Strange animation on boot

Hi guys,
I use LightDM as my Login Manager with Cinnamon.
I have this strange issue where just before LightDM loads i get a grey background with a spinning wheel?
I have a video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQNERl-sOl0
It only lasts for a couple of seconds but id like to know what the hell it is!
I can't find anything responsible for it.
Here is a list of everything that is enabled on boot -

Thanks for getting back to me
Disabling LighDM and running via xinitrc get's rid of it.
Although for some reason using xinitrc Cinnamon will only load into software rendering mode?
So this must be something caused by LightDM?

  • MacBook pro Extremely long booting time After 10.10.1 + strange icons when booting

    Hi all,
since the Yosemite update and the sequential patch, I've been experiencing lots and lots of issues with this releade
    I posses a
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
    2,5 GHz Intel Core i5
After a week after the Yosemite update my Mac just froze, and for a couple of days I was unable to access it. after 4 attempts of Clean install i was finally able to restore it. but the issue with long booting time and free after sleep/wake action are the same .
I'm experiencing strange icons during boot as follows:
Only after a second reboot and clearing ram with Cmd+Alt+P+R i'm able to get rid of this , and the reboot shows this
That after 5 mins changes into this
This routine keeps happening, every single time i have to restart my mac.
    Any suggestions?
    tnks

Well , i guess i a HDD issue, when i was experiencing the initial issues with yosemite , I've installed the system an external Hdd and everything was working fine.
So i guess my suspicions were correct. I have to change my hdd.

  • Strange message while booting up.

I get this message while booting and am wondering if anyone knows how to correct the problem.
Not activating Mandatory Access Control now since /sbin/tomoyo-init doesn't exist.
I haven't found any solutions or much explanation of what it is using google.

When I read the message I felt brave enough to try installing this mysterious tomoyo-tools, system boots fine like I didn't have it and it's happened about for a week. I forgot to have installed that.
Today my machine have had strange message and didn't boot, I've tried the fallback and the first time has worked. From fallback I have reinstalled tomoyo-tools, thinking some upgrade could have broken the package.
Well, reboot the machine and system still not booting, neither fallback this time. WTH!
I've used the livecd to move the binary /sbin/tomoyo-init (yes of course I can chroot and pacman -R but moving the binary was enough), booting correctly and pacman -R it.
The last message written was about kernel start etc, and the system stuck.

  • Strange noises and booting issues

    Hi,
My MacBook froze up this afternoon and started making strange clicking noises that sounded like someone typing on a computer. Because all my applications were completely frozen, I went to reboot, but now it is stuck on the loading screen. Is this because I have a CD in the CD drive and it is trying to boot from that? If so how do I get it out?

Sounds like your hard drive may have failed. Try booting from the Mac OS X installation DVD that came with your system (hold down keyboard "c" key during startup), then run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu before actually beginning the OS X install process.
If you have a non-startup DVD stuck in the optical drive, just hold down the keyboard eject button during startup to eject it.

  • Strange graphic when booting up iMac with OS X  10.8.5

We just purchased a used iMac with following specs: OSX 10.8.5, 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB memory. After installing some software, I was rebooting system. When I did, a strange graphic (not the Apple startup graphic) came onto the screen (moving image). Hard to describe - looks sort of like the 'test pattern' graphic. Nothing booted up while it was showing. I had to force quit the system. I powered up again, and all was fine. What does this mean?

I tried compiling 2.6.27.1 and using this new vmlinuz and kernel img (made `oldconfig` from newest livecd /proc/config.gz) , but problem persists. Is it somehow related to I8042 controller? I've set CONFIG_SERIO_I8042=y.

What do these errors mean and where do they come from? Is it the hardware of some

Someone suggested to me that my partition table is either incorrect, or my filesystems don't match the partitions I created (this happens when you re-partition your disk, but don't re-read your partition table for example):
    sda: rw=0, want=1953536123, limit=976773168
attempt to access beyond end of device
That can be because when I installed Arch on my new machine with the fakeraid (dmraid & RAID 0) I created the partitions with cfdisk via the installer. After setting them up and everything I wrote the table and cfdisk gave the warning (partition table created but could not re-read the table). Is there a way to fix this?
    Regards
    André

your system freezes or it boots anyway ?
if it freezes, I dont know what is the problem
if it boots anyway, the error is because the partition sda3 is beyond the end of sda :
RAID0 stripes data on both disk (sda and sdb on your system I guess)
but the primary partition table is only on sda (check your /dev, you should have sda, sda1, sda2, sda3 and sda4, but only sdb)
you have on your sda (which is 500GB) a partition table for a 1000GB disk
so, if some of your primary partitions are beyond 500GB (partly or entierly), it complains that their are beyond the end of the drive while setting sda
I don't know any way to fix this, except limiting primary partition's total size to 500GB (logical partitions on sda are not set, so they don't trigger this error)
you can safely ignore this error since you never access sda (and you should never access it)
PS: sorry for my English if something is not correct

  • [Laptop] Strange messages at boot - Faulty HDD?

Could someone take a look at this? Thanks in advance.

Do you have your backup up-to-date?
Check your HD smart status and see if anything is failing. I would say check the sata cable but since it is a laptop there is no cable.
If it happens again I might say either the disk is developing some problem or the sata connector on the motherboard or the motherboard itself might be developing some problem. If your laptop is a few years old I'd start doing regular backups just in case.
    Edit:
After a closer look it seems you may be right, the problem seems to come from the cdvd drive and not the hard disk. Keeping an eye on the hd smart status and doing regular backups is still a good idea though.

  • Strange animation behavior

Hi guys, I am a beginner at After Effects and I am having some issues with my project. I've been playing with some 3D camera animation but for some reason, my particles layer retains the camera effects even if I remove them from the camera transform pane. There is no animation set for the particles layer and I press the RAM preview button and the animation keeps running on this layer. It is driving me crazy and I can't even think on how search for this on Google, you guys are my only hope! PS.: I am using a Null Object for the camera control.

Try using Edit>Purge>All. If that doesn't fix it open up preferences and clear out your disk cache. If that doesn't help then you've got to tell us a lot more about your comp must tell us more about your composition, more about your particle effects, and more about your computer. Without more information we're just shooting in the dark.

  • Strange noise on boot up

From about 6 weeks ago every time ive turned on my macbook i get this weird clicking noise and it lasts until the desktop. Sounds like a disc spinning or something. I phoned apple this morning and the guy told me to take out battery, hold power button, replace battery, and then switch on. It stopped. And he said he would send an email with what to do if it happens in future, and that it would cost 35£ a call in future! So when i turn on my mac tonight, it happens again, only slightly louder and now runs over into desktop screen for another 30 secs or so. This is a refurbed mac and i got it 7 months ago. Ive upgraded the ram, but that was 6 months ago, and it did not happen after a firmware or software update. when i push down with fingers on the joint connecting the screen to the mac it stops until i release them??!! Anyone know what i can do?

Your MacBook is still under warranty if you purchased the refurb from Apple. If you have an Apple store nearby, bring it to them and have them take a look. You should not be charged for any hardware related calls you make. The only support calls they should charge for are calls like "How do I download music to iTunes"... and things like that.

  • [SOLVED] Booting windows 7 kills Arch

    Hi,
I'm dual booting Arch with windows 7 and recently when I boot windows 7, I can't boot Arch afterwards.
After I shutdown windows, I start up my laptop again, I get the grub menu and select Arch. During boot I get a lot of output during the file system check ( I think, it's hard to see because it goes to fast; ) and then Arch freezes. The only thing that I can do is a force shut down with the power button. I boot again and launch the Arch Fallback kernel. That one is then able to boot but freezes when kdm is launched: I get the login screen for tty 1 but when the graphical login managers fires up I only get a black screen and everything freezes ( can't switch to a terminal or use ctrl+alt+backspace ). I have to force shutdown with the power button again. I boot up again, select the Fallback kernel again and everything works fine. After that I can boot with the normal Arch kernel without a problem.
Is there a way to log the output on the screen during boot up ? I've searched the logs in /var/log/ but can't find that output.
This only happens since yesterday. I was looking for CPU scaling modules and loaded the powernow-k8 module according to the wiki. The power manager of KDE needed additional modules, KDE loaded the modules itself and I put all the modules in /etc/rc.conf. Strange thing is that I also lost my wifi yesterday and it still doesn't work, not on Arch nor Windows ( Wired internet does work on both ).
While checking the the daemon.log I found this, don't know if it's really helpfull:

I had windows vista and windows 7 in dual boot with Mandriva linux for a year without any problem and right now I have absolutely no idea what's going on.
    EDIT:
Tried it again to see if I could get some more information.
Apparently the first time I boot Arch after a windows boot, it doesn't really freeze. I tried to write down some of the output and after a while it continued for a second and stopped again and this went going on and on. It seems like it keeps looping the same output. I waited some more but I had to force shut down because my laptop was going nuts and overheating, it started to smell like burned electronics...
I was able to capture some of the output:
    --[end trace 27ebd855... ]---
    Call trace
    [<ffffffff8117c420>] ? proc_lookup_de+0x20/0x100
    [<ffffffff81009ec2>] ? system_call_fastpath
Code ff .. .. .. and a lot more of pairs of letters and numbers
The output at the beginning was to fast to see but the Call trace and Code kept on repeating.
After this I could boot up the Fallback kernel without a problem, kdm worked fine to, then rebooted using the normal kernel image like nothing happened before.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Varg

Well since it worked fine first it could only be the powernow-k8 module or the CPU scaling modules required by KDE. I'll check it out and report back.
    EDIT:
Narrowed it down to the cpufreq_powersave and cpufreq_userspace modules. Powernow-k8, cpufreq_stats and cpufreq_ondemand work fine.
I disabled all the modules and then turned them back on one by one in rc.conf ( booting w7 everytime ). cpufreq_powersave turned on gave the strange output during boot but only a short version but completely ran down X or kdm after boot. With cpufreq_userspace I could boot but KDE froze right after login. Combination of the two modules resulted in being unable to boot.
Loading the modules after boot while running KDE gives no problem and since I'm a laptop user I could use the powersave module. I'll see if I can make KDE load that module automatically after login.
Thanks a lot for the tip !
