

You could try this:
http://sight-creations.com/free_stuff/timecodeClock3.zip
You can get specific details about it here:
http://fx.svbtle.com/timecode-clock-3
It's a simple generator of 1 minute length that was built completely apart from the "built in" timecode generator which gets "hijacked" by FCPX no matter what. If you need more than one minute, you have the option of dragging out the generator to length keyframing the time changes at each minute (not recommended) or option drag a duplicate of the first instance (already set) and updating the start time of the next instance (much easier.) Cut whatever you don't need off the last instance.
This generator does not do real drop-frame, but you can change the last colon to a semicolon if you need it to look like drop-frame (not that anyone can really tell while it's running ) You can also modify this effect to be a simple clock (with 24-hr, 12-hr and 12-hr with PM marker options.)

• How can I capture film clips from my Canon FS200 camcorder into my computer?

I've captured film clips from my Canon FS200 camcorder before so you can understand how frustrated I now feel not being able to do it today. I have just one 30-second clip on the memory card. It plays on my camcorder but I cannot transfer the clip to my computer.
I have an HP desktop computer that's two years old with plenty of hard drive space. I've tried capturing using the memory card inserted into the computer and I've tried using the USB2.0 port. Nothing works anymore. I used to capture with ease using Windows Movie Maker or Photo Gallery.
In the past when the capture was successful I would import the clips into Magix Edit Pro 16 for editing. I could never capture directly into this program though. I hope someone can help me out.

In Windows Movie Maker and Photo Gallery I click on Import From Device or Import Photos and Videos. A box appears but it is empty. The message above the box is, "if you do not see your device..." click Refresh. Refresh doesn't do it.
When I try to import with Magix Edit Pro 16 (a German video editing program) I get the message: "Magix could not connect to selected device."
I have run out of options. I don't know what else to do. This Friday I'm going to do some filming at a ballroom dance but I'm pessimistic about being able to capture the raw video to my computer.
This is an edit later in the day. Now I can capture into Photo Gallery and then into Windows Movie Maker or Magix. But I can only do this with the USB 2.0 connection. When I put the memory card into the computer slot, nothing happens. It used to work. Anyway, I'm glad I can finally do some practice editing again. I'm just in the learning stage with anything graphic.

• Capturing multiple clips from one mini dv tape

i have been having trouble using the 'capture project' option. i can capture individual clips, but would like to set them all before hand and have the computer go through and capture them all at once. this seems to be possible, but when i click 'capture project' it either only captures the first clip or reads 'error'. any suggestions?

Hi(Bonjour)!
You cannot capture project with this method in FCE, it's not suported.
See page 179 and 181 of user's manual.
You can capture now all your tape (or portion with the esc key), and recapture a project (from a previously captured but now erased media). See page 189.
Each clip that is logged in capture window is captured right after you set the in and out points. One clip at a time.
Final Cut Pro can meets your needs.
If your problem is to recapture a project, it seems that there is a time code break on your DV tape, thus the error.
Note that HDV cannot be recaptured.

• OGG for SQL Server - Extract stops capturing - Bug?

Hi, all,
I've found a problem with OGG for SQL Server where the Extract stops capturing data after the transaction log is backed up. I've looked for ways to reconfigure OGG to avoid the problem but couldn't find any reference to options to workaround this problem. It seems to be a bug to me.
My Extract configuration is as follows:
EXTRACT ext1
SOURCEDB mssql1
TRANLOGOPTIONS NOMANAGESECONDARYTRUNCATIONPOINT
EOFDELAY 60
EXTTRAIL dirdat/e1
TABLE dbo.TestTable;
I'm using the EOFDELAY parameter for testing purposes only, since it's easy to reproduce the scenario that causes the issue when the extract polling is configured with longer intervals.
When the Transaction Log backup runs, SQL Server marks all the virtual logs that are older than the primary and secondary truncation points as inactive (status = 0). These virtual logs can then be reused if required. They still contain change records, though, and OGG can read from then if required, before they are overwritten. This situation will never occur if we are not using SQL Replication and have the Extract configured with the parameter MANAGESECONDARYTRUNCATIONPOINT.
However, I'm trying to simulate a scenario where OGG is used along SQL Replication and the extract is configured with the NOMANAGESECONDARYTRUNCATIONPOINT option. The situation that I've reproduced and caused the Extract to stop capturing is the follow sequence of events:
1. Extract reads transaction log and capture change up to LSN X
2. More change are made to the database and the LSN is incremented
3. Log Reader reads Transaction Log, captures changes up to LSN X+Y and advances the secondary truncation point to that LSN
4. A transaction log occurs, backs up all the active virtual logs, advances the primary truncation point to a LSN greater than LSN X+Y, and marks all the virtual logs with LSNs <= X+Y as inactive (status = 0)
5. Changes continue to happen in the database consuming all the available inactive virtual logs and overwriting them.
6. The extract wakes up again to capture more changes.
At this point, the changes between LSNs X and X+Y are not in the Transaction Log anymore, but are available in the backups. From what I understood in the documentation the Extract should detect that situation and retrieve the changes from the Transaction Log backups. This, however, is not happening and the Extract becomes stuck. It still pools the transaction log at the configured interval query the log state with DBCC LOGINFO, but doesn't move forward anymore.
If I stop and restart the Extract I can see from the trace that it does the right thing upon startup. It realises that it requires information that's missing from the logs, query MSDB for the available backups, and mine the backups to get the required LSNs.
I would've thought the Extract should do the same during normal operation, without the need for a restart.
Is this a bug or the normal operation of the Extract? Is there a way to configure it to avoid this situation without using NOMANAGESECONDARYTRUNCATIONPOINT?
The following is the state of the Extract once it gets stuck. The last replicated change occurred at 2012-07-09 12:46:50.370000. All the changes after that, and there are many, were not captured until I restarted the Extract.

It might be something simple (or maybe not); but the best/fastest way to troubleshoot this would be to have Oracle (GoldenGate) support review your configuration. There are a number of critical steps required to allow GG to interoperate with MS's capture API. (I doubt this is it, but is your TranLogOptions on one line? It looks like you have it on two , the way it's formatted here.)
Anyway, GG support has seen it all, and can probably wrap this up quickly. (And if it was something simple -- or even a bug -- do post back here & maybe someone else can benefit from the solution.)
Perhaps someone else will be able to provide a better answer, but for the most part troubleshooting this (ie, sql server) via forum tends to be a bit like doing brain surgery blindfolded.

• IPod Touch 2.2.1 Stopped Streaming Quicktime Clips

Hello,
I searched and couldn't find any info on why my iPod Touch 2G stopped streaming quicktime clips from the site drummerworld.com.
This has not been an issue until recently, and now I just get a strange icon rather than a clip playing. Any info would be great as I visit this site quite often for tips and such.
Since it is tied to the OS you are running, you really don't have any control over which version of Quicktime you are running.
Ok, I'm running v 7.6 which is the same as the site.
Perhaps the site has changed something ? This is strange because it worked for the first few weeks.

• Need to capture video clip from local news story site.

Does anyone know of a way to capture video clip from an online source for adding to iMovie.
The clip I would like to get is a piece done locally and added to a local news site.

Video on the web can be in many forms - most of which aren't easy to download.
What I do, is use SnapzProX from http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/
This lets you capture video (and audio) from your computer screen.
I have seen FLVR mentioned as a way to capture Flash video, but haven't tried it yet. ( http://www.tastyapps.com )
To get the best quality, you can probably buy a tape of the clip from the station at a 'reasonable' price.

• How to see the captured video clips in finder?

The project file is like a folder, where the capture video clips are inside, but how to open the folder to use captured clips in Final Cut Express?

Thanks!
I found another way too, to do it: ctrl + click the project icon and choose from the menu "Show package content" which opens the folder that looks similar to earlier iMovie folders with Media and cache folders.
