SUPERBUG? Transitions / Unbalanced Between Clips & Unsync Audio HELP! 2006

I have been able to reproduce this SUPERBUG every time.
I have split the audio track from the video clips to solve the bugs in iMovie that many have listed here in the forums. Also, it was a live music performance that I added other clips in the middle to compensate for shakey camera and bad shots.
All was fine till I started adding a 'simple' "Cross Dissolve" transition.
Both clips in the transition would not be evenly balanced in the cross dissolve, and would un-sync the audio if it was locked in place or not.
If you center the play head in the middle of the croos dissolve and delete it, you can see how much it is off from where the clips join.
This is the WORST case scenerio, since the only way to use transitions would be to place them, and the re align the live video with the audio clips, and then there is blank black clips EVERYWHERE!
My last problem was the new Slick 8 Plug-In Stabilizer which still doesn't work in iMovie 6 ( Gee Three says it's on the way ) ... and now this?
Who is programming at Apple these days?
They better get some real talent there quick .. I'm furious.
Has anyone else figure this out .. or is there some trick I don't get?
Help

"..Both clips in the transition would not be evenly balanced in the cross dissolve, and would un-sync the audio if it was locked in place or not.."
Applying any transition in iMovie (..except 'Overlap'..) will "un-sync the audio", because any transition lays the tail of the first clip OVER the head of the following clip to merge them both, one into the other. This shortens the overall running time of the two clips - and anything else which follows - by the total duration of the transition.
It's always best to practise with a few clips, or another "test" project, first ..just to see what the effects will be before starting a major project, and then you can test the effect of adding a transition. Same with doing a bit of woodwork, or stain removal: it's always best to do a test first, and see what the result is ..then you know how to apply that to the 'real thing'.
All that you have to do is to allow some extra length to the tail of the first clip, and to the head of the following clip, to match the duration of the transition you want to use. This is easy to do if you're dropping in a "cutaway" shot to replace some shaky footage, for example.
So if you want to use a one second Cross Dissolve, say, (..that's 30 frames in NTSC American video, or 25 frames in European PAL video..) then leave an extra 30 frames (..25 frames for PAL..) at the end of the first clip, and an extra 30 (.. or 25..) frames at the head of the next clip, for this second to be "eaten away" by the transition. Your underlying music will then still be in sync after the transition has been applied.
"..Who is programming at Apple these days?.." ..This is the way that iMovie has worked since Version 1. It isn't a "bug", but simply the way that editing works in this easy-to-use "consumer" (..i.e; amateur..) editing program.
"..the clips that where split EXACTLY at the playhead ( and audio extracted from the video ) return as one frame away from each other.." ..If you do a few tests, you'll see what happens to the frame count where clips are split and re-joined. I've an NTSC project here (..I'm in the UK and usually work in PAL..) which is a single clip with a total running time of 27:10. If I split the single clip at 02:00 ..i.e; exactly 2 seconds.. and the second clip lasts 25:10, then when I recombine them the total running time becomes, once again, 27:10. If I split them at 01:29, then the second clip becomes 25:11 long, and if I delete the split, they revert to a single clip of 27:10 ..i.e; no frames lost.
However, American (NTSC) video is slightly odd in that its real frame rate is 29.97 frames per second, so every minute or two a couple of "imaginary" frames are lost - not really lost, but the frame count simply jumps - to try to "round things up" to 30 frames per second again. This is called "drop frame time code". No frames are actually dropped ..the numbers are just "rounded up" now and again.
So if your frame count seems slightly off ..don't worry about it.
This is the way that video editing works.
In the "professional" editing programs (Final Cut Express and Pro), the program tries to find extra frames on the ends, or beginnings, of clips, so that those excess frames can be "eaten up" by transitions, and total clip length remains the same. But that relies upon more footage being available than you're actually working with ..so someone new to those programs might ask "Why do I have to import more footage than I need?"
Just practise with it a bit, and you'll soon see that it works OK ..just leave extra frames on the ends of clips to allow for the footage which gets used up in the Cross Dissolves, or whichever transitions you use.

  • 1Frame Transitions in between Clips.

Concerning smoothcam, I'm following the instructions on applying smoothcam filters to clips.
I'd first export the portion of the clip that is being used, then reimporting it and placing in the timeline where it belongs.
When I place the new clip on the track, flushed up to another clip on either side, I can't seem to get a cross dissolve transition that spans the intersection of the 2 clips. FCP wil place a 1frame transition in between the clips but not on and connecting the clips.
    What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any and all help
    Aloha

    You don't have enough handles.
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Effects1.html
You needed to export with pad on either side so when you brought it back you had room for the transition overlap.

  • Is it possible to increase transition time between clips in iMovie '09?

I've edited a movie and to stop it jumping so much I want to increase the time between clips so that it fades to black between clips. Is this possible?

There is a "fade to black" transition  in iMovie 09. Does that work for you?

  • Transition Issue between tracks

Hello all, I'm sorry if this has been addressed elswhere, but I couldn't find this specific issue.
I've noticed in my exported videos (.mts to H264 .mp4) that I experience some artifacting on the right side of the screen when transitions such as a cross-dissolve or dip to black are applied. A thin column of a solid color (red, blue, violet) will appear on the right side of the screen for the duration of the transition. Interestingly, if the transition is between clips on the same track, there is no artifact, but if the transition is taking place between clips on two separate tracks, the colored lined appears. All the clips were shot with the same camera and imported at the same settings.
Is this a bug or is there I something I should be doing differently?
Much thanks for any help or advice.

Mine is green. This is DV pal on the timeline also visible in export mpeg2-dvd during a dip to black.
Does not do it on a single track, there must be more tracks involved.

  • Transition of Audio Between Clips

I made an iMovie from several video clips and used the circle opening transition between the clips.
Although the video looks good, the audio part of the transition did not work out well. [The audio is the audio that is imbedded into each clip.] The audio for each clip in the iMovie begins (abruptly) after the transition. There is no smooth transition of audio from one clip to the next.
Is there a way to have the audio of the first clip smoothly change into the audio of the second clip during the period of the video transition?
Is there a way to have the audio of the second clip begin at the start of the transition rather than at the end of the transition?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi
You should extract the audio from the clip (cmd+j i think). the audio will be placed on a new track. Make sure you have clip volume enabled and you will see a line through the clip. Palce nodes and drag them up or down - this represents volume and you can cross-fade betwteen audio clips for a smoother transition.
You can also grab these audio clips and place them where you want.
    Hope this helps

  • Transition between clips

    Hi again,
I'm having trouble putting the "doors" transition between my clips - have zoomed in and there is no smaller clips in between. If I have not allowed for the extra frames (or handles) after trimming clips, is there any way to remedy this?
    Thanks.
P.S. I can actually put the transition in, but other frames I don't want show up even though I have trimmed everything off and deleted and closed gap between clips!

Snap is a function available (toggle with the S key) in the Timeline, where when a Clip, or a Transition, is near to the beginning, or end, of a Clip, the object being dragged will "jump" to those junctures. This makes dragging and dropping Clips, for instance, onto the Timeline, so that they are adjacent to previous, or following Clips. I leave it on most of the time, as it speeds up dragging, and dropping. It will also function, if, one is click-dragging the Tail of one Clip, and they want it to expand only to the Head of the next Clip.
Now, remember, Snap sees the entire Timeline - all Video and Audio Tracks. If one has Clips on those, even if they are scrolled out of view, Snap will function on them, as well. This can get a bit confusing, when many Tacks are populated, especially if they ARE scrolled out of view.
Snap gets in the way of trying to do things like repair OOS (Out Of Sync) issues. As one slide the Audio Clip, it will want to jump to the beginning, or end of another Clip. That is usually NOT what the editor wants. There, I turn it OFF, so I can effortlessly slide my Audio exactly the number of frames that I want, without having to "fight" Snap. Again, I turn it back on, when I go back to general editing.
There is one instance, where it can cause issues. Do not know if this has been changed, as of PrE7. It is especially common, if one is zoomed out on the horizontal view of the Timeline. Basically, if one is too forceful, when dragging and placing an Asset onto the Timeline and they "jam" this new Clip up to the Tail of another with too much "force," Snap will allow one to jump slightly past the Tail of the existing Clip by a Frame, or two. That alone would not be a big deal. What happens to those Frames, however, can be. They get sheared off and then are placed at the end of the last Clip on the Timeline. If one shortens the Duration of several Clips along the way, these one-two Frame "orphans" stay out at the end. One can end up with a desired Duration of say 00;10;39;00, but in reality the Timeline might be 00;11;00;00. It is because of the orphans way out past where the editor "thought" the Timeline should end, and they are often out of sight, unless one hits the \ [backslash] key, to zoom out to the full view of the Timeline. Then, the orphans will be seen. One of the last things that I always do, before Export is hit \, to see my entire Timeline. This checks for orphans, and also any Clips that I forgot.
If Snap is OFF, what happens when you have a Clip on the Timeline and drag another "over" it, is the first Clip is "rolled up," i.e. its Out Point is moved in, from where it was set. Now, there are no orphans, but one has shortened the first Clip, and that is usually NOT what they want to do. Careful, non-forceful use of Snap will allow one to butt the dragged Clip right up to the previous one - just do not JAM it in there. Be gentle, like you were working with original film and not digital media.
    Hope that this helps,

  • How to apply transitions between clips in the same track?

    Hey guys,
I'm in Uni on Final Cut Pro 5 and all the videos and discussions tell of how to apply transitions between clips in the same track.
I like to have my clips on different tracks so that I can overlap them at specific points but I don't know how to do this?
If I have track one. . .which ends. . .and have track 2 beginning below that (and have it overlapped for a few seconds) I don't know how to enable the transition at the point where track 2 begins.
    Can anyone help?

    Yep I understand that.
Let's say I overlap track 2 as I don't like the beginning of it. . .so I want the transition from the end of track one to track two to occur in the middle of track 2 - should I just trim the track to the point I want the transition to occur as opposed to have it overlapping?

  • FCE freezes when moving between clips!  Help?

Not with all transitions, but with some, sometimes even moving between clips from the same batch of film(!) FCE will stop playing through in the timeline, sound will jerk to a halt, and I'll then see what I call the "Colorful wheel of death" as FCE tries to deal with it and stops responding, making me Force Quit, which is a Jedi ability I now have much use in, btw... I have tried to Trash Prefs but still no good, and as I am fairly new to this software, with less than a year's experience, I need help!
I have three major projects to do before year's end!
    What do I do?

First be sure you've correctly trashed your preferences. Follow the advice here: http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc1.html
Be sure everything is rendered before you playback. Be sure none of the windows (particularly Canvas) are overlapping.
Move your RT playback quality to low.
Sometimes it helps to reduce the opacity of an offending clip to 99% (via the motion tab in the viewer)before playing your sequence in the timeline. I can't explain why this works but its saved me alot.

how can i make a transition between clips on cutaway?

    ninafromlisboa wrote:
But if I want ONLY fade out (or in) I can't do it...
OK, I understand what you mean now! I assumed you were asking about the normal Fade In or Fade Out using the transition from the Transitions panel. But I guess you mean the Fade function specific to a Cutaway. When you double-click on a Cutaway the Inspector opens. Here you can set the Cutaway Fade duration. But as you say, it only provides for both fade in and fade out as one operation - you can't set the fades individually (it's both or nothing).
BUT, try the method outlined by Karsten Schluter above. It will give you the same effect and will enable you to fade either side of the Cutaway (or add other transitions).

  • In the middle of a clip, the audio starts playing from another part.... Help?

So, I'm a bit of a technological noob, so I will describe this the best I can.  I have a clip (mp4) that runs about 1 hour 30 min long.  About 30 minutes into the clip, the audio from the beginning of the clip randomly starts playing, yet the video continues as it should, just the audio randomly swapped itself somehow?
I have not cut or edited the clip in any way, I simply imported it in, and put it on the timeline and no matter what I tried (restarting, clearing cache, reimporting, etc) nothing seems to fix the problem.  The weirder part is, if I watch the raw file using something like Windows Media Player, the clip is just fine, no problems at all.  So something must be going wrong when it's imported into Adobe Premiere.
Has anyone had this issue or know what may be causing this? I'm at a loss and it's keeping me from continuing a series I'm working on that I need to release.
As I said before, I'm a bit noobish, and this is my first time posting, so please feel free to respond with any additional info you need me to supply, and try to explain things in a noob friendly way, as I may not understand super technical jargon.
Edit: A little bit of info to help possibly... I'm using Windows 7 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS6

Hmmm okay.  I've been using PP for 2 years now with the same type of "non-camera media" and never had a problem til now.  But since then I've edited hours and hours of similar footage with no problem, so I may  just suck it up and use something like Windows Movie Maker to edit the one clip that is messing up.  Thanks for the help, and if anyone else has other suggestions, please feel free to post them

  • How do I make transitions between clips smooth?

how do I make transitions between clips smooth?  Right now, when I play my video in imovie, the clips freeze or jump between clips.

Have you tried sharing the final movie using the Share menu, or, alternatively use FILE/FINALIZE PROJECT?
The final product shouldn't have any lag. iMovie itself should not have any lag, but could depending on your Memory and hard disk configuration.

  • I can't add transitions between clips, but between generated media?!

I can't add transitions between clips, but between generated media?! Any ideas?

I am assumming you are working with "connected clips" which are either above or below the main storyline "track" (the one you put your first project clip onto when you started the project). You can only add transitions to clips that are on either the primary storyline or on a created storyline.  Select the clips you are working with then choose the Clip menu and the Create Storyline selection. Make sure snap is set to assure your clips are really butted up against each other.  Then apply the transitions.

  • Audio drops with the 2 gig file limit size between clips

Videoing with a Sony HXR-NX5U, the camera creates a 2 gig file size limit then importing the clips into Premiere Pro CS6. There is a few frames between clips where the audio drops and there is also s very slight drop in the video, this happens only between longer clips. I saw some reference to this in the forum a while back but no answer. Any indeas!!

Simple fix - copy entire contents of SD card to new folder on hard drive, all folder intact. Then in Premiere, import using "Media Browser" rather than "File > Import". With Media Browser, the spanned clips will be properly handled, importing as a single, long clip with no glitches.

    "Audio Clip problem plz help"
You have to learn to help yourself.
Have you done anything to try to fix the errors yourself?
    AudioClip clip; //Error Here
the error generated here is self-explanatory.
if you can't fix this, you should get a good book on java basics and start again.
the other error is also easy to fix.
