Stop JList from jumping when Alpha key pressed.

Question

I have a list that I have a KeyListener on. I want to trap the keypresses and handle them myself. Not a big problem, but the one thing that I cannot seem to control is that when you press the "K" key it automatically jumps to the first "K" item in the list as well as any other alphabetic key on the keyboard. I am calling evt.consume() in the keyTyped, keyPressed, & keyReleased methods, but it is still jumping. How do I turn this behavior off?

Replace the combo's keySelectionManager with one that never finds a match:
    comboBox.setKeySelectionManager(new JComboBox.KeySelectionManager() {
        public int selectionForKey(char c, ComboBoxModel model) {
             return -1;
