Strategy to control hidden features

I am adding some auditing capability to a plug-in so the customer support can collect runtime information from the user while performing troubleshooting.
To control the auditing/logging behavior, I need to know certain information, such as if the logging should be enabled, and where to save the audit file. I could have collect these info from the UI, but we are trying to make this a "hidden" feature, meaning the user will not see the feature from the UI.
So what is the best strategy (cross-platform) to pass parameters to a plug-in to alter its behavior, while it is started? Environment variables? Any existing examples?
Thanks,
Nick

Dirk,
Thanks for the reply. It is a very practical solution. But just for discussion, is it possible to check for certain environment variables in the plug-in?
To make this solution work better, I need to pick a place for this folder. What's the most convenient way to find out the path to the user's home directory or InDesign's installation directory?
Thank you,
Nick

  • What is this hidden "feature" in mobile Safari for and how can I use it?

OK, one day, like any geek would, I was in the car messing with my iPod touch. I was playing in Safari, typing in email addresses and such to get the exciting "WARNING - PHISHING SITE" screen. So I then tried typing "/" into the address bar, and when I hit "go", something interesting happened. The "/" changed to "file:///", and it tried to load it, but then popped up with an error message that said "This page could not be opened because it is a local file". Now I'm not new to the "file:///" thing, and I've used it to access folders using Chrome that Explorer wasn't showing for some reason. So, what if that tag used for? Obviously Apple has a use for it somehow since they included a little shortcut to get to it. I'll post some screenshots below so you can see what everything looks like:
So if this happens to have any use at all, I'd like to know about it!
I also asked this question over here:  http://lockergnome.net/questions/157444/what-is-this-hidden-feature-in-mobile-sa fari-for-and-how-can-i-use-it

That is a shortcut for opening a file locally stored on the iPod. This is not really useful since iOS does not permit such access to its file sustem.

  • Maximizing Window while Control Hidden Doesn't Behave Properly

Hi, I've run into a situation where I'm trying to take advantage of the resizing capabilities of LV8.x and I'm running into a snag I was hoping to get some help on.
Basically, when I have a (grouped) control hidden and then maximize the window and then show the control, the control is not where it should be.
    I've attached an example VI.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Bruce

Resize Window while Control Hidden Test.vi ‏254 KB

    Hello,
When you are resizing your front panel, it only resizes the visible windows. I have tested this out and submitted a corrective action request (CAR #182933). If you want your panel positioned properly, I would suggest forcing the placement of the cluster by adding an event structure for a panel resize event. This will allow you to determine the coordinates of where it should be.

  • Define Derivation Strategy for Control Objects - Value Not Transport

I created Rules Value in Define Derivation Strategy for Control Objects (SPRO). Then, I perform the below steps for Transport the Request to other client.
    1. Select Derivation Strategy name, Table View > Transport
    2. Select Request Number
    3. Click Include in Request, then save
    4. Go to the Steps in Logical Order, Extras > Transport
    5. Select Request Number and back to SPRO screen
After SCC1, there is only Derivation Strategy Name appeared but the rules value (Steps in Logical Order) is not appeared.
How can I transport the Rule Value?
    Regards
    Ton

    Hi,
When you are in the derivation transaction and select to transport it, the system asks you whether you want the values to be transported as well. If you choose 'yes' your change request will include this information.

  • Off Topic: Hidden Features of Java

    Happy Friday everyone,
I stumbled upon this conversation on Stack Overflow last night about "hidden" features of Java. Although I knew about most of them (mostly learned from reading posts here in the past few months), thinking about less-often used features of the language is a fun refresher (at least for me).
Can anybody think of any more "hidden" features of Java? Or just something interesting that not many people are familiar with?
    Here's the link: [http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15496/hidden-features-of-java|http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15496/hidden-features-of-java]
Edit- To make things a bit more interesting, I'll throw some Dukes at people who show me interesting things.

Note that the ordering maintained by a set (whether or not an explicit comparator is provided) must be consistent with equals if it is to correctly implement the Set interface. It bugs me because it's not an explicit requirement of Comparable or Comparable. Therefore, if I did:
    set.add("Hello");
System.out.println(set.contains("World"));I would expect false to be printed (in other words, like HashSet, I would expect it to do a final equals() to make sure). But it's not.
However, in your example, it's easy to see why TreeSet could not possibly allow that. If you added 2 Objects that were comparatively equal, it would be impossible to traverse the tree to find anything.

  • Turning off "Click to activate control" protection feature

I'd like to know how to turn off the "Click to activate

No .. the whole point is that the changed forced upon MS so
    as not to
violate the EOLAS patent means that an interactive activex
    control cannot
come solely from the HTML file (that's what the patent

why some external JavaScript is required. It's nasty, but

Since you've edited a new version based on 3.L it worth an upgrade for me? new features? major compatibility with ssd? thanks for your kind reply and good work!

  • 5D3 min. shutter speed hidden feature / bug

The ISO speed settings - Min. Shutter speed setting allows setting the shutter speed automatically based on focal length of the lens or manually to a certain value.
The on screen help indicates this setting only affects photo mode.
But when shooting video the camera will still use this setting to determine shutter speed.
This feature can be used to slow down shutter speed when using a long lens (on a tripod)
The hidden feature thus is to go back to photo mode and modify the setting to either get a shutter speed in video mode that corresponds to the focal length or equal to e.g. 1/60, which allows for a lower iso value.
The issue being this feature is very usable in video mode, but the camera hides this setting when in video mode, as it assumes this shouldn't affect video.
It would be great if this menu item could be enabled in video mode too for a future firmware release.
From wishlist point of view I think it would be great if the minimum shutter speed could be set to automatically slow down shutter speed when a lens with Image Stabilization in mode on are being used. A setting that allows to drop shutter speed by 1/2 or 1/4 with IS activated can be handheld and nicely interact with Auto ISO.

  • Flash player controls hidden

my flash player controls hidden by taskbar. How do I make flash come down only to top of taskbar? Using Vista, firefox 22 and flash 11.7

That's a Taskbar properties setting NOT a Flash Player setting.
Right click your Taskbar and choose "Properties".
In the Taskbar Properties, UNCHECK "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows". (IF it isn't already unchecked)
UNCHECK "Lock the taskbar". (IF it isn't already unchecked)
    Click Apply and OK.
Your Taskbar WON'T be visible when you view Full Screen videos anymore.

  • Any hidden features? Less obvious controls? Tips and tricks?

I'm generally very impressed with my ipod, but it sometimes feels like it needs one or two more buttons, so that I could access options, properties, settings etc. more easily - or am I missing something?
Are there ways to use the buttons that aren't so obvious? for instance, I would like to be able to find out the length and other properties of a podcast without having to start playing it. I'd also like to be able to mark tracks/podcasts for deletion from within the ipod, rather than having to do it from itunes.
I've managed to find a number of websites talking about how to switch on disk mode, how to install linux and a number of other interesting sounding things, but I don't really want to do any of that with it, I just want a bit more function out of the interface.
I found out the other day that by pressing the centre button repeatedly when it's playing a track I can change the rating and display lyrics (if they've been saved), and I'm hoping there's more to discover too.
Any tips would be much appreciated.

I have put in a suggestion to Apple (via feedback) asking that the Podcast-episode time is displayed on the Podcast menu list, so that it can be seen without starting the Podcast. If other people put in the same suggestion, perhaps Apple will see the need for the function and add it in.
I've also suggested that a different marker be used to indicate a Podcast which I have not completed listening to. Currently, as soon as you begin a Podcast, the blue spot is removed. That's fine, and if I have to stop listening before it's finished, when I go back to the episode, it picks up from where I left off. Trouble is, which ones are they?
Others have already made suggestions here about use of the star system so I will only add that I already use the one-star to remind me which ones to (manually) remove when I next sync. (Because I use auto-sync, I have to manually remove the one-stars, but that's okay - it works for me, it's a neat tip!)
...and as for SithLordDarth's tip - well well, you learn something new every day.

  • Parental control - desired features

I posted the message below to apple TV feedback page and I though I'd share it with you too, and get a penny for your thoughts; perhaps even brainstorm a bit more on the parental control issue, because WE (parents with young children) need a better and easier parental control...
    quote:
"With great power comes great responsibility"... bringing so much digital content to the living room space: movies, music, youtube videos, etc is a quantum leap in our digital entertainment, but this space we share with our young children, thus they need to be effectively protected. Doing this elegantly as well is an art. We want to be able to filter out explicit content (or access to certain rated material, or certain services) easily, securely and hassle free. As of now (version 2.0.2) I can think of TWO reasons why I absolutely don't want the parental control ON (despite the fact that this leaves my young children exposed):
    - First, the password has to be enter EVERY time I access something restricted. You would say that this is quite normal, however I'd say it's quite a hassle. If I am the adult ready to access restricted content, I have the option to either turn off the parental control temporarily.. with the hassle of having to set the pin again after I am done... or, I have to enter the pin every time. If i access the restricted material now.. it makes sense that I will also be the one accessing the next restricted material in 5 minutes from now. It's a reasonable time-locality principle. Apple TV should be "smart" enough to know that I just entered a pin to access something a minute ago.. thus not needing to ask for the pin again. This smartness doesn't have to be necessarily implicit.. it could be explicit: apple tv can ask me for how long should it remember the entered pin.
The solution that I have in mind is a Comcast-like parental control that inhibits the parental control for a period of time. Say, i am planning to use the apple tv for an hour.. then I should be able to inhibit the parental control for that given time. This way, I won't be asked to enter the pin over and over again for everything that is restricted. The implementation that I have in mind is: whenever I want to access something restricted.. i will enter the pin.. then instead of just selecting DONE.. I can have the options to unlock for 1 hour.. 2 hours, 4 hours.. and once. These could be easily accessible via the up/down/left/right buttons on the remote (or browse-able)
    - The second BIG BIG reason why i don't want the parental control ON.. is that the pin is VISIBLE! If we are all planing to watch something (buy a movie, which is a restricted service, let's say) I will have to enter the pin in visible for my young children to see. Of course this pin will have to be changed later on to something else to make sure the parental control stays what it's meant to be.. a parental control. What good it is a parental control with a public pin?
Solution: instead of visible password.. you can allow the option to click the five buttons left/right/up/down/center in a specific order. How many permutation of 5 buttons can we have? 5! = 12*3*45 = 120, but wait... we can press a button multiple times.. so the total number of codes we can enter is.. whatever you want. e.g. if the codes should have 4 "digits", the number of combinations is 5^4 = 625. Anyway, you get the idea. You should absolutely find a way to replace the visible pin with an invisible one.. using the key combinations is one such solution.
Looking more into the future... a biometric sensor on the remote that will unlock the restricted material instantly by just pressing the finger (fingerprint) on the remote would be awesome. Perhaps this won't make it to the next apple tv remote iteration but it is something that apple is aiming for... ultimate simplicity.
Also an accelerometer based remote would also make the browsing the apple tv content a LOT faster and smoother than clicking buttons (wii-like remote perhaps?). Clicking and holding buttons (quite hard to press for my taste) to go down to the bottom of a 200 song list is quite painful.
Also.. one more thing.. it would be nice to have a HOME button similar to the iPhone home.. One click and i'm back to the main menu. Perhaps a double click on the menu button? I hate having to click 5 times to get out of a music location to get to the main menu. Quicker access please!??
all the best and hope to see these new features soon, so we can ALL enjoy our newly purchased Apple TV.
    Thanks.

  • What are the Grid Control basic features  (without the licensed packages)

    Hi everyone,
I'm all new to OEM Grid Control and I've been asked to write a document that sums up and explains all the OEM features (Database ones only).
The reason I created this thread is because I have a problem doing that. Indeed, Oracle insists on their licensed packages in their documentation and doesn't make very clear what's available without any of those packages.
I've been looking for some other documentation than Oracle one but without much success.
I really have to know the features available without those packages because I've been asked to determine whether or not Diagnostic Pack, Tuning Pack and Configuration pack are necessary (i.e If we have to purchase the licenses)
So could anyone tell me precisely what's available without those packages or link me some sources I could use?
Thank you very much in advance
    Olivier

    Hi Erika,
Unfortunately, it appears to be true: to be able to get notifications and alerts, you need to have the Diagnostics Pack license. Reference the following document: Oracle Enterprise Manager Licensing Information 10g Release 4 (10.2.0.4.0) Chapter 2: Enterprise Database Management:
The Diagnostics Pack includes the following features, which you can use after purchasing a license for the Diagnostics Pack.
    Automatic Workload Repository
    Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM)
    Performance monitoring (database and host)
Event notifications: notification methods, rules, and schedules
...In the document that you have cited, I think that "standard" and "out of the box" simply mean that Oracle has these alerts and notifications preconfigured for you when you install the software. But to actually use them, you need to have the appropriate license.
