SunBlade100@HomeViaRCNCable

Hi, I'm an aspiring systems/web administrator, and I am trying to host a Sun Blade 100(Solaris 8) as a web server at home, running RCN's dynamic ip - cable/coax modem. I'm having trouble running DHCP/DDNS; I haven't installed any third-party software, or even patches on it. I'm at a complete loss. I have also recently registered with easyDNS, under their dynamic ip dns agreement. Can anyone help me?
P.S. -
- bootp reads netgear card(NIC)
- tried using dhcpconfig
- attempted using information from
http://www.rite-group.com/consulting/solaris_dhcp.html
Thanks in advance.

If yiu find the patch for 2.4 the procedure is the same.

  • Netscape browser in SunBlade100

    Hi,
I'm facing a problem by viewing my website in netscape, under SunBlade100, is that, I have 2 flash files in the main page of the website, and when it's loaded, the browser closed. I've taken out that 2 files from the main page, and the page can be loaded. But I've tried to put that 2 flash files in a single html page, it can also be loaded. and finally, the main page can be loaded after such experiment. I'm wondering why it's like that, and everytime I would need to do such experiment to get my page displayed? Please email ([email protected]) back to me if you know what's going on. A million thanks.

    Ravi,
I was having the same problem. It seems to be a problem with Netscape. I
found that it was only Netscape running on the same machine as the server.
When Netscape was running on a separate machine it was just as fast as ie.

  • Terminal window blinking cursor will not accept keyboard entry

    Have SunBlade100 w/ Solaris8.
This is probably a dumb beginner question...
When I enter certain commands at the terminal window - in this particular case
    # cat /dev/cua/a
and I hit <return> the cursor skips to the next line, and
continues blinking , and will not accept any keyboard entries.
    1. What is the significance of this? Is the cursor waiting further action, and if so, what?
    2. How do I get back to the prompt?
    3. Under this condition, is it safe to exit the terminal window by closing from the Window menu? (I can't type "exit" because the cursor won't accept keyboard entries, and Help for "closing the terminal" warns against closing from the Window menu because any background processes will not be terminated (and this may cause problems).
Thanks in advance for any info on this.

Thanks again for the info. <control>+C was exactly what I was looking for. It's coming back to me now-- the last time I had contact w/ UNIX was back in '85 at UC Berkeley (no GUI's back then!).
I'm assuming that <control>+C is a graceful (i.e. relatively harmless way to exit the command.

  • Solaris 8 config for DSL

I want to reconfigure my standalone SunBlade100 for DSL service. The OS is Solaris 8 10/01, and is currently configured for dial-up access to an ISP.
I've edited the etc/hosts, etc/resolve.conf, and etc/nsswitch.conf files, and I created an etc/defaultrouter file containing the gateway IP address.
Sun PPPD 4.0 is installed, and includes PPPoE.
My question is what else do I need to do in order to complete the configuration?
Are there any good references for Solaris DSL configuration?
    Thanks in advance?

    Hello,
I supose that its an errata but its /etc/resolv.conf and not /etc/resolve.conf.
Your access internet via a router. I dont know about DSL but if its a standar router you shoudnt have to configure pppd, just a normal network access with the routing and the naming service properly configured.
If you edit /etc/defaultrouter, the changes will take effect on the next reboot, so maybe youll have to add a route manually if you cannot shutdown the machine:
    route add default your_router_ip
This way you should ping your router, if the routing is properly configured your dns server too (specifying its IP) and finally if the naming service is well configured, any Full Qualyfied Domainame on internet.
Try this and post the results. Bye,

  • Relinking problem while installing oracle 9i on solaris 9

    Hello,
i have big problems installing oracle9i on solaris 9. machine is a sunblade100 64 bit sparc architecture.
installation went fine until compiling / relinking the binaries. i ignored the messages because i wanted to compile binaries later with the "relink" command.
After exectuting the command i encountered following message:
    /export/home/oracle9/OraHome1/bin/genclntsh
ld: fatal: dlopen() of support library (libmakestate.so.1) failed with error: ld.so.1: /usr/ccs/bin/sparcv9/ld: fatal: libmakestate.so.1: open failed: No such file or directory
    my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is
    /export/home/oracle9/OraHome1/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/ccs/lib:/usr/sadm/lib
    my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH_64 is
    /usr/lib/64
the file libmakestate.so.1 exists in /usr/bin.
its 32bit, might that be a problem ?
well, i also installed the packages
SUNWbtool, SUNWlibm, SUNWarc, SUNWhea and SUNWsprot, which are necessary for compiling (see installation handbook)
did you have the same problems? is it only a system path problem?
    please help,
    thanks in advance,
    yours frank

    Hi,
Yes, You Need the 64-bit version of the libmakestate.so.1 library. This library should exist in the /usr/lib/sparcv9 directory. you Have to installed required Solaris package for this file. The package name is: SUNWsprox Sun WorkShop Bundled 64-bit make library You can check for this package by running the following command: % pkginfo -i SUNWsprox If it is not installed, install it and retry the relink.
    Hope this ll help you.

  • Where can i find network registrar tool for solaris.

    Hi All,
I am trying to find Network Registrar tool to install on my solaris server. i tried on Internet to find, but i am not able to find the soucre file.
Anyone from you know where will i find the soucre file to download?
    thanking you in advance
    Yogesh.

You will find drivers in Solaris for Ethernet controllers supported on your SB100:
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunBlade100/components.html#Ethernet
Your 2 choices are to contact 3 Com for a Solaris SPARC 32/64 bit driver or search the web to see if some intrepid soul has created one. Otherwise you will not get this to work.

  • Where can I get a cheap U10-440 or SB100 system in Germany

    Hello
are there any recommended resellers where I can get a working U10-440Mhz, SunBlade100 or similar SPARC workstation ?

    Hello Matthias,
are there any recommended resellers .. ?
These systems are pretty cheap today, even if you buy a partly faulty system, you can use the working parts as spares.
Please keep in mind that a reseller is bound to offer 12 month of warranty (German customer law), this has be to taken into account. Maybe it's cheaper to buy two systems on eBay instead of one from a reseller.
Directly recommending a reseller is against the Code of Conduct (advertising).

  • HFS drive bad/missing superblock magic number

Should an HFS drive have a superblock and magic number or is that strictly a UFS thing? I get this error but my drive is Mac formatted.

    Hi,
You can run "fsck" command by giving the alternate superblock. The alternate superblock should have given during the filesystem creation in the disk using the "newfs" command. If there is nothing you need to run the "newfs" command for the filesystem creation where you will loose your entire data.

  • Keyboards

The manual mentions using PS/2 keyboards with adapters but is there a drawback aside from easy keystrokes? I have a SunBlade100,uses USB,with an adapter for PS2 and scroll wheel mouse, after power on beep code it sits blank screened is this from the keyboard?Someone last nite mentioned the Unix keyboard sequences and the need for the system to access them, not possible with the mini din keyboard of well known competitors.
What is he part number for the USB keyboard and mouse?Would like a three button for Ultra60 as well.
Was thinking maybe NVRAM was bad or controller card,no response from cd drive yet light is on(remains on) and its button doesnt open it etc.Or a wrong jumper setting, manual states these proper enable etc.
Where can I find the proper shortcut keystrokes for their keyboard?Sys adm manual has mainly comand statement as does users manual,BSD uses different keystrokes ,I think?.

    Hello.
    I have a SunBlade100,uses USB,with an
adapter for PS2 and scroll wheel mouse, after power on
beep code it sits blank screened is this from the
keyboard?Connect another computer to the Blade using an RS-232 cable. Use a terminal emulator program and 9600 (19200 ???) bauds. Probably you'll get the message "No keyboard detected"; in this case the Blade will use the serial port as I/O, instead of screen and keyboard.
The manual mentions using PS/2 keyboards with
adapters but is there a drawback aside from easy
    keystrokes?
Someone last nite mentioned the Unix
keyboard sequences and the need for the system to
access them, not possible with the mini din keyboard
    of well known competitors.Hmm.
The important thing is the "Stop" key. There are two combinations that are needed when booting the Blade in OPB mode:
    - Stop-A (cannot be done with a PC keyboard -> Use Stop-N instead)
    - Stop-N (can be emulated by double-clicking the power button (just like double clicking the mouse) after the Blade does its first sound.)
I have a standard USB Windows PC keyboard on my Blade 1000. Everything works well. The "compose" key is done using "Ctrl+Alt+F1".
What is he part number for the USB keyboard and
mouse? Both type 6 and type 7 variants exist. Each of them in different keyboard layouts (e.g. US-UNIX, US-PC, German, French, ...)
They all have different part numbers (you'll find them on sun.com).
You may also find used Sun keyboards at eBay.
Would like a three button for Ultra60 as well. The Ultra 60 has a 8 pin Sun connector - as far as I know. Type 4, 5 and 6 mice are available with this plug.
There are circuits that allow you to connect PS/2 mice to 8 pin Sun connectors, too.
If your Ultra60 has USB you can also use an USB mouse (Solaris 9 (8 with patches) or newer) if you modify the configuration files.
You may even use an RS-232 serial mouse but you need special software in this case.
When using Linux (maybe this is true for BSD, too) you may use serial mice and USB mice without any modifications to the OS.
Was thinking maybe NVRAM was bad or controller
card,no response from cd drive yet light is
on(remains on) and its button doesnt open it etc.Or a
wrong jumper setting, manual states these proper
    enable etc.This sounds very bad.
Where can I find the proper shortcut keystrokes for
their keyboard?Sys adm manual has mainly comand
statement as does users manual,BSD uses different
keystrokes ,I think?.Your problem is to get the machine to work in OPB mode (this is before the OS is loaded) so your problem is OS independent.
    I'd do the following steps:
    - Try the serial port variant (with no keyboard connected; you cannot do this if you do not have a serial null-modem cable)
    - Try to use an USB keyboard (not a PS/2 keyboard with circuit)

  • Solaris 8 and dialup connection

I have a SunBlade100 running Solaris8 with a dialup connection to the internet using a 56k external modem. The connection has been fine until several days ago when the dialup script started ending at
    "call cleanup (0)"
    with the following error message:
"10:08:43 process_ppp_msg: PPP_ERROR_IND maximum number of configure requests exceeded".
The following Q&A is from docs.sun.com:
Problem: Cannot establish PPP link. Operation fails with the status message:
"PPP error on ip_interface: Maximum number of
    configure requests exceeded"
Solution: PPP Configure-request frames are generated to start the link
establishment phase. After a certain number of frames (defined by the keyword lcp_max_restart in the file ppp.conf) are generated without a valid response, the client assumes that the remote server is unreachable. This may indicate one of the following:
There is a problem with the physical connection between the two hosts. Check the cable to your modem.
PPP is not running on the remote host. Check that PPP is configured and started at both ends of the link.
The link establishment phase is not completed, because the configuration negotiation does not converge. Check for configuration problems.
If you are trying to establish a link over a long-delay network, such as a satellite connection, or over a congested line, the maximum number of configure requests may be exceeded before the negotiation is completed. Increase the maximum number of configure requests sent (lcp_max_restart) and the time between retries (lcp_restart_timer).
My question is: where do you go to edit the variables "lcp_max_restart " and "lcp_restart_timer" ?
Thanks in advance for any info!

    Thanks for the reply.
I did a file search for ppp.conf as it doesn't exist at /etc/opt/SUNWconn/ppp/.
It doesn't seem to exist anywhere on my computer!
Is ppp.conf the normal location for the variables "lcp_max_restart " and "lcp_restart_timer"?

  • Fax Modem for SunBlade 100

    Hi,
I am now trying to find a good modem which can be used for fax as well as for ppp dial-in/dial-up on SunBlade100.
Anyone can give me some hints or suggestions which modem is convenient for that and pls not too expensive one.
    Thanks in advanced
    Paulus

All the major brands of modems work fine for ordinary data dial-in and dial-out work. See sunsolve.sun.com for Infodocs 28032, 42803, and 43221 for examples of how to make the modem and Solaris cooperate.
I've never dealt with fax software, though, so there aren't any specific recommendations I can make. Check the documentation for the fax software carefully to see what they recommend. If you're planning to receive faxes as well as send them, you might need to use the mgetty program to answer incoming calls, instead of the default Solaris ttymon.

  • HCL PCI Enet ethernet adapter  in SUN blade100

    Hi!
Please help me in installing HCL PCI ENET Adapter in SUN BLADE100.
i am unable to find its driver and related files on this machine installed with solaris8.
    Thank you,
    hariom

HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) is for Intel based X86 Solaris only. Not SPARC Solaris.
Supported Ethernet cards that have SPARC Solaris drivers already in the OS, for the Sun Blade 100 can be found at: http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/handbook_pub/Systems/SunBlade100/components.html#ETHER
If you are using any othe PCI Ethernet card you will have to contact the manufacturer to see if they have written any SPARC Solaris drivers for it.
