Suggestions for automatically restarting a stale internet connection

I'm having to use my box from work at the moment but my setup has a funny habit of losing its internet connectivity.  This is easily resolved by repairing the connection in Windows or restarting the relevant network profile.
The problem is once I am at work the only notification that my interwebs has died is when I can't connect for a remote session and obviously without remote access I can't restart the network profile so I'm stuck for the day.
I've had a quick google and there are a few simple bash script via cron solutions:
http://www.linuxscrew.com/2009/04/02/ti … ilability/
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/redhat … ll-up.html
Slightly more adventurous approach here:
http://www.unix.com/shell-programming-s … ivity.html
I can create the script and the cron myself no probs but first I wondered:
a) has anyone here done this already and wants to share their scripts? (rather than reinvent the wheel)
b) is there a more recognized way of doing this in Arch? (could netcfg support some sort of keep alive)
c) there's a few linux tools out there that do this but most seem distro/de specific or are gui only and require you to be at the machine - anyone implementing one with workarounds for Arch?
d) ping or wget seems an unfriendly way of checking the connection - do people have any alternative ideas?

Most of time everything will be fine. But it's highly recommended to read news on archlinux.org.
If there are some packages broken in Current/Extra/Community, they are ususlly fixed quickly. Usually only some X stuff or drivers glitches or packages not yet rebuilded with newest lib - are the most common issues. But this doesn't happen often, and is not critical (your system will not die because of this ).
Even Testing and Unstable works fine for me most of time.
With rolling release system you get small updates often, which is much better than 500M of updates with next Ubuntu/SuSE/Mandriva/Fedora/etc. release, for example. Because it's very hard to find what package breaks things in such a horde of updated packages.

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
Additionally, your 24 hours don't start until you begin to watch the movie, you have 30 days to start watching the movie.

I get a message "The Itunes server could not be contacted, check your internet connection" when trying to check for Ipod Nano software updates. I have a 1st generation Nano and haven't updated the software for a while. My internet connection is working. Was thre a change in the internet address for NANO software updates? Do I have to reconfigure something in Itunes to point to the correct address?

What version of iTunes are you using?  The latest is 10.6.3. In iTunes, choose Help -> About iTunes to check the version number. If it's lower than 10.6.3, download the latest version from here.

  • How easy is it to plug a windows laptop into the ethernet port of a Time Capsule and for it to get an internet connection?

I use Time Capsule to distrubute wifi thoughout my home.  I have an office laptop (windows) that my company's IT dept won't install a wireless card in (for security reasons????).  Can I get an intenet connection to the laptop if I connect it to an ethernet port on the back of the TC?

Can I get an intenet connection to the laptop if I connect it to an ethernet port on the back of the TC?
If you can get an Internet connection when you test using your iMac's Ethernet port, then you know that the Ethernet port is working on the TC and the Ethernet cable is also working.
You should be able to get a connection on any other computer in the same way.
If you cannot get an Internet connection on the PC with the same hook up, then you will need to do some troubleshooting on the PC....or call the IT guys at the company to find out what type of block they may have on the PC.

  • Looking for a verbose version of Internet Connect

In talking about a connection problem regarding dialup sign-on with my ISP tech support, he asked for the error number. When I said I used a Mac, he asked if someone with a PC could try. Obviously there must be messages transferred during the connection process that I do not see.
Is there a version of Internet Connect that will show me those messages?

It's been a while, but IIRC you can open System Preferences -> Network -> Dial-up modem -> PPP and click the Options button. There are options for verbose logging which will log all the connection data which you can review later.

  • Is the user for the trial version required Internet connection?

I installed trial version of Fireworks at my home with internet connection.  At that time I log in Adobe page and leave my profile.  Then I can open the soft, but I coud't when I try to use Fireworks without internet connection environment.  Am I suppose to always have the Internet connection for trial use?  Is there any difference if I purchased software?

To the best of my knowledge, an internet connection is not required in order to use a trial version of Fireworks—except for perhaps when installing the software or completing an initial account setup. It certainly isn't required for purchased software.

  • IMail 5.2: How do I optimize it for use on a slow internet connection?

    Hi there,
I recently upgraded to Lion OS X v 10.7.3, and i like iMail 5.2 when I work from my office or home.
BUT, when I am working in the field I often have access to only glacially slow internet via an internet modem, and iMail takes FOREVER to download my messages. Way longer than my pre Lion version of iMail.
Is there a way to optimize iMail 5.2 in order to optimize for slow internet connections? For instance, to partially retrieve large messages? Or to somehow deactivate all the synchronizing and other Activity that goes on in the background?
    Many thanks,
    Hoyt

Use a web based email account like GMail or HushMail, because they are a website and people access their emails from many different machines (phones, computers, slow or fast connections) the site can optimize things better than a dumb mail server.
It's possible to auto-forward a copy of your present email accounts to have them on the web based accounts too, don't know exactly how to go about it, but many people elsewhere also have the same desire so it's obvious something like that is being used.

  • I get error message -3259 when trying to download Version 5 update for I  pad, yet the internet connection is still operational. Why is this?

When trying to upload Version 5 update for IPad after the download is complete and the files are being processed I get an error message - 3259 which says the internet connection is timed out but in fact it is still operational. The download is unsuccessful. Why is this?

Try temporarily turning off your firewall and antivirus software until the download has completed.

  • Suggestions for Automatic Commit/Rollback

    Consider the following scenario:
A list page displays all of the records currently stored in a table. A user clicks on a link on the list page that fires the Create event and takes them to another page for entering the details of the new record. The user decides they made a mistake and clicks their browser's Back button to abort the process. There is now a new, unpopulated record on the list page.
What is the best way to handle this situation if the user cannot be concerned with manual Commits or Rollbacks? Committing after the new record details are submitted seems okay, but rolling back every time the list page is loaded renders the First/Previous/Next/Last navigation buttons useless.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

Create Action in ADF JSP bindings is meant to create and insert a new row into collection (and if the dataControl in action is ADFBC, then it also marks the row as temporary/initialized as indicated above).
To achieve the backbutton support, for such cases in ADF apps, we recommend using a cancel operation that is bound to 'delete' Action on the iterator which 'removes' the newly created temporary row from the collection so that it's not visible in the collection at all.
Using browser back button after create action will result in the temporary new row in the collection as noted above.
This was designed as per numerous feedback on OTN for our previous JSP solution for creating new rows where a number of teams complained about duplicate row creation on a create row action. You could still achieve this as suggested above by creating a new and initialized row and then copying it's values on the form and then removing the row and then recreating another new row on submit. Note that that requires extra copying of all display values etc and in ADF we decided to avoid that route.

  • Suggestion for creative's next MP3 Player, connection for USB Flash Driv

I would to see a connection for USB flash dri'ves to be added to the next mp3 player Creative makes. This way we don't have to rely solely on expensi've and limited in memory SD Cards.

I'm a bit confused as well, flash dri'ves are all more expensi've than the SDHC cards I have of the same size, and a whole heck of a lot more bulky and oddly shaped. I can't see myself strolling around with a ZEN with a plastic knob sticking out of the side, but that's just my opinion.
I like SD cards, they are slim, extremely light weight and easy to carry (mobility is pretty much the entire point of a portable player). It makes it really easy to purchase a few SD cards and use them like interchangeable disks. They are also pretty cheap and rapidly getting cheaper.

  • When open Firefox 8, says 'Unable to connect' and no websites work. Internet connection is fine. Please help :(

My Firefox automatically updated to Firefox 8. Since doing so, when I open the browser the screen displays a box saying 'Unable to connect' and says the same for any website. My internet connection is fine. I uninstalled and installed Firefox again, but problem persists. Please help as this is really frustrating me :(

    Did you try this?

  • 10.5.7 Internet connection problems

Installed update to 10.5.7 and now MacBook Pro will not connect to internet. Good signal from wireless network. Connects using USB wireless mobile broadband (shows time connected) but will NOT load internet pages or download email..... "Firefox can't find server at....."
Hold off on update to OS 10.5.7!!!!
How do I fix problem? Use wireless broadband mobile for work and wireless network at home. No connection at all at present with MacBook Pro. Using PowerPC G5 at present.

Update may not cause problems for everyone, but my computer is effected. I assume that it is possible for someone else to have the same problem. Thus the suggestion to wait. Without an internet connection it is going to be difficult to remedy the problem by downloading an update. (won't connect to internet!) Thus the need to find a solution. Okay.... something has gone wrong with my system after installing OS update and I need internet to work reliably.

  • Help Menu Quits when using Internet Connect

When a new user account (with admin. priveleges) is opened, the help menu functions perfectly. After connecting to the Internet (modem) the help menu will not function. (can't get any response on any underlines or ? window). I've tried the file deletions suggested in theXlab document, checked the internet connection using "ping' report with no luck. No 3rd party add-ons. I can use any program and return to help and it is operable, until I connect to the internet.
To again get to help, I must create a new user account. This restores the help for tryouts until invoking internet connect. Using OSX 10.4.5. Any suggestions. Apple phone support is referring this to some tech support person.
Am I alone with this problem???

    Hi John,

  • Help with internet connection please????

I am currently running 2 iMacs on Mountain Lion, one iMac Mavericks, iPad Air, 2 iPad minis, iPad 2 , 4 iPhones, Apple TV and an Xbox One in my home. I also have a time capsule and an airport Express and an Ethernet switch.
We recently had an internet switch to LTE from WBBI. Our internet worked great on the WBBI but since switching to LTE, it has been a nightmare for ALL devices. The internet connection is continually disconnecting. I have tried using the Time Capsule as a bridge, taking the Time Capsule and Airport Express out of the equation all together, rebooting, rerouting, you name it and no success.
My internet service provider put a trace on my line and found it was working normally. No one else in my area seems to have any problems but they are running pcs.  This is the only internet available where I live. When using our personal hotspots, everything works like a dream but since we are running a business, a 10Gb data cap per month just won't cut it should we choose to go strictly to hotspots for internet. Lol!
The current router is a Huawei For LTE. Devices wired in and on the wifi network are affected the same. The Internet technicians switched out some equipment concerned that there may be a hardware problem and their PC laptop worked perfectly. I am beginning to believe it an apple issue. I have been fighting this for 2 months and cannot find a solution.
    Help?

Does the Xbox work?  It is not Apple equipment.  That is to say, remove ALL other equipment from the "Huawei For LTE" and JUST attach the Xbox.  Does that work flawlessly?  If it also fails, it is not Apple equipment, and you need to hound your ISP to get this fixed.  Have them prove it work using equipment they bring, and then when they say, yea, it work, have them try your Macs.
If the Xbox works, then disconnect everything (including your switch).  Now using an Ethernet cable connect 1 Mac.  Can you get that to work?  If no, try the other Mac.  If not to both Macs, then your ISP is rather hostile to Mac   Actually, check your System Preferences -> Network Settings.  Assuming you have the original "Automatic" settings, that should be as standard as it comes.  You might try adding System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP/IP -> DHCP Client ID -> aSimpleUniqueName (long shot to see if it makes the LTE provided router happy).
