Strange border on shape and other layers

I am working on a file. I have a background layer. I draw a shape layer, in this case a box, and when I do this layer has what almost looks like a drop shadow on two sides, ie the two edges have darker pixels than the shape color. I see the same sort of behavior on an image layer, in this case a photo, where the pixels on two edges, not the same edges, have different looking pixels. There are no effects on these layers

Try the following. Observe very closely and see if you can tell what's happening.
Create a new document at 400px × 400px; RGB, 8 bit, White background, square pixel aspect ratio. Resolution setting doesn't matter.
Tap your "D" key to return Photoshop's default FG & BG colors to black & white. Tap your "F" key to toggle screen mode to "Full Screen Mode with Menu Bar."
Make the documents rulers visible if they are not (CTRL + R). Right click on either of the rulers to drop the menu and make sure the unit of measurement is set to display values in pixels.
Zoom in to 1600% anywhere in the middle of your document. You'll be able to see tick marks on the rulers that designate each and every row and column of pixels.
THAT'S
the invisible, intrinsic "grid" I'm talking about, present in every Photoshop document. Want to see Photoshop's user configurable grid? Tap the
CTRL + ' shortcut a couple times. Leave your grid visible. (I left mine invisible for better clarity in the screenshots)
Select your rectangle Custom Shape Tool. In the Options Bar drop the Geometry Options menu on the right side of the row of shape icons.
UNcheck the box next to "Snap to Pixels." Then in the Option Bar's Styles drop-down menu, make sure that "No Style" is selected, as shown at the left.
In your document window click and drag out a small rectangle shape, without regard to where you begin and end. Notice the antialiasing that is introduced by Photoshop if your shape's diagonally opposite corners aren't started and ended in precise alignment with the ruler tick marks. Drag out guidelines as I have in this second image and you'll see what I mean.
Select your Move Tool (V). With the Shape Layer highlighted and active in the Layers Palette, tap your keyboard's arrow keys. You will see that the shape will ONLY move in 1 pixel increments. Pay attention to the antialiasing along the straight edges of the rectangle shape. Notice how the rows of pixels on either side of the vector line don't change in color/brightness value?
Select your Path Selection Tool (
black
arrow "A"). Click inside the rectangle shape to select it; you'll see all 4 corner anchor points display as tiny gray filled-in boxes. Tap your keyboard's arrow keys again. Now, notice how you can move the vector outline in increments of a fraction of a pixel. You can do this with vector-defined paths (which you have just selected). In the previous step, you were using your Move Tool; its overriding function is to move pixels. The vector path just follows along, in 1 pixel incremental movements. Also notice when you move the vector path in these fraction-of-a-pixel increments, the rows of pixels which Photoshop generates as antialiasing will change in color/brightness. This antialiasing is recalculated for each fractional movement so that the edge of the shape
appears
to be positioned mid-pixel. But, because we know that the pixel is an indivisible unit of measurement for a raster-based image, this is only done to create an illusion that a shape's edge sits at mid-pixel.
I know this reply is long and wordy (I could have gone into a deeper explanation, but I'm hoping this will suffice), but there's really no way to explain it quickly. Hopefully, this exercise has given you a better understanding of what you were seeing before you started this thread, and why it happens.
The takeaway lesson is this: If you want dead accurate and hard, clean horizontal and vertical edges, make sure that the vector paths which define the shape are aligned to Photoshop's intrinsic, invisible pixel grid.

  • Arrow Shape, and other Shapes

    I am searching for Shapes, Shapes that I can use in my graphiing tool. My Program has Nodes connected to each other with simple lines.
    Currently I use circles, ovals, eclipses, and general Shapes from the java.awt.geom. package. I am searching for more shapes that can really help my presentation.
    does someone know where to find an Arrow Shape class that I can use in my drawing?
    java.awt.Shape is an interface, I beleive you can extend it and create many possible shapes with it. I need these classes!
    thank you very much.

    Here's a method you can use to make symmetrical polygons.
    You can use random values in the expression for R which determines the size and for
    the center point coordinates (cx, cy).
        private int[][] generateShapeArrays(int cx, int cy, int R, int sides) {
            int radInc = 0;
            if(sides % 2 == 0)
                radInc = 1;
            int[] x = new int[sides];
            int[] y = new int[sides];
            for(int i = 0; i < sides; i++) {
                x[i] = cx + (int)(R * Math.sin(radInc*Math.PI/sides));
                y[i] = cy - (int)(R * Math.cos(radInc*Math.PI/sides));
                radInc += 2;
            // keep base of triangle level
            if(sides == 3)
                y[2] = y[1];
            return new int[][] { x, y };
        }One way to use this method:
        protected void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
            super.paintComponent(g);
            Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D)g;
            g2.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_ANTIALIASING,
                                RenderingHints.VALUE_ANTIALIAS_ON);
            int w = getWidth();
            int h = getHeight();
            int R = Math.min(w,h)/8;
            int[][] xy = generateShapeArrays(w/4, h/4, R, 6);
            Polygon p = new Polygon(xy[0], xy[1], 6);
            g2.draw(p);
        }

  • How do I subtract the shape of a layer (a scanned shape) from my other layers - but when the shape hasn't been drawn in photoshop

    Im trying to subtract a shape I have previously painted and scanned in from my other layers...can this be done?

    If this is the effect you want, add a white bottom layer, and create a mask of the heart art to drop it out of image layers
    or... do  you want color only in the heat shape and the rest of the page white?

  • Photoshop 3d obj interacting strangely with other layers

    After Effects and Photoshop CS5.
    I have an imported photoshop 3d object which on its own behaves as it should.
    But, when I place it in front of other layers (2d in 3d space) I can see the other layers through the photoshop 3d layer. They are all behaving in space as they should, apart from the fact that the photoshop layer seems to be made of glass (which it isn't).
    I can't for the life of me work out what I am doing wrong.
    Apart from this, I can't get shadows to work in this comp, where in another comp which is exactly the same apart from the imported PS 3d object, they are working fine. (If I hide the PS 3d object, shadows and lighting work fine with the rest of the objects)
    Or is all of this impossible because I'm using a PS 3d object?
    I would be grateful for any ideas, because I am totally stumped.

    Well, you completely misunderstand how this works, I'm afraid. PS Live 3D is merely an intra-layer effect and does not in any way interact with AE's own 3D beyond responding to the camera. That's no differtent than using 3D-ish effects like Trapcode Particular - the effect may look 3D, but is applied to a 2D layer. And that also explains all your otehr issues - any form of 2D layer inbetween 3D layers breaks 3D rendering order. You need to re-structure your project by splicing the stuff to separate comps and cross-linking the cameras to get the illusion.

  • Jdeveloper visual editor do not show images and other component shapes

    I used jdeveloper(10.1.3.3.0) to create an ADF BC application, I create a jsf jsp file and drag and drop components from ADF Faces Core to this file visual editor, but jdeveloper visual editor do not show images and other component shapes.
    Could you tell me how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks,

    Actually, I need to make a dummy change to the jsp file and then it will display boxes representing the objects in the visual editor whereas I get an exception in the log:
    javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot find FacesContext
    This does not talk much to me !

    I have several layers for my image: Background, Moon, Tree, Grass and Clouds.  When I try to use the Move tool to move the Moon, the tool jumps to the Tree layer.  The same thing happens with the other layers as well (except the background layer).  How can I keep the move tool from jumpimg to the Tree layer?

    1. Pre-select (highlight) the layer to move in the Layers panel.  or-
    2. [ALT+Right mouse click]  to select the wanted layer in the image window.
    and maybe
    3. Set the PS option to "Auto-select" a layer with cursor hover.  (can be very confusing!)

    I need help! My daughter is busy with her final studyprogram. Her "word" document changed into stars and other strange figures. Is there a possibility to recover this. I hope someone can help her!!!! thanks jvdharst

    Are you using the latest version of MS Word?  It’s possible you can restore the corrupt file from the last saved version or the automatically saved version.  Have you tried that?  MS Word uses a folder called Autorecover to store temporary versions of your file.  Hopefully there’s a good version in that folder.  Use Finder to search for Autorecover if needed.

    Your file is most likely toast, but still:

  • Visio Cisco Equipment Shapes out of Proportion and others Missing

    Hello Everyone,
    Have any of you noticed that the shapes of line cards and port cards are out of proportion with the chassis Visio shape in which you place them.  The ones below leave gaps not representative of the actual physical equipment.  Also, it seems not all the shapes are included with the VSS files.
    WS-X45-Sup6-E Supervisor Engine 6-E
    WS-X4548-GB-RJ45
    WS-X4648-RJ45V+E
    WS-X4306-GB
    The attached image provides and excellent example of the issue with the current Cisco Visio Shapes.
    Thanks,
    C. Z.

    Hi CZ,
    You are correct that some of the line cards on that stencil do not fit properly into the chassis.  Those icons/shapes were produced by the previous vendor prior to 2009 when we took this over. The shapes produced by my group do fit correctly, for example the WS-X4748-RJ45-E. The product group did not authorize us to go back to retrofit the older shapes and that's why they do not fit as expected.
    Regarding missing shapes, we produce what the product group orders from us but I can often ask them to fund additional shapes when there is a forum request. Please understand that they will not accept requests for end of life products.

  • Working with polygon shapes and defining active/non-active mouseover areas (imported shapes)?

    Hey guys!
    Really struggling with this one. Since Edge only has rectangles and ellipses built in as available shapes, how to I/we work with polygon shapes and active mouseover areas INSIDE of these shapes and non-active mouseover areas OUTSIDE of the shapes?
    Problem/symptom: when I import a polygon, be it any file format from from Photoshop or SVG from Illustrator, a rectangular border/background (transparent) gets applied, leading to this rectangle defining the mouseover area of the shape - and not the shape itself (be it a star or whatever).
    WHAT I WANT: the very shape defines the mouseover area. How do I achieve this?? See examle below:
    WHAT I DON'T WANT: how is is now:

    Thanks for your answer, resdesign.
    I've had a look at the edge commons library, and it seems like it opens up a lot of possibilities. However, I cannot figure out how to access/target individual shapes and layers for applying effects like you would with symbols (rotation, colorchange and so on).
    WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE THE SHAPES INSERTED ON SEPERATE TIMELINES for further work and effects manipulation - is this somehow possible? So that one could reach the shapes from the stage with something like:
    sym.getShape("shapename");play("show");

    /* Tips for this Hybrid layout
    1. Since the side columns em-based sizing is based on the user's default font size, you will want to be sure that background graphics in the columns take that into account. Built correctly, this is more accessible for those that need larger font sizes, since the width of the columns remains proportionate. If this is undesirable with your design, simply change the width to a pixel size and be sure to change the margins on the #mainContent div accordingly.
    2. Since the sizing of side columns in this layout are based on the 100% font size in the body element, if you decrease the text size overall by using a font-size: 80% on the body element or the #container, remember that the column widths will downsize proportionately. You may want to increase their widths, and the size of the #mainContent div's side margins, to compensate for this.
    3. If font sizing is changed in differing amounts on each div instead of on the overall design (ie: #sidebar1 is given a 70% font size and #mainContent is given an 85% font size), this will proportionately change each of the divs overall size. You may want to adjust based on your final font sizing.
    4. The #container div is not necessary for this layout at the 100% width. You may want to use it to create faux columns or limit the width of the layout.
    5. It is not neccessary to have the 100% width on the #container div since, by nature, a div takes up 100% of the available space. It is here so that if you want to decrease the size of the overall container - perhaps leaving a bit of margin on each side - this will already be available for adjustment.
    .thrColHybHdr #container {
    width: 780px;
    /*margin: 0 auto;  the auto margins (in conjunction with a width) center the page if needed */
    text-align: left;

    margin-top: 0px;
    margin-right: auto;
    margin-bottom: 0px;
    margin-left: auto;
    .thrColHybHdr #header {
    background-color: #C9F76F;
    height: 100%;
    width: 780px;

    .thrColHybHdr #header h1 {

    /* Tips for sidebar1:
    1. Be aware that if you set a font-size value on this div, the overall width of the div will be adjusted accordingly.
    2. Since we are working in ems, it's best not to use padding on the sidebar itself. It will be added to the width for standards compliant browsers creating an unknown actual width.
    3. Space between the side of the div and the elements within it can be created by placing a left and right margin on those elements as seen in the ".thrColHybHdr #sidebar1 p" rule.
    .thrColHybHdr #sidebar1 {
    width: 13em;
    border-top-width: thick;
    border-top-style: solid;
    border-top-color: #C06;
    float: left;
    height: auto;
    .thrColHybHdr #sidebar2 {
    width: 200px;
    text-align: center;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    float: right;
    /*.thrColHybHdr #sidebar1 h3, .thrColHybHdr #sidebar1 p, .thrColHybHdr #sidebar2 p, .thrColHybHdr #sidebar2 h3 {
    margin-left: 0px;*/ /* the left and right margin should be given to every element that will be placed in the side columns */
    /* margin-right: 0px;
    /* Tips for mainContent:
    1. If you give this #mainContent div a font-size value different than the #sidebar1 div, the margins of the #mainContent div will be based on its font-size and the width of the #sidebar1 div will be based on its font-size. You may wish to adjust the values of these divs.
    2. The space between the mainContent and sidebar1 is created with the left margin on the mainContent div.  No matter how much content the sidebar1 div contains, the column space will remain. You can remove this left margin if you want the #mainContent div's text to fill the #sidebar1 space when the content in #sidebar1 ends.
    3. To avoid float drop, you may need to test to determine the approximate maximum image/element size since this layout is based on the user's font sizing combined with the values you set. However, if the user has their browser font size set lower than normal, less space will be available in the #mainContent div than you may see on testing.
    4. In the Internet Explorer Conditional Comment below, the zoom property is used to give the mainContent "hasLayout." This avoids several IE-specific bugs that may occur.
    .thrColHybHdr #mainContent {
    text-align: center;
    margin-right: 0px;
    margin-top: 0px;
    margin-bottom: 0px;
    margin-left: 0px;
    width: 580px;
    background-color: #2A4480;
    color: #C9F76F;
    padding: 0px;
    .MarginTopZero {
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    .busConslt {
    height: 600px;
    width: 800px;
    .idea {
    height: auto;
    width: 100%;
    .thrColHybHdr #footer {
    padding: 0;
    background-color: #C9F76F;
    margin: 0px;
    .thrColHybHdr #footer p {
    margin: 0; /* zeroing the margins of the first element in the footer will avoid the possibility of margin collapse - a space between divs */
    padding: 0px; /* padding on this element will create space, just as the the margin would have, without the margin collapse issue */
    color: #000;
    /* Miscellaneous classes for reuse */

    .absolLft {

    left: 0px;
    .defFullTop {
    position: relative;
    width: 600px;
    border-top-width: thick;
    border-top-style: solid;
    border-top-color: #000;
    margin: 0px;
    .tuneUpTop {
    background-color: #000;
    color: #FFF;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    .contactForm {
    width: 470px;
    height: auto;
    left: auto;
    right: auto;
    .borderRight {
    border: medium solid #A62F00;
    margin-top: 0px;
    margin-bottom: 0px;
    margin-left: 0px;
    .MenuVertDiv {
    margin-bottom: 0px;
    clear: both;
    height: 38px;
    background-color: #A62F00;
    width: 100%;
    .masterBackground {
    background-color: #BF5930;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;

    Your HTML code contains conditional comments for IE.  Try reducing or removing the extra padding and see if that helps.
    /* place css fixes for all versions of IE in this conditional comment */
    .thrColHybHdr  #sidebar1, .thrColHybHdr #sidebar2 { padding-top: 30px; }
    .thrColHybHdr  #mainContent { zoom: 1; padding-top: 15px; }
    /* the above  proprietary zoom property gives IE the hasLayout it needs to avoid  several bugs */
    </style>

  • 20gb iPod, error 1418, "disk cannot be read from or written to", and others

    I am having a series of serious issues with my 4th gen 20gb. I have tried restoring it several times, syncing if and when it restores, then restoring it again when it tells me "disk cannot be read from or written to". Sometimes when I try restoring it i get the "unknown error 1418" message, so I disconnect the iPod and try again; sometimes it restores, sometimes it doesn't. I have also tried plain resetting it (select+menu) and that either gives me the dead smiley ipod or a folder with an exclamation point.
    What can I do to salvage my beloved iPod?
    Thanks for any and all help.

    If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
    If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
    Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
    Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
    Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
    Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
    If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
    You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
    Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
    iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
    The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
    iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
    iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
    You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
    Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
    I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
    If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
    Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
    Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
    In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
    Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
    You don’t want to pay any service charges
    You are prepared to buy a new one
    You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
    Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
    You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
    Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
    In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
    2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
    Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

    I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
    Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
    Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Is there a way to color layers and sub layers in Fireworks?

    Hello all,
    I'm trying to find a way to colorize the layers and sub layers in the layer panel in Fireworks CS5.5, like you can in Photoshop. I work in a small web design company doing GUI design and when I pass the files on to the developers they are asking for easier ways to sort the content of various layers and sublayers at a glance. In Photoshop you can apply a color to a layer or group in the layrs panel and that works great for an internal labeling scheme. Is there anything like this built into Fireworks or are there any add-ons from a 3rd party etc. that would allow this? It wold save a lot of trouble and time for us. I can't find anything anywhere about it, but it may be that my search terminology is poor. I'm not sure how you would word a search for this kind of feature. I keep getting information about applying colors to shapes etc rather than colorzing the labeling of layers panel itself.
    Thanks in advance for any help or information!

    Thanks for the information,
    I was relatively certain there wasn't a native way to do this. I was hoping maybe someone had created a plug-in but as you say, I could see where it would be very difficult to modify the internal workings of the software like that.
    I went ahead and put in a feature request per the link you provided... maybe someday that will do some good haha! I use sublayers and pages currently and have on a few occasions used states. I have a few options that are open to me if it were just me doing the work but I work with a couple developers and they know how to get around in Fireworks enough to make a slice and select needed objetcs (as long as I group complex shapes and mult-tier effects) but that is about all they do and are willing to know about "design" software lol! They like the sublayers because I think it's similar in behavior to the database and coding software they use. I have convinced them of the beauty of pages for alternate colors and versions of the same site but that is about as far as they are willing to go right now.
    They want to mainly be able to quickly turn off specific text and certain effect layers as needed so they can sort slicing faster and see where the desired objects and layers are at a glance. We've been using sub layers to break things up between these components but they aren't as happy with that because it still means often having to read the names on the layers palette and when you have an extensive project with many items in the layers panel, it gets hard to read at times. It also addes even more folders to sort through becuase of the high level of specicifity. It's not a deal breaker, just a way to speed up the workflow and keep tension down haha! The onion method sounds interesting but I'll have to demo it first and see how easy it is to fool with hiding various combinations... you know how "coders" can be sometimes
    Thanks for the input! Here's to hoping Adobe thinks this feature is worth it in the future! Can't see where it would be terribly difficult to add!

  • Navigation hidden by shapes and slideshow.

    I created a horizontal navigation bar and pinned it on the master page.
    The site I am creating is one-page and scrollable. As I scroll down, the nav bar remains stationary. The problem I am having, however, is that as I scroll down it disappears behind shapes and a slideshow.
    How can I overcome this?
    note: Some of the pages have different solid backgrounds. For that, I have tried two approaches. One is to use the basic widget and drop a fill into the single image. The other is to create a rectangle with a solid fill. In either case, they are "moved to the back." Anyway, it is not working.

    Hi there..
    The best and simple solution for your problem is to create a new layer for your navigation bar,
    make sure to place it on the top of all layers and select all the elements of navigation bar, pin them to the center of your page.

  • Iterate shapes and convert them to Compound Shapes

    In order to keep shapes as shape layers in Photoshop when exporting from .ai to .psd, one has to convert all shapes to Compound Shapes.
    At the moment, i'm using an action that converts the shape, then selects the shape above. Starting with the bottom shape, i have to click
    the action for every shape.
    Is there a way to make a script cycle through all shapes and groups, converting them to Compound Shapes?
    At the end of the script, it would be nice to have it make an export of the file to .psd aswell.
    I'm somewhat familiar to javascript, but i would really appreciate some guidelines in creating this.

    It okay is, because this will be great learning for our minds!  There is a way, to have your Extendscript execute the AHK script which tells it to "send" the F-keys as if it came from your keyboard.  The action will go, but I am not very clear on how out of synch the action will be with the script.  At first thought , putting $.sleep() may do the trick, especially if your action does not take long & there's not a big chance of it having to take long.  Well, anywho, after the time break, it will go do its script thing, which is select the next shape or group (pageItem).  And at the end, hey, you can try tacking on the PSD saving using the export with ExportOptionsPhotoshop- but that's later!  Qwertyfly... has some examples here of executing an AHK script from the jsx script, check 'em out!
