SunFire E4900 Mysterious Reboot

Hi!, One of our SunFire E4900's went down today and I am trying to figure out why. This is one of our most critical systems and any crash is considered a major issue to the company. I have opened a ticket with Sun but they were not too helpful stating that I don't have a core dump so they cannot help. However I decided to seek the help of the members on this forum to see if you could provide some guidance on 1. Why a core dump was not saved. 2. What caused the system to reboot and is it possible to diagnose with just the /var/adm/messages file and the logs from the system controller.
Here is a dump of the /var/adm/messages file right after the crash:

According to the logs a dump was taken successfully and should be in /var/crash/sapp01n according to the log statements seen here:
dumping to /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s1, offset 65536, content:
M100% done: 383594 pages dumped, compression ratio 2.97,
and the output from our dumpadm
sapp01:root:/->dumpadm
Dump content: kernel pages
Dump device: /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s1 (dedicated)
Savecore directory: /var/crash/sapp01n
Savecore enabled: yes
However, when I navigate to the dump directory in /var/crash/sapp01n, I do not see any core dump the directory is blank. Why is our system not saving coredump info and how can we diagnose a crash without one?
Next are the logs from the crash itself:

Can anyone decipher what this could possible mean? Sun support is totally lost and basically turned me away because of no core dump. Could this have been a CPU issue causing the system to panic. We recently had the CPU's replaced on this system and the system has been running for less than a year.
Thanks for the help.

First, is there any logging in the reboot after the crash about savecore being unable to extract the crash dump from your dump device? Maybe there wasn't enough space to extract the crash dump files?
Second, what's the mod time on the /var/crash/sapp01n directory? If it's after the crash, maybe something removed the crash dump files.
Third, if you're lucky maybe your crash dump is still on your dump device (another benefit of having a dedicated dump device) and you can run "savecore -d" to extract it. And if there isn't enough space to extract it, you can also specify the location you want the crash dump files written to. Read the man page for "savecore".
Fourth, that log file looks to me that you had some memory go bad on you.

You use 25 male connector for connect to SC, DB9 female connector for connect to USB converter, but this cable must be null-modem.

  • Why does Lion immediately reboot with FileVault Enabled?

I have two laptops, both with Lion installed and both are updated to the latest patches.
Here's the process I go through:
    Shutdown the laptop
Do something else (take a nap, eat a sandwich, whatever)
    Boot laptop
    Log in
Here I get the little grey pinwheel for a while (30+ seconds, far longer that I'd expect with either a brand new Air or a 2010 MBP 15")
    Experience an immediate reboot.
    Profit
After that mysterious reboot, everything is fine. I went through my profile and removed every startup item and stripped everything out of my LaunchAgents folder. The problem still persisted. On a lark, I disabled FileVault. After FileVault was disabled and I rebooted, everything worked fine. I was able to shutdown my computer without fear of a double reboot.
I re-enabled FileVault to test out my assumption and, sure enough, the problem was back.
Is there something that could be causing this that I'm not aware of and my Mac is behaving oddly because of weird things I've done? I've included my logs (apologies for the length of the post).

I'm experiencing the same problem. I've called AppleCare repeatedly for a solutiuon, but I haven't gotten an answer yet and like you above I removed just about anything I could think of. I'd like to start considering third party apps we might have installed that maybe to blame.
Why? Because I installed a fresh copy of Lion onto a Class 10 SD card and then later I turned on full disk encryption there. I no longer experienced the problem after I booted from that card.
I also experienced a problem with full disk encryption with my 2010 MacBook Air sitting doing nothing at the encryption login screen. It spontaneously restarted three times before I turned it off. Later I moved to a 2011 model and did not see the spontaneously restarts again.
Now I'm stuck with this annoying double login.

  • Need help about boot SUNFIRE V120

    Hi all....
I need help about how to change boot from boot net to boot disk....
after i installed sun solaris 10 at my sunfire v120, then reboot the machine ... this sunfire still boot from net not from disk...
    can i change it?
please i really need help ....
    thanks

If its booted, try "eeprom boot-device=disk"
If your at the OBP, "setenv boot-device disk".
If that doesnt work check the value of "diag-switch?".
It could be booting off the the diag-device instead

  • New External Monitor for Logic on MacBook Pro - Suggestions

I'm in the painful process of updating my studio and now my large screen external monitor has started failing.
I know if this a pretty general question more suited to the MacBook Pro forum but I'd like some input from folks used to working with an application like Logic in a home studio environment.
I guess the issue for me is that I'm not getting any younger and my eyesight isn't what it used to be. One of the things specific to Logic and music software in general is that there are LOTS of very detailed dialog boxes with text that is not always height adjustable (yes I know about zooming and indeed I do lots of that but it gets quite distracting). The other factor is that I'm often recording and engineering myself which means I'll be sitting with a guitar in my lap or at a keyboard and can't always lean in too close to the monitor.
I solved this by buying a large 26" Acer which sits on my desk behind the Mackie MCU. To my left I've got the MacBook 15.4" Pro on a keyboard stand above my MIDI controller at a 45 degree angle to the desk.
It's worked quite well until the Acer seems to have become haunted. It will mysteriously reboot itself intermittently, going blank for a second, then showing the Acer logo and going back to picture. It will also turn itself on spontaneously when the computer is off (the status light is off and then turns itself on). It seems to detect when I'm in the middle of a really good session and starts resetting itself every 30 seconds or so. Then it will work fine sometimes for days or weeks at a time. I've checked it on 4 different computers, it malfunctions on all. I believe in may be a problem with one of the capacitors or the inverter, I'm not sure, but it's driving CRAZY at this point.
And of course now it's 3 months out of warranty and may be more expensive to fix than buying a new one.
So my issue is what monitor to replace it with. I've considered buying an Apple monitor, since the display is lovely to look at but there are a couple things that are deal breakers.
    It's expensive. Very expensive.
Oddly you have to choose between a 24" and a 30", with nothing in between. Don't want to sound like Goldilocks here, but the 24 is tooooo small and the 30 is tooooo big.
Yeah I know bigger is usually better but since they bumped the native resolution of the 30" up to 2560x1600 it's really sharp but things like the menu text get really quite small. Yes you can reset to a lower non native resolution, but then you loose the sharpness. I tested Logic in the store on the 30" and it did look great but I found I actually had to move my whole body around to see things at the top and bottom of the screen.
Oh and did I mention that it's expensive? Jeez.
The 24" now seems to look a bit small to me after using the same resolution (1920x1200) on the Acer's 26" screen. (Ok, I think it's actually 25.5 but hey that half an inch can make a big difference and I will avoid making any bad jokes here).
And did I mention the Apple monitors are expensive? The 24" is almost 3 times as expensive as a cheaper alternative.
I also still have a PC here that I use (sorry) and the Apple monitors have very limited connectivity. So I think unfortunately the Apple monitors are out for me.
So I;m down to a couple other non Apple options. I will not buy an Acer again since I believe now that their quality control is not good and their support is absolutely atrocious. Shame I used to be a big fan of Acer PC's, but after owning a couple I'm steering clear.
My biggest issue right now is that most of the new budget monitors are geared toward 1080p HD uses so they are they are maxing out at 1920x1080 (16:9 aspect ratio instead of 1920x1200's 16:10). So the tradeoff here is that HD movies will look better in 16:9, but 16:10 gives you "squarer" pixels and more vertical resolution for screen hungry apps like Logic.
Any opinions on this? I'm a bit new to the Mac so I don't know if I'm really better off going with a 1920x1200 screen like the Apple monitors.
Also, I know this may just be a bug in the Acer's scaling, but if I switch to 1920x1080, I lose the menus off the top of the screen or if I adjust the vpos I lose the dock at the bottom. Downscaling to 1600x1050 or even 1024x768 works fine. If I get a 1080 screen and set the resolution appropriately will it work correctly and without too much distortion?
I'm also curious what is the best way to hook up the monitor? I'm currently using the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the MacBook. My Pro is the slighter older silver keyboard model so it has the standard DVI out. Will I see any real improvement by going over to using DVI directly?
Also I'm wondering how people feel about glossy vs matte for music. My current displays are the non-glossy and I do think I prefer them for detail work.
    The candidates right now are
Hanns-G HH-281HPB 28" @300$. It's one of the only budget monitors that uses 1920x1200. All the right inputs (DVI, VGA). I'm just afraid this might be a bit too good to be true. It's really cheap and after having problems with a "cheap" Acer (although it wasn't so cheap 3 years ago!) I don't want similar problems. Stand has no swivel or tilt (a big problem for my use). Also that resolution on such a big screen might be good for me or it might look grainy I don't know I haven't seen it. Anybody have any experience with these?
Samsung P2770H 27" @339 Looks nice, good color. Sadly only 1080 native resolution. Stand doesn't swivel, but does tilt. No VGA input, so won't work with my old PC (although strangely it says it comes with a VGA cable). They get generally good reviews and I know Samsung makes very good flat panel TV's.
ViewSonic X Series VX2739WM 27" @350. Once again maxes out at 1080. It's fast (1ms), has VGA input. I've never been a big fan of ViewSonic but they do seem to have gotten better color-wise. Tilt no swivel and it's anti-glare (not sure this is a plus).
There are also similar options from HP, Asus, LG and Sceptre but they are all 1080. In fact outside of the Apples, the Hanns-G and a few expensive monitors from NEC they all seem to be 1080. So if I really want the 1200 the Hanns-G seems like the only way to go.
Any input here would be greatly appreciated.

No doubt, the Apple displays are gorgeous. The first time I saw the 30" display wow, I wanted one BAD and it's actually what prompted me to buy a "big" monitor. The colors are great with a rich wonderful saturation level and as usual for Apple the form factor design is stunning. You know for that picture quality I could even get over the sticker shock and save up for one.
Which is why I was so disappointed when I actually sat down in the store and started to use Logic on one. I imagine for doing video work, graphic design or darn near anything else, it would be great. But for Logic I just found myself bending and twisting trying to look at toolbar at the bottom and then up to look at the menus. And instrument or plugin displays that were hard coded to look OK at lower resolutions looked really, really tiny to me. For me and particularly using Logic having 2 slightly smaller displays at a 45 degree angle makes more sense.
And once again the 24 seems just a bit small. I don't understand why they have a 27" iMac but you can't buy a 27" display. So iMac 27" starting at 1699, subtract out the cost of the CPU and drive ie the Mini and I'd really buy one. Strangely you can buy a 21.5" or a 27" iMac. Or you can buy a 24" or 30" display. Hmmmm.
So don't get me wrong I'm not bashing Apple for being expensive. They put a lot of money into R&D and into really thinking about the form and the function of their products. As a recent convert from being a PC developer for 25+ years, hey I've more than sipped the Kool-Aid here, I've guzzled it. They make great products and yeah they're more expensive, because they ARE better! I've now got 2 MBP's, 2 iPods, I'm about to get an iPhone (silly "death grip" or not) and I really want an iPad. Heck I'd really love an 8 core MacPro if I could afford one (alas I can't).
I guess my only gripe here is that there always seems to be a little less choice in the Apple world. Yeah, I know they do a lot less volume than the PC clone world I just think that they always seem to have a big gap between the high end and low end with not enough in between. So you can choose between the lower end and one piece units with no expansion boards (the mini or the iMac) or go straight to monster tower MacPro (way over 3K with display). You can get a MacBook but then you have to put up with a small screen or go with MacBook Pro, which let's face it is a lot of computing power for someone who just wants to web surf and write some email without squinting.
So here I am stuck in the middle. I don't want to buy a HannspreeQG or another piece of junk that's going to last 3 years and 3 months because of a crappy $2 capacitor that no seems to able to fix or care about fixing. I'd like to buy a really nice Apple monitor, I just want a big monitor, not a huge one and not a "medium" one (I know I'm spoiled but 24" seems "medium" these days).
Sorry about the rant here but my monitor is shutting down every 30 seconds and I'm about to go completely insane and toss it out the window!!!
Really glad to hear about that 84' VGA cable. I never imagined such a thing existed or would work without some sort of signal boost on the way. Very cool for me. My electronic drum kit is in another room and I would love to have a small cheap monitor next to it for sequencing. I had my laptop on a stand next to it for a while but I began to get terrified that I'd let a drumstick slip and destroy my laptop screen. That would be a very bad thing. Thanks for the tip.

  • Mega 180 Temps

Let me start off by saying that the Mega 180 is a great idea for a product but unfortunately it is not finished.  MSI is using us as beta testers - at our expense.  I build computers for people as a side business and against my better judgement, I built a customer a Mega 180 based system and I've had nothing but problems with it and it's damaging my reputation.  But, OK enough of that.
One major problem with the Mega 180 is it's CPU and hard drive temp and here's what you can do to fix it.  First off, the CPU heat sink is nice and big and made of copper - very nice.  However, the underside of the sink (the part that touches the CPU) is absolutely aweful!  The bottom should be mirror smooth.  Mine looks like the surface of a record.  Therefore, you need to lap it.  Look this process up on the net to see exactly how to do it.  Once lapped and the bottom is mirror smooth and you can see your reflection, use ARTIC SILVER thermal grease (just a tiny bit) and put the sink back on.  Your CPU temp under load will be about 8 degrees cooler.  Next, replace the small fan on the cooler with a bigger one (make sure you use one that's sensored, like the one you're replacing).  Lastly, get some flexible ducting from the hardware store (plastic, not aluminum), attach one end over the sink's big fan and carefuly route the other end to the side of the case (may not be possible if you are using an AGP card) and position it so it sucks in outside air.  Now that your CPU is cooled with fresh air, you will see another 2 - 3 degree reduction of CPU temp.
Finally, the hard drive is way too hot.  I measured it with a IR temp meter after a full defrag and my jaw hit the ground when I saw how hot it was - 152 degrees F.  That type of temp will kill your hard drive.  Fix this by placing a fan inside the case (RAM side) blowing fresh air right onto the hard drive.  This brought the temp down significantly.  It also cooled other items too (CD drive, chipset).
The only downside to this is your system will be louder due to fan noise.  However you will have fewer system lock-ups and mystery reboots (caused by overheated components).
One last idea, if the case is just too cramped for you, remove the power supply, buy a new one and mount it outside the case on the back.  It doesn't look good but it sure frees up space and improves air flow (plus you'll have more power if you buy a higher watt supply).
    Peace!

    Hey cb31,
Even though this thread is about temps, I too think noise is the biggest problem with the Mega, and my current efforts are targeted at killing the constant background noise. My goal is the same as your's - I want to leave the computer on most of the time and not be bothered with it.
I'm proceeding slowly however, and so far I've only done the following:
-Replaced the 60mm Delta fan with a Papst of the exact same size. I found the Delta to be noisy, while others report that it's doing ok. Don't know about you... The Papst is really quiet and actually cools a little bit more effective, though that's a bonus feature! But on the overall it didn't have the effect I hoped for
-The smaller Delta fan (outtake side of heatsink) already is quiet enough, so doesn't need to be replaced on behalf of noise anyway...
-Took out the PSU and put White Lithium Grease in the fan for smoother operation since I figured it made a lot of noise. That didn't help much either... I'm thinking about replacing the PSU fan with something better, even though a lable on the back of the PSU states "W/ Noisekiller". It's still a no-name fan and can be improved upon.
Right now the loudest noise in my Mega doesn't seem to come from any fan at all, but rather from the hd. And it's not so much the actual noise from the unit as vibrations reverberating through the chassis. A common problem obviously, but there isn't any room for hd suspension systems in the Mega, so other actions are required here! I tried to slide in thin sheets of plastic between the drive and the cage, to act as silencers, but that didn't have any real effect as the cage touches the drive in several places, thus transfering the vibrations anyway. A new drive cage could do the trick, but I haven't gotten that far yet, and might not ever...
The Seagate Barracuda is considered to be a silent drive, so replacing it probably wouldn't help.
To conclude: If your fans are noisy, replace them or grease them for better operation, but you might not even hear the difference...
The major flaw seems to be the internal design of the Mega, and there's isn't much to be done about that, unless you're handy with a Dremel and sheets of metal.  I might be, but I will have to get back to you on that!
    Cheers!

  • I am so frustrated! It may be a coincidence, but when I installed Mountain Lion, upon syncing,  1st Gen Apple Tv went into a boot loop, and apple will do nothing to help with it.  What can I do? If not fixed, will NEVER buy qp another product from them ag

Never done this before. My Apple TV was perfect until I installed Mountain Lion. Upon syncing my Apple tv, it mysteriously rebooted, asking me language and tv type. Then the Apple comes on, flashing light, and back to language. Apple said hey no longer support it, though it is not very old. Wasted $399. I had ips 180 g almost full of movies, pics, etc. that are now gone. What can I do?  Very unhappy with Apple, now.

You can buy Microsoft Office for Mac, it includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Or you can download a free copy of LibreOffice which contains substitutes (good ones) for the Microsoft Office programs.
Do not even think of using Boot Camp unless you have a complete and current TM backup or a clone to restore if it goes wrong. You will also need to buy Windows and Microsoft Office for it. And you MUST read the directions very carefully.

  • Unable to make tWo concurrent logins to the firewire Hard Disk from RHEL 3.

    Hello
I tried setting up a firewire(shared storage) ORACLE 10 G RAC CLUSTER using OCFS/ASM using your install guidelines
but this failed.Below is the scenario.
Hardware : compaq intel PC's with 1 GB RAM
Members in the cluster : Two
Operating system : RHEL AS 3 / FEDORA CORE -3 (both being tried one after the other)
    Oracle 10G RAC version : 10.1.0.3.0
HDD : Maxtor one touch II 250 GB with combo interface Firewire/USB 2.0
    N/W Adapters : Two public interconnect,Two private interconnect thru 10/100 internet Hubs/switches
Firewire card details: FireWire (IEEE 1394): Agere Systems (former Lucent Microelectronics) FW323 (rev 05)
    Failure Description
I successfully loaded the drivers for the Maxtor one touch II in the two Linux (RHEL 3) boxes. But after a restart, at any point of time,
the disk is detected only by one node. It is detected in the other node only if the first node is powered OFF. On investigating we found the
following error message by running "dmesg | grep sbp2" command as root

    Thanks & Regards
    Raghavan

    Hello All,
I work as the system admin for Raghavan. Thanks to all those who took time to reply to our queries. Sorry for the lengthy mail. Let me go through the whole sequence of what we did initially.
    1. Installed RHEL 3 with Agere PCI Firewire cards.
    2. Installed Firewire Kernel kernel-2.4.21-27.0.2.ELorafw1 on top of it.
    3. Modules were loaded properly and the Firewire hard disk was accessible from both the nodes.
    4. Everything went fine during OCFS and ASM installation.
    5. We were installing the CRS and that too went fine till 99% and the final step of running the root.sh in one of the nodes gave an error message as follows
"Failure at final check of Oracle CRS Stack
    0"
    6. So we thought of reinstalling CRS and deleted the Voting disk file directly from the shared disk. We deleted the file manually from one of the nodes using the "rm -rf" command and that too before uninstalling OCFS.
Now both the disks went out of sync. The voting disk and CRS file was still visible from the other node. So we did a reboot of both the nodes one by one. After this MYSTERIOUS reboot at any point of time only one node was able to detect the hard disk.
Finally after nearly two months of head scratching (really lost lot of my hair in this :)) we were able to get concurrent logins from both the nodes now! Thanks to the reply by Member no 279089. I bought and installed a TI(TSB43AB23)card on one node and a VIA chipset card on the other. And finally the magic worked. I am able to partition the disk and the partitions are visible from both the nodes.
But now we have a new problem. When we invoke the OCFSTOOL from one node (VIA card node), the previous OCFS partion (the one which was done before the MYSTERIOUS reboot) is still shown. I removed the /etc/ocfs.conf file and still it is being shown in the ocfstool. I tried to ignore this and continued creating the OCFS partition from the other node (TI card node) using the mkfs.ocfs command. That too ran fine without any error messages and was able to mount it under /u02/oradata/orcl. When I try to mount the partition from VIA card node it is giving me the following error
    # mount -t ocfs /dev/sdb1 /u02/oradata/orcl
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, or too many mounted file systems
I get the following in /var/log/messages
    Jun 29 21:16:40 testrac1 kernel: SCSI disk error : host 2 channel 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 8000000
Jun 29 21:16:40 testrac1 kernel: Current sd08:11: sense key None
    Jun 29 21:16:40 testrac1 kernel: I/O error: dev 08:11, sector 69
I tried googling with the above error message and they seem to point hands towards VIA chipsets. But I am not sure. Please guide us on what needs to be done to resolve this issue if you have faced it before.
    Thanks in Advance
    Jei

  • Why is my Epson Stylis Photo R300 not reconized?

I installed Leopard on my iMac 17" 1 gh machine. Epson drivers are listed to this printer. However, when I go to ADD printer all I get is a Firewire option, NOT the USB option.
I did find a USB plugin in a library folder, but don't know where that should be moved to for it to show up as a selection....
    Anyone with some help??
    TIA
    Bob

Problem resolved by a mystery reboot. (this hadn't worked before, but this time everything is ok). Go figure!!

  • Unexpected various shutdowns of my macbook, I do not have any clue...

    Hi guys,
I already read through the forum, but I wasn't quite sure if my problem was solved.
The thing is that my macbook often shuts down without any clear reason. It often happened while I watched a movie or a youtube video. But even when I worked with keynote it just rebooted. I didnt had any other programs running in the background.
Once it happened that a window popped open and said that I have to restart my macbook.
It also happened that it just borke down. I made a photo:
    http://img402.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img3670sd1.jpg
And then there are those mysterious reboots without any warning message or anything else. It just reboots for now particular reason.
Anyway, a friend of my is an IT student and we tried to watch the temperature of the CPUs. After I opened itunes visualizer or a youtube video the temperature was about 70 - 75° celsius. At this time I had safari open with about 4 tabs and mail, neo-office(no file opened! just idle!) calendar.
We didn't want to go further. We do not know what it is exactly, graphic card, mainboard? But I ned a solution... thank you!
I bought my macbook in october, pretty at the end of it. Got it in novemer. Those strange things happened sometimes but I could not work at the university without a computer which is the reason I reacted so late.
MB 2.2. ghz + 1 gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram with the new graphic chip they built in in the end of octobre.
    thanks again.
    Benny
P.S.: postet it in bluetooth, ram etc. as well for a mistake, i hope that there are more people here in this forum who can help me. I apologize therefore for doubleposting.

I just remembered that I had the same problem with my old desktop PC (windows) and my CPU fan. After I startet a game / movie the PC lagged enormously or even rebooted.
I called AppleCare telling them my problem and my experience with that but they said I am not in the free telephone support (90 days) anymore. They wanted to make me pay 50 € for the support or by the AppleCare program for 319 €, because they said "they can not be sure whether the problem is not a software issue."
I decided to bring my macbook to a service provider near my town, hoping the can fix my problem...
I have to say I am diappointed about the support strategy apple has.
I have my fan now on 2500 rpm and readjusted NVRAM and PRAM.
If you have any more ideas, please tell me. I would appreaciate your suggestions.

  • Mini noise

I've had my Mini (Late 2012, 2.3, i7, fusion drive) a couple of weeks now and I love it.
One thing, though. I hear a slight buzz from the Mini when I, for example, move to a website in Safari, or scroll down my inbox in Mail.
I know sounds are hard to describe, but a low-volume short buzz is how it seems to me. It's not loud, but it's there. I'm assuming it's some kind of disc noise. I'm moving on from an old iMac, and I don't recall any particular disc noises from that.
You know how it is when you have a new machine and you're hyper-sensitive. So, is it normal?

Rule of thumb: Any time an otherwise inexplicable event occurs with a computer, like a mysterious sound, all o fus immediately become hyper-aware and symptoms/sounds we would otherwise never notice start to sound like a rock concert at full volume. That does not necessarily mean there isn't a problem, but it may help put it in perspective.
At this point, I presume you want to prove/disporve that there is a serious problem in your Mac mini -- correct? That means it is essential to isolate the source of the noise and that means you are going to have to do some serious troubleshooting. The noise you have described could be several things including a cooling fan brushing against its housing, a rough bearing causing a vibration perfhaps at a given rpm, an HDD problem as yet unidentified, etc. Identifying this kind of problem, if indeed it is a problem, is a tedious step-by step process. It is important that you only do one thing at a time or you risk never identifying the issue.
The process starts by reviewing what you do and do not know.
You do NOT know whether or not the sound is indicative of a real problem.
You have no indication of data loss, the Mac mini is not mysteriously rebooting, no clicks or pops followed by a flash on the monitor, no blue screen of death, etc.
You DO know that you do not hear the sound when booted in the safe mode. That would tend to indicate the problem is related to software, but NOT the system software. Booting in safe mode...
loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in System/Library/Extensions).
disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts
It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501.
disables all startup items and any Login Items.
You do NOT know if the sound is related to the Fusion drive, but that is your fear. There is a way of pretty well clearing the HDD as a source of the problem but it requires a third party testing utility that costs about $100. The best indicator of impending HDD failure is to perform a surface scan of the the entire drive. There are three utilities that will do this: Micromat's TechTool Pro or Checkmate (Checkmate is purely a test utility and performs no repairs, TechTool Pro is a volume repair utility as well, but AFAIK the repair functions have not yet been validated on a Fusion drive) or Prosoft Engineering's Drive Genius (in addition to doing a surface scan, DG also has a HD "stress test" that will wring out a drives mechanical functions pretty well).
Assuming the noise is somehow software related the testing is free but time consuming.
Narrow the scope of your search by determining if the problem is something in your user account or is at the system level. You do this by creating a Test account (If you d not have one
go to System Preferences > Users & Groups, click on the padlock at the bottom of the window and enter your administrative password,
then click on the Plus sign to create the test account).
Boot into that account and see if the sound is heard. If it is then the problem is in the System area, if not it is something in your user account.
If it is in your user account,
    Repeat the System Preferences steps
Select you user account and click on the Login items bar
    One at a time,
    Delete a login item
    Quit System Preferences
    Reboot your system
    listen for the noise.
If the noise is heard go back to system preferences, reinstall the deleted login item, and go back to step 2.3.1.
If the noise is NOT heard you have identified a potential souuce of the problem. Be sure the item is still needed and if not delete it, If it is still needed check with the vendor to see if there is later version.
If it is in the System area:
In the Library folder at the root of your HDD find the LaunchDaemons folder and one at a time
Drag the LaunchDaemon to the desktop
Reboot and listen for the sound
If you still hear it, replace the LaunchDaemon in hte LaunchDaemons folder and go back  to step 3.1.1.
If the noise is NOT heard you have identified a potential souuce of the problem. Be sure the item is still needed and if not delete it, If it is still needed check with the vendor to see if there is later version.
Repeat this process in the StartupItems folder
If you still have not found a source of the problem try instrumenting your system as I suggested in a previous post and watching fan speeds when the sound occurs.

  • Beginner Help Needed

Hi all, I have been reading this board since I decided to get the Droid X and have learned a lot.  Thank you.  I got my phone brand new 8 days ago.  I have had a few issues that I have noticed are fairly common but I thought I would post as much detail as I could to see if I have a setting or something that is causing these problems before I try to exchange the phone for another X.  I don't want to wait too long for warranty sake.
    1. The day I brought my phone home, I didn't know how to wake it up so I hit the power button on the top and accidentally powered it off.  For the next hour it kept powering itself on and off until I took the battery out and back in.  It was fine then so I put it on the charger to get a full charge before bed.  I took it to bed and over 6-7 hrs it completely drained the battery and turned itself off.  I put it on the charger and waited a little bit to boot it up.  When I did it rebooted itself repeatedly, even dropping a two calls that came in when it was on.  Pulled the battery again and it was fine.  Went about 7 days with no mysterious reboots. I went to the hospital so I powered it down (using the top button) and when I turned it on it started it's rebooting cycle again until I pulled the battery. It seems I can not turn it off without having to pull the battery afterwards.
    2. Battery life, I know that because this phone is so awesome, the battery is not going to last forever.  That being said, a full charge on my phone lasts between 6-7 hours everytime.  Right now my phone is at 40% after 3 hrs and 25 min.  I have used it very little this morning.  My husband got a CPO Droid X a couple of days after I got my new one and his battery is amazing.  Right now it has been off the charger for 15 hrs and 19 min and still has a 60% charge left!  Since his is doing so well, last night I tried to go through all of our settings and mimic his, thinking that I have something that is a huge power drain.  We were basically the same already so I made a few small changes and it made no difference in battery life.  The only differences right now in our phones that I can find are a few aps.  He has 5 or six games and Facebook.  I only have Facebook.
Here is something strange I notice while looking through our phones side by side.
Our usage statistics in the battery manager are way different.
Mine (bad battery)                                 His (excellent battery/no odd reboots)
    Android OS    88%                                Display                33%
    Display             5%                                Android System 23%
Phone Idle       2%                                Voice Calls         21%
Android System 2%                             Phone Idle          11%
    Swype               2%                               Cell Standby        9%
    Cell Standby    2%
I have tried WiFi on/Wifi off and it makes no difference, I never have GPS on, I tried manually killing the aps, I've tried leaving them running.  So I don't know.  My gut tells me that there is some strange glitch that makes it reboot and causes the Android OS to run way to much, but I really don't know much about this phone and want to be armed if I have to go argue for a new phone.  I got this phone because my BB Storm's screen quit working after an update.  The techs loaded my contracts from backup assistant to my new phone, but I knew that I hadn't run that in a long time and I was missing  a ton of recent contacts.   I went back later with my Storm to see if they could transfer just the missing ones or delete the contacts in my X and pull all the old ones off the Storm.  By the time they were done, I had three of every contact on my phone, we did a factory reset and loaded the again and when I got home, I had two of all of them again, what a pain! So anyway, I am not that confident in my local store.  Plus, I have this one set up the way I like it and am not really looking forward to starting over.  So if anyone has any suggestions or needs more info to help please let me know OR feel free to say that I need a new one if that's the case, I don't want to wait too long on that.  I just need a little more battery than 6 hrs out of the box!
Jessica, and you are a saint if you read all this!

From what I am getting from your description:
    1. You are probally using a task killer (Make sure to exclude system apps and Set apps to only be killed when the backlight is powered off)
Note:  Others may consider task killers are not needed but the work well for me...
    2. Lower Backlight
    3. Disable Wifi, GPS and bluetooth when not in use.
    4. Select Performance option under Settings/ Battery Manager / Battery Mode
You can usually improve battery life if you start with these rules..
If all falls a Hard Reset my help...
This has been verified as being the best way to stop a number of the issues that has developed after doing Froyo update, the system seem to keep the app and settings during installation process and this seems to cause a number of incompatible issues with a number of devices....
Follow these settings during restore to avoid issues being restored automatically.
    1. Uncheck "Back up my data" under Settings/Privacy
    2. Click Factory Data Reset/Reset Phone
    3. After reset is complete only Active Phone but do not input Google Email information
    4. Once phone is at homepage go back into Settings/Privacy and make sure the Automatic Restore option is unchecked, even if grayed out, activate "Back up my data" and quickly disable "Automatic Restore"
    5. After being sure that the Automatic Restore option is off it will be safe to log into Google and you can continue installing preferred apps and custom settings.
This process will stop all applications and settings from restoring automatically and restoring original issues that usually resolve a number of issues.

  • Unexpected shutdowns of my macbook

    Hi guys,
I already read through the forum, but I wasn't quite sure if my problem was solved.
    Benny
Edit: I somehow put it in the wrong category? I apologize... new here...

I had the same exact problem. I bought my MacBook in July of last year. As of October, it would randomly reboot. I could never reproduce it on spot. It could do it 10 times in an hour, or once a week. I originally thought it had something to do with the RAM, so I replaced it, but it fixed nothing. Recently, it got so bad it became unusable. Mine's still in repair, and I'm pretty livid. Several techs at the Genius bar told me the mainboard had to be replaced, but it was probably some sort of sensor that went bad. I was pretty furious that I couldn't just get a new machine, since it was still under factory warranty. I don't know if I'm wrong in thinking that it's normal to get a replacement if something breaks within the initial warranty period, but it's what I expect. I used to sell computers and that's what our policy was. Had it been out of the factory warranty, but covered by Applecare, then I can understand having repair being the only option. I'm in the same situation, I need a computer, so...yeah...if I don't get my Macbook back from repair soon I'll be replacing it.

  • Remote PSU for MEGA 180

I'm proposing this as just an idea and if anyone out there is skilled with electronics it is something to consider.  In fact, I may do it myself.
OK, down to business.  What's the single biggest component in any Mico PC?  The power supply unit (PSU).  In addition, the PSU throws off alot of heat (most is vented out the back but infra-red is radiated throught the case) and is generally noisy (fans).  Lastly, PSUs in micro pc's are usually underpowered.  Myself, I usually put in a minimum of a 350 watt PSU when I build a PC (preferably 450W).  PSUs are often ignored but believe me, a high quality PSU is critical to making a dependable PC.  In fact, may PC's I've repaired that were suffering from mysterious reboots were because of low quality PSUs giving off 'dirty' power.
So here's what I'm thinking.  Take the PSU out of the MEGA 180 (or any micro PC), buy a high quality, high powered PSU, and mount it remotely.  All you will need to do is splice in wire b/w the PSU and the plug ends (solder and use heat shrink tubing).  Then, use a wire loom to make all the power leads into one nice cable.  You could place the PSU in an out of the way area.  I'm thinking a lenght of about 3 feet would be great.
So what will you do with all the extra space you've created in your MEGA 180???  How about a nice big heatsink on the CPU???  Or, what about a second hard drive mounted where the PSU was?  The options are endless.
I've used a PC power supply to make a regulated 12 volt power source.  To see how, check out my website at http://www.e-maxximumrc.com/html/power_supply.html

As far as I can make out, the MSI PSU does have some 'special' outputs as the Radio and CD can be powered when the Power Supply is 'Off'.
You would just need to make a 1 to 1 cable to get the power to the Chassis and the original connectors if you were just remote mounting the MSI supply.  If you did want to buy a new PSU then you would need to measure what voltages you get where with the MSI PSU 'Off' and also check that the ATX connector (and the others) are standard as I would imagine this is a Custom PSU for MSI and there is a danger that things may not be as they appear.  For instance, I know that Dell have standard looking ATX PSU's but when you actually check the pinout, they are different and connect a normal PSU to a Dell system and it becomes very 'interesting' - mostly a lot of electrons escape in the form of smoke!!
