(stupid) printing question

The answer to this may be obvious but I'll ask anyway...
I have a Canon i9900 printer with 4x6, 5x7, and 8.5 x 11 paper. I have a picture I need to print with a final size of 3.5 x 5.
Is it possible to specify a print size that's different from the paper size in Aperture? (I'm assuming the best way is to print the 3.5 x 5 image on 4 x 6 paper & cut it down.)
is it better to do this in Photoshop? (How would I do it?)
Thanks-

yes, in the print image dialog, "paper size" determines the size paper (don't forget to click on "printer settings" if you need to make some printer specific choices).
again in the print image dialog box, in Layout Options, click on the "scale to" box and select "custom scale." enter your 3.5 X 5.
obviously, you will need to cut this down.

  • Image Printing Question

    Hello,
Bottom line summary: How do I use the Media and Quality setting to get a good image?
I have an image printing question for an HP 8600 Office. I am trying to get a decent quality image to print
on regular paper. I gather that I will not get the quality of a photo printer. I gather I'm supposed to use
HP glossy paper. Please read on ...
Images come out grainy (rastery) when embedded from an MSPaint project, and if I use Word. However when I printed just an image from image viewer it came like a photo ... but I can't remember what I did. It definitely is capable of printing better. My cartridges all check out, etc. I did the Print Quality Report ... I sure wish I could get that quality when I print other things.
I tried messing with different settings from the Print - Preference. The Quality (Best, Normal, Draft) doesn't effect the outcome. I tried going into Print - Preference - Media and it makes a difference. I can't figure out which is the best setting for plain paper ... but it's not plain paper. The image rendering algorithm appears to be different for different Media settings. I also tried setting the Advanced Resolution to Maximum DPI. I haven't been totally methodical about this as I was in a rush.
I see that the printer is being "smart", perhaps a little too smart.
    So my question is multipart:
    - Is there documenation on the what the Print - Preference - Media settings do?
    - How do I get it to not use grainy/rastery image method, but use the nicer photo method?
    - Should I print Maximum DPI?
    Thanks,
    - Dave -

Hi @DaveGold , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I hope you had a great holiday!
I see you're looking into photo setup options. I'd like to help!
First I'd recommend this document on Changing Print Settings in Windows 7.  This document should show all the settings you're looking into.
Also, another thing to keep in mind, when you select 'best print quality' and 'photo paper'. It will only be as good as the source image.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • Before I buy: speed and printer questions

I am looking to buy a new TC 500gb version to replace my linksys WRT54G. To upgrade the wireless router as well as start a backup system I have yet to ever initiate.
    Two questions/concerns come up:
#1) After the initial back up to TC I understand there are hourly incremental back ups - Can that time interval be adjusted, and how long does that back up take (I do now add much data/ files to my main Comp usually) also during those incremental back ups does that affect the computer much, such as if I am playing an internet game, will I lag out while it is backing up every hour?
#2) Setting up a printer through usb port to be accessed by my home network. My HP C6180 all in one works fine being seen through the aged, but battle tested linksys, any reason it shouldn't work with the TC?
Thanks for any insights you might have in this regard.
I have cable isp access, My Main Comp is where the cable modem and TC would be, I have a G4, a G5 and a MBP scattered around the house accessing via wireless.

Hi Steven, welcome to the discussions.
After the initial backup (recommend that you use ethernet for this), TC will backup incrementally every hour assuming you will be using Time Machine. There is no way to alter this with Apple software, but a number of users have reported satisfaction with Time Machine Editor, http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/, which will allow you to schedule backups whenever you would like. This might be a good solution if you notice slow downs with other devices during a backup session.
Backups should be relatively quick, but be aware that very small changes in some programs (like Entourage, vmFusion, Parallels) require the entire database to be backed up, not just the small change that might have been made.
The printing question is the most difficult as the boards are busy with users who are having troubles in this regard. Perhaps some other users have used the same HP and can comment. Bear in mind that if your HP is compatible, only the printing function will work through the network. Scanning and other advanced functions are not supported.

  • Stupid PDF Question:  What's the difference between "Save As PDF" and Printing to a PDF "printer"?

    Is there a quality difference?
The "Save As" seems to run Distiller, but if I select "Print Document" and select "Adobe PDF" as the printer, it also seems to work OK, although I sometimes get a "Times" font not available, will be replaced by "Times New Roman", even though I can't find any reference to "times" in my book.
Is there an advantage to running Distiller?
    Thanks!
    John

    > Is there a quality difference?
I'd expect them (as well as print-to-Ps & Distill) to be the same for the same settings.
We print to Ps & Distill, for several reasons, not all of which may apply to you:
More control. Distilling provides menus for everything Adobe lets you control in PDF gen. Print/SaveAs may not (and don't in our environment).
Faster printing (Frame doesn't have to wait for the tps to pdf gen). You can get back to work while a long job renders.
Unequal versions/different platforms. We author on FM8/Unix and Distill on Acro9/PC.
    > ... although I sometimes get a "Times" font not available, will be replaced by "Times New Roman", even though I can't find any reference to "times" in my book.
Save the component files to MIF and examine with a plaintext editor. If not found, the font invocation is probably coming in with a text inset, or a graphic of type DWG, DXF, EPS, PDF or possibly SVG.

  • Please help: large scale Printing question

A Client asked me to do a backdrop for a play that is 10' high by 18' wide. She wont give me the number of where shes getting it printed from for some stupid reason so i cant ask them directly, my question which is this: What size and format should my photoshop file be in for large scale printing like that? Right now my file is 10" high by 18" wide and 300dpi. and its a Psd right now of course. Any help would be awesome.

    hu instinct,
Basically, when scaled the artwork has identical appearences at identical proportional distances  (looks as if it has the same resolution); in other words: when you look at a 1:1 print of your present 10x18" artwork at a certain distance, the 10x18' backdrop will look the same to the audience/actors/instructor/whoever at 12 times the distance, so if it looks nice to you at 1' or 1.5' or2', it will look just as nice to them at 12' or 15' or 18'.

  • HP C6180 AIO Printer question

I've gotten one of the above and love it's being aboe the print wirelessly. My issue is with the drivers. It seems that I can get but one brint quality and don't have the ability to opt for b&W or Color.
Am I missing something in the settings and the software? I've checked HP's site and they are no help.
    Any Help will be appreciated.

    Hello John,
I finally got the 6180, an upgrade from a 2210 model. It still worked wonderfully, but the times just caught up with it.
About the 6180: compaired to the previous one it is absolutely wonderful. I've had no real problems. It fit into the network like a champ. The Linksys Router went south and there was no problem setting it up on usb. I could have set it up with the eithernet, but the usb was more handy. As for the speed. I've never had to do 32 pages, so not sure if it would do it in 60 seconds. It is very fast one the economy modes. Fax to email fine, though I have question on how to get it to send a document as an attachment in .mail/apple mail. It sends as an attachement in Entourage. Couldn't find anything about it in .mail preferences. If anyone can help with that, please do.
In short, John, I love it.
    Larry Jay
Does the 6180 perform as advertised? 32PPM? Scan to
Mac? Print docs from the Web & Preview without issue?
All via the Airport as a wireless server? How's the
    print quality now?
Leaving an HP 6110 that has all of these issues that
were HP driver/software problems. I wasn't happy with
HP ignoring the issues and vowed I wouldn't buy
another, but if this is all correct, I'll probably
    reconsider.

  • Printing questions on AIO 8500, choice of paper and settings..

    hi,
so i recently purchased  the officeje all-in-one 8500.  i installed the printer and was going to use hp primium photo paper to test out some picture printing.  but when it came time to choose what paper type it was, i couldn't find one that match perfectly..  there was 'Advance Photo Paper' that was not it, 'HP Photo Paper Matte'..  that was not it.  'HP Primium Inject Paper', that doesn't seem it.  what do i choose?
my 2nd question is  what is the best setting to use for best printing?  i only try a couple sheets.  i didn't want to waste ink trying every possible combination.  but using 'Advance Photo Paper' and best setting, the picture turned out SUPER dark.  print quality was great but everything, especially the dark colors, turned out super dark.  using same paper, and 'normal' quality setting, the print quality was crap, but the color was more true to the actual picture color.
any help, suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,

  • IPAD and UPdate to Airprint Printer question Help Please?

I have an HP 6500 printer that I utilize with my MacbookPro (from 2007) and it operates just fine wirelessly using WiFi at home. I did note  though that my iPod cannot print to the printer as the printer IS NOT AIRPRINT equipped.
    MY QUESTION?
I am considering purchasing an IPAD MINI (RETINA)equipped with KeyNote, Pages, etc., and am wondering If I invest in an AIRPRINT equipped printer in order to enable printing from the IPAD MINI, will I also still be able to print from my Macbook Pro (2007) which is not equipped with anything that interfaces with AIRPRINT to my new AIRPRINT printer? In other words, is this reversed engineered to allow printing from an older laptop to a brand new AIRPRINT printer?
Hope you can help, so I don't waste money on a new printer and an IPAD only to find out I can no longer use my LapTop (MacbookPro) to print.
    Thanks you for any help.
    Charles

    Thanks, Jim.
Going to give it a try, Now, after reading all the reviews on the various HP and Epson model all-in-one printers, my next chore will be to make the actual selection. It seems that there as many people who love each unit as there are who hate each unit. Confusing, but I will digest it over the next several days and make a choice.
    Thanks again,

  • IMovie and iDVD, Stupid Upgrade Questions, Sorry Must Ask

Okay, the deal is I have a PowerMac G4 Version 2.1 with a Combo Drive. I am upgrading to Mac OSX 3.0 so I can do certain things in iMovie and acquire a better browser. (My constraints on the iMovie project about which I've been inquiring are that at least 40 people have been waiting for copies of it for about a month and wondering why I don't come through with it--I sent a lengthy explanation to the guy who'll be duplicating it in case anyone asks. That's one reason I'm in such a hurry I have to ask urgent questions at forums and newsgroups and don't take the time to read every word ever written on every one of these systems and their various applications, abilities, and uses.)
I started out thinking I was about one step from having a completed project and the more I learn, the more grim the situation looks. Yet I've done ALL THIS WORK already to create beautiful titles and elaborately-edited outtakes. I HATE to ditch it all if any faint hope flickers into sight!
My Mac came with the following:
iMovie 3.0.3 -- which seems to be working fine, only problem is, due to deficiencies in other equipment, I'm having trouble getting my movie to DVD or into any other form where it can be played anywhere outside the Mac!
iDVD 2.1 -- My feeble brain, inadequate as it may be, has so far gathered the information that to go to DVD, a project can't be played in iMovie and sent straight to a DVD burner (can it?) There has to be some intermediary step. (Right?) People have argued the various merits of iDVD vs. Toast to accomplish this step. I hadn't opened my copy of iDVD because I am in no way near the point of being ready to make a DVD--I have not yet finished editing the project in iMovie. I made the hideous error of ASSUMING that since this came installed in my Mac, it would work fine when needed, just as iMovie did. When I tried to open it just to see what version I had, it wouldn't open and told me this:
    System Requirements
iDVD 2 requires a PowerMac G4 computer with 256 Megs of RAM, a built-in DVD-R Superdrive and Mac OS 10.1.3 or later.
Stupid redundant bonus question #1: WHY would this come installed on a Mac which lacks the hardware to use it? (iMovie could still be used to edit, and then copy projects--if I had a digital video camera--which I don't. The only other way we've figured is to send it back through the Canopus ADVC110 converter I used to get the video in there, and play it out to a VCR--a cumbersome process I've been assured will result in crummy quality.)
Okay, here are the REAL questions:
    1. I don't suppose there's any way the Canopus could be connected to the DVD burner and the information sent to a DVD that way? Just asking.
    2. Obviously the upgrade isn't going to fix things to make iDVD work, as I'm already using Mac OSX 10.2.8, so I would assume its discontent stems from not having the Superdrive--at least, it was complaining something about inadequate hardware and I think that's what it meant. Will connecting a DVD burner via FireWire convince iDVD to work (either automatically or after some sort of tweaking), or am I stuck replacing the drive? I bought a DVD burner the minute I realized my drive was a Combo Drive and not a Superdrive (which is the first time I stuck a blank DVD in it and nothing happened) before learning details about this intermediary step and that there is more than one way to accomplish it.
    3. Is it even worth replacing the Combo Drive with a Superdrive or is it more worth buying a whole new Mac? If I am FORCED to buy a new Mac, what should I do with the old one? (Not only am I ethically opposed to tossing a perfectly good piece of electronic equipment into the ravine, I might get fined for littering. Can a good home be found for it? For that matter it would be a pain as I've saved all sorts of stuff to the Hard Drive which would have to be transferred to the new one before I could get rid of the old one. So can I keep the old one...PLEASE?)
    4. After making the system upgrade, will I be able to bypass iDVD entirely by using Toast, or does Toast also have all sorts of requirements my hardware does not possess so I'll still be SOL, stuck replacing drives or even the whole Mac, or going directly to crummy-quality VHS as there is NO OTHER WAY OUT?
    5. After making the system upgrade, would I be ready for more advanced versions of iMovie and iDVD? Are any upgrades free, or does every improvement cost? Do I get them all at the Apple site, order some of them from some supplier or other the way I did with the Mac OSX upgrade, or what?
Thanks for helping to clear up my massive confusion!!!

Wow, thanks. It's good to know iDVD is still an option, even if I don't buy the Superdrive (is that even possible, to get the Combo Drive taken out of my current Mac and a Superdrive put in? There's a question still unanswered.)
(I think this is good to know--because part of my reasoning in asking the question was to eliminate one option or the other, and now I'm ending up with options of options, but hold on for Part 2 as I do have some questions concerning the capabilities of iDVD and Toast.)
Partly answering one of my own questions (although I'd appreciate confirmation from someone who actually knows,) if these Toast 7 requirements mean what I think they do, I don't see anywhere that it says the computer MUST have a Superdrive and CAN'T use an external DVD burner!
    Toast 7 Titanium
    Requirements:
    * PowerPC G4 processor or faster (G5 recommended for viewing DivX files on your Mac)
    * PowerPC G3 processor and Mac OS 10.2 users, see Toast 6 Titanium or Popcorn
    * Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later
    * 300 MB of free disk space to install
    * Up to 15 GB of temporary free disk space during usage
    * QuickTime 7 or later
    * CD or DVD burner and recordable media
If this is true (that I can use an external DVD burner) I like Toast already! My Quicktime Player is only version 6.5.2--is it going to be difficult, expensive, or both, to upgrade that? If it is or the other System Requirements are not met I can just go with Toast 6.
As far as those requirements, I promise you I don't understand a word of it but here is what my System Profiler says my Mac has. Maybe someone can make sense of it and help me decide which version of Toast to get or, if not, what to do:

One thing which may really sway me in favor of Toast is, will it make possible burning 2-hour DVDs? Supposedly iDVD will not enable anything longer than 90 minutes, and when I get to the other big project for which I really want to use the Canopus ADVC 110 converter, that is, converting my home movies from either VHS or 8mm video camera tape to DVD--well, ALL of my tapes are two hours long, because that's the way they come!! I don't see being limited to making 90-minute DVDs as anything but another GIANT PAIN of which I'm already amply supplied! So if Toast will fix this dilemma I'm ALL FOR IT!
As always, thanks for help and advice.

  • A Few LR4 Printing Questions

Have a few questions pertaining to the new features in v4:
    1. In the past we created layouts with all the page and print settings embedded. Is the recommended workflow now to just create the layout with the page settings and then create a saved print collection with the print settings?
    2. If you create a virtual copy and put that through soft proofing and make settings, is the paper profile you used for those settings embedded in the virtual copy?
    3. If the paper profile is embedded in your proof copy and you accidently add it to a print collection which has a different profile specified, which profile setting takes precedence (or do you get an error alert)?
    Thanks!
    Jim

    Hi Jim,
    1. The collection resulting from saved print helps you with custom package: because it saves the images to go in your custom pages as well. Like a snapshot. Before you had the layout/template and the images still separate to drag them again in ... at least that was all I had achieved previously.
    2. If you make a "proof copy" (not just any virtual copy), yes.
    3. I remember from another post in beta-forum, no own hands-on experience: You can easily create hurtful contradictions by that. Print collection profile takes precedence, and there is no warning.

  • Photo/print question

Another likely "dumb question" from a rookie ID user:
I've imported a photo and the color looks off (on my screen) -- should I be concerned about photo print quality?
The photo seems to look OK when printed off my printer, but it will eventually be printed via some type of offset printing (as I understand it)
P.S. I haven’t researched this much, so if there are answers out there and you can point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it.
    ID-CS4 6.0.3
    Mac OS X 10.5.7

The only way you can come close to knowing what the color will look like is to calibrate and profile the monitor (use a colorimeter), and preview using the appropriate output space as the proof setup.
You absolutely should ask to see a printed contract proof of the job from the printer -- not a PDF or JPEG proof, because they will look different on your monitor unless the calibration is done -- that they guarantee to match in the actual print run.

  • IPhoto 6 card printing question

Hi, this may be a dumb question, but I spent over an hour and I couldnt figure it out.
Ok, so I made a card in iPhoto 6, size 7'' x 10''. It is a double-sided card. So, I print one side, feed the paper in again, and print the other side.
The problem is, I can't set the card to print centered on the paper, and thus, printing it double sided and cropping the paper will force me to cut off some of the card, and the fold wont line up right. I need this to print centered so the margins will be even, and thus, I can print double-sided properly.
    Thanks for any help/response
    PowerBook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I have a similar problem, & am waiting for this to be answered properly by someone who can help allof us.
Using iPhoto5 (Dec. 2005) I was able to print my photos to 7x10 greeting cards all properly centered on the card -to then fold it in half for a greeting card. Now in iPhoto 6 (the same settings as used in iPhoto5) do not print out properly centered on the card. In preview it shows properly, but it does not come out that way. I am using the same printer - Epson R200 - as with iPhoto5). Another person has a Lexmark & can't get the right print out setting with iPhoto 6 either.

  • Preview/Printer question

    Hey guys,
I don't know if this is the proper forum to ask this, but if ANYONE can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it!! This may sound like a petty thing to ask, but I am taking a class and the professor is expecting us to print almost 30 pages worth of slides for notes to bring to class. (I would handwrite them all down in my notebook but she goes over her lectures too darn fast for me to write every word down.)
SO my question is this: How do I change the color preference on Preview before printing?? Some of classmates in my class can print them on grayscale/black and white, assuming they are NOT Mac or Apple owners, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this! It won't open w/ anything else, bc I thought if I could "trick" it to open on Pages or Keynote I can print in black and white to save ink. But it won't and this can't go on throughout the semester or else my printer ink will die soon!
    Any help/suggestions?
    Thanks!
PS. If I should post this elsewhere, let me know. I wasn't sure where to ask this question other than here since I have the Leopard on my computer right now.

Hi Luce, this is fine likely.
Depends on Printer & Drivers, but look for something like these in the Print Dialog...
Then op at Presets, choose Save As... B&W Only.
