Strange Temperatures

Hi there,
I use a MSI K8T-Neo-Board and reported high temperatures (idle 55, load 65) which seemend to be too high in my opinion. I read, that this is bios-related and that there's a bios bug that shows to high temps.
I installed the new bios and after reboot I only had 35 idle and 45 load ... I really don't know, if these are the correct temps, because I don't know how to check that. But the system was fine for a few weeks and so I left it that way. In the past two days now the temps are somtimes up to 55/65 (MSI core center) again. When I reboot my pc, the temps go down again (very strange). I didn't change anything in my systems hardware (I know everybody says that), only reinstalled core center because it showed strange program behavious, when I tried to set fsb to "auto". It raised fsb so high to that point, the system rebooted. After setting it to save it still raised fsb, I really don't know why.
I finally reinstalled core center and now it seems to stay at default 200 mhz.
What is going wrong here? Which temps are the right ones? Is there still a bug in the bios? Or is core center fooling me?

I suspected as much. First let me say that the Newcastles do seem to report a little higher temps than what you suspect are low end numbers. However the main thing of high temp readings on a cold boot is a known issue. The sensors do not get read until after the Bios loads and remain a tad on the high side until you reboot. That is a known issue that MSI is supposedly looking into fixing. After a warm boot you should get fairly accurate temp readings though with Bios 1.8.
Hoope that helps clear this up a bit.

I've had my pc for 2 years or so, it's a KT3 Ultra-ARU with Athlon XP 1800+ and it has worked fine until now.  I have just bought an mp3 player (Creative Zen Touch) so now I finally have a USB2.0 device.
I opened up the case to make sure the front USB ports on my case (Lian Li PC60) were connected properly and connected to a USB2 header.  I pulled out the network card so I could see/reach the USB headers and made sure things were connected properly.
I booted into Windows XP and everything seemed fine except PC Alert 4 which now shows some freaky results.
    CPU Temperature : -44C
    Sys Temperature  : 0C
    Vcore : 4.08v
    3.3V   : 4.08v
    +5V   : 6.85v
    +12V : 15.30v
CPU and system fans are normal (6000 and 1500 rpm).
I rebooted into the BIOS and the BIOS also shows similar absurd information except temperature which is "Not Present".
The only thing I've tried so far is to unplug the power cord and leave it unplugged overnight, I didn't want to try anything too drastic until I got some opinions.
I'm still using the original BIOS that came with the board, I've had no issues and so no need to update the BIOS.
For what it's worth, I have tested copying files to the mp3 player using the USB2 port and it worked fine.

99,5% of people would have just connected USB device and if it did not work would check the USB connectors....but you did first the checking even removing a card ?
..."Perhaps I knocked something while fiddling around and fried a not so important component on the motherboard..." Did you ? Why do I feel you are trying to talk to yourself more than give information ?
..."the PC has been running for a few hours, even after playing a game (Deus Ex) for 45 minutes....".  Then if all is working good, go on as you are now and don't pay attention to those weird numbers.

  • MSI kt600 FISR Delta temperature problem

Ok i have a problem with my temperatures of my watercooled system!
I installed the w/c on my new mobo just a few days ago and got some very strange temperature readings.
First my temperature of my proc = ~50 idle and 53 stressed!! which ofcourse is much to high for wc.
Now, i check the position of my waterblock 3 times, my pump, air in the system and so on and everything seems perfect!
Then i noticed that my the temperature of my Nordbrigde was very hot, so i installed a 120mm fan directly above it to cool it (with my case open). Suddenly the temperature of my processor dropped like a stone in water until it stopped at 40oC. The temps in the BIOS gave the same difference!
Now this seems a little odd to me?!! Why would a fan blowing air have any influence on my processor temperature???
Can it be that my Nordbrigde got so hot it influenced my temp. readings of my processor? Or did i do something very very stupid?
Does anyone have a any idea's?
    My specs:
    Zalman 400 watt;
    MSI kt600 FISR Delta;

    Hello,
Bios 5.4 fixes a setting in the BIOS called CPU halt detection.
This can dramatically reduce the CPU temps when idle.
Without this setting on, the CPU temp is always close to the max temp.
    Like you said 50 -53.
Enable this option in the BIOS.
Now my PC is not watercooled and the temps are
    idle
34sys 41.5cpu (this was taken on the hot days we had)
max I haven't record any temps yet
    but its and ~40sys 52cpu
Aero7+ blower on min rpm ~1700
My CPU is only an XP1700+

  • NForce 5 Temperature is a bit high..

Just installed nTune 5.05.18.00 and noticed a VERY HIGH chipset temperature and strange temperature graphical chart.
    Here is a screenshot.
162°C is quite a bit. I remember reading about this here, I think, but can't remember what was said. Anyone know if this temperature is correct and normal?
Also, can anyone recommend a good temp/fanspeed/voltage monitoring program that works with my motherboard? I use SpeedFan but it doesn't report every voltage. Not that they are accurate (so they say), but still..

I'm pretty sure ntune doesn't support that board (no MSI nv board has been supported fully by ntune before), so just forget about those readouts .

  • Sorry to bother --- System Temperature...

Hi! First post for me, here.... I know that this problem has been "overdiscussed" but I'd like to report my experience and hear your opinions. So please, don't blame me...
I'm talking about the "system Temperature" readings on K8N Neo2 Platinum board. I've read many complains about temperature sensors on this mobo.
    Topic reference:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=77365.0
I'm watercooling for the first time. Got everything installed 'till seen strange temperatures readings. So I put outside of the case the mainboard with CPU and Chipset waterblocks attached. My videocard is a Leadtek 6800GT and it gets pretty hot: I've excluded it from my test thinking was the cause of the chipset overheating problem and replaced with an Asus Geforce2 card.
The temperatures are checked only in BIOS (modded v1.8Rev.3)
    Ambient temperature is about 28°C.
While CPU temperature keeps around 30-34°C, the "system temperature" goes up around 50°C. I put some little heatsinks over the hot mosfets (40°C) near EIDE ports and on the chip on the right of the motherboard chipset without luck.
Then I put a fan on the winbond chip and seen the temperature drop till 30°C. Checking with an external digital sensor confirm this result.
So my question is: "System temperature" = "Winbond chip" temperature?
Considering that the chipset (with its waterblock) is barely warm, how could Winbond chip accurately report mainboard/chipset temperature if it's the primary cause of heating?
Secondly, without aircooling, Winbond chip keeps a very long time to go back to high temperatures and, however, it never gets 50°C. Now it's 37-40 °C. This is a very strange behaviour, don't you think?
Please tell me if I'm wrong.
    Hope to hear your opinions...
    Thank you very much,
    Zazza

    Hi Supershanks!
    Thanks for the answer...
Now I've looked at that thread:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=80972.msg573377#msg573377
but I can't see why if I aircool the Winbond chip, system temperature goes down to 30-35°C...
Hope to hear Syar2003 thoughts about.

  • BSoD on a new machine

    Hi, people.
I've just bought and assembled a new computer and I'm having constant BSoDs (usually with disturbing sound effect like looping the last bit of sound, which sounds like "bzzzzz" or "brrrrrr", or even "beeeeep"), game crashes (always
c0000005 code) and "video driver has stopped responding and recovered" messages at random moments.
    Specs (used Piriform Speccy):
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 (not activated yet)
    CPU: Intel Core i7 4770 @ 3.40GHz    27 °C Haswell 22nm Technology

Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Z87X-D3H-CF (SOCKET 0)    28 °C
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4600 (Gigabyte)
            4095 МБNVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 (Gigabyte)    32 °C

GeForce Experience Info: GeForce R331 Game Ready Driver, version 331.82, timestamp 19.11.2013
    BSoD codes:
    driver_irql_not_less_or_equal
    page_fault_in_nonpaged_area
BSoD driver file: dxgmms1.sys (attempting to corrupt the system, revealed using the Windows Driver Verifier)
So, I've downloaded and installed the latest motherboard, GPU, SSD and soundcard drivers from their official sites, deinstalling older versions using Driver Cleaner and CCleaner. I've tested my RAM with memtest and found no problems. I've done a stress-test
using the AIDA64 - no errors. Monitoring the temperature during the stress-test and usual activities revealed no overheat. AHCI mode is set. SLI is configured through the NVidia panel. No overclocked CPU. No problems when rendering with GPU (i.e. no artifacts/hangs).
BIOS menu displays no voltage problems. No cable connection problems seen at the moment.
Also, tried with two different Windows - Professional and Ultimate, same errors. HALP PLEASE.
    Minidumps: http://anonymousdelivers.us/97897
P.S. Forgot to say, the computer is connected through a voltage regulator APC Line-R 1200. Instead of a monitor I use my TV (Samsung) connected via HDMI to the top GPU.
UPD 1: Okay, tried both of available WHQL driver versions for my GPU (320.49 and 327.23, now using 320.49) Still having random BSoDs with no driver specified (usually 0x0000001E) with weird noises when BSoD (using the motherboard output or the soundcard
    changes nothing).
Also, the Windows Driver Verifier now does not give a BSoD.
UPD: Noticed strange temperature changes on the top GPU: fading from 45° to 39° when writing this post. No game or other graphics rendering program is running, only Firefox (both of the NVidia 3d VISION plugins disabled) and Speccy.
UPD 2: Got another SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION BSoD while scrolling a page with Mozilla.
UPD 3: Experiencing strange application unstability - crashes & hangs (seen crashing AC3, Firefox, Flash Player, Samsung Magician, dwm.exe, all with c0000005 error).

OS: Windows XP home, service pack 2
    *Lite-on IT dvd-rom drive
    *floppy disk drive
I also have 3 case fans spinning away in a marginally large Chieftec Dragon tower.
The parts I marked with an asterisk (*) are parts that I removed from my old rig and re-used.
I'll try to give a clear rundown of my problem and the steps I've taken so far.
3 days ago I acquired the P45 Neo and installed it into my system, together with the 8800GT videocard. I was still using my old PSU, a Chieftec 360watt. This PSU served me well for 7 years, but it was starting to build up noise while trying to keep up games on my old rig.
I had some trouble getting the system to boot, I tried changing some of the 4 pins wires going to the hard drive and the dvd drive. I don't know if it was luck or if I managed to divide the load properly for the system to boot. But I succeeded into booting up, got into the bios and eventually installed WinXP.
As soon as it was time to install the videocard drivers, it stopped responding. I assumed it was a power issue, since I could only install the 20pin and 4pin cpu, but my Chieftec PSU didn't have a 24pin plug to the mobo - and it needed replacing anyway! So I bought a new 500watt PSU that had all the required plugs and more wattage.
I installed the new PSU, checked every connection and pressed the power button. 'Lo and behold, the computer starts up. I install the videocard drivers and it proceeds with no problems. I try to install the soundcard, but the cd says I don't have one installed. I fix that by going to the System list and install the drivers from there. I install a firewall. By then I have successfully rebooted the computer 3 or 4 times. I decide all is well and turn off the computer. But I realize I wanted to check up something on the internet.
I press the powerbutton. The PC power light go up for just a fraction of a second. I can see the blue LED of one of the case fans switching on just as briefly - then it goes out. The computer keeps trying to turn itself on. It looks like it's hickupping to try and boot!
I turn off the PSU power on the back-side because the computer keeps trying and wait for a bit. After 10 minutes, it still doesn't work. I leave the computer for a bit and return an hour later. The computer then starts up with no problems. I turn it off after a few hours, do a reset, start it up, no problems. But then the next day it happens again.
It's pretty tough figuring out what the problem is because it looks..almost random. I considered it could be a heat issue, but sometimes it *does* start up just after it's been turned down. Checking the bios shows no strange temperature shifts.
Hope anyone can help me, because I do not want to go back to my old Asrock mobo

While powered down I cleared the cmos data, removed the Dane Elec DDR2 module and set the bios to optimized defaults. Computer restarted to WinXP with no problems (it has been off the whole night). I shut down WinXP, wait a few moments and then turn the computer back on. Alas, it won't start and starts hick-upping. I turn power off at the PSU again, so it stops.
Now I try switching out the Kingston module instead. By now the computer has been off for 10 min (while I write this entry on laptop). I press the power button on the PSU and then the power button on the front. There is a short pause, lasting a second. The computer turns on, longer now, but it only lasts 2 whole seconds before it turns off again and goes on again (I believe now you can call it powercycling). It repeats this process until I shut off the PSU.
I check to see if I have installed it properly and try again but it starts powercycling again.
15 min pass, I put the Kingston module back in, press the power button and voila, this time it does start. WinXP shows up, no problems. I leave it on for a bit and then shut down. And when I press the power button again - the feeling of dread returns, when it starts hickupping again.
I'm going to see if I can install one of the memory modules from my housemate. Then hopefully tommorrow, I'm going to try if I can test a different PSU, since I see someone else on the forum - who recently posted, has the exact same power supply and also has boot problems, coincidence... or not ^^;.

Ok, i change drivers to xf86-video-ati and also xorg to version 1.12. Everything seems to work fine, but now my graphic card is very hot.
It's a very big difference: 60 degrees for fglrx and 85 for open drivers. Very strange, temperature is much higher, but fan is much louder even if xorg is not running
I have to wait for new fglrx drivers...
    Thanks

  • Mail hoging CPU and heating up MacBook Pro

    Hi,
Since more than week my MacBook Pro, running Mac OS X 10.5.8 shows strange temperature behavior.
As soon as I open Mail (3.6), the temperature of my MacBook Pro rises (with as much as 25 to 30 degrees celsius) up to 85° and more, and the fan activates. When I close down Mail the temperature falls back to normal (+/- 55° C) and the fan shuts down. This happens within seconds.
I have SMS Fan Control running on the MacBook Pro, so I can see the actual temperature.
When I open the Activity Monitor I see that Mail uses around 99% of the CPU when it's sitting idle and when it's checking for new messages it uses up to 110% of the CPU. In Console I don't see anything concerning Mail.
I tried rebuilding every single folder in Mail but to no effect.
This is a new behavior. I have owned and used the MacBook Pro for almost 3 years now and I used to run Mail in the background permanently without any problem until last week. As long as Mail is open, the fans are working which is very annoying.
When I create a new user account on the MacBook Pro and open Mail, the problem does not occur. In the Activity Monitor I see that mail takes 0,0% of the CPU when sitting idle and around 25% hen it's downloading new mails.
Does anyone have an idea what causes this behavior and how to fix it?
    Thanks a lot,
    Ivan

Well, this is a complete puzzle. At this point I have no simple solution. I can offer only the option of cloning your system to an external drive, if you can. Do not worry about any possible problems at this point. Use a good backup utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SilverKeeper - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - or you can use the Restore option of Disk Utility.
    Now comes the "hard" part.
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the Erase tab, then click on the Erase button.
Now quit DU to return to the installer where you will reinstall Leopard. Upon completing the installation you will reboot to the Setup Assistant. At the end of the setup you will configure your initial admin account. Be sure to use the same username or short name that you were using. This will assure you not have any permissions problems trying to transfer from your cloned backup to the reinstalled system.
Upgrade the new system using Software Update to download and install any required updates to return you to 10.5.8.
Now when you open Mail you can recreate you email account after which you want to select Import from the File menu. You will have an option to import from Apple Mail. Choose that option, then navigate to the old /Home/Library/Mail/ folder on your cloned backup drive. Look for the Mailbox folder and select it, then click on the Import button. This will import your mailboxes. This only works for POP accounts. If you use IMAP for your mail then after you set up the account all your server-based mail will be there.
You can similarly restore your Address Book, calendars, etc. However, third-party applications may need to be reinstalled. And, applications support data for third-party applications will need to be copied from the backup to the new system. They are usually found in /Home/Library/Applications Support/. And, you will want to restore preferences from the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder on the backup.

  • Strange heatsink temperature

    Hi,
i have a macbook core duo 2.0ghz first rev.
It has suffered of RDS untile the fan firmware update.
Recently i've installed the iStat widget, and i've noticed really strange heatsink temps.
For example now Heasink A is 109 (celsius) and Heatsink B 126° (celsius), it seem a little hot for me, or am i wrong ?
Besides that, just few minutes ago the Heatsink temps was A: 126° (celsius) and B: 11° (celsius).
Moreover sometimes iStat doesn't report heatink temps (it doesn't list the Heatsink in the temperatures list).
Are these temperatures and this behavior normal ?
    TIA

The random shutdown problem with the first generation of MacBooks seems to have been caused either by an actual faulty sensor... or a sensor wire that was damaged... with the result basically being the same... faulty readings from a heat sink sensor. The fix for this was to simply stop monitoring that sensor. There are enough redundant sensors in a modern notebook that this should not present a problem. As a processor itself has a built in temp sensor, they tend to be the most accurate (you don't have to worry about placement, wires, etc). I would go by the reported processor temp... not the heatsink temp. As the high temp you are seeing on the heatsink would seem to be way out of spec (on the high side), the fact that your machine has not shutdown would indicate that they are ignoring this sensor. It would not be uncommon for it to fluctuate between an accurate and an inaccurate reading... as this was the known problem at the time.
Personally... I tend to think some of these monitoring problems cause more worry than anything else. If your machine is running fine (and it seems to be doing so)... I wouldn't worry about it. If you don't have an Apple Store close by, you can always give them a call and explain what you're seeing. They may be able to put your mind at rest over the phone. I would hate for you to bring it in... get someone not familiar with the problem (as I would expect would be fairly common)... and have them feel they need to send it in for service.

I have very strange problem with iphone 3gs. Whenever it gets little hot or exposed to 30 degree or above temperature it losses signals (No service). Whenever it is cooled down the service is back. Whenever I am using Skype or playing game for a while it losses carrier signals and wifi. When it is cooled down afer shutting down the carrier signals and wifi are back. It is for sure problem is with heating, but 30 degree tempeature in Oman is normal and some time it goes upto 50 degrees. I have noticed this has started after I started using substandard charger as I lost my original charger of the phone. Please help!! Thanx.

The specifications define an operating range up to 35 degrees.

  • Strange color temperature when using iSight

The image generated by my iSight always tends to have a "yellow" tone to it. Can the color temperature be adjusted somewhere? I compared images obtained under the same lighting by colleagues and the color temp with their Macbooks is more blue/white. It is frustrating to always look jaundiced!

iSight color is set automatically by the app that runs it and is effected by room lighting and even reflections from your monitor, room decor, floor, and wall coverings.
I can suggest two ways to change the color of your images:
    (1) Use only one color of light in the room, and adjust it by changing lamps if necessary. See Apple's article at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3097
This single room light color includes reflections from your monitor. I change my System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Desktop to use one of the Solid Gray colors rather than the standard screen color that is installed with Mac OS. The solid, neutral nature of gray greatly reduces the yellow color shift that is automatically applied to correct for a blue or purple desktop. The difference is increasingly notable as room light is reduced.
Tungsten light is very orange-yellow. If your only light source is tungsten and you are still seeing an image that is too yellow, try changing the lamp bulb to one of the daylight-colored fluorescent replacement lamps. After testing four different brands and colors, I found one that works in my room.
    (2) You can take manual control if you add iGlasses2: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iglasses/
You can try before you buy to see if it does what you want.
(10.6 users note that iGlasses is NOT yet compatible.)

  • Satellite P200D-12f PSPBQE - Question about CPU/GFX temperature

    Hey guys,
    Here are the laptop specs:
TOSHIBA Satellite Series P200D-12F Notebook - AMD Turion 64 X2 Processor TL-62 2.1GHz 2MB Cache, 2048MB DDR2-667 SO-Dimm Memory (2x1024), DVD Super Multi writer optical drive, 250 GB SATA, 5400 obr/min, 17.1" WXGA+ TrueBright High Brightness (1440x900 resolution) TFT LCD Display, 10/100 Mbit Ethernet LAN, 802.11b/g wireless LAN, 56K Modem, ATI Radeon HD2600 256MB dedicated graphics, Built-in Harman Kardon stereo speakers, 3.45kg, Bluetooth, integrated webcam, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, 2 Year International Warranty
I cant find any threads or sites that define idle temp for this cpu and graphic card,
in normal stance and high performance/ playing games.
I have an extra cooler (link: http://www.mimovrste.com/artikel/2210016012/hladilnik-za-prenosnik-akasa-ak-nbc-02b ) underneath the laptop. It does help much but still its running on *53C* (celsius) while surfing the internet.
Without that cooler its around 60C. It sounds strange to me.
When i play games on high performance the core temp goes to *63C*, without that xtra coller *+80C!!!!!!*
I clean the heat sinks every 1 month with a huge compressor :)
I dont let any dust in there. I have the laptop like a year now runs great, but still Im interested whats the temperature of our similar models.
I had some "turn off problems" when i didnt have the extra cooler, but now it runs great, but still im not convinced its the "normal" temp. :S
So plz help a lost soul surfing the internet finding nothing to answer his question :)
    tnx

    heya
the problem is i hate vista :) i have installed xp on it. there are no xp drivers for this laptop. i mixed with some similar models same components xp drivers and everything is working well now ;) no yellow thingies in the system window - hardware components. all cool. all games running with no artifact and no weird thingies.
but still im interested in the temperature.
i installed the old Toshiba power saver (win xp) works fine but i dont see any difference with it. no effect. cooling method is on high(as it was on the begging) and no changes. i hoped the vents gonna speed up just a lil bit . but didnt.
how the temp sound to u? high or ok? for an AMD cpu :) the gfx is at 29C :) the cpu runs at 50C surfing internet , while playing games it goes to 63C.

  • My Mac is doing strange things: delaying between users, mouse flickering and bouncing, gets stuck with rainbow wheel flickering. I ran the appel hardware test and it detected an error: 4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1233 Does anybody know what that means? HELP!

My imac is doing strange things:
-delaying between users: when closing session it goes to blue, then takes a while to appear users signin box, and then wont recognize mouse command to enter until a couple of minutes later... then everything seems alright until....
-it gets stuck between things, the rainbow wheel appears and its just delays there forever....
-and every now and then the mouse starts flickering and bouncing wildly onscreen.
I ran the appel hardware test and it detected an error:
    4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1233
Does anybody know what that means? HELP!

WZZZ answered about where to get iStat. And do check the SMART status. If it is an overheating problem due to a fan or logic board problem, your hard drive is possibly cooking itself to death. If so it isn't a faulty hard drive even though the hard drive might fail. So assuming it's a temperature problem, even if you are able to repair things on the disk with software, that is working on symptoms, not causes. I could be wrong however.
RE: AppleCare: Your iMac came with one year of AppleCare (Apple's warranty program), but within the first year you can buy 2 more years. You have to extend by the one year anniversary of purchase of the computer. Your 10,1 is too old to still be in the first year, and since you asked what it was, I'm sure you don't have it. Bottom line meaning is that whatever this problem turns out to be, you'll have to pay for it. Unless there is something like this. It is for 2011 iMacs with certain Seagate drives. You can put in your serial number for fun, but it looks like yours is too old. Lastly, some people have had Apple help them anyway if it is just out of warranty, but many have not. Your machine is one of these. Type in 10,1 in the search box. Is there an Apple Store near you? Just b/c it's out of warranty doesn't mean you shouldn't have it looked at by Apple. But no one here can say at all what Apple will or will not do.
Hope you get it taken care of!

  • MBP Stalling/ Freezing/ Strange Pixelation

As of two nights ago, my Macbook Pro has been behaving very strangely and is currently out of commission. I had been having intermittent battery issues, which I thought were unrelated, but now I don't what to think.
    Here is the situation:
    1. The battery is bad, cycling at 44, won't hold full charge, local store had no parts available.
    2. The night before going to local Apple retailer, dead pixels started appearing and disappearing randomly all over the screen. First it's just a dot here and there, but that soon turned into weird patterns everywhere, as though my display is having an epileptic attack. MBP froze upon start-up and remained that way despite several attempts to restart. Ran disk utility: NO software or hardware problems found.
I finally shut down my laptop and left it alone for several hours. I turned it back in the morning and it seemed fine, a few lightning bolt flashes of dead pixels aside. Apple Store didn't run a diagnostic for whatever reason, went back home, and it got worse.
I keep starting it up only for it to either freeze at the Apple logo, or allow me to log in and have the desktop freeze. I ran another full check via Disc 1 (installer) and still no problems detected.
I was in the middle of backing up my data when my laptop froze again last night. The pixelation comes and goes and my computer stalls at variable points in start up.
Does anyone know what is causing this? (I've unplugged all peripherals, et cetera, removed the battery, and pressed the power putton for fifteen seconds ad nauseam; it's just not doing the trick.) Does anyone know if Apple can back up the remainder of my files if I bring in my external hard drive?
I'd be grateful for any advice on the matter.
    Thanks.

as Tjk said, check what is your graphic card...
    my 2 cents:
it didn't seem to came from it, but I will check temperature and try to experiment cooling more the mac, with smcfancontrol :
as your mbp was better after a night without power, may be it could come from that.
if you're a smoker and use it in a dusty environment , your mac cooling system may be obstructed by dust.
smcfancontrol is a cool way to check what temperature have the mbp.
for your battery !!! : dead at 44 cycles ???
    this is not normal...
are you using a rev A MBP with battery update 1.3 ???
at 44 cycles, you should have a battery with at least 60 % of it's capacity : you should phone to Apple in your country for that, may be they could do something
