Tips for making strings sound more real

Basically i'm having trouble getting my strings from the exsp24 to sound real. mainly the violins. does anyone have any good tips?

It very much depends on what sort of music you are writing and what you want the strings to achieve.
As well as having decent sounding samples, you must make sure that what you are writing are typical string parts. You can have the most wonderful string samples in the world, but if you play "Chopsticks" with two fingers they'l still sound like some chimp playing "Chopsticks" with two fingers.
Broadly speaking, chords should be structured with wider spacing between the bottom notes than the top. Although complex classical music can have chords made up of 8 or more notes, pop music tends to have much simpler writing with perhaps only 4 parts or fewer.
Dynamics are also very important. Listen to any piece of classical string music and you'll notice there is a very wide dynamic range within phrases, and even within the length of a single note.
In general, the sort of sound that comes with Logic are good for long legato lines, or sustained block chords, or perhaps short stabbing sounds (think "Psycho). Because the violin is a fretless, fluid instrument, parts that require more sophisticated articulations will require a more up-scale library that features these articulations, and even then the results are not always great.

  • ___Any tips for making this sign look real(er)? Ai and/or Ps

I'm trying to make this sign* look like an actual real sign (like a sign that would have neon type lettering, but turned off during the day), that would hang above a restaurant/bar in a cosmopolitan city.
the client thinks it isn't 'real' lloking enough - any tips/suggestions/tutorials y'all can suggest?
9Not so much for the neon aspect - I think I have that covered) - All comments welcome!
*name in neon has been covered by green for this screenshot's purposes.

The trick is creating the illusion of depth and dimensions.  At a minimum you should be creating shadows and highlights ( difficult to recommend anything with seeing the actual artwork ).  Neon is a sophisticated illustration that will require quite a bit of detail ( even with the lights - off ).  Neon also has its own set of imperfections, so something computer generated will need to include those imperfections.  Consider "Blends".  Post your work so we can see how it is progressing.

  • VSTi plug-ins for orchestral/string sounds?

I see the 3 instruments that come with the Adobe Audition 3.0 when you first install it. I'm trying find a high quality VSTi plug-in for orchestral string sounds that is supported by Adobe Audition 3.0. There seem to be a lot of websites that offer free plug-ins, but I am not sure where to start. Does anyone have experience playing MIDI files with orchestral VSTi plug-ins?
    Thanks!

It's easy (if the VSTi 2.0 plugin you find works with Audition 3). Most only require you to copy the VSTi plugin.dll to the Audition VTSi plugin's directory and then rescan the plugins.
Take a look at www.gersic.com to see hundreds of free VST plugins and free VSTi plugins. A few are orchestral, just search the web page.

I'm not using any effects/plugins (yet) on my song, but will start mixing EQing/using plugins soon so need to try and stop
It really slowed down when I recorded (and copy pasted) a load of handclaps into it over the entire song and onto multiple tracks.

  • Suggestions for making a sound room

    Hello,
I have been an Audition user for 4 years and love this software! I mainly restore old recordings but I am looking at doing some more live recordings.
My ministry has recently been donated some money with which I what to build a sound room. it is in the middle of an appartment building. The sound room dementions are 16'L 11'W and 8'H. I can play a little with these dementions since the length wall is not yet up. Two of the walls are already existing the other two will be built. I don't need the room to be completely sound proof has the building is fairly quiet most of the time. I would just like to reduce sound into and out of the room not completely but enough to minimize unwanted noise. I have been reading a lot on sound rooms, sound proofing, reverberavtion, etc.
My main question is: I heard that a sound room should be at least 1500 cubic feet, since the walls are not yet up I was woundering if I should sacrifice the most room that I can and build a longer sound room as near to 1500 cubic feet as possible or if it really would not make that much difference.
I have attached a photo for your refference.
Any other suggestions you might have would be welcome.
    Thank you!

As an acoustician, I have to tell you that if the rest of the wall construction is like that partially built stud wall, you will have significant sound transmission through all of it - in both directions. You don't want to believe everything you read about how big a room should or shouldn't be - a satisfactory size depends largely on what you want to do with it, and the vast majority of rooms are compromised in this way anyway - but people still get acceptable results in them.
You do, though, appear to have fallen into the classic trap - you've started building a room primarily for acoustic purposes without consulting an acoustician at the outset - in other words, before a single stroke of work is done. Whenever anybody does that, the end result invariably costs them more, because of the amount of work that has to be torn down and redone properly. In your case I'd immediately stop right where I was with that stud wall, because the basic structure of it is just plain wrong in transmission terms.
You have two distinct problems that you need to address with this space - the first is the transmission of sound in and out (what is incorrectly referred to as 'soundproofing'), and the second is the internal treatment of the room in terms of its internal sound dispersion. These two things are only indirectly related, but without a lot more information about the second one, you can't even sensibly work on the first, because you won't have defined what is actually acceptable in terms of sound transmission in and out - it may well not be what you think.
My advice would be to engage a local acousician and get the treatment sorted properly. A lot of people claim that they haven't got the money for this, although in the long run it often saves them money - certainly in rebuild costs. The other thing you should do if you insist on organising this yourself, certainly in terms of sound transmission, is to have a good look at the UK building regs Approved Document E about this in relation to dwellings - it contains a lot of practical advice about actual construction methods to minimise it. Fortunately for you, it's a free download - here is a direct link to it. I'm not aware of another document quite like it anywhere...
Once you've got the structural parts right, the internal treatment is relatively straightforward for most of the things that people do in rooms like this. It invariably involves bass trapping in the corners, and treatment for monitor reflective paths at a bare minimum, and getting the overall reverb time to be acceptable for the applications you have in mind - whatever they are; you haven't said.

  • Tips for making master pages??

    Hello,
I am making a master page that will contain jpeg images, and I am having trouble getting them to "snap to" the guides". Before, in CS3, I remember when I moved an image close to a guide, it would automatically "snap to" it, but for some reason that doesn't seem to always happen here. I am not using the baseline or other grids at all, I have made guides. The guides are two perpendicular lines, and try to snap them to the right angle formed by the lines.
Hope that explanation wasn't confusing. I just want to find a good way to set up my master page and to establish guides. It is possible to use the "snap to" with guides alone and not the grids, right? To get rid of the grids I set the spacing for the lines for very large distances so they wouldn't appear at all.
Cheers for any assistance in advance...

    Hello,
Thanks for the replies. The "snap to" option is on, as well as the "guides in back" option. What will happen is, I drag an image within range of the guide (I'm not using a grid) and it will be very close, but I often have to adjust it slightly, for example (I have it set for inches as the unit of measurement) I want one image to be at  the guideline, which is .7817 but too I dragged (drug?) near to the guide ended u at .7823. Once I get this close to the guide, shouldn't the snap to" take over? BTW, my "snap to" zone is 12px.
I see that both "align to object edge" and "align to object center" are checked... should I uncheck "align to object center"?

  • How to Manually Perform software Updates and tips for making Macbook better

Hi. So recently my internet was really slow. I figured the problem out and now is working well. Although the youtube site does not allow me to view entire videos.
Well...i was told that since my macbook is turned off at night, it cant perform software updates between 3am-6am...so how can i do these manually? or how can i change the update time to sometime in the evening?
I heard these software updates are suppose to make the macbook run and perform better. what other things can i do to accomplish that?
(Laymans terms, im new to the mac world)

Select Software Update from the Apple menu. Or download the standalone updaters from Apple's download site - http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/. Or simply set the Check for Updates option in Software Update to whatever frequency you prefer. SU will notify you when updates are available.

  • Tips for making DVD@ccess works on PC reliably !!!

Anyone here have experience Authoring in DVDSP using DVD@ccess where your DVD will be played on a PC ??
I beleive you need to install the DVD@ccess plug-in but i can't seem to find it anywhere on the net. Also someone told me the plug in ( for PC ) is installed on the DVD once you authored with DVD@ccess but i can't seem to find it either. Any suggestion ??? Thanks

When you burn an image with DVD@ccess checked in your buld and burn window, it adds the file to the image -- NOTE: As I recall this only happens when you burn an image or master to a Tape backup.
Also, you can put an autostart.ini file on the DVD-rom portion of the disk that runs DVD@access, but unless you get a little fancy with you autostart file, it will try to install it every time!!!
Bottom line is, it's a little quirky!!! Good luck.

PS - there are some DVD programs that flat will not work with DVD@ccess. I think POWER DVD is one, but I can't remember.

  • Tips For Setting Up a Mac For a Senior Citizen?

I have given my 84 year old Mom my old iBook to use & I was just curious if anyone had any tips for making things easier for her. I enlarged the size of the cursor & made the text somewhat larger. She's basically just using it for Mail, but I would LOVE to get her internet savvy as well. I also just ordered some over-size stickers for the keyboard which should help. Anything else that anyone can think of...? She only visits once a year & I need to cram as much knowledge into her as I can in a week.

You're on the ball and doing just fine for her. Keep the dock relatively large and get rid of some of the apps there that might confuse her. Launch Safari and make sure the text in the web pages are large enough. What type of internet connection does she have? If it's broadband and not dial up she can keep the iBook running 24/7. She doesn't have to quit mail so she'll get your email all the time. And, maybe keep her away from eBay.

  • I just updated my iPhone 5 and Siri sounds more like a robot and I don't know what's wrong. My iPad Siri and my moms iPhone Siri sound like real people. Why doesn't my phone Siri sound like it should???

Siri sounds more robotic on my iphone for the iOS 7 update.....  Help????

    Hello smartbud,
The following article provides steps for changing the way Siri sounds.
Can I change how Siri sounds?
New female and male voices will be available initially in U.S. English, French, and German. You can change the gender by going to Settings > General > Siri > Voice Gender. Your iOS device initially uses a compact voice for Siri. iOS will automatically download and install a more natural-sounding voice when you first connect to power and a Wi-Fi network.

  • IPad is not making any sounds except for itunes, Pandora and Netflix. Need help.

From one day to another the iPad is not making any sounds (lock, keyboard, games) except for music on iTunes, Pandora and video on Netflix. All sounds are activated on the iPad's general settings. I have synced it and updated the OS to no avail. Any help or suggestions is gratly appreciated.

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Any Tips for editing Live Event 2 camera shoot?

I need to quickly edit a 2 DV camera recording of a live multi-scene performance (duration of 90 minutes), with audio additionally recorded on a good quality remote mic.
I have used FCE for some time, but not for several months. I have managed to forget many of the lessons learnt through trial and error, as well as by reading Tom wolsky's FCE Editing Workshop! So shortcut tips would be very helpful.
I am also using FCE 3.5 for the first time after my upgrade.
    1
I want to make a safety copy of the synced rushes, as well as keeping the original camera sound recording as a back-up guide track.
    2
I am worried about making sure I am working with Master clips, so that when I edit I don't mess up any of the source material. I am a little confused.
    3
I would appreciate anyone with any suggestions or tips for the best edit process, and any warnings or other guidance. Speed is of essence. (ie there is no budget).
    4
I am considering making separate sequences for each scene (14 scenes in all of varying length and complexity). Is this advisable rather than creating one programme length sequence?
    5
I am considering making the audio into one mono track for simplicity, as the auditorium acoustics have "mixed up" the sound, with little stereo separation. Should I then duplicate the track to build the sound quality at the end?
Any other general Tips always welcome.
Thank you in advance. I appreciate all the unsung contributors to this group.

I am a pretty good source for basic sound info - you can email me if you like
    [email protected]
you are right about the link - I am sorry - i checked the website before I typed the link in too! A blond moment
A low shelf filter - as included in FCE and soundtrack cuts the bottom off a soundmix. 20hz is a low frequency - not many speaker systems can reproduce this frequency, and most speaker systems can't even get to 40hz - even you high fi system or speakers which say they may be able too present sound for 20hz to 20khz - well unless you have spent an aweful lot of money and have a sub bass speaker the size of a car probably may only go down to 40hz, and the production of any 20hz sounds is more likely a feeling - a psychoacousticc effect. The thing about cutting off the bass is that practically it can make the recording sound less muddy, and you can make the recording sound louder. Most recordings for CD play have the bass started to roll of pretty heavily at 40hz and nothing present at 20hz... theirs this thing called narquist theory which talks about frequency responce - but it is this math heavy thing - so basically cut out a good amount of the sub bass. A low shelf filter does this and If you want to be conservative cut below 20hz, and if you want to be real give it a good cut below 35hz.
Now I was sure that their was a mac version of that monofilter that I saw on the web page - I have a PC and do most of my audio work on a PC as that is what I have used the most. If you can get the mono filter work it will make the bottom end sound much better - more natural - less clicky and perhaps abnoxious.... those of us who like trip hop are always striving to get a nice warm bass that represents itself well on a range of speakers. something smooth - it is a bit of a trick - monofilter is one of those tricks.
If you put the bass in mono (below 250hz ish) and keep the phase right speakers find it easier to work with the signal. Also stereo bass is not something that translates well on speakers... Bass tends to just flood the room where as the more mid and trebbly sounds give the audio a feeling of distance and space and left and right. The monofilter has a bass compression/limiting and phase correction built itno it, and implimented on a slider called 'trim'. Listen to your recording on good speakers and probably just bring the trim down a touch (my guess)... as complex as it sounds the monofilter is very easy to use, and is super clever. Now I thought that nugen had a mac audio unit plugin - that is a pity if they don't and kind of makes my advice seem irelevant unless you are prepared to download an application that can use VST's.
    Amy
be careful using an eq as most eq's disrupt the phase of the signal and can reek havok on live recordings. but do give it a low shelf filter at least below -20 but probably below -40 to -80 for practicalitys sake
This is a bit over my head, I am afraid. Do you know a source of basic info for sound recording to help explain such things? It could be a book or an online resource?
lol, what i meant was 20hz or 40 too 80hz - their is a low shelf filter in soundtrack that works well - I am talking about cutting off the low frequency bits of the recording here. Nugen audio has a little pdf that comes out with the monofilter talking about bass signals... I know it is geared towards music and perhaps music that you want to have a nice bass feel - however it translates to the real world too - You will be suprised at how great your audio will sound if you cut off a chunk of the sub bass, and put the low bass in mono.
then you could look at exciting the signal - but that is another story....

  • Hopefully useful tips for endless processing

I also posted this in reply to another user, but I think it might be useful enough to others that I will post it here so it's not so buried.
I'm just starting, after many, many hours, to see the light at the end of the tunnel with Aperture 3. I think A3 offers some great options, and is a diamond in the rough -- very, very rough, even in v3.0.1.
But I think I have some VERY USEFUL TIPS for you here (again this is after a lot of learning by pain... 4 different attempts to "upgrade" my A2.1.4 library (42K images about 200GB of images).
1st, and possibly most importantly the "SHIFT" key is your friend. You can use it when you restart A3 to stop the endless processing loop that A3 would fall into every time I upgraded or imported my library to A3 (or 3.01). All you need to do is hold down the "SHIFT" key while restarting A3, this should top all previously stuck processing as you upgrade your library. So use this tip after you first upgrade/import your library, if the processing bug hits. Then you have to be patient and go though your library and figure out where the problem files are (Apple has done a LOUSY job in not identifying what specific images A3 is processing in the "Activity Window" -- Let Apple know if this really bugs you)
2nd, at this point you will need to systematically go through your library and figure out where the "problem" files are and "fix" them (in my case all of these worked just fine in 2.1.4 - go figure). I would start by generating thumbnails for all of the images in a project, one project at a time (I had 150 some in my library). When you get stuck in the "processing" loop again, you can restart A3 using the "SHIFT" trick, and maybe just try a chunk of images within that same project until you find where things fail again, and until you can get to the offending image (if it's a problem you won't be able to generate a thumbnail for the image -- and A3 will go into endless "processing" mode)
3rd, this sound like a horribly tedious process and it is. But I can offer you some useful tips. In my case, and others as well apparently, a lot of the offending files are 16-bit PSD or TIFF images, especially if they had adjustments applied in A2.1.4. In my case I had fewer than 50 of these, so I exported an original and a jpg for each of these files. I re-imported the jpg and deleted the PSD/TIFF from A3 (I kept the exported original for future use). These files would then generate thumbs without endlessly processing. The other type of file that I ran into problems with were stitched panoramic images (often over 30MP) that I had applied adjustments to in A2.1.4. I simply removed the adjustments and the generated thumbs for them (worked like a charm).
4th, download some good podcast, music or audiobook... this will take a long time.
Cheers, and look me up in FaceBook I started a group called "Apple Please Fix Aperture"

    Danny,
Funny you should mention this.... (actually it makes you look a bit like a "schill", even though you are not)... nope, as far as I can tell there is no way to tell which specific images are causing A3 to grind to a halt.
    Hence my comment:
"(Apple has done a LOUSY job in not identifying what specific images A3 is processing in the "Activity Window" -- Let Apple know if this really bugs you)" and similar previous ones in other posts.
I wonder if Steve, yes that one, knew about this, being the perfectionist he seems to be, if he would have this feature included in Activity Monitor ASAP, or more likely it would have just been fixed by now (more of a "one-button" solution). Anyone have his house #?
In any case, I please let me (us) know if this helps resolve your problems... and consider joining the Facebook group as well and maybe we can hope for a much better 3.x.x version in the very near future.

  • Howto set tool tip for a row in JTable

I want to set a seperate tool tip for each of the rows in JTable. I tried getting cell renderer of all columns in a row and then setting tool tip for them. I expected that setting tool tip for a cell renderer will set tool tip for that cell. Thus setting tool tip for all the cells in a row will indirectly set tool tip for that row. But it does not happen that way. By setting a tool tip for a renderer it will use that tool tip for all those cells which use that renderer.
Is there any problem in my approach or we cannot do this in Java.
    regards.

    Thanks.You're wellcome.
    >
I just saw this method in JComponent and realized this
    solution.
But then thought that for doing this i'll have to
create my JTable class for just overiding one method
thereby increasing one more level of abstraction.Well, you could override the method in an inner class if I understand you correctly in assuming that you don't want to create a JTable as new separate class. You could do this:
    JTable yourtable = new JTable() {
      public String getToolTipText( MouseEvent e ) {
        return getToolTipForRow( rowAtPoint( e.getPoint() ));
// some where else in your class
    getToolTipForRow( int row ) {
      // determine your tooltip here
}I think this would be a bit nicer and slightly faster approach because as far as I understand the getToolTipText() method is called after a similar MouseEvent for every JComponent i.e. a small pause of cursor movement over the component in question. I admit that I haven't tested either approach myself but noticed that JTable actually overrides the getToolTipText( MouseEvent e) method already. In your code you determine and set the tooltip every time the mouse moves. If you override getToolTipText( MouseEvent e) you have to determine the tooltip text only when the tooltip is actually about to be shown.
