Suggestions for making a sound room

Hello,
I have been an Audition user for 4 years and love this software! I mainly restore old recordings but I am looking at doing some more live recordings.
My ministry has recently been donated some money with which I what to build a sound room. it is in the middle of an appartment building. The sound room dementions are 16'L 11'W and 8'H. I can play a little with these dementions since the length wall is not yet up. Two of the walls are already existing the other two will be built. I don't need the room to be completely sound proof has the building is fairly quiet most of the time. I would just like to reduce sound into and out of the room not completely but enough to minimize unwanted noise. I have been reading a lot on sound rooms, sound proofing, reverberavtion, etc.
My main question is: I heard that a sound room should be at least 1500 cubic feet, since the walls are not yet up I was woundering if I should sacrifice the most room that I can and build a longer sound room as near to 1500 cubic feet as possible or if it really would not make that much difference.
I have attached a photo for your refference.
Any other suggestions you might have would be welcome.
Thank you!

As an acoustician, I have to tell you that if the rest of the wall construction is like that partially built stud wall, you will have significant sound transmission through all of it - in both directions. You don't want to believe everything you read about how big a room should or shouldn't be - a satisfactory size depends largely on what you want to do with it, and the vast majority of rooms are compromised in this way anyway - but people still get acceptable results in them.
You do, though, appear to have fallen into the classic trap - you've started building a room primarily for acoustic purposes without consulting an acoustician at the outset - in other words, before a single stroke of work is done. Whenever anybody does that, the end result invariably costs them more, because of the amount of work that has to be torn down and redone properly. In your case I'd immediately stop right where I was with that stud wall, because the basic structure of it is just plain wrong in transmission terms.
You have two distinct problems that you need to address with this space - the first is the transmission of sound in and out (what is incorrectly referred to as 'soundproofing'), and the second is the internal treatment of the room in terms of its internal sound dispersion. These two things are only indirectly related, but without a lot more information about the second one, you can't even sensibly work on the first, because you won't have defined what is actually acceptable in terms of sound transmission in and out - it may well not be what you think.
My advice would be to engage a local acousician and get the treatment sorted properly. A lot of people claim that they haven't got the money for this, although in the long run it often saves them money - certainly in rebuild costs. The other thing you should do if you insist on organising this yourself, certainly in terms of sound transmission, is to have a good look at the UK building regs Approved Document E about this in relation to dwellings - it contains a lot of practical advice about actual construction methods to minimise it. Fortunately for you, it's a free download - here is a direct link to it. I'm not aware of another document quite like it anywhere...
Once you've got the structural parts right, the internal treatment is relatively straightforward for most of the things that people do in rooms like this. It invariably involves bass trapping in the corners, and treatment for monitor reflective paths at a bare minimum, and getting the overall reverb time to be acceptable for the applications you have in mind - whatever they are; you haven't said.

Depending on the file formats, you may not have to do any conversion.

  • Book Suggestion for Making the Most of Soundtrack Pro

I have worked with Soundtrack Pro quite a bit but never seem to be able to get the results that I want. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a book or books that would help me make the most of this program? I have problems with removing background noise sometimes I mess around and can get decent results but I feel there are common techniques I could use that I just don't know about. Are there any books that would just give me an overview of ways to make audio sound better? Then I can apply it to SP. I know this is not a tech SP question but I figured someone might have a suggestion

I want to preface this remark by saying that I'm a college prof. who teaches this stuff. I DEMAND that my students join LYNDA.COM for their excellent tutorials on seemingly anything and everything. The SOUNDTRACK PRO series is taught by Larry Jordan, an excellent teacher, and a "Sound" enthusiast. The tariff is only 25 bucks a month, and in two months, you'll be on your way. The best texts go for around 80 bucks, so cancel in two months and you're golden. I also recommend bookmarking parts of the Apple User Manual that are "off the main usage stream." example: Noise Reduction, Page 225, is a common destination for my students.

  • Any suggestion for a new sound card?

    Hello!
My old PC has left me alone, and I'm going to build a new one from scratch this month. I'll be running Win7, I doubt I'll be going for Win8.
As for the sound card, I'd need some advice on what to buy: I have always had SoundBlaster cards and have loved them all, so I think I'll go for a new SoundBlaster (not even taking into account the built-in sound card on the motherboard...), but I can't discern which one would fit me best. I mostly use MIDI and soundfonts for recording study bases for my choir to rehearse and for composing orchestral music: I usually need complex MIDI files with many voices and instruments to perform well.
My old sound card was an Audigy with (just?) 48 MIDI channels (45 free + 3 drum channels), I'd like to have some recent card with good Win7 drivers, but still with many MIDI channels and soundfont support.
The one thing I'm sure I won't be changing at this moment is my 5.1 analogic speaker system, so I need a card with 5.1/7.1 analogic connectors.
Any advice (or wise info on what not to buy) will be much appreciated, thank you all!!!

Thank you for your advice. Have you tested any soundfont bank manager? Regarding this same soundcard, the Creative helpdesk told me it does not come in bundle... I was suggested to try with this one: http://ccfiles.creative.com/manualdn/Applications/AVP/11113/0xCA3D54C2/SFBM_PCAPP_LB_3_21_02.exe (Creative Soundfont Bank Manager 3.21.02), but they also told me (copied from their email)
This Creative SoundFont Bank Manager 3.21.02 is not bundled to the SoundBlaster Audigy Rx. You can try and test this but we do not officially claim that it will work.
Please note that the Creative SoundFont Bank Manager 3.21.02 is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit or 32-bit, Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit or 32-bit with Service Pack 1, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) 2005 or Windows XP MCE 2004.
For SoundBlaster Audigy Rx, it has synth a and synth b meaning 128/128 voices.
    No mention about Win8 compatibility...

  • Tips for making strings sound more real

Basically i'm having trouble getting my strings from the exsp24 to sound real. mainly the violins. does anyone have any good tips?

It very much depends on what sort of music you are writing and what you want the strings to achieve.
As well as having decent sounding samples, you must make sure that what you are writing are typical string parts. You can have the most wonderful string samples in the world, but if you play "Chopsticks" with two fingers they'l still sound like some chimp playing "Chopsticks" with two fingers.
Broadly speaking, chords should be structured with wider spacing between the bottom notes than the top. Although complex classical music can have chords made up of 8 or more notes, pop music tends to have much simpler writing with perhaps only 4 parts or fewer.
Dynamics are also very important. Listen to any piece of classical string music and you'll notice there is a very wide dynamic range within phrases, and even within the length of a single note.
In general, the sort of sound that comes with Logic are good for long legato lines, or sustained block chords, or perhaps short stabbing sounds (think "Psycho). Because the violin is a fretless, fluid instrument, parts that require more sophisticated articulations will require a more up-scale library that features these articulations, and even then the results are not always great.

  • IPad is not making any sounds except for itunes, Pandora and Netflix. Need help.

From one day to another the iPad is not making any sounds (lock, keyboard, games) except for music on iTunes, Pandora and video on Netflix. All sounds are activated on the iPad's general settings. I have synced it and updated the OS to no avail. Any help or suggestions is gratly appreciated.

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Suggest me a usb sound card for mac mini

please suggest me a usb sound card for mac mini (i need 5.1 sound)

The Griffin Technology FireWave will give you the 3 'cables' ("FireWave outputs six channel audio through three 1/8” (3.5mm) stereo mini-jacks: Left/Right, Center/Subwoofer and Right Surround/Left Surround.") connection for surround sound (speakers) audio. Whether or not a particular headphone set is compatible, you might ask Griffin directly about that. If you're playing a DVD with VLC or the Apple DVD Player, you will get surround sound. But, you'd have to find an MP3 with multi-channel audio inside it to play surround sound out of iTunes.

However I still have no backlight keys control.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to get waves maxx audio, dolby sound room for other toshiba laptops?

Hi, I have a A205-S5803 toshiba notebook that previously had vista , then xp, now windows 7 32 professional. I had a problem with xp where the sound volume was quite low even though turned up all the way. However, when I installed windows 7 professional and i think the realtek hd audio driver from toshiba the sound quality/volume greatly, greatly improved. I barely have the volume up below 50% and it is really loud. I even have some cool features-waves maxx audio and dolby sound room which greatly improve volume and sound quality.
I also have a nb305-410bn notebook which is running same windows 7 professional 32 bit but the sound quality is so low and the volume is low too even though settings are to the max. I installed the realtek official drivers which didn't help either. So I thought i would install the drivers from my other notebook since they helped improve the quality of that one. The sound did go up but I didn't get those features the wave and dolby. So I'm wondering has anybody any knowledge of how to enable install those features?

What to say dude. Seems to be something wrong with any system files or registry entries
Why you change something if you have no problems?!
Take my advice and never change a running system ;)
So now to your problem and some hints how to solve this stupid issue!
I would recommend restoring the OS to the early time point. Use the Microsoft tool called system restore.
Possibly you know this tool from the early MS XP OS.
You should find it somewhere in the Accessories.
If this procedure does not help you could use the Toshiba recovery CD and could install the whole OS again!!!
But before you will perform the installation from the recovery CD dont forget to backup your important data!!! ;)
    Bye

  • Making Suggestions for iPad

Does anyone know where one goes to make suggestions for improvements with the iPad? For example I have Pages with some of my templates but I am unable to print from the iPad after I write a document. Since it is wireless I should be able to print from my home network but there is no print feature. I can print from some documents using a third party app but I need to convert the Pages document to a pdf file, email it to my self and then go through a couple of other hurdles before I can print. That should be a pretty easy fix.

How many times does this have to be answered? You can print very easily from your iPad. Just do a simple search or just put 'print' into App Store search. It's not difficult!

  • Suggestions for use of EQ Cymbols, hi-hats, shakers PLEASE

One consistent mistake I'm making in my my mixes is trying to achieve a balance between "bright enough" sound at the high end (pianos, Cymbols - hi-hats - shakers, etc). It seems if you don't add EQ and sometimes compression to these tracks at all you can barely hear them and I hate that muffled sound. Then, however, at the back end of my projects, I'm constantly faced with having to elliminate clipping or distortion with these instruments. Please share some techniques without getting to technical if possible. I know this is a subjective call.
But For Example, maybe someone migght suggest for EQ on hi-hats on Frequency Gain/Slope:
    99.0Hz, +8.0dB 1.10Q
    500Hz, +0.0dB 0.71Q
    1080Hz, +2.0dB, 0.71Q
    7000Hz, +12.0dB, 0.6Q
I also could use help knowing where to set the volume for individual tracks at the BEGINNING of the project. That's the other problem - setting my individual track volumes too high then having to "dig them out" of the mix at the back end and not having enough volume "head room" to do it. - TOTAL REWORK.
Lastly, is it generally NOT a good idea to have "yellow" notes (val:80)?

Due to lack of assistance, we were unable to pursue this requirement - the users were not happy, but what can you do, huh!

Update 6/18: I have directed this thread to a manager of Palm's technical team, he advised me that many of these suggestions were forwarded to the development team and most are being worked on/considered. He also confirmed that an update is coming over the next couple weeks that will fix a few issues including the SSL issue with EAS... and there is another update that will fix the MSFP issues (security policies) with EAS email (in around 60 days) It's good to hear that Palm is very responisive to our needs and suggestions.
Update 7/11: Since this thread has received so much attention and ideas I have not been able to post all the different suggestions on this front page. I have put this forum thread in front of several sprint/Palm employees that do have a say in future updates... so please keep posting suggstions! Please also use the link below. Thanks!
