Super Drive rejects all CDs

Starting today my iMac G4 has stopped accepting CDs. It could have started with the 10.4.2 update but I can't be certain. The drive reads/writes like normal using DVDs, but nothing with a CD. The drive will spin up, stop, spin, stop, spit CD.
Any ideas on fixing this problem. It shouldn't be a drive issue, I wouldn't think. More of a software fix. Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

problem fixed!

  • Macbook pro rejects all cds

My macbook pro rejects all cds, but will accept dvds. What can I do? I have system 10.6.8. Thank you.

    Tried another maker?
By all cd's do you mean music cds, data cds too?

  • Super drive rejects CDs/DVDs

The Super drive on my mac is not accepting any CDs or DVDs.  It ejects the CD/DVD after about 15 seconds.  I have hardly used the CD drive (infact used it only once about 3-4 months back).  My MBP is 13" mid-2012 running OS X 10.8.4.  Appreciate any help to solve this problem.

The Apple warranty is international, so you should be able to take your machine to any local Apple Store or AASP and have them fix the SuperDrive.
Since I suspect a mechanical problem with the SuperDrive, I wouldn't worry about a fresh installation of OS X. As to the question of backing up your data - you should always keep a couple of backup schemes in place. See ds store's Most commonly used backup methods. I keep two Time Machine backups and (most recently) four clones to backup my data.

  • CD Drive ejecting ALL CDs and DVDs.

    Hi everyone,
As usual I am writing this on behalf of my friend that just got a White 1.83 week 29 MacBook. He was using it all day today, importing CD's into iTunes. The CD drive will no longer accept any CDs. When you put them in, it pulls them in by itself, starts to read them, and then spits them right back out. He has tried numerous different CDs and DVDs to no avail. They all get spit out. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

From personal experience and reading through the forums...most people seem to be having this problem with the superdrives not the combo drives. This makes your case a little more unique...but probably still the same issue.
It seems that the manufacturer of the combo and superdrives made some low quality devices. There are literally hundreds of postings in this discussion group about this problem.
I Had my macbook for all of 24 hours when the superdrive started doing this same thing. Apple was quick with the repair though. I sent it in Friday and I am getting it back today. i will let you know if it is fixed when I get home tonight. It seems that a lot of people in these forums have sent their macbooks in more than once for their superdrives.
For $1400.00...you'd think that you'd have a reliable system, you know?

  • Disk Drive Rejects all Disks

I started to make a DVD from a short video I've made but my drive just, immediately, rejected it. I tried another one and the same thing. I then tried a blank CD, rejected, a music CD and then a fulm DVD. All where rejected. I've closed everything down, switched off over neght and the same thing the next day.
    Has anyone any ideas please.

    Thanks for your reply Michael.
I did try option-command-p-r but I could not get it to change anything. Then, I thought I would check the warranty.
I am a lucky person, it is still under extended warranty until 18th of this month. So I have booked it in to our local Apple shop, next Tuesday.
    I will post the outcome.
    Thanks again.

  • What's the Manufacturer of the Super-drives for all three Unibodies 13-17"?

    FOR: 13, 15, and 17"
    Just wondering, thanks!

cause my MBP15 unibody sounds a lot noisier than my MBP17 unibody.

  • Will not down load some music cd onto macbook air using super drive

I can not down load some music from my cds onto macbook air via super drive. These cds can be down loaded onto other computers but they are rejected by my computer.

I'm sorry to hear that .  I was lucky that mine was under warranty.  It was a bad drive and the replacement drive that was sent by HP works perfectly.  My experience with HP support was very good.  It took a bit of time to work through all the questions, but once we determined that it was bad, they promptly sent a new one out.
Since Geek squad gave you bad information, i.e., the DVD/CD drive really was bad, can you speak to them?  They may be able to help with a good drive in the interest of good customer service.   The only other option that I can think of that  might work is to try to find an inexpensive used drive from one of the local computer shops in your area or on the net.

  • Super Drive, upgrade to 10.4, memory, software?

    I have a 700MHz eMac running 10.3.9.
I know if I want to upgrade to 10.4 I have to max my memory and install a Super drive then try to find the 10.4 disks for sale.
My question is, will I need some new software to run, recognize or whatever is need ed the newly installed Super drive?
But then, maybe trying to upgrade this soon-to-be 8 years old computer is a waste of money?

You don't necessarily need a super drive. You just need a disc drive that will read CDs & DVDs. A combo drive will read CDs & DVDs + burn CDs. A super drive will read CDs & DVDs + burn CDs & DVDs.
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521 http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

  • Super drive won't recognize audio CDs but will burn

Anything I can do about this?
When Audio CDs are inserted I will hear the drive attempting to load through several cycles then spit it out. Tried multiple CDs and CDs do work in CD player. ALL are original audio CDs not copies, cloned or burned. ALL are clean.
BLANK CDs will seat and allow me to burn through iTunes.
ALL DVDs load and play fine.
I feel like this suddenly happened but can't remember the last time I inserted an audio CD. I completely reformated (clean install) my HD last Thanksgiving, updated all drivers and programs I could find. (not sure about firmware for super drive but I think I found it was the lastest) I swear the CD ROM worked.
Got a new iPod at Christmas and it works fine. Itunes works fine!
Original Mac Mini and updated SuperDrive..... Info here:
I replaced original CD ROM drive with Super Drive about 4 years ago. There has never been a hardware issue. Clean install fixed random CD burn problem.
    Super Drive:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06:
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06
    Revision: 1.01
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 1
    Socket Type: Internal
    Machine Name: Mac mini
    Machine Model: PowerMac10,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.42 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz

    Ditto for like 2 years.
I have the exact! same problem. A lot of people confuse similar drive problems with ours when diagnosing.
Here's what I have found out, although after 2 years, I haven't been able to completely fix it.
Something related to my login is corrupt or missing. If I log in under my wife's login, and insert the audio cd, everything is perfect. Then if I switch back to my login, everything is perfect for again. However every cd must still be inserted under her login.
I really with this additional post will help somebody who has had this actually answer. It isn't a drive problem, or itunes problem.... and clearly a complete re install of osx isn't necessary.

  • USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs.

I bought a new USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs. I am in region 1 and my DVDs are all region 1. This is the second drive so the problem seems to be in the computer. The problem is the same with battery power or AC adaptor. I  downloaded Adobe flash before I bought the USD super drive. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.

    MBP refers to Macbook Pro
Do the DVD spit out right away? (indicates a bad loader mech)
OR do the DVD spit out after several seconds (indicates a dirty laser diode lens) ?

  • I am no longer able to play a cd on my MBA using my Macbook's super drive... all the settings are correct, I think, as I used to be able to do this without a problem.. any suggestions?

How do I play a cd on my MBA using the super drive on my old Macbook? The Macbook is set to share cds and dvds, but when I go to the remote disc on my MBA and click on my Macbook, I get this message: the operation can't be completed because the original item for "Audio CD" can't be found"

You can't play copywrited protected content over Remote disc.  It's blocked.

  • My cd/dvd drive keeps rejecting all cd/dvd.

my cd/dvd drive keeps rejecting all cd/dvd.  it accepts it for about 5 seconds and then spits it out.  does anyone have any suggestions?

Silly question, have you tried a lens cleaner?

  • How can I add A second Apple Super Drive to my Mac?

My Imac won't see the second super drive fitted. Can this be done?

Is it check in the box that says CDs, DVDs, iPhods? If the box is checked and it still can't be seen do a SMC reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Super drive not reading dvd r

Help! Super drive isn't reading a dvd+r anymore. I've had my macbook pro for about 4months. Dvd+r is clean and has worked before. Note: All other Dvd and Cd's are being read just fine.

The media may be quite different from one manufacturer to another. Verbatim ha been found to have less errors and be more durable. Apple itself uses Verbatim (the CDs and DVDs suppplied with Macs are Verbatim). Having said that, you have your own milleage.
All the Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHz, Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3GHz & Power Mac G5
Quad 2.5GHz can indeed burn to DVD+R DL as described in:
    http://www.apple.com/powermac/specs.html
Optical drive 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW). 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW); writes DVD-R discs at up to 16x speed, writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 6x speed, reads DVDs at up to 16x speed, writes CD-R and CD-RW discs at up to 24x speed, reads CDs at up to 32x speed
But my question is can you burn brand new DVD-R DL (double layer) --not just DVD+R DL-- with such superdrive in the PowerMac G5?

  • Is there a printable DVD label that will not cause my Super Drive to crash?

CD Stomper and Avery paper labels cause the Super Drive to: reject the CD/DVD disk; report that the disk is damaged/unreadable; or just grind to a halt. Replaced the iMac internal Super Drive - still has same problem. Disks were prepared using the Super Drive and play without problems until I put a label on and try to play it in the same Super Drive. Labeled disks work fine in LG and Panasonic DVD players connected to TVs.

Many thanks. Used an external LG super multi drive burner to put labels on DVDs using Lightscribe, but the contrast and label limitations (black-gray) are less than ideal. Noticed that Avery sells CD/DVD label packages with paper labels for about 40 CDs and 2 "film" labels for DVDs. Web site doesn't appear to have packages of just DVD "film" labels. Has anyone had success with "film" labels for DVDs?
