Strange behaviour of a panel in InDesign CS6

I am currently developing a panel running on InDesign CS5, CS5.5 and CS6. For some internal specific reason, the panel (of type csxs:CSXSWindowedApplication) has its visible property set to false; in its "Lifecycle", the autovisible is unselected and the panel starts on event "applicationActivate".
This way the panel works as I am expecting, at least on CS5 and CS5.5; unfortunately this is not happening under InDesign CS6. The best way to explain what I am obtaining (expected or not) is by running a ExtensionBuilder 2.0 existing demo project. The example I am talking about is the "CSXSWindowedAppDemo" project. After having imported it, the visible property of the CSXSWindowedApplication must be added and set to false on the "main.mxml" file.
Then, some adjustment must be done by ctrl-clicking the project and selecting the "CS Extension Builder > Bundle Manifest Editor" menu. First of all, the "Max. Target Version" on the Bundle tab panel must be set to "empty" (to be sure the panel could be run on CS5.5 and CS6); then, after having clicked on the "Extension" tab panel, the "AutoVisible" property must be unchecked and the "applicationActivate" event must be added to the "Start on event(s)" list.
If the panel is executed on CS5 and CS5.5 the behaviour is the expected one and could be reproduced this way:
Launching the panel by clicking on the "Extensions > CSXSWindowedAppDemo" menu;
Clicking on the second tab panel ("Status Bar");
Closing the panel;
Opening the panel again with its menu (see point 1).
As expected, the panel should open by presenting the "Status Bar" tab panel.
Now on InDesign CS6:
Launching the panel by clicking on the "Extensions > CSXSWindowedAppDemo" menu;
Clicking on the second tab panel ("Status Bar");
Closing the panel;
Opening the panel again with its menu (see point 1).
Action #4 doesn't open the panel, nothing happens and re-opening it by clicking on its menu again will cause the panel to be "re-executed" from the scratch by presenting the first tab panel again (as it was executed the first time). Then, the other steps:
selecting the second tab panel ("Status Bar");
closing the the panel;
opening the panel again.
Now, the panel is shown as expected and the "Status Bar" tab panel is shown.
I tried to figured out a solution for this, but I don't actually understand what's happening on CS6.
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Luca

Hi VG,
I am surprised to know that you are not facing against this behaviour on CC too (because I had on CC as well); when I asked to the Adobe Developer Support I was told to create a separate project for CS6 and CC and effectively this solved the issue. Unfortunately this way, I had to manage two different projects instead of one.
Hope this could help
Best,
Luca

  • Slow panels in InDesign CS6

    Hi,
Has anyone else having problems with the panels on the right hand side of the screen on InDesign CS6? They're extremely unresponsive when collapsed and if clicked cause the spinning rainbow beachball to appear.
I'm using a brand new retina Macbook Pro 2.3 ghz 8GB with mountain lion.
It seemed to fix itself after the last Firmware update for the retina pro but reverted back to slowing down again today.
    Any ideas/solution?

Any chance anyone wants to try to cross-check and isolate this problem more specifically? Curious what kind of setup chrismcobble has for example, since the problem interestingly also occured on a 2010 Mac Pro. I know leaving the panels open is a temporary workable fix, but I'd prefer to have a fully functioning application if possible.

  • Help with blank folio builder panel in InDesign CS6?

Hello. I am having the same peoblem that was discussed on February 7th regarding a blank folio builder screen. Mine looks exactly like the image posted during that thread (i.e., no actionable items in the panel... not even hints just empty. This occured as soon as I installed the 8.0.1 unpdate of 7 February.
    1. Following the suggestions in the previous thread I uninstalled InDesign using the Adobe cleaner program. I reinstalled InDesign from the Adobe Application Mamager (as I am a Creative Cloud member) and once installed, ran the updates from within InDesign (2.0.6) and reset the preferences. Over the past day I have repeated the cleaner/uninstall/reinstall/update/clear preferences 3 more times. The updates had been about 72MB. Today after loading InDesign I checked for updates and it showed an 8.0.1 update of about 43MB. I tried that. Same results. I'm running the software on a 15" MacBook Pro with up to date OS X software. I have also run the current DPS updates.
    Help!

Go to help Menu in InDesign and click on Update. Install DPS Tools. If that does not help, go to http://www.adobe.com/downloads/ and install DPS Tools for InDesign CS6.

  • Links panel in InDesign CS6 isn't auto-sorting updated links

In previous versions of InDesign if you sorted the links panel by status it would automatically update the order of the links when their status changed. So when a link went from being missing to being re-linked, it would automatically change position in the list.
In CS6 I've been having the problem that links that need updating don't sort to the top of the list (or the bottom), instead they stay in alphabetical order even though the status column has been selected as the sorting technique. If I click the status column I can sort them manually, but then once they have been updated they stay where they are instead of dropping down with the rest of the up-to-date links.
Essentially the links panel only sorts if I do it manually. But continually manually sorting really isn't an option given the number of links I need to manage while under deadline. I work at a newspaper and have hundreds of links that are updated from various sources. I need to quickly see what has been updated at a glance.
I've checked through my preferences but can't find anything that may be causing this. Additionally I've recently upgraded to a new computer and operating system, but the sorting problem persists. (I've upgraded to a new iMac with the Maverick OS, 10.9.2) I had hoped that upgrading and reinstalling might fix the issue, but it hasn't.
Any suggestions? I'm really hoping it's just a preference I've overlooked.

inDesign links documents via a file path.
It doesn't actually add the image itself to the document, but rather relays a link to the where file resides on the hard drive.
It then draws a representation of that image in the layout using a proxy thumbnail.
So when it's linked it is actually looking at a file path, say something like
If I move that file to a computer where the my documents folder has a different name say "C:\MyDocuments\Eugene\Images\Eugene1.png"
    "C:\MyDocuments\Marcelo\"
Then when I open the file on Marcelo's computer the link would still be
    "C:\MyDocuments\Eugene\Images\Eugene1.png"
I need to redirect the link to go to
    "C:\MyDocuments\Marcelo\Images\Eugene1.png"
As stated above you should use
    File>Package
Zip the folders the computer generates - and then send them to a new computer.
Unzip and work on the file.

  • Missing stroke panel - Mac InDesign CS6 (8.0.2)

Can't remember when I last needed to apply a stroke to an object but I've found today that I have no stroke panel. I've tried deleting prefs as variously described but that hasn't helped. Where can it be hiding?
    Help!
    Thanks.

Thanks for the fast response. I have try all of the Workspace options, but nothing seemed to open up the stroke tools. I went ahead and cleared my preferences and jumped into Edit>Menu and made sure all was set to "visibility". I'm still missing the "stroke" tools which normally are listed under Window>Stroke. Got anymore ideas?

  • InDesign CS6 Object style...

InDesign CS6 Object style don't accept Paragraph Style in Flow Text mode.
The red number "3" is red although is in frame with object style that has paragraph style with black text color. Black number "2" also unchanged. Why???

@romankoschka – Object styles simply do not work the way you wish:
Different styles for different text frames are accepted, but with threaded text frames the paragraph style of the object style is not bound to a single text frame.
First you will have to un-thread the text frames, then apply the new object styles, then thread the text frames again…
But this behaviour is not new in InDesign CS6.

  • Sign in with indesign CS6 in folio builder panel

hi! I can't sign in with indesign CS6 in folio builder panel. what can a i do?? I can sign in from adobe web page, but not from indesign, and the option "updates" from "Help" menu is deactivated

I found one way to fix it:
    - quit all CS6 apps
    - if in OSX force quit the CS6ServiceManager via Activity Monitor app
    - go to the User Library (hold down option key while accessing the Go menu) and find these:
/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CS6ServiceManager/preference/csxs3.pref  - move this file out to desktop
Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE/opm.db - move this file out to desktop
zip these up and delete the original, you now have inaccessible copies to put back just in case but have found this unnecessary.
    - Restart Indesign and log in should now hold.
Found this started to happen after updating to 10.9.2, on a number of our designers machines.

  • Indesign CS6 acting strange at times

I am not loving Indesign CS6. Not because of it's functionality but because it acts strangely. When I quit it, sometimes it takes forever to quit and you start wondering if it is going to, sometimes it says it's closed but the tabbed windows still remain in view only grayed out with the beachball spinning. Eventually it goes away but it is disturbing. anyone know why?
Another thing is that when I change a font size, it will look like it changed but still have the after image of the previous size. Irritating.
One more, and I've had this problem for all of the last versions since I think cs4. When I try to replace a pdf with a current version, (unless I have restarted my computer since the last time I created it,) it tells me that I don't haver permisson or that file may be in use. I end up going to the pdf and trashing it physically. Not very efficient.
I know there are 3 issues but I've only had it for a couple of months at best.
The first issue is the most disturbing.
Mountain Lion 10.8.2, 8 gb memory, processor 3.06 ghz intel

Again, please remove your auto-signature when replying by email.
Let's try a couple of diagnostic experiments, please.
First, create a new user account onthe mac and log in with that and tell us if there is a change in behavior in ID.
Second, try starting in with extensions disabled by holding down the Shift key while booting the Mac. Does that make a difference?
Do you run any sort of utilities -- anti-virus, Mac Keeper, etc.?

  • Cannot access Adobe Folio Builder using Indesign (CS6) on Windows 7, error message is 'An error has occured while trying to sign in to the Folio Builder Panel' [IMS_ERROR_FAILURE]

Cannot access Adobe Folio Builder using Indesign (CS6) on Windows 7, error message is 'An error has occured while trying to sign in to the Folio Builder Panel' [IMS_ERROR_FAILURE]

Yes, I can open the DPS portal via the Folio Builder panel within InDesign. Although I have created Folios locally within InDesign CS6, the DPS portal is empty and everthing greyed out with just the text "There are no folios to display. Create folios with the folio builder in InDesign".
If I try to sign in within the Folio Builder panel in InDesign, I get the error message [IMS_ERROR_FAILURE] . In addition I am also not able to access the "Help" menu from within InDesign although I am connected to the internet.
To complicate it even further, I am working in the UK whereas all internet control (firewall) and licences are handeled by head office in Germany. I am not sure if this is a firwewall issue or not but if the IT department in Germany could get support from Adobe to understand the access requirements, this may help.
Hopefully using the forum someone out there will know the answer.

  • No panels, shortcuts etc in InDesign CS6

    Hi all,
Just installed InDesign CS6 on my machine (MacBook Pro, 10.8.3) and ran all updates but when I fire up InDesign I cannot see any panels, have no shortcuts and the menus are incomplete. I have CS5 and 5.5 on the same machine. I've tried reinstalling, deleting prefs but without any luck. All other CS6-programs works flawless.
[Edit] There is no InDesign CS6 presets in the Application Support/Adobe folder... How is that even possible? [/edit]
    Suggestions??
Thanks in advance, this is driving me nuts.

    Trofast,
Try this create a new administrator account (for test launch) and try launching Indesign and see if you can get the panels and menus there.
If you do get the panels and menus than there is some problem with the permissions on your this account.
You can reset the permissions using this link
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2963
    OR
    Repair File & Folder Permissions
File permission problems can arise when Mac OS X is updated. This can prevent our games from launching and may cause them to unexpectedly quit when certain game features are accessed. Use the steps below to repair file permission settings on your hard drive.
Using Finder, navigate to the /Applications directory.
Right-click the game folder and select Get Info.
In the info box, go to the Sharing & Permissions section and click on the lock to unlock it. Enter your administrator password when prompted.
Make sure all privileges are set to Read & Write.
Click on the Burst icon (cogwheel) and select Apply to all enclosed items. Select Yes to confirm the action.
Note: Step 5 must be done, even if the folder already displays Read & Write privileges. This helps ensure all enclosed files have the same permissions.

  • Why does Indesign CS6 Tools panel cover up the left side rulers?

Every time I open a window in Indesign CS6 I have to slide the window to the right so I can use the left-hand ruler and the x close button. Is there any way to change this in preferences? Or is this a glitch?
    Thanks!

It is actually not a preference.
Method 1: Go to menu WINDOWS->ARRANGE
Method 2: Move the window with the mouse. When the window edges touch the tool bar edges, the window should be framed by a blue frame. Let go and it will be tabbed.

  • When using "create outlines" on type, gradient goes wacky & outlines look strange (InDesign CS6)

    Hi,
I'm working on a logo in InDesign CS6 where I'm trying to "create outlines" from type I've set so I can have some final artwork to hand over to a sign company. The type has a gradient applied, along with a white stroke added to the outside. When I "create outlines" of the font, the gradient mysteriously changes angle and the white outline around the type no longer connects correctly. Hard to describe, so have a look at the image below:
The goal is to have the blend and logo look like #1. So, my questions:
    a) how do I "create outlines" of the type and also keep the gradient the same angle as #1? I can manually adjust this using the gradient tool, but this is inaccurate and kludgy.
    b) how can I get the white outlines on the new, converted logo to look like 1 (nicely connected), rather than the mess in #2?
Many thanks in advance for your help and insight!
    Kris

@Kris – For getting the outlines right after "Create Outlines" you need some additional steps to merge the overlapping "ogo" part of your logo to one path.
Maybe what you cannot do is getting the outlines totally right. That will depend of the number of inner forms. For that I recommend Adobe Illustrator.
What you can do in InDesign:
    1. Release the compound path of all outlined characters
    2. For some paths you have to change the direction of the path and do compound again
    3. Then you can use path finder to add paths together
And: You'll need a new gradient with a different start/stop point.
Here some steps illustrating the problem:
(left the outlined text, right the "live" text)
    1. Gradient applied to the "live" text is different from the converted outlines
(Outline at left is already postprocessed with the path finder)
Path situation immediately after the conversion.
Gradient newly applied with -90° (will not match the original)
Original gradient applied to outline (will not match original):
New gradient applied to match original:
Also look at the position of the outline; now "inner" instead of "middle".
As I already said, for things like that I'd rather use Adobe Illustrator…

  • Indesign cs6 freezes/crashes on Windows 7 64 bit selecting desktop folder

    Dear All,
I'm experiencing a very strange behaviour of Indesign CS6 who freezes/closes in specific situations connected with desktop folder.
I try to explain the issue:
I got a brand new PC with Xeon CPU E3-1246 3.5 GHZ, 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 64bit and Clean installation of Indesign CS6.
Indesign works great and fast, but everytime I try to open a file (from file ---> open) and select the desktop folder the program stop thinking for 1 second than closes down without crashing, without errors without anything.
Same thing happens when I try to insert a picture in a frame selecting it from the desktop folder (only this folder, all the others work perfectly).
I couldn't find anything useful on the internet to solve this kind of problem.
Does anybody had the same problem? How did you solve that?

  • My Fonts change when opening an InDesign CS4 file with InDesign CS6

I've been experiencing strange behaviour when opening a InDesign CS4 file file with InDesign CS6: the kerning and spacing is all off:

Is this a conversion error? Is there a setting/pref I've got wrong?

It's more than a year ago since this issue was reported, but at this time I'd had the same problem when opening a CS4 document in CS6/CC.
I was amazed that a header, placed in capitals, looked different in CS6/CC. But at last, after several tests, i've came to the conclusion that "forced" capitals behaving different than "real" capitals. In others words: when you forcing text to capitals the kerning would be different in CS6/CC. When you place text in real capitals (Shift + text) the kerning is the same as in both InDesign versions.
    Text in CS4:
As you can see: in CS4 there's no difference between real capitals en forced capitals.
Below the results when opening the CS4 file in CS6/CC:
I'm not sure if there are still people struggling with this problem, but hopefully was is this helpful.
