ASA5520 reverse telnet problem

Hi all,
I have a problem with ASA5520 and reverse telnet. I recently upgrade IOS on ASA5520, asa921-k8. Problem is that cisco has latest IOS version asa91x.... for this platform.
I have 7201 on remote site, and connect his aux to asa console. When I do telnet to specific port, this is output:

High Memory: 2048 MB

This is run over and over. I just can't enter a ROMMON mode of ASA. I have older IOS on flash which works.
I don't know what to type to enter in rommon mode. I tried every combinatios of characters but nothing. I used Putty, SecureCRT.
Any idea?

Nenad

So ESC isn't working during boot? FYI 9.2 is not supported on non-X ASA chassis (which I'm sure you have now figured out). You can also try changing the escape sequence so ESC will work. Check this link on how to change that.

  • Reverse telnet to a specific line, based on AAA credentials

I want to setup a console server like a 2600 or something with a 16 or 32 port async module and allow users to access only certain ports/lines by reverse telnet based on login credentials.
For example, user joe can reverse telnet to ports 1 and 2, while user jane can reverse telnet to ports 3 and 4. User Jon can reverse telnet to ports 1 through to 6.
Is there a way to make this work? A document somewhere that outlines what's involved?
    Thanks in advance.

2600 Series is a Multiservice Platform so you can't convert like access server but you can enable the role based access.

  • Why the name Reverse Telnet ?

Forgive me for this simple ( and to some, stupid) question. Why is reaching the console ports of devices attached to a terminal server called Reverse Telnet. I am confused about the "Reverse" part.
    1. You reach "terminal server" by some suiteable means (telnet, ssh, console) from a device say your computer.
        c:\> telnet 10.10.10.1
        termsrv >
    2. You effectivily telnet to localhost (terminal server) on a specific port bound to certain TTY connection
        termsrv > R1                                  ! ip host R1 2001 <<loopback_address_termsrv>>
        R1>
Whats different for this second telnet is, instead of the telnet server (running on terminal server) presenting you with a second command shell it connects the mapped console port to the new telnet session. Effectively you read from or write to console port of R1.
R1 is oblivious about this whole operation. What's so "Reverse" about this second telnet session ?
    Thanks.

Ah, this is a good question.  Step into my time machine, and travel with me back to late eighties.  The 3Com 3C501 PC Ethernet card was released at the bargain basement price of $999 USD and the mighty Interl 386-DX33 was released to great fanfare.  Windows ran on top of DOS and all PC IP networking stacks were 3rd-party bolt-ons.  When you communicated with a computer, whether DEC, IBM or whomever you did it with a DUMB TERMINAL.  A terminal, for thos eof you who have never sern one,  was either a keyboard and a printer combo (like a Decwriter 100)  or a CRT text screen (Like a VT220, 80 columns by 24 lines) and a keyboard.  What you typed went out the serial port to a computer, and the computer sent text and screen drawing back commands through that same serial port.  That was the common human-computer interface of that era.
In the bad old days, the terminals were connected directly to the computers by serial interface cards and RS-232 cable.  As computers got faster, more and more terminals could be supported.  This started to get ridiculous as many serial lines emerged from these computers.  The bigger computers  looked like a mutant octopus.
Enter the TERMINAL SERVER, one of Cisco's early products. (The ASM)
The Cisco ASM terminal server took up to 96 terminals in an area and provided serial port connections for them.  It then multiplexed those terminals over Ethernet in order to reach an Ethernet connected computer (host).  The host computers were now freed from the sea of serial cables and could service dozens to hundreds of terminals thorough a single Ethernet port!   As a result, dozens to hundreds of slow, lightly used 9600 bps serial cables were replaced by a single 10 Mbit/sec connection.
The Cisco ASM software provided a telnet client to each serial port so that each terminal could connect to any telnet server (host) on the any network.  This allowed users to connect to multiple computers and relieved the load of computers providing telnet client services to directly attached terminals.  In this model, connections were initiated from a terminal on the port of the Cisco ASM to some distant computer.
Over time, Cisco noticed that there were computers and other devices (like the IBM 7171) that could not support Ethernet conenctions, but had dozens upon dozens of physical serial ports.  To make it so that network based telnet clients all over the Internet could access such an Ethernet-free computer, Cisco implemented a telnet SERVER function in the ASM.  Connections from a distant telnet client could now conenct through the ASM telnet server and reach these serial ports which had previously been limited to local terminals or expensive modem connections.  Since this activity was the exact reverse of the original use of the ASM, the function became known as "Reverse telnet."
In summary:  When a serially attached device CONSUMES service FROM the network, that is TELNET.  (The original design!)
When a serially attached device PROVIDES services TO the network, that is REVERSE TELNET. (The opposite of the original design.  But useful!)
Now, I will wait for people who have been in the industry longer than I have to go on about SNA, 3270s, paper tape and punch cards.

  • Suspend reverse telnet in Terminal

    Hi All,
I'm unable to suspend a reverse telnet session (e.g. from an access server to a router) with Terminal.
    The character sequence is: < ctrl-shift-6> < x >
This works perfectly from the Win XP command line but not from OSX (10.5.4) Terminal. When pressing "CTRL-SHIFT-6" I hear a beep an the key combination is not accepted. Tried will all the terminal types, as ANSI rather than VT-100, with no luck?
    Anybody can help?
    Thanks a lot,

  • CSS one-armed-config and SMTP reverse lookup problems?

I was wondering if there would be potential reverse lookup problems from other company's when we try to send mail to their mail Domains.
If I configure failover for our mail server, I am thinking if we are sending mail, there could be a reverse-lookup issue, because our mail server would be configured with public IP Addresses other than what the MX record points to in DNS.
If we originate mail from our inside users, it will originate from the service IP address and not the VIP address.
    Is this a valid concern?

The main advantage of this configuration is that the web servers will receive the IP address of the client that made the request. This is often required by web servers' administrators for accounting purposes.
In a one-armed configuration only, the network port ( Enet0) is used on the SCA. Only this specific port can be used for this setup. Encrypted and decrypted traffic will go through the same link

  • Setting up reverse telnet for 1900 witch access

Hey all - I set up a lab to mess around with at home. The switch is an ancient dinosaur, but still it gives me something to mess with.
Does the 1900 xswitch support a reverse telnet port? Anything I need to be aware of in configuring the line? I can telnet to the management port on the switch. I can attach a console cable and connect to the console port. I tried setting up a 2509 router with an Octal cable for access. It works for reverse telnet to my other Cisco routers, but I get "% Connection refused by remote host" when I try reverse telnet to the switch.
    Help!

Thanks for the info. I verified the line:

  • 866VAE-K9 Modem/AUX and rev. telnet Problem

    Hi Everyone,
I am currently observing some strange behavior of 866VAE-K9 router which might be a bug or my mistake, so I would very much appreciate your suggestions...
The 866VAE-K9 router has a single physical AUX/CON port.
The documentation states that in order to use AUX with a modem
    one has to:
    line con 0
     modem enable
If I do this, some process starts on the line 1 and prevents
using of chat scripts and reverse telnet:
     start-chat Dialout1 aux 0
% Chat script can not be run on line running other process
    telnet 192.168.10.1 2001
    Trying 192.168.10.1, 2001 ...
% Connection refused by remote host
If I clear line 1, and immediately after that start a chat script,
then it works (telnet hangs on at "asserting DTR"), but if I wait for
several seconds the line 1 becomes busy again...
    Your suggestions/ideas are very appreciated!

  • Not able to see executions in operator - Reverse engineer problem

    Hi All,
I´m starting a new project, this is the situation. I've created the agent (physical and logical), it's running as a service (OPMN instance). When I execute the test, "Agent test Successfull". So I guess that is not the problem.
I'm creating a new model, I've already created the Data server (SQL server), connection test is Ok, I've also created the physical and Logical Schema. The problem is after creating a new model, when I select reverse engineer option, everything looks like that data is being correctly retrieve, however data do not appear in the model. When I go to the operator to check the log, nothing is there. Any idea?
    Thanks in advance,
    Gonzalo.-

Do you mean to to say that uou are not finding any infor about the reverse engineering process in Operator ?
If yes then please note Standard reverse engineering does not list down the operation performed in Operator.
If you are using some RKM then only it will display the steps performed in Operator

  • Telnet problem

    Hello.
I have Cisco Router 876 Series, and have problem with telnet. i cant connect via telnet from remote office to my router. does anybody know how to solve that problem.
I have two vlan, vlan 1 is a nativ vlan and it is config for inside network, and vlan 2 for outside.
    and fa0, fa1, and fa2 interface is in vlan1, while fa3 is in vlan2.
    Anybody please!!

you stated you have it configured for ssh. does ssh work? i would suggest using that anyway. perhaps you have it only configured to use telnet from inside not outside aswell.
you will need something like this
    telnet 10.1.2.0 255.255.255.0 outside
regardless of what you have in acl if you dont apply telnet to ouside it just wont work.

    Thak you in advance.

Take a look at the following bug

You will need to upgrade CAT OS to get past this bug.

  • Reverse Proxy Problem

    Hi!
I am configuring Oracle iPlanet is 7.0.15 to have one instance reverse proxy to another instance. They are different only in port numbers. The destination port is 2321.
I have set up the reverse proxy in Content Handling -> Reverse Proxy setting.
Problem is: When I display the URL of the proxy in the web browser, I see the index.html of the original instance, not the destination instance. I am expecting the web page to be redirected to the destination instance. Please help. Thanks.

    Hi,
You have set up your reverse proxy on the URL '/hk'
       NameTrans fn="map" from="/hk" name="reverse-proxy-/hk" to="http:/hk"
If you want this to work for the URL '/index.html', you need to set up the revere proxy on the URL '/'.
