Suspend reverse telnet in Terminal

Hi All,
I'm unable to suspend a reverse telnet session (e.g. from an access server to a router) with Terminal.
The character sequence is: < ctrl-shift-6> < x >
This works perfectly from the Win XP command line but not from OSX (10.5.4) Terminal. When pressing "CTRL-SHIFT-6" I hear a beep an the key combination is not accepted. Tried will all the terminal types, as ANSI rather than VT-100, with no luck?
Anybody can help?
Thanks a lot,
Davide

  • Why the name Reverse Telnet ?

Forgive me for this simple ( and to some, stupid) question. Why is reaching the console ports of devices attached to a terminal server called Reverse Telnet. I am confused about the "Reverse" part.
    1. You reach "terminal server" by some suiteable means (telnet, ssh, console) from a device say your computer.
        c:\> telnet 10.10.10.1
        termsrv >
    2. You effectivily telnet to localhost (terminal server) on a specific port bound to certain TTY connection
        termsrv > R1                                  ! ip host R1 2001 <<loopback_address_termsrv>>
        R1>
Whats different for this second telnet is, instead of the telnet server (running on terminal server) presenting you with a second command shell it connects the mapped console port to the new telnet session. Effectively you read from or write to console port of R1.
R1 is oblivious about this whole operation. What's so "Reverse" about this second telnet session ?
    Thanks.

Ah, this is a good question.  Step into my time machine, and travel with me back to late eighties.  The 3Com 3C501 PC Ethernet card was released at the bargain basement price of $999 USD and the mighty Interl 386-DX33 was released to great fanfare.  Windows ran on top of DOS and all PC IP networking stacks were 3rd-party bolt-ons.  When you communicated with a computer, whether DEC, IBM or whomever you did it with a DUMB TERMINAL.  A terminal, for thos eof you who have never sern one,  was either a keyboard and a printer combo (like a Decwriter 100)  or a CRT text screen (Like a VT220, 80 columns by 24 lines) and a keyboard.  What you typed went out the serial port to a computer, and the computer sent text and screen drawing back commands through that same serial port.  That was the common human-computer interface of that era.
In the bad old days, the terminals were connected directly to the computers by serial interface cards and RS-232 cable.  As computers got faster, more and more terminals could be supported.  This started to get ridiculous as many serial lines emerged from these computers.  The bigger computers  looked like a mutant octopus.
Enter the TERMINAL SERVER, one of Cisco's early products. (The ASM)
The Cisco ASM terminal server took up to 96 terminals in an area and provided serial port connections for them.  It then multiplexed those terminals over Ethernet in order to reach an Ethernet connected computer (host).  The host computers were now freed from the sea of serial cables and could service dozens to hundreds of terminals thorough a single Ethernet port!   As a result, dozens to hundreds of slow, lightly used 9600 bps serial cables were replaced by a single 10 Mbit/sec connection.
The Cisco ASM software provided a telnet client to each serial port so that each terminal could connect to any telnet server (host) on the any network.  This allowed users to connect to multiple computers and relieved the load of computers providing telnet client services to directly attached terminals.  In this model, connections were initiated from a terminal on the port of the Cisco ASM to some distant computer.
Over time, Cisco noticed that there were computers and other devices (like the IBM 7171) that could not support Ethernet conenctions, but had dozens upon dozens of physical serial ports.  To make it so that network based telnet clients all over the Internet could access such an Ethernet-free computer, Cisco implemented a telnet SERVER function in the ASM.  Connections from a distant telnet client could now conenct through the ASM telnet server and reach these serial ports which had previously been limited to local terminals or expensive modem connections.  Since this activity was the exact reverse of the original use of the ASM, the function became known as "Reverse telnet."
In summary:  When a serially attached device CONSUMES service FROM the network, that is TELNET.  (The original design!)
When a serially attached device PROVIDES services TO the network, that is REVERSE TELNET. (The opposite of the original design.  But useful!)
Now, I will wait for people who have been in the industry longer than I have to go on about SNA, 3270s, paper tape and punch cards.

  • Setting up reverse telnet for 1900 witch access

Hey all - I set up a lab to mess around with at home. The switch is an ancient dinosaur, but still it gives me something to mess with.
Does the 1900 xswitch support a reverse telnet port? Anything I need to be aware of in configuring the line? I can telnet to the management port on the switch. I can attach a console cable and connect to the console port. I tried setting up a 2509 router with an Octal cable for access. It works for reverse telnet to my other Cisco routers, but I get "% Connection refused by remote host" when I try reverse telnet to the switch.
    Help!

Thanks for the info. I verified the line:
    Swi1900-A#sh line
    RS-232 configuration:
9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bits, None parity
    Autobaud: Enabled
    Modem dialin: Enabled
    Idle time-out: 0
    Modem Init String:
    Silent time: 0
    Password Threshold: 3
I know on the routers I needed to configure login. I don't see that option when configuring console on the 1900.
    1900 line options:
    Swi1900-A(config)#line cons
    Swi1900-A(config-line)#?
    Line configuration commands:
    autobaud Match remote baud-rate
databits Set number of data bits per character
exit Exit from line configuration mode
help Description of the interactive help system
modem Configure the modem control lines
no Negate a command or set its defaults
    parity Set terminal parity
password-thresh Configure the maximum password threshold
silent-time Configure the silent time on login intrusion
speed Set transmit and receive speeds
stopbits Set asynch line stop bits
time-out Configure the line idle time-out period
The switch is running pretty ancient IOS. Do you know off-hand if I would need to configure login on the console port, and if that option is available on more recent IOS? I'm running:

  • Reverse SSH ona terminal server

We are rolling out new terminal servers (2811s) and on the new terminal servers we want to configure reverse SSH.
On the old terminal servers we only had reverse telnet configured. And we would map the port to an IP using the ip alias command Eg ip alias 10.1.1.1 2067.
These would help out with management as we could then add this IP address to our DNS server and we wouldn't have to remember what port was needed when using out-of-band management when trying to console to a device.
With reverse SSH this isnt possible as the port needs to be specified when logging on to the router.
Has anyone successfully used reverse ssh with "ip alias"?
I could use the IP host command (ip host name port-num ip), but this would mean i would have to use a cisco device as a golden source.

    I like to use:
    alias exec 1 1.1.1.1 2001
    alias exec 2 1.1.1.1 2002
    alias exec 3 1.1.1.1 2003
    alias exec 4 1.1.1.1 2004
    alias exec 5 1.1.1.1 2005
    alias exec 6 1.1.1.1 2006
    alias exec 7 1.1.1.1 2007
    alias exec 8 1.1.1.1 2008

  • Reverse telnet to a specific line, based on AAA credentials

I want to setup a console server like a 2600 or something with a 16 or 32 port async module and allow users to access only certain ports/lines by reverse telnet based on login credentials.
For example, user joe can reverse telnet to ports 1 and 2, while user jane can reverse telnet to ports 3 and 4. User Jon can reverse telnet to ports 1 through to 6.
Is there a way to make this work? A document somewhere that outlines what's involved?
    Thanks in advance.

2600 Series is a Multiservice Platform so you can't convert like access server but you can enable the role based access.

I don't know what to type to enter in rommon mode. I tried every combinatios of characters but nothing. I used Putty, SecureCRT.
    Any idea?

So ESC isn't working during boot? FYI 9.2 is not supported on non-X ASA chassis (which I'm sure you have now figured out). You can also try changing the escape sequence so ESC will work. Check this link on how to change that.

Can I connect my Mac (Mac OS X) with other machine (Windows OS) on same LAN using telnet in terminal?
For example, telnet <ip address of other machine>
I m a networking student and I have learned to connect 2 machines on Red hat Linux OS on same Ethernet LAN which has same subnet mask. As Mac OS X is also a linux based OS I m trying to connect my Mac with my friends windows based machine using telnet <ip address of his machine>. However, I get a message "unable to connect to remote host".
Can anyone please tell me is this the problem because of different OS or it is something different!
Please reply...it will of great help..

The machine you're trying to connect to needs a Telnet server running on it - telnetd listening on port 23 (usually).
Incidentally, Mac OS X is not a Linux based OS, it is based on BSD Unix.

  • Telnet session terminating

    Hi,
When i login to the server which is using Solaris 9 using telnet, something is breaking telnet sessions in our machines. For workaround, we changed the IP address and it got resolved for now.
I want to revert back to the original statics IP. But i am suspecting that the same issue can occur again. Why the telnet sessions are breaking? Can anybody help me out on this issue?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the information.
Some users are able to telnet as a application user and some random users are not able to telnet and they are facing this issue.
Their telnet sessions are terminating without showing any error. If the problem is with firewall or any network equipment then it wont work for anybody, but the issue was it is not working for only some of the random users. Is there any possibility of issue with DNS?can anybody help me out on this?

  • Using reverse proxy and terminating ssl on them

    Hello
I am trying to set up IAS 9.03 on 2 machines one holding the infrastructure and one holding the midtier.
We want to terminate the ssl traffic on reverse proxys on apache. I am not very good at this so i am looking for a solution i read that you can do this in the whitepapers on the subject IAS.
    Much thanks for any answer.

    1) So initially we had the following:
    <Object name="reverse-proxy-/">
    Route fn="set-origin-server" server="http://server-backend"
    </Object>
... and when getting a 401 from the back-end server it would seem that entering credentials in the dialog prompt does not work as is OOB; had it worked we would not have attempted anything further and hence this post would not exist... if we directly access the back-end server our credentials work so that is not the issue.
    2) I agree that the "set-basic-auth" directive should be removed - as it is clearly to supply a user id and password - what was provided was a far fetched attempt to get this to work and will clearly remove it as well as the "forward-proxy-agent" and "forward-proxy-auth"
When you configure Web Server 7.0 as a reverse proxy, basic auth should work out of the box. If it doesn't, I recommend looking at the HTTP messages to figure out what's gone wrong. If you don't know how to do that and you have a support contract, Sun support should be able to help you. That is interesting - is this OOB feature documented anywhere?
I'll turn up the log level on the RP and see what happens - if I turn it high enough should I be able to see the request headers being forwarded; I'll also try to look at the backend server logs. Is there anything else you suggest - i.e. should be trying to snoop the traffic....

I am connecting some users at out site to an NM-32AM (four octal cables).  I have not done this in MANY years but it looks very straightforward.  I first need to install the driver (in Windows) for the modem.  The links on this page

  • Multimedia key issue in a terminal emulator

My keyboard has a few multimedia keys(XF86AudioRaiseVolume, etc.) and
they have been correctly recognized by X and have keycodes/keysyms. I
can get them work on most programs, but they are not recognized by
programs run inside a terminal emulator(urxvt or xterm, for example).
Specifically, I want to control my emms playlist via
XF86AudioPrev/XF86AudioNext. I have the key bindings in emacs start up
file and it actually works when emacs appears as a standalone X
window. But it fails when emacs is inside a terminal. it appears to
me that the terminal/shell never delivers these key strokes to any
    processes spawned by them.
I searched for the keysym/keymap resources in urxvt/xterm but can't
quite catch the idea and don't even know if this helps.

    Response marked with
    line 1 16
    modem InOut
it says that, "line 2 does not support modem control"
    - can you please try only one line at a time, that is:
    line 1
    modem inout
then try line 2 and so on and see if we see errors for specific lines only (which we can investigate further)
    Then I typed:
    (config)#line 0 17
    (config-line)#modem InOut
it says, "line 0 does not support modem control. Now it doesn't talk about line 2, instead it says that line 0 does not support modem control.
This error is ok since line 0 is console and does not support modem control, mind you IOS spills out errors one after another so probably would have given error for line 2 next.
In here, the main problem is that, when I type:
    (config)#line 1 16
    (config-line)#no exec
and when I telnet, the router doesn't even prompt for anything. But when I again say, "exec" in line mode, then the router prompts me for the username.
Do you mean reverse telnet out of these lines? Not sure I understand what you are trying to do here.
    A few things to check:
    1. Is the router completely up, means its not in boot mode etc.
    2. Are the IOS images different or same on the working vs non working 2511?
    Thanks, Mak

  • Cisco 2611 Terminal Server

I wonder about this line of output:
    Status: Ready, Connected, Active
and wonder what happens if you issue the command clear line 41 from privilege mode of the terminal server?
The output shows that it has been used 15 times. Has it worked before or has it ALWAYS failed?
If you remove the terminal server cable and connect directly to the router console port with a PC does it work?
If you connect a different cable from the terminal server to the router and attempt access with the different reverse telnet port does it work?
If you can provide answers to these we might be closer to having answers to your issue.
    HTH

  • Help Configuring 2811 as Terminal Console Server

Hi Netpros, Hope you can help.
    I have a 2811 with a HWIC-16A (16 Port Async HWIC) installed in slot 0.
I have configured one LAN (e0) interface and would like users to be able to telnet on TCP ports 2001-2015 to the LAN (e0) interface IP and then have terminal access to the devices connected on the appropriate ports. Similar to our old setup on a AS2511. I can't find any information regarding this specific configuration apart from some stuff on reverse Telnet.
The link below specifies how to create a reverse telnet for this scenario however i would like to have users connecting via the LAN to consoles of devices on the async intefaces. This document also doesn't mention how or if I need to configure all the indivdiaul Async interfaces found the 2811 when using this HWIC.
    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/793/access_dial/comm_server.html
    Currently i have ;
    Inteface async 0/0/0 - 0/0/15
    no ip address
    transport slip
    line 0/0/0 0/0/15
    no exec
    login
    password password
    exec-timeout 5 0
    transport input all
    flowcontrol hardware
Is this all i need or do i need some other magic to get the router to allow logons the the remote devices.
    THanks

    Hi,
Please try the following under the interfaces (Edit: The "physical-layer async" is required only if the interface is A/S which might not be your case, but please try "async mode interactive" under the async interfaces):
    physical-layer async
    async mode interactive
Also please make the flowcontrol none under the lines.
    BR,
    Mohammed Mahmoud.
