String to boolean. Help needed.

Hello ppl. Im here concerning my method for deleting files. I've got a bit of a difficulty....
The method returns a String, becuase if an exception occurs it will return it, however if no exception occurs it returns true, as a String tho:
return "true";
Is there anyway to parse a string to a boolean value inside the method? or the invoking method?
Method:
public String delFile(String file){
String error = null;
File f = null;
if(file!=null){
try {
f = new File(file);
f.delete();
} catch(SecurityException se){
error = se.getMessage();
if(error!=null) return error;
return "true";
Help appreciated. Thanks.

Can I implement the custom exception method in the
same class as the delFile() method?I think you got me wrong. You could do it like this:
(1) Define your special exception class, which should
be defined in a seperate file ("MyFileException.java")
package myFileHandlingPackage;
import java.io.*;
public class MyFileException extends Exception{
public final static int FILE_NOT_FOUND = 0;
public final static int FILE_NAME_NULL = 1;
public final static int NO_DELETION_PERMISSION = 2;
private final static String[] messages;
static{
   messages[] = new String[3];
   messages[0] = "The specified file could be found";
   messages[1] = "The file name was not specified";
   messages[2] = "You have no permission to delete the file";
private int errorCode = -1;
private File errorFile;
public MyFileException(){
   super();
public MyFileException(String msg){
   super(msg);
public MyFileException(int errorCode, File errFile, String msg){
   MyFileException(msg);
   this.errorCode = errorCode;
   this.errorFile = errFile;
public String getNiceMessage(){
   String niceMsg = "";
   if(errorCode != -1 && errorCode < 3){
     niceMsg += messages[errorCode];
     niceMsg += " ";
     niceMsg += errFile.getName();
   return niceMsg;
}(2) import this class in your JSP and in the file you defined your
delFile() method.
(3) now you can use a catch(MyFileException mfe){...} in your JSP
Hope that helps

  • Help needed with if statement in a method

    Hi Ive created 2 string arrays. One holds a one digit user id no. and the other holds a 4 digit pin number. Ive then written a method which should take the userId no that has been sent to the method in the UserCode parameter find the same number in the custid array if it does it should then check the same position of the pin array and check that the pin number matches the pin no. the method has received in PINCode parameter.
    At the moment my method receives the parameters checks the userId no. but doesnt move on and check the PIN array.
    Any help would be great as Ive been staring at this for days now and I cant see the wood from the trees!
    public boolean checkPinAndUserId(String pinCode, String userCode)
              boolean found = false;
              for (int i = 0; i < userId.length; i++)
                   if (userCode.equals(userId))
                        if (pinCode.equals(pin[i]))
                                  found = true;
                        return found;

    I've posted my code in full so hopefully everyone can see exactly what I have been doing.
    Note - my code uses the observer/observable model. The method I am having the problem with the if statement is in the class HSBC as are the string arrays. in the class ATM in the action performed PINInput button events section, when the pin count reaches 4 it sends the parameters over to the HSBC checkpin&userid method.
    I've used the System.out.println() statements to see what's going on and it receives the parameters checkes the userid array but does not move on to check that the pin parameter matches the pin array?
    Any help would be great - Hope this helps.

  • Help needed:Printing HTML file using javax.print

    Hi
    I am using the following code which i got form the forum for rpinting an HTML file.
    The folllowing code is working fine, but the problem is the content of HTML file is not getting printed. I am geeting a blank page with no content. What is the change that is required in the code? ALso is there any simpler way to implement this. Help needed ASAP.

    Ram,
    I have had printing problems too a year and a half ago. I used all printing apis of java and I still find that it is something java lacks. Now basically you can try autosense. To check whether your printer is capable of printing the docflavor use this PrintServiceLookup.lookupPrintServices(flavor, aset); . If it lists the printer then he can print the document otherwise he can't. I guess that is why you get the error.

  • String parsing - better solution needed :-(

    Hi Folks,
    Basically I will be taking in a string that represents the name of the output file the user wants, this will be specified in an xml file. The issue I have is that it needs to have non-static elements as part of the name as well (like a timestamp). This can come from two places: 1) the applications map 2)Predefined list of functions. Anything that will be comng from the map will have square brackets around it [], whilst anything the refers to a function will be inside curly brackets {}.
    So I may get a string in the form: filename_[user.id]_{datestamp}.pdf
    This should be output in a file called: filename_12345_2811208.pdf
    My issue is with evaluating the string, to determine what needs to be left as is, replaced with a value from a function, or replaced with a value from the map. I have looked at tokenizing the string and using indexof, but these are more trouble than they are worth. My current solution is, to have 4 booleans- one representing an open and close bracket of each type. When two matching booleans are true (i.e. detected an open and closed square bracket) take the sub-string between the brackets (to do this I use two ints representing the index of the brackets), evaluate it and append it to the output string.
    I have tested this and it works- but I was wondering if there is some other method that works better, as quite frankly my solution is the sort of embarassing crud you would see from a first year student programmer. Any help at all would be massively appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Max

    Hi swmtgoet_x,
    Thanks for the speedy reply- and your understanding of the problem is spot on.
    I had looked at the replace method- the only issue with that is that I have no way of knowing which value the users will want from the map (depending on how they have it implemented there could be hundreds of things in there), so to search the string for any value in the map would be hugely ineffecient :-(
    But having said that- I could look at using that approach for "pre-defined function"- I don't think there will be many of these, but in typical fashion no one has seen fit to gove me a list yet.....so I get to guess. :-s

  • Some help needed for shopping calculator program

    Hi. I would like to thank you in advance for helping me. At the moment I am pretty much stuck. I don't know how to add the input using 'while loop'. This is what I'm suppose to do:
    Write a program called ShoppingCalculator.java that allows the user to enter the prices of several items they have bought and then tells them the total amount. The user can enter the prices for as many items as they want, until they click Cancel. The program should then output the total amount they spent, in a message dialog box. Use pounds for all the amounts.
    So far I have written:
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class ShoppingCalculator
        public static void main(String[] args)
                boolean done = false;
                double amount;
                String input;
                while (!done)
                        input = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter the amount you spent on the next item:");
                        amount = Double.parseDouble (input);
                if (done = true)
                        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog (null, "You spent a total amound of £" + amount  );
    }Sorry if the code doesn't make much sense cause I've been changing the code around so many times that.
    At one point when I was playing around with the code, I manage to make the input dialog loop nicely but when I pressed cancel, the message dialog only output the last input I put in. What I'm really stuck here is I need to know how to add the input when using 'while loop' and is it correct to use the IF Statement on this program. Please give me some advice on how to and I will try to work on it again.

    Ok. I have edit the code and this is what it looks like:
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class ShoppingCalculator
        public static void main(String[] args)
                boolean done = false;
                double amount;
                String input;
                double total = 0;
                while (!done)
                        input = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter the amount you spent on the next item:");
                        amount = Double.parseDouble (input);
                            if (input == null)
                                        total = total + amount;
                                        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog (null, "You spent a total amound of " + total  );
    }I created another variable (total) and it even compiled. The only problem I have now is the message dialog wouldn't show at the end. When I press cancel and nothing happen. This is what I get on my output command window:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
    at sun.misc.FloatingDecimal.readJavaFormatString(FloatingDecimal.java:991)
    at java.lang.Double.parseDouble(Double.java:510)
    at ShoppingCalculator.main(ShoppingCalculator.java:23)
    Java Result: 1
    Anything that isn't right here?

  • IO File help needed

    Hello all,
    Here is my situation, I need to create an object, populate the object with data, and then store the object in a linked list. The object is created in a reference class that I created, and the data for the object is being read in from a .txt file. My problem is that I am opening the link to the .txt file from my driver class, but can't seem to get the readLine() to work in the reference class. Here is what I have:
    Driver Class:

        BufferedReader in = null;
        try
          LinkedList playerList = new LinkedList();
          in = new BufferedReader( new FileReader( "PlayerStats.txt" ) );
          BaseballPlayer player = new BaseballPlayer();
          while(morePlayers == true)
            player.newPlayer();
            playerList.add(player);
          for (i = 0; i < playerList.size(); i++)
            System.out.println(playerList.get(i));
        catch (Exception e)

    Hi everyone
    Programming help needed here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
    I have been assigned some work for a program called Processing 1.0 availale at http://processing.org/download
    I was give the 9 individual programs I needed to make however they were converted to Java files from .pde files. The program is based on Java but only runs .pde files and NOTHING else!
    I decompiled the files and got the source code, but it is a slight variation of the original someone made in processing, and needs some tidying to get it to run.
    I think the programs are very simple for a programmer, although I AM NOT.
    CODE is BELOW
    // Decompiled by DJ v3.10.10.93 Copyright 2007 Atanas Neshkov Date: 02/05/2009 13:15:00
    // Home Page: http://members.fortunecity.com/neshkov/dj.html http://www.neshkov.com/dj.html - Check often for new version!
    // Decompiler options: packimports(3)
    // Source File Name: Assign2_1.java
    import processing.core.PApplet;
    public class Assign2_1 extends PApplet
    public Assign2_1()
    SquareSide = 20;
    Rank = Nums.length;
    Side = SquareSide * Rank;
    Green = color(0, 255, 0);
    Yellow = color(255, 255, 0);
    BG = Yellow;
    public void setup()
    size(Side, Side);
    background(BG);
    fill(Green);
    for(int i = 0; i < Rank; i++)
    rect(i * SquareSide, 0.0F, SquareSide, SquareSide * Nums);
    public static void main(String args[])
    PApplet.main(new String[] {
    "--bgcolor=#ece9d8", "Assign2_1"
    int Nums[] = {
    6, 14, 8, 9, 2, 3, 4, 2, 8, 3,
    9, 2, 0, 5
    int SquareSide;
    int Rank;
    int Side;
    int Green;
    int Yellow;
    int BG;

    HELP NEEDED PLEASEShouting is a good way ensure you don't get help. Also you should give a meaningful subject.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!I suggest you ask a question after providing enough information to be able to answer it.
    Also use CODE tags when posting code as it make the code more readable.
    We are more likely to help people who are trying to learn Java rather than someone who might be looking for an easy way out of doing an assignment.

  • Help Needed With Scrollbar and Content

    I'm having a difficult time with the Scrollbar component. I'm trying to have a scrollbar set up to navigate a text field or a MC of a text field. I managed to get it functioning within the desired frame, however when I jump to another frame, that very same content appears on the other frame, despite the fact that said frame did not have the scrollbar nor the content pasted within.
    The bar seems to do what I want it to do save for the unwelcomed presence outside of the frame of choice. Here's the code I'm using. This is the keyframe code:
    import boppreh.ui.Scrollbar
    var scrollbar1:Scrollbar = new Scrollbar(boomboom, 500, true, false, 293, bar, slider, arrowUp, arrowDown)
    addChild(scrollbar1)
    scrollbar1.x = 50
    scrollbar1.y = 50
    And this is the code found in the AS file:
    package boppreh.ui
        import flash.display.*
        import flash.events.*
        import flash.geom.Rectangle;
        import flash.utils.Timer
        import flash.ui.Keyboard

    Any help would be appreciated. I've been stuck here all day.

This is the keyframe code:
    import boppreh.ui.Scrollbar
    var scrollbar1:Scrollbar = new Scrollbar(boomboom, 500, true, false, 293, bar, slider, arrowUp, arrowDown)
    addChild(scrollbar1)
    scrollbar1.x = 50
    scrollbar1.y = 50
    And this is the code found in the AS file:
    package boppreh.ui
        import flash.display.*
        import flash.events.*
        import flash.geom.Rectangle;
        import flash.utils.Timer
        import flash.ui.Keyboard

  • How can I convert a String into boolean?

    I am facing difficulty in converting String into boolean.
    For example, I have a few variable which i need user to input yes or no as the answer. But I uses string instead. Is there a way which i can ask them to input boolean directly?
    Please advise...
    credit = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter Yes or No for Credit Satisfactory : ");
    System.out.println("The answer for Credit Satisfactory : "+credit);
    e_invtry=JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter Yes or No for inventry level");
    System.out.println("The answer for Quantity Order : "+e_invtry);

    Thanks...but I don't get it....I tried to use your
    suggestion but i got the message that " cannot find
    symbol method
    showConfirmDialog(java.lang.String,int)" ???
    Please advise.
    The code I use was :
    int credit = JOptionPane.showConfirmDialog("Enter Yes
    or No for credit satisfactory",
    JOptionPane.YES_NO_OPTION);Well that was not the example I gave you.
    JOptionPane has no method showConfirmDialog that receives a String and an int (exactly what the error message is telling you).
    What was wrong with the version I showed you?

  • Help needed regarding regular expressions

    hello
    i need to write a program that recieves a matematical expression and evaluates
    it...in other words a calculator :)
    i know i need to use regular expressions inorder to determine if the input is legal or not ,but i'm really having trouble setting the pattern
    the expression can be in the form : Axxze2223+log(5)+(2*3)*(5+4)
    where Axxze2223 is a variable(i.e a combination of letters and numbers.)
    where as: l o g (5) or log() or Axxx33aaaa or () are illegal
    i tried to set the pattern but i got exceptions or it just didnt work the way i wanted it .
    here's what i tried to do at least for the varibale form:
    "\\s*(*([a-zA-Z]+\\d)+)*\\s*";
    i'm really new to this...and i can't seem to set the pattern by using regular expressions,how can i combine all the rules to one string?
    any help or references would be appreciated
    thanks

    so i'll explain
    let's say i got token "abc22c"(let's call it "token")
    i wan't to check if it's legal
    i define:
    String varPattern = "\\s*[a-zA-Z]+\\d+\\s*";If you want to check a sequence of ASCII characters, longer than one, followed by a single digit, the whole possibly surrounded by spaces -- yes.
    >
    now i want to check if it's o.k
    so i check:
    token.matches(varPattern);
    am i correct?Quite. It's better to compile the Pattern (Pattern.compile(String)), create a java.util.regex.Matcher (Pattern#matcher(CharSequence)), and test the Matcher for Matcher#matches().
    (Class.method -> static method, Class#method -> instance method)
    >
    now i'm having problem defining pattern for log()
    sin() cos()
    that brackets are mandatory ,and there must be an
    expression inside
    how do i do that?First, I'd check the overall function syntax (a valid name, brackets), then whether what's inside the brackets is a valid expression (maybe empty), then whether that expression is valid for that function (presumably always?).
    I might add I'm no expert on parsing, so that's more a supposition than a guide.
