Suggestion: Please make a Visual Studio Solution Explorer that is similar to Windows 8 Start Screen

We have monitors now that are enormous and it is now the norm to develop on three or more monitors.  Yet we still try to crowd project navigation info that pleads to be fully visualized into a tiny window as if expanding it is somehow a waste of space.
I mention Windows 8 start screen in the title of this post.  I have no particular love for the start screen except that it is a different spin on a strict hierarchical display of information.  I like that it has the objective of using all available
screen space to present information that would otherwise be shown in a tiny corner of the screen.  So my suggestion in its most general form is for you guys to find a way to use the entire screen to allow a developer to quickly and easily navigate a large
VS project.
For example, even if I fully expand the Solution Explorer to take up the space of an entire monitor the top level nodes of my project take up a tiny fraction of the available screen space - I have to drill down up to 12 levels to reach my files.  And when
I get to the point where I think I see the file I want, the higher level folders have scrolled off the screen so I loose my place in the project.
A couple of suggestions for a new Solution Explorer:
Edit: Make the Solution Explorer more like the Windows 8 Start screen or a file directory browser in the sense that Start Screen is a full-screen navigation screen versus a control that is primarily desigend to be docked.  If I maximize Solution Explorer
on my monitor the MOST screen space it will use is about 20% down the left edge of my screen.  Even with 80% of my screen left EMPTY, I am clicking and clicking and scrolling and clicking and scrolling in order to navigate to where I need to be. /Edit
Show an always-visible breadcrumb across the top of the window so the user can navigate up quickly and also maintain a sense of location within the project.
Show folders and files horizontally and vertically.  USE THE ENTIRE WINDOW! Allow different views just as we see in Windows file explorer.
Allow (large) user defined icons to be associated with projects, folders and files.  Instead of showing the same icon for every project in a solution, default to a unique icon.  Thats why we use icons, right?
Allow projects and folders to have foreground/background color properties.
"Scope to this" on the context menu is great... please add the root name on the tab.
It would also be very helpful to display the full directory and solution name on the VS title bar to avoid confusion when working with different versions of the same project.  There are a couple add-ons that do this... why has it become necessary for add-ons.

Hi SWheaties,
Thanks for posting in the MSDN forum.
You could submit this feature request: http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio. The Visual Studio product
team is listening to user voice there. You can send your idea there and people can vote. If you submit this suggestion, I hope you could post that link here, so other community members who are interested in this issue will help you vote it. If
it gets more votes, the product team expert would think about adding it as a new feature in the future product. Thanks for your understanding.

  • How to change feature id in an existing Visual Studio solution

I have created a Visual Studio solution containing all the required design elements (like master pages and user controls) that I would be re-using in all my new applications. I created a visual studio template using (File -> Export Template) and I am
able to create new solution based on it.
I have changed the assembly name, solution id with new Guid. The problem is with Feature Id. I noticed that even when I changed the feature id and id (in feature.xml) with new Guid it still overwrites the existing feature already deployed on the farm instead
    of creating a new feature.
Please advise whether it's possible to re-use a visual studio template with existing features.

    Hi,
Try to create the new blank SharePoint project and include these features or create new feature and update the feature.xml file with old feature.xml content except the scope and feature Id in the new feature file.
So you'll get new assembly to be deployed on GAC.
You cannot change the the SharePoint's default feature id and their's scope.
May be the assembly binding or redirection is not working as expected in the old assembly name.

  • Showing tables from the right schema in Visual Studio Server Explorer

    Hi,
I have a 10g Oracle database with quite a few schemas. My user id has access to all these schemas. Once I am connected to the database using the connection string stored in Web.Config, I am able to do CRUD operations on any table in the database through code. What I want to do is, in the Server Explorer of Visual Studio 2008, create a connection to the database so that I can see all the objects in the Explorer. Though the connection is successful, the problem is the tables and other objects shown in the explorer is not from the schema I want. How would I display the objects from the right schema in the database in Visual Studio Server Explorer? In other words, how would I tell the Server Explorer to display objects from a specific schema? Any help is hightly appreciated. Thanks.
    Babu.

    Hi,
About Visual Studio Server Explorer – Azure resources, we can get detail information from this blog, the blog link is:
    http://blog.ict.eu/2013/09/visual-studio-server-explorer-azure-resources/
    Cloud Services
First all Cloud Services are listed. For each Cloud Service the Production and Staging deployment slots are listed as well as the instances within a deployment.
But we didn’t find all cloud services from VS Server Explorer, I reproduce the same issue (the health cloud service didn't list in the VS Server Explorer), we can try to submit this via

    Hi Anonymous_99,
    Thanks for your post.
Your current solution stored in TFS Source Control? If yes, what’s the version of
    your TFS and VS?
You opened your solution in Solution Explorer, but you cannot open the .cs file from Solution Explorer? If yes, which message you received? Or you had opened your .cs file, but without any text display?
If this issue only happened in this current one solution or your VS cannot open any .cs file on your client?
Please share the screenshot(s) here, it will help us provide the better response.

  • Suggestion: Please make the Combine Files dialog modal to the Acrobat application instance.

I often combine files into a PDF with Acrobat (XI). It is annoying that the main Acrobat window is shown while the Combine Files dialog window is open. I often review other PDF files during the process of selection for later combination. It happens far too often, that I accidentally close the Combine Files instance main Acrobat window during the process and subsequently lose the already specified file selection. I would suggest to make the Combine Files dialog modal for the Acrobat instance so that users would have to close the Combine Files dialog first, before closing the instance. I would appreciate this in a future update. Thanks a lot.

  • Unable to connect Oracle 10g Express from Visual Studio Server Explorer

    Hello,
Please help me out here. I am connecting from Visual Studio 2008 to Oracle 10g Express Edition and the I have installed the ODAC 11 and the ODP.NET as well for Visual Studio(Both include Oracle Developer tools). But whenever I tried to connect from my Visual Studio 2008 server explorer so that I can have the database and its object there, I do get this error : "ORA-12560 : TNS: protocol adapter error."
The following is what I specified in my connection box:
    DataSource Name: (Local Database)
    Username : HR
    Password: the password for it.
My OS is : Windows Vista Ultimate.
Please anyone who has solved such error should just help out here.
    Thanks all

Thank you for your reply. I will like to know if you can use Visual Studio. In visual studio there is what we called Server Explorer and from there you can create connection and access all the database server from there. I am able to connect to the Oracle XE through the browser and I was able to crete table and other stuffs like that but when I tried to connect from Visual Studio 2008, I get the 12560 Error. I checked my TNSNAMES and found this:
    XE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = OLAMMIE)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =

Look at what I have in my Sqlnet.Ora file,
    # This file is actually generated by netca. But if customers choose to
    # install "Software Only", this file wont exist and without the native
    # authentication, they will not be able to connect to the database on NT.
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
Please kindly help me out of this as it is very urgent. I can connect from browser using http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex but cannot connect from my C# code and Server Explorer. What is likely to cause this error.
Thank you for helping me in advance.

  • A suggestion--please make Itunes behave better when updating library

Whenever iTunes is running Updating Library, if I switch to another application, every 15-20 seconds iTunes pulls itself back and gives itself top level focus. I KNOW the library is updating. Why do I need to be reminded of this every 15 seconds. Basically, while the library is updating, I can't use my computer for anything else. Please make the "Updating Library" window stay in the background when the user has tabbed away to another application. Thanks!

May want to leave feedback here:

  • Visual Studio Grid Component that is sortable and updatable

    Hello,
We have a need to pull a group of records from SQL Server into a grid component on a web site. Once the data is in the grid we'd like to be able to sort it a couple of different ways. We also need to write that data back to the database (Updates, not inserts).
We can get the grid component to pull the data and sort it but if we try and update the sorted data after making changes, it corrupts the data. The updated data goes into the wrong records (probably in the unsorted order).
If we don't sort, it works fine. If we do sort it's no good. Is there a trick to getting this to work? Do we need to use a different component? I'm not the developer so I'm sorry if I'm a little vague on technical details but I think it ought to be something
    easily achievable.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Matt

    Hello,
    Thank you for your post.
I am afraid that the issue is out of support range of VS General Question forum which mainly discusses
the usage of Visual Studio IDE such as WPF & SL designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System
    and Visual Studio Editor.
Because you got the issue during web site programming, I suggest that you can consult your issue on ASP.NET forum:

     for better solution and support.

  • Problem Installing Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2010 in my laptop ( OS: Windows 8.1 64bit )

hi staff of microsoft or anybody,
I have problem installation of VS pro in my laptop windows 8.1 (64bits) using web installer and offline unzipping iso. BTW i have VS 2013 installed in my computer at the moment. Before i
upgrade from windows 8.0 to 8.1 , i used to have VS PRO 2010 but after installing VS 2013 it was uninstall automatically,
I keep getting this popup of error: DDSet_Error: Internal error: 1009 ( while installing Visual Studio 2010 Professional ) . Could somebody tell me what is the solution because i need VS 2010 for my project.  thanks in advance for anybody who could
provide me the solution , thanks a lot

    Hello SuperWeb,
I have checked you logs and find something which may related to this issue:
    1.  WIN64DUALFOLDERS: Substitution in 'c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\Microsoft.VisualStudio.vspGridControl.dll' folder had been blocked by the 1 mask argument (the folder pair's iSwapAttrib member = 0).
    2. Assembly Install: Failing with hr=80070005 at RemoveDirectoryAndChildren, line 396
The folder substitution is blocked and the RemoveDirectoryAndChildren meet access denied in your setup. May I ask a few questions:
    1. Do you have admin privilege and have you run your setup with admin
    2. Do you have any ant-virus software installed on your OS which may blocked Visual Studio from installing?
I will recommend u refer to this blog:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/solving-setup-errors-by-using-the-subinacl-tool-to-repair-file-and-registry-permissions.aspx
You can then run a script to give all your folders and registries admin permissions. Let's see if you can install your setup after that.
By the way, the checksum can be checked by using this tool from Microsoft:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841290
However since I cannot download ISO from DreamSpark as I'm not a student, I cannot help you verify it. Please contact your vendor to know the exact ISO hash number. A good ISO is required before you start the install process.
    Best regards,
    Barry

    Hi diakoniaus,
For the situation, you can check if you have the need permissions to access the team project in Visual Studio Online.
To make sure the permission of your credential, we can run tfssecurity command in VS command line to have a check. Please execute
tfssecurity /imx “MS account” /collection:url, for more information about tfssecurity /imx, please refer to:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms400806.aspx
If you have the corresponding, you can also have a try on other machines to see if it works for you. Or you can clean team foundation cache, delete cookies in browser and delete the credentials that saved in credential manager. Then reconnect to the team
project via VS 2010. You can check the troubleshooting details in this

I have my biztalk vs solution in Dev and deployed my dlls MSI/Binding files to prod. The biztalk solution is only in dev. Now every time I want to make changes to my biztalk vs solution in dev such as changing data type in fields in schemas from string to
integer, then I have to build my project again. from that point, how do I automatically update my dlls, MSI/binding files in biztalk server prod so that it uses recent code from biztalk vs solution. I really don't want to keep exporting MSI/ binding files
from dev and importing them to prod.
Do I have to configure biztalk deployment framework to do that automatically?

    Hi Chris,
You can consider using BizTalk deployment framework for it.

    You can also use the
    BTSTask
    to automate the deployment/undeployment.
For using in conjunction with TFS, you can do  mix of these two things:
    - msbuild extension pack: http://msbuildextensionpack.codeplex.com/
    - powershell provider for
    biztalk: http://psbiztalk.codeplex.com/

  • Visual Studio Solution/Projects Best Practices

I'm working on a wpf desktop application that has 3 projects included in a single solution including; the main application project, a data model project, and a setup project.
I question whether this is bad practice or not.  Should I separate the projects into 3 different solutions?  Or, does it not matter?  I can't seem to find a consensus around the subject.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi JHMyersII,
    >>I question whether this is bad practice or not.  Should I separate the projects into 3 different solutions?  Or, does it not matter?  I can't seem to find a consensus around the subject.
I think it's up to you:)
For example, generally we could create different projects in the same solution if the multiple executables that are closely related,

But if they are not closely related, it is up to you, create different solutions is ok.
    Best Regards,
    Jack
