Sudo problem

Heya!  I'm having some problems since my sudo was upgraded.
When I try to run nmap (which I have added to my sudoers file), it says:
sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0644, should be 0440.
Broken Pipe.
What's going on here???
-GPS

You have to run visudo and re-add yourself to the db.  The problem is that your /etc/sudoers file was renamed to /etc/sudoers.pacsave.
I've already submitted a bug report on this one.  Next time /etc/sudoers should be in NoUpgrade (you could also add it yourself).

  • Severe sudo problems

I did a pacman -Syu yesterday after not updating for about a month.  The 2.6.31 kernel didn't recognize my wireless card (uses rt2780--similar problem to http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82589) so I rolled back to 2.6.30, leaving everything else the same.  Now the wireless works but running sudo causes the terminal to freeze--no Ctrl-C or any other input is accepted.  This happens in both the login tty and urxvt.  There is also some strange behavior with Firefox (starts but freezes as soon as I click anything) and some occasional problems starting X (hangs on xauth).  A lot of other things work normally (xmonad seems to be working ok) so I can't put my finger on the problem.  Any suggestions as to which particular packages I could roll back?  Or, alternatively, regarding the wireless issue, so I could upgrade to the new kernel again?
I am running xmonad but still have GNOME installed.  Architecture is x86_64.

your symptoms sound alot like these issues: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 84#p574584
which was a bug in rt2870 ( http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13638 ) that should have been fixed in kernel 2.6.31.
2.6.31 does work for me with rt2870.

  • Sudo problem after upgrading

Today I have upgraded Arch. After reboot I noticed that all commands through sudo run without any password. Why?
    /etc/sudoers
    root ALL=(ALL) SETENV: ALL
    %wheel ALL=(ALL) SETENV: ALL
P.S. For now I excluded myself from wheel group.

Wow, sounds like a pretty serious problem.
Are those the only uncommented lines in the sudoers file?

  • [SOLVED] sudo problem??

There's an issue with my sudo command. I have installed the package set up my sudoers file properly. Everytime I call sudo it gives me the password prompt but when I type my account's password it says it's INCORRECT. I have no issues logging in or anywhere else.
So far I have been able to circumvent this issue by using the NOPASSWD: tag in the sudoers file, but I'd really like to pin down the issue.
    Thanks in advance.
Edit: Reinstalling pambase does the trick.

  • Weirdness; No bash, no sudo, no locks to click, but lotsa smbd

I'm having a problem which is rendering my machine pretty unusable. After I first login in, everything is hunky dory. But after a few minutes programs just start getting unresponsive left right and centre. Symptoms also include that my terminal shell goes wonky. Starting a terminal window just shows the last login message and the blinking cursor, but no prompt. Typing commands in doesn't do anything.
If I run bash I get a prompt, but I can't use sudo.
If I need to authenticate anything, the lock from the "click on the lock to make changes" doesn't appear. I'm guessing this is related to my sudo problem.
Alo when I check the processes with top I find that there are something like 50 instances of the smbd daemon running. I added deadtime = 5 to the /etc/smbd.conf file, and it has culled the numbers somewhat. But I think this is a symptom, not the cause - those daemons aren't consuming any cpu or memory resources to speak of.
I think it might have something to do with recently installing Adobe CS4. It seemed to have started at the same time. Mind you I did have to throw away a lot of stuff to make room for it. Could I have inadvertantly thrown away some essential bit of system kit?

    Hi st!b,
Where did you throw stuff away from?
Have you done any Disk/OS maintenace lately?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    Reboot, test again.

    Hello.
For couple of weeks I am occasionally seeing a strange problem.
When I use Yaourt I get some issues that I suspect might be caused by some bash configuration problem.
    Here is the output:

    aaaa

After upgrade to the latest Yaourt version (0.9.5.2-1) this is gone and Yaourt only promps like this:
    $ yaourt -S yaourt

    But there is second problem:
/usr/bin/yaourt: eval: line 24: syntax error near unexpected token `required'
    /usr/bin/yaourt: eval: line 24: `echo (required by $requiredbypkg)'
Which is still persistent and was not solved by version upgrade. I have feeling in the gut, that it might have the same culprit.
I also have second Archlinux box (notebook) with installation that is very similar to this one. I have cloned it, but removed some packages. Most of the system is the same. This problem is not present there and Yaourt works fine.
I know that Yaourt is not officially supported and there are other frontends, but I prefer Yaourt.
Does anyone have idea what might be the problem?
    Thanks.

With regard to the sudo problem:  sudo recently underwent an upgrade that featured a rewriting of its plugins, including /etc/sudoers; I noticed the same issues for a couple days.  Add your user to the "wheel" group again, and it should clear things up.

  • Sudo: user: command not found

    Hi there,
I'm struggling with this sudo problem.
All i've been doing with terminal was logging into another account on my iMac and running an application, so i write sudo disk (disk is username for the other account)
then i enter password and path to the application
i've been doing this for past 3-4 month every day, bet since yesterday after entering pasword i get this error - sudo: user: command not found
Any help here would be appreciated!
    Thank you

Are these pretty bad errors? Are these causing sudo not to work?

  • Wonder if they will give the $29 back...

Was it really necessary to break everything in sight just to "improve" Leopard?
Maybe some of you guys have found solution(s) to these issues:
    1. sudo command when used in scripts or multiple commands is broken.
    2. contextual menu items broken
    3. Disk utility breaks the journal file when run on another volume with 10.5 installed
    4. Brother (printer) control center won't work and newly supplied brother printer drivers
    cause occasional kernel panics.
I've been fighting with Snowie all weekend. I finally had to place it on its own partition,
I am going to have to slowly debug it, too many broken software programs to be able to
use it on a daily basis until I can fix them (at least the ones I depend on daily).
    Kj ♘

    Hi Kappy:
I have a brother MFC-9440 CN printer. The drivers supplied with Snowie are working, but occasionally
will cause a kernel panic when I print.
The control center will work (Snowie doesn't like it and will remove it from the printers/utilities
folder upon install), but will no longer start automatically and if started manually (with the new
    Snowie drivers) it will crash.
I tried a an upgrade and a fresh install with migration assistant. The fresh install had all sorts of
problems, programs that were working, quit working or were unstable.
The best install (for me to date) was simply booting from the Install DVD and installing over a good
healthy 10.5.6 Installation that I knew had no known problems.
Disk utility said it fixed something in the partition on two of my volumes, turned out it hosed
the journal file on the Snowie boot volume and on a 10.5 volume. It made the journal file
visible and set the permissions to no access for everyone. Carbon Copy Cloner would hang up
on the .journal file and would not clone, also Disk Warrior would give a volume information
error every time. Deleting the .journal file (using chmod and rm) and reactivating it in DU
(using 10.5) fixed the problem. I just won't use 10.6 DU any more (for the time being).
Snowie also quit booting and I had to re "bless" it. It showed up in the boot manager as
a bootable EFI partition (and would not boot) until It was "blessed". Afterward it showed up
    normally under its own name.
That's just for starters, the rest are programs that need updating. I've done most of them
already (snapz pro X, Speed Download, CCC, 1Password (using Beta), Had to recompile rsync,
testdisk, and the list goes on...
Oh, I listed the "sudo" problem in the UNIX forum and contacted the makers of the CLIX
software (rixstep) as their program is affected by the "sudo" problem too.
    I am wore out already.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that isn't fully working. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Devtools update causes problems with sudo when used in a script?

I'm a little confused by this one, but I'm not convinced that it's a bug.. yet.
Long story short, I compile packages using the ABS via a script/wrapper which uses devtools. The script is available here: https://github.com/WorMzy/compilepackage
Now, this script is far from perfect, but has worked perfectly well (in various states of completeness) for the past year or so. However, with the recent update of devtools (20120720-1 => 20121013-1), my script fails to execute correctly. After entering the password when prompted (by sudo, at this line: https://github.com/WorMzy/compilepackag … tions#L107), the script terminates unexpectedly.
Downgrading devtools "fixes" this problem, but I'm not sure if this is a bug in devtools, sudo, zsh, my script, or something else.

    Thanks.

Update: It appears that the cause is systemd's nspawn. Disabling it in mkarchroot (have_nspawn=0) resolves the problem.
However, I don't understand why it's causing this behaviour. User input works fine for the sudo password prompt, but then fails for the pacman user prompt? Do they use different input buffers or something? Does that question even make sense?
Anyway, I'll open a bug report on flyspray and upstream about this when I get the chance.

  • Problem with sudo - sudoers is mode 0604, should be 0440

    ryans-imac-2:~ Ryan$ sudo chmod -RN /.vol
sudo: /private/etc/sudoers is mode 0604, should be 0440
ryans-imac-2:~ Ryan$ postdrop: warning: unable to look up public/pickup: No such file or directory
    Please advise.

    There is a '-N' option for chmod -- it's for removing ACL's.
The best way to learn is not to make random changes that you don't understand, and then ask for help in public forums when something goes wrong. Set yourself a constructive problem to solve; for instance, by writing a shell script. Read man pages. Read UNIX books.
You say you want to grant permissions to the current user. Which permissions -- read, write, execute, all? Do you mean ownership? ACL's? Recursive? Sticky or SUID bits? What permissions should other users have? First learn how to ask the right question, then you'll most likely be able to answer it yourself. Start with the chmod(1) man page. When you understand everything on that page, you'll know quite a lot.
Meanwhile you might be able to repair the damage you'be already done by running the "Repair permissions" routine from Disk Utility. This would be one of the few situations where it's actually useful.

  • Problems registering an existing Directory Server. Only given sudo access

    Hellos.
I can install and start/stop my 11g Directory from command line with /opt/sfw/bin/sudo dsadm or dsconf commands.
The directory uses port 389 so I need to have it running as "root" I ran the dsadm command with sudo.
My problem is that when I use the https://localhost:8181/dscc7 web page to register the Directory I eventually get prompted for a Solaris account/password.
I don't know (and I hope I never do know) the password to root.
    How do I proceed?
The dialog did say that I can have a Solaris account which can administer this Directory instance but how is it done when I use port 389 ???
    HELP!!!

If you're running on Solaris 10, then the most obvious things is to add the relative permission to the user that will run the Directory Server, for example:
    # usermod -K defaultpriv=basic,net_privaddr <USER>
    HTH,

  • Problem with sudo

Hi. I'm setting up my ArchLinux 8.1.07 distro and I'm running into issues with sudo. I installed sudo through pacman, and now after I added myself to the /etc/sudoers file, it doesn't request a password for me. I do not have the NOPASSWRD option enabled.
    excerpt from my sudoers file:
    dburban ALL=(ALL) ALL
On all of my previous linux setups, I was asked for the password everytime I logged in and out, or restarted. Arch doesn't ask even if i reboot. The only way I got it to ask for the password was to delete my user and set it up again. But it didn't solve the problem, it just asked for the password once, and now doesn't ask for it anymore.
    Specs: Thinkpad T61

    Thanks in advance

I guess it is on a timeout system. I guess I never knew that because I never had to use it much, and then restart.

  • [SOLVED] Annoying problem with sudo

I tried googling this, but finding the correct search has eluded me.
Suddenly, sudo requires me to enter my password correctly three times (i.e. If I type correctly, I'm asked three times, if I get it wrong on the first go, it's four times and so on). This has only started in the past week.
Any ideas how to fix it?
    TIA

In fact, sudoers was the problem. I have no idea how (since I haven't touched it lately) but the timeout had got itself set to 363636363636363636363636363636363636363636363636363636363, which I'm guessing resolved to an immediate timeout.
Reset and all is good again
    Thanks all

  • [solved] sudo and yaourt problems after recent updates

After recent updates (past week) yaourt started giving me problems. When using yaourt it prompts me for sudo password but it does not seem to use my sudo configuration.
    I get this:
    [sudo] password for root:
    [sudo] password for root:
    Password:
    su: Authentication failure
    Password:
When entering mine or root's password I just get prompt again. The last password is for su, which when I enter root's works.
It seems sudo is not using /etc/sudoers configuration either, as I have things like insults enabled and it used to work previously.
    Any reason for this?
    sudo works fine otherwise.
