Surface Pro Windows 8.1 Will Not Shutdown

Hello All:
I'm having a problem with a Surface Pro that will not shutdown. It says it's shutting down, but it doesn't. I touch the screen after long periods of time after issuing a shutdown & it's waiting to log back in. Restart works as advertised.
Anyone got some tips to troubleshoot this? Thanks for any feedback.

I found it - "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" was turned on. This is a terrible (and not recommended by IT admins) setting to have turned on by default. Does MS even need to mess w/the shutdown buttons/process? First the Office Ribbon, then
the Start button, now this!
People are creatures of habit - keep things the same or @ least allow them to change it back to how they're used to!
Sorry for the rant, but YEESH already!

I just upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 and was advised to upgrade my printer driver for the Photosmart 3210 to a Windows 7 driver. After installing my printer will not duplex. On the printer preference page the box shows two sided duplexing (two sided).
Can you help, also when I had Vista installed the 2nd page printed upside down. I have tried to get the patch for this, but cannot find it.
You may need to enable the duplexer hardware as described in the Vista Duplex Printing Troubleshooting Guide.  There is also a link there to the patches for Vista back side upside down. When you have the duplexer enabled please post here about the results printing a duplex page.  If the back side is upside down the Vista patch can be applied.

I am sorry but Acrobat 7 is not at all compatible with Windows 8. For this, you will need to upgrade your Adobe Acrobat version.

  • My mac mini will not shutdown with either Mavericks or Yosemite (following a clean install)

First noted while running Mavericks, my Mac-Mini will not shutdown.  It just hangs on a black screen with the little icon.  I created a clean user account and the problem went away.  Rather than do a fresh install of Mavericks, I waited until Yosemite came out.  I reformatted the drive and did a fresh Yosemite install.  I then restored my apps and data only to find the problem is still present.  I've also tried stopping many of the applications I would normally expect might cause the problem with no luck.  And I tried the one Yosemite suggestion regarding deleting the Library/Caches folder content with no luck.
My naive question:  following the fresh install of Mavericks, should I have done a re-install of my (very many) applications instead of a restore from an image?
I've tried looking at the system logs after I've forced a shutdown with the power button but there's nothing I could find that shows any problems.
Any other suggestions of things to try would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    Thanks.
    It is running 10.5.8.
I am trying to boot up an external drive with 10.5.8 on it. It works on my Macbook Pro which is running 10.5.8, runs on my IMAC running SL. But doesnt work on the mac mini?
It had been running SL, however there are a number of programs I have like Windows Live Sync which are not yet compatable with SL so i downgraded to 10.5.6 which came with the Mac Mini then loaded all updates.
It seems to just go into an auto reboot as soon as i click on it.
i thought it might be the firmware? Is it possible to downgrade them and then re-install?
    I have reset the PRAM.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Installed XP but PC will not shutdown

I have a PC using an MS-6534 Motherboard that WAS running Windows 98SE with no problems.
For 'corporate' reasons the PC has been re-installed with XP Pro.
Ever since XP was put on it the PC will not shutdown. It gets to "Windows is shutting down" and then hangs ... stops functioning! Reset it and it starts fine. If I RESTART it then it works fine. I even took it back to 98 thinking I had a 'new' harfware problem, but it shuts down fine.
Can anyone give me some ideas of a) what is going on and b) how do I fix it?
    Thanks,

  • Hp officejet pro 8500 a910 software will not open

I have had my printer installed for over 2 years on my laptop via the network (Dell with OS Win 8.1).  Recently, as in I have no idea why or what happened, I have an issue where I cannot open the software on my computer to scan a document.
The icon on the desktop as well as under Programs > HP is "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910\Bin\HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910.exe" -Start UDCDevicePage
    with a Start In of "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910\Bin\"
I suspected that the link was broken and opened the link in Windows Explorer and it would not open from there either.  Also, the icon in Windows Explorer is nonspecific and does not look like an HP icon.
I tried uninstalling all HP software and reinstalling it, but am having the same issue.  I cannot open the software.
Anyone have any ideas?  Thank you!

    Hi @SandraDee1961,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that your HP Officejet pro 8500 a910 software will not open on Windows 8.1. I am sorry to hear this, but happy to help you with this issue!
I would recommend the following steps:
Uninstall the software. Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Clean boot the computer. How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Disable any antivirus programs. How to Disable Antivirus in Windows 8?
Disable any firewall programs. Windows Firewall from start to finish.
Create a new user account. Managing User Accounts and Logins (Windows 8).
Reinstall the software using the HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows.
    Hope this works!

Have you verified that your Windows 8.1 is a Pro or Enterprise edition? The Basic edition cannot join a domain.

Anyway Adobe state they are cross platform so this is pretty missleading !
MCR, you asked in your previous post:
"Is that true of all CS4 project files like Premiere Pro and After Effects?"
    I answered:
    "No."
Which means After Effects and Premiere project files are cross-platform. But Encore projects are not cross-platform.
    Is that clearer?
Regarding your last sentence, if you're referring to AE and PPro files, that is true. But it is not true of Encore project files.

  • Wake on Lan will not shutdown

    Hello everyone,
I hope I'm posting in the right forum as I think I am simply over looking something.
I have a dual boot system (win 7 and arch) and am trying to get Wake on Lan to work. I have installed ethtool and wol to find my card defaults to receive magic packets (g). I'm using an Asus Rampage IV Extreme mobo with the latest bios. Everything performs as it should with windows when shutting down or hibernating. My issue is when I suspend or shutdown arch it powers down completely and then reboots in a matter of seconds. If I force the card to wol unicast I can suspend the system (sometimes) but will still not shutdown without rebooting. I have used netctl to force the card to wol disabled and I can suspend it everytime. However, even setting wol to disabled, the computer will not shut down. I have disconnected the ethernet cord and even disabled the NIC in the bios but still the same results. If I shut down arch and pull the power when it initially shuts down it simply reboots as soon as power is connected again. The only way I have found to shut it down is to disable "wake on pcie" in the bios. This in turn also disables the windows Wake on Lan. If anybody has an idea of what a solution might be I am all ears (even if it calls for some trolling, I'm sure this deserves some :-)
    Thanks in advance

Recently, I have been testing several systems (Z77 and H97-based) after I disabled all references to 'xHCI' as it pertains to USB settings.  I also enabled wake on keyboard per one suggestion in one of the links above.  In about 15 power cycles, I haven't observed an unintentional wake-up with 'wake on PCIe' enabled in the BIOS.  More time is needed before I will claim either setting is the fix.

  • My mac will not shutdown or restart. Any help?

My mac will not shutdown or restart, it goes to a grey screen and just hangs there, I have left it overnight and when I have a look in the morning it is still hanging on the grey screen. Any help?

Zap the PRAM and reset the CMS
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
How to Reset Your Mac's SMC
The method for resetting your Mac's SMC depends on the type of Mac you have. All SMC reset instructions require shutting down your Mac first. If your Mac fails to shut down, try pressing and holding the power button until the Mac shuts down, which usually takes 10 seconds or so.
Mac portables with user-removable batteries (MacBook and most MacBook Pros):
    Shut down your Mac.
Disconnect your Mac portable from its MagSafe connector.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Re-install the battery.
    Reconnect the MagSafe connector.
    Turn your Mac on.
Mac portables with non-user-removable batteries (MacBook Air and some late 2009 MacBook Pro models):
    Shut down your Mac.
Connect the MagSafe power adapter to your Mac and to a power outlet.
On the built-in keyboard (this will not work from an external keyboard), simultaneously press and hold the left shift, control, and option keys while you press the power button. Release all keys at the same time.
Press the power button to start your Mac.
Mac desktops (Mac Pro, iMac, Mac mini):
    Shut down your Mac.
    Unplug your Mac's power cord.
Press and hold the Mac's power button for 15 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Reconnect your Mac's power cord.
    Wait five seconds.
Start your Mac by pressing the power button.
Alternative SMC reset for Mac Pro:If you have a Mac Pro that isn't responding to the normal SMC reset as described above, you can force a manual SMC reset by using the SMC reset button located on the Mac Pro's motherboard.
    Shut down your Mac.
    Unplug the Mac's power cord.
Open the Mac Pro's side access panel.
Just below the Drive 4 sled and adjacent to the top PCI-e slot is a small button labeled SMC. Press and hold this button for 10 seconds.
Close the Mac Pro's side door.
    Reconnect your Mac's power cord.
    Wait five seconds.
Start your Mac by pressing the power button.

my MAc Book PRO 13" Retina display will not update.  It crashes every time I try to do an update.  I have sent in the information on each update but so far nothing back from Apple.  Also it does not matter what I am trying to update, the operating system, and application, each caused the same crash.   This mac book is less than a month old.

That is the highest you will be able to go with 3g. You need 3gs or 4 to go any higher (multi processors and more memory needed).  Version 4.2.1 marks the end of your updates for that device.

    Hi there—
This reply doesn't seem to take into account the query.
    Please help?
The computer is completely unresponsive and won't shut down or turn off. It is stuck in Set Up Assistant after trying to sign in to AppleID.
Attempting to shut down or restart produces the following dialogue:
"The application Set Up Assistant has cancelled shut down.
To try shutting down again, quit Setup Assistant and click Try Again."
HOWEVER it is impossible to quick Set Up Assistant— the icon is completely unresponsive even to force quit, right click or anything.
I've managed to get into being able to see Dashboard and at the top Desktop and the dock below. But I can't click on anything from there. So it seems it is not the whole computer. Just set-up assistant.
    Please help??
    Thank you

HP Officejet Pro 8500   Cyan ink will not print. installed a new one, but no success

I had to replace both printheads about $85 a piece.  It may be more cost effective to buy a new printer.  Once I replaced the one printhead, the other one went out.  It is common and it did solve the issue.  I really like my printer and if it gets me another year or so, I think it was worth it.
