Stupid technology...

OMG, the most stupidest thing happens... when I start up iTunes, it like downloads one or two subscription podcasts, and then freezes! This happens whether my 5 gen video is plugged in or not! I'm really hoping that the computer hasn't gotten a bug or whatever, but possibly something is just wrong with the connection... any help would be appreciated!!!

iTunes doesn't run on Windows ME.
Okay, thanks, and this may sound stupid, but I don't know what model or anything my computer is, but iTunes ran absolutely fine the first 3 1/2 weeks!

So I had about 200 notes on my iPod and I chose to sync them to my Mail account application (Mac), but only 28 appeared from about the last month. I don't know where the other ones went. Do you know how I can get them back?
I've synced notes from my ipod to my mail account before about 1 month ago, but since then, some of those were edited on my iPod btw.
I have a saved version of those notes from a month ago in a written document, but I lost some important edited stuff. Is there anyway that I can convert that written document that has my notes back into my iPod? ):
I've checked my trash in the Mail btw.
I dont know if an ipod backs up when it syncs, but I mistakenly backed it up again and restored from back-up and now I think there's no way to get my notes back. Stupid technology ):. Is there any way I can review previous back-ups or get my notes back?
I feel dead in the inside )))):. Those notes have priceless value to me.

You may want to check this article on how to restore your iPod notes.

The drive is probably formatted using the Windows NT filesystem; Mac OS X can't write to this format without additional software. If desired, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase it.
If it's formatted as MS-DOS, FAT32, or exFAT, run a disk repair utility on it.

  • Home movies freeze at same point

    Hi,
I hope that someone can help.
I have broken my daughter's wedding video into 6 episodes. These are in MP4 format. I use Add File to Library to import into iTunes.
Then on my apple TV I can play these movies but they always freeze at exactly the same point a few minutes in.
Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening.
I have updated apple TV to latest software and am running iTunes 11
This is very frustrating - I'm sure that you can imagine all the discussions when the in-laws come round and I can't get all of my 'stupid technology' to work!
    Thanks
    Steve

It was affecting my work iMac as well, and finally I figured it might be my Rules crashing it. I disabled all of them, and the crashing stopped. So at least I've got that much figured out. Now I just need to figure out how to turn the Rules back on without incident.

  • In-Place Element Structures, References and Pointers, Compiler Optimization, and General Stupidity

[The title of this forum is "Labview Ideas". Although this is NOT a direct suggestion for a change or addition to Labview, it seems appropriate to me to post it in this forum.]
In-Place Element Structures, References and Pointers, Compiler Optimization, and General Stupidity
I'd like to see NI actually start a round-table discussion about VI references, Data Value references, local variables, compiler optimizations, etc. I'm a C programmer; I'm used to pointers. They are simple, functional, and well defined. If you know the data type of an object and have a pointer to it, you have the object. I am used to compilers that optimize without the user having to go to weird lengths to arrange it.
The 'reference' you get when you right click and "Create Reference" on a control or indicator seems to be merely a shorthand read/write version of the Value property that can't be wired into a flow-of-control (like the error wire) and so causes synchronization issues and race conditions. I try not to use local variables.
I use references a lot like C pointers; I pass items to SubVIs using references. But the use of references (as compared to C pointers) is really limited, and the implementation is insconsistent, not factorial in capabilites, and buggy. For instance, why can you pass an array by reference and NOT be able to determine the size of the array EXCEPT by dereferencing it and using the "Size Array" VI? I can even get references for all array elements; but I don't know how many there are...! Since arrays are represented internally in Labview as handles, and consist of basically a C-style pointer to the data, and array sizing information, why is the array handle opaque? Why doesn't the reference include operators to look at the referenced handle without instantiating a copy of the array? Why isn't there a "Size Array From Reference" VI in the library that doesn't instantiate a copy of the array locally, but just looks at the array handle?
Data Value references seem to have been invented solely for the "In-Place Element Structure". Having to write the code to obtain the Data Value Reference before using the In-Place Element Structure simply points out how different a Labview reference is from a C pointer. The Labview help page for Data Value References simply says "Creates a reference to data that you can use to transfer and access the data in a serialized way.".  I've had programmers ask me if this means that the data must be accessed sequentially (serially)...!!!  What exactly does that mean? For those of use who can read between the lines, it means that Labview obtains a semaphore protecting the data references so that only one thread can modify it at a time. Is that the only reason for Data Value References? To provide something that implements the semaphore???
The In-Place Element Structure talks about minimizing copying of data and compiler optimization. Those kind of optimizations are built in to the compiler in virtually every other language... with no special 'construct' needing to be placed around the code to identify that it can be performed without a local copy. Are you telling me that the Labview compiler is so stupid that it can't identify certain code threads as needing to be single-threaded when optimizing? That the USER has to wrap the code in semaphores before the compiler can figure out it should optimize??? That the compiler cannot implement single threading of parts of the user's code to improve execution efficiency?
Instead of depending on the user base to send in suggestions one-at-a-time it would be nice if NI would actually host discussions aimed at coming up with a coherent and comprehensive way to handle pointers/references/optimization etc. One of the reasons Labview is so scattered is because individual ideas are evaluated and included without any group discussion about the total environment. How about a MODERATED group, available by invitation only (based on NI interactions with users in person, via support, and on the web) to try and get discussions about Labview evolution going?
Based solely on the number of Labview bugs I've encountered and reported, I'd guess this has never been done, with the user community, or within NI itself.....

Here are some articles that can help provide some insights into LabVIEW programming and the LabVIEW compiler. They are both interesting and recommended reading for all intermediate-to-advanced LabVIEW programmers.
NI LabVIEW Compiler: Under the Hood
    VI Memory Usage
The second article is a little out-of-date, as it doesn't discuss some of the newer technologies available such as the In-Place Element Structure you were referring to. However, many of the general concepts still apply. Some general notes from your post:
    1. I think part of your confusion is that you are trying to use control references and local variables like you would use variables in a C program. This is not a good analogy. Control references are references to user interface controls, and should almost always be used to control the behavior and appearance of those controls, not to store or transmit data like a pointer. LabVIEW is a dataflow language. Data is intended to be stored or transmitted through wires in most cases, not in references. It is admittedly difficult to make this transition for some text-based programmers. Programming efficiently in LabVIEW sometimes requires a different mindset.
    2. The LabVIEW compiler, while by no means perfect, is a complicated, feature-rich set of machinery that includes a large and growing set of optimizations. Many of these are described in the first link I posted. This includes optimizations you'd find in many programming environments, such as dead code elimination, inlining, and constant folding. One optimization in particular is called inplaceness, which is where LabVIEW determines when buffers can be reused. Contrary to your statement, the In-Place Element Structure is not always required for this optimization to take place. There are many circumstances (dating back years before the IPE structure) where LabVIEW can determine inplaceness and reuse buffers. The IPE structure simply helps users enforce inplaceness in some situations where it's not clear enough on the diagram for the LabVIEW compiler to make that determination.
The more you learn about programming in LabVIEW, the more you realize that inplaceness itself is the closest analogy to pointers in C, not control references or data references or other such things. Those features have their place, but core, fundamental LabVIEW programming does not require them.

  • Really stupid question - Migrating from 6i to 11g

    Hi all,
I'm a developer that have been working with oracle since Forms 3, right now I use Forms 6i and I would like to know what I need to use Forms 11g. I understand this new environment is web based, but to start developing and deploying, what I need? for example if I buy the Oracle Forms & Report 11g, I also will need the OAS? or just with Forms and Report I could deploy (somehow) the application?
Please don't flame me, I just want to understand how this works now.
    Best Regards

As my old college profession used to say - "The only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked!" Forms 11g only supports web deployment. This means you will need the OAS with the Forms and Reports Services installed as well. Typically, the setup is three tiered ( 1 server = Database, 1 server = Application Server, 1 server = Infrastructure server ). You don't have to set up the technology stack multitiered - all three could reside on the same server or you could have the all three on the same machine but is not recommended. I would at least have the database on a server seperate from OAS.
Here are a few links to get you started.

  • What a victory: failed installs due to "shared technology" errors returns endless threads via Google

I purchased PSE 10 (download) and lit up an install. It failed. I searched Google and oddly, the moment I hit the terms "photoshop elements 10 install fail" I got 40-50 results for "shared technology" failures. You guys are failure stars!
By the way, I cannot thank you enough for wasting my day like this. Back in the old days one had to visit microsoft.com to waste an entire ******** day trying to get their poorly engineered product installed, after it's failed endlessly to do as expected. Bill would be proud, if he weren't busy out there earning billions of dollars by giving away millions...which is nicer than what I have to say about you right now. Who needs time with their kids? Install PSE!!! It's a great time soak!
So, with that, I beg of you to please start sending me the usual asinine, nonworking fixes-in-a-box to get this product installed on my machine, even though we both know it won't work. Meanwhile, I have purchased downloaded, installed, and started using the Corel's latest version of PSP, which nearly FLEW into my hard drive and immediately worked right out of the box. Boy, they suck, huh? No. They don't. You do.
I've followed the hilariously funny and equally useless advice on your help forums (my favorite: " If you are using a downloaded installer, or running the installation from the hard drive, the Shared Technologies can fail because of the installation path. Copy the installation files to a folder to the root of the drive." Really? So you're saying "to install this stupid product, first you must fix our stupid mistake." Love you. Truly, I do.) and nothing has worked. I assume you will end up pointing at Microsoft and calling them bad, since every other app on my computer works without this moronic, yet remarkably popular, failure.
And even if we get this (endlessly) failed implementation to work - emphasis on IF - I will probably de-install it and demand a refund, depending on whether PSP has their product up to par, which is far more likely than Adobe having a working fix.
Now, I will say for the record that I have been harsh, and snide, and nasty. I am tired, and frustrated, and it's been four hours, and I have had enough. Having said that, deal with it. I am your customer (for the moment). Why do I need to ask you to make your product work? Isn't that the point? Is it? Helloooo?

It has occurred to me that Adobe's support people may be cowards. Then again, I am being a jerk, and it's probable they may have read my comments and said "screw this guy." I might say that. Then again, if I worked for a world-class company like Adobe I might step up and defend my product.
Then again, I might not, because they fell off the tracks some time ago and failed to stay in sync with the technologies they need to work with (read: Microsoft) to the degree they have Google reflecting:
a.) Adobe's level of failure in compatibility given the immediate and numerous responses to the simple keywords "elements fail" returning an astonishing number of responses (mine at the top lately) and...
b.) Adobe's own technical staff offering roughly a dozen differing, non-working fixes to the issue and...
c.) Adobe's studied and intentional avoidance of my emails, this thread, and hilariously worthless chat support.
It is very likely the source of the issue is an administrator profile glitch on the MS side, or perhaps an MSI issue, but good luck getting that clarified from Adobe.
    They!
    Don't!!
    Know!!!
And they don't care. All I can say about that is I am glad I only dropped sixty-odd bucks on this product rather than seven-odd hundred for CS6. Maybe I'd get support if I had, but these snotty threads would be YouTubed, Reddited, and published in the local paper.
Next: there has been a breakthrough! An amazing breakthrough!
Among the many useless and stupid bits of advice Adobe's staff throw around on the support site, there is a great recommendation to try to load the product in safe mode. Last night I booted into safe mode and tried to run the installer, which of course immediately popped a dialog box stating it couldn't run in safe mode, so there's Adobe's great advice for you. While I was laughing and taking screen shots for posterity I glanced at my desktop, and there it was: the Photoshop Elements 10 icon. What are you doing there? I double clicked, and viola! It was loaded all along! Opened right up with that blue screen with a thousand names of the dev team.
Wait. What? I thought it rolled back? It SAID it rolled back the install. No? That 5 minutes it spends “rolling back” it just pretends to roll back, deletes the icon, leaving my computer polluted with a product I already got a refund on from Amazon? Really?
Anyway I rebooted back into my normal state and lo and behold, the PSE 10 icon is still there on my desktop. It did not install from safe mode. It had been installed from the beginning, and for whatever reason booting into safe mode and rebooting back seems to fix whatever idiotic and mindless failure Adobe built into this thing which they couldn't otherwise help me fix. Plain reboots did not do this: only booting into and back out of safe mode.
Thinking I was imagining things, I got up this morning and checked. Yep. There it is on my desktop, working as if it had been there all along and I hadn't been ignored, avoided, led astray, given stupid advice, or sold a product that clearly wasn't ready for sale. PSE 10. Working. Seemingly fully functional. Glory be.
Now, since I am the one who fixed it, I was thinking Adobe should pay me. I spent about 10 hours fuming over this thing, and I bill $65 an hour as a consultant. I realize that I am not an Adobe coder or support specialist, but I fixed it and should be compensated for my time at my rate. A bonus is in order as well - call it pain and suffering. 10X$65 plus a little sweetener, let's call it a thousand bucks. What do you say, Adobe? Are you going to award my ingeniousness and brilliance? You couldn't handle it, and still can't, but I did it. Me. The bitchy, whiny one infesting your support board with angry hate. You owe me.
Yeah, I didn’t think so. Anyway, I have always liked PSE and have used past versions to great success. I think I will like PSE10 just as much, regardless the fact my view of Adobe is that much dimmer for the shamefully bad experience of late. This has been a pretty sucky couple of days, and from the boards and complaints I have found out it's the exception rather than the rule, but exceptional nonetheless.
Now I shall screenshot this thread and publish it everywhere I can find a place for it. I will call out the responses I received from Adobe (none) and the great support I received from Adobe (none) and the quality service I received from Adobe (none). Then I will do my level best to remember what the heck I was doing that made me want to buy PSE in the first place: there was a photo of...something, and I wanted to...do something. What was it? I've spent so much time in Adobe FailShop I have forgotten what I was doing here in this bottomless abyss of fail...
Ta taa, Adobe Support. Love you, really I do. True story.

  • Choosing technologies to start up a web project

    Hi everybody!
I have to develop a project which uses EJB (as business logic tier, using both stateful and stateless bean), J2EE (as web tier) and Hibernate (as persistency tier, using a db for data storage). Though I know these technologies under a theoretical point of view, I'm not updated with the state-of-art of IDE and developing tools (academic environments are not very helpful under these point of view).
So, I need suggestions about the server/IDE/DBType (Eclipse/NetBeans, JBoss/appServer, MySql/HSQLDB...) solution that I should choose. What do you suggest? For me is important to have good support forum and updated documentation, so that I can solve issues relatively fast. At the same time it'd be great to have the possibility to create all the configuration files, folders, creation command, deployment command from one unique IDE. Of course all the technologies involved should be Open Source.
Thank you for your attention. I hope you don't find my questions too stupid and you will spend time to give me some suggestions. I think it's a very important starting point.

  • Java/J2EE Config - Stupid Question # 2398375

(On XP Home PC) - Just installed J2SE Version 1.4.2 into C:\j2sdk1.4.2_06, followed by J2EE Version: 1.3.1 FCS into C:\j2sdkee1.3.1 & I have an anoying configuration problem .
I opened a DOS window & went into my projects folder. Command "java -version" works - gives version & full spiel. But "javac AdviceBean.Java" (which is in a sub-folder), gives a "'javac' is not recognised....." message.
I have variable set as -
    CLASSPATH = $J2EE_HOME/lib/j2ee.jar;C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Cawdell\Projects
    Path=%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Sonic\MyDVD;;C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_06;C:\j2sdkee1.3.1;
    JAVA_HOME=C:\j2sdk1.4.2_06\bin
    J2EE_HOME=C:\j2sdkee1.3.1
I don't care what these SHOULD be set to, so long as everything works. I'm not an active Java developer, I'm refreshing on Java & teaching myself J2EE & especially EJB, so after 3 days messing with this & getting nowhere - does anyone have a clue, what stupid mistake I've made ?
    Here's hoping :-)

Actually, it's not that big a problem at all.
The CLASSPATH environment variable is an easy one - don't use it. If you're compiling and running in a command shell, set CLASSPATH using the -classpath option.
If you're using a J2EE container like Tomcat or WebLogic, those use their own CLASSPATH and ignore any system CLASSPATH entirely. Learn what those containers assume for a CLASSPATH and you'll be better off.
The PATH issue is an OS problem, not a Java problem. You need to tell the OS where to look for executables that you want to run without having to type in the complete path. No getting around that, unless you want to rewrite the OS.
Most tools with an installer program will modify the PATH for you. You just have to be careful to note the changes they make, that's all.
A word of advice: installing Java apps in a directory whose name contains spaces is usually a bad idea.

  • Feeling Stupid

Is anyone else wondering if Apple is offering any kind of trade-in specials for those who have the older version of the iPhone? One feels a little stupid having spent over $400 on a phone only to find out that less than six months later they have a phone that is being promoted as twice as good, twice as fast, for half the price. While I understand that technology advances, this is rather insulting - generally a newer model of an item would be priced higher in conjunction with the additional features. It also makes me seriously question whether my wish to buy a Apple computer is a sensible one; will I pay thousands for a computer now and find that, a few months down the road, you're selling a better model for less?

The new 3g phone is obviously being subsidized by AT&T (like most other cell phones). The plans are more expensive for the 3g. If you do the math, the first two years' cost of the new phone more expensive than the old one (at $400 + lower plan cost). You can argue that you're getting more with 3g ... but the fact is that it's still more expensive.
As for the technology ... welcome to cell phones. There will always be a new model that is faster, better ... and less expensive than the last one. It's like PCs back in the late 80s early 90s. The fact that the new one IS more expensive is actually odd if you look at palm/razr/etc by comparison.

  • Intel Rapid Storage Technology and the Envy 700-330qe

I have a new Envy 700-330qe CTO. One of the suggested driver updates on the hp support is for Intel Rapid Storage Technology. I initially thought that this was a driver for hardware like my old Pavilion had (it had an Intel Matrix Storage Manager board which managed RAID 0, 1, or 0+1).  Now I see that it is a RAID software emulation program. Nowhere in the documention that came with the machine is there any mention of this machine's capability to run any form of RAID. I do have two HDD's and they are the same size, so theoretically I could run RAID 0 or 1 if I so choose, but nowhere is there any mention of a way to do this. I did see that the BIOS must be set to run RAID.
I am NO expert. I was wondering where I can find further into on how to set up a machine with RAID. Thus far, I have not even taken a peek at the BIOS (not even sure how to do this, so some of you may think I am stupid). I guess I get a  bit bent out of shape when a product has features that should be out in the open but appear to be hidden. Any help would be reallyhl appreciated.

    Hi,
I am sure that you noticed that the HP configurator doesn't offer an option to cache a RAID configuration.  The Intel IRST MSATA caching functionality does rely on the RAID setup process to activate caching on one HD.

Novice here,,, Why can't we export to DVD ? Policy or Technology or ? thx

Why can't we export to DVD ?
Am afraid I don't quite understand your question since we can export and create/author DVDs. If you are asking why iMovie does not do so directly, then yes there is a problem of technology involved. QT is basically a "temporal" synchronization multimedia "engine" while DVDs are based on "spatial" compression and synchronization. Therefore, a different "engine" is required for processing the data -- Compressor alone for advanced compression and DVDSP for advanced authoring or a combined simple compression and authoring application like iDVD. If you are asking if it is possible to combine the capabilities of iMovie and iDVD into a single application, then I suppose it would be possible but probably violate the standing policy of Apple's normal "KISS" (Keep it Simple, Stupid) approach of doing things and likely create a whole new level of problems to add to the current ones already present.

  • [SOLVED] Asus "Palm-proof" Technology?

So I'm scoping out some laptops, and I've narrowed it down to a Toshiba Satellite and an Asus A53.  The Satellite seems to have slightly better hardware, but I'm fascinated by this Asus claim of "palm proof technology" on the touchpad, since that's been a major frustration point with my current laptop.
Is this a software thing, or a hardware thing?  I know it's a stupid question to ask, since it wouldn't make much sense at the software level, but if I want to run Linux on this computer, I'd rather not get it expecting some feature to work that only works due to some Windows bloatware.  Anyone who's used a laptop with this kind of "palm proof" feature got any remarks?

I have no idea what I did. Things were going fine and now I cannot get the email to work on my blackberry torch. I even went to the AT& T store for them to help.  An email was sent that instructed me on how to change my password.  It said that my user name was my email address but when I put that in as a user name, I keep getting a message saying that is incorrect as it is an internet name.  I really wish there were a LIVE person that could help me.

Hello and welcome to the forums!
I am a real live person (well my wife does have doubts.)  Let's see what we can do.
Is this an AT&T email address? Can you login via PC to the AT&T website where you get your email and is it valid? ? Did you delete the aborted setup on the Blackberry device? Unlike hand grenades and nuclear weapons you get another chance at this.
