Suspends fails the first time, but succeeds the second time

Hi all,
I am running Arch Linux on my Dell XPS 15 9530 laptop, and overall I am very happy with the combination. I have however had some issues with suspending.
The problem is that the first time I try to suspend the machine it seems to go to sleep, but then two seconds later it automatically wakes up again. If I then immediately try again to suspend, it works (it does not wake up automatically). Does anyone know what could be going on, and how this can be fixed?
Usually I suspend from my gnome 3 desktop, but I have also tried to suspend directly using 'systemctl suspend' without having an X server running, and the result is exactly the same. I have tried a few versions of the vanilla kernel, but also the linux-lts and the linux-ck images, but to no avail.
Here is the output from dmesg, where suspend fails:

Thanks for the response. I should have said so, but I had already tried that, but without any luck. It seems like it doesn't change anything.

  • C++ Call to DLL made in LabVIEW Fails the second time it is called

    I have an application where a C++ executive calls a LabVIEW DLL (a LabVIEW application built into a DLL).
    The executive calls and operates the DLL fine the first time (NT, the applications task manager shows LabVIEW runtime runs, then stops when the DLL is done. However, when the executive calls the DLL a second time, it hangs, and the runtime engine never shows up in the applications task manager as running.
    However, this only occurs when something like IMAQ, DAQ, or another custom DLL call is occurring. We tried it with a simple DLL that only uses a call to the sound VIs, and it seems to run fine, although as the program called is very short, and the task manager slow, we never see the runtime engin
    e in the task manager. We are going to put a popup dialog in to ensure that the DLL is being called reliably, but we believe it is.
    We are unable to answer why when we call something that uses IMAQ, that the DLL doesn't run right the second time. We are unsure of the reasons, but believe it to be related to thread creation and destruction in the executive.
    If anyone out there has any insight into this, we would be happy to see it.
    We will be putting in a formal request for support from NI, but wanted to poll the audience as well, as we know from first hand experience that LabVIEW users often times have more experience with this sort of thing than developers.
    Thanks a bunch

    I often answer emails from home, but I work for NI on the LV development
    team. So anything I know about, NI knows about. The info I was
    describing about the DLL execution system is not well documented since
    we were hoping that it would work we
    ll with the way Windows Apps are
    typically written. I suspect that we will need to write a Tech Note
    to cover the nitty gritty. This sort of info gets lost in manuals,
    and it is subject to change as we learn how people are expecting to
    use it.
    Anyway, my post was to explain why your use of it didn't work.
    In general, we believe that LV DLLs are thread savvy, reentrant
    VIs can be called from multiple threads simultaneously, execution can
    continue in the background after the DLL call has returned, and the UI
    is live provided the calling app processes messages in that thread.
    If you have other issues or questions, just ask.

    Hi Alex,
    Thank you for your reply. It is true that I failed in IE 6, 7, 8 with amf-secure channel. Firefox and Google Chrome is working.
    I have checked the services-config.xml (should be the default) and see the  <add-no-cache-headers>false</add-no-cache-headers> in channel definition my-secure-amf:
    <!-- Secure Servlet-based endpoints -->
            <channel-definition id="my-secure-amf" class="mx.messaging.channels.SecureAMFChannel">
                <endpoint url="https://{server.name}:{server.port}/{context.root}/messagebroker/amfsecure" class="flex.messaging.endpoints.SecureAMFEndpoint"/>
                <properties>
                    <!--HTTPS requests on some browsers do not work when pragma "no-cache" are set-->
                    <add-no-cache-headers>false</add-no-cache-headers>
                </properties>
            </channel-definition>
    For my-amf, it is set to true
    <!-- Servlet Based endpoints -->
            <channel-definition id="my-amf" class="mx.messaging.channels.AMFChannel">
                <endpoint url="http://{server.name}:{server.port}/{context.root}/messagebroker/amf" class="flex.messaging.endpoints.AMFEndpoint"/>
                <properties>
                    <polling-enabled>false</polling-enabled>
                    <add-no-cache-headers>true</add-no-cache-headers>
                    <invalidate-session-on-disconnect>true</invalidate-session-on-disconnect>
                </properties>
            </channel-definition>
    Is there any other place I need to add the add-no-cache-headers?
    I'm using Websphere application, do I need to set any properties in Websphere?
    Thank you and look forward to your reply,
    Anh

    Sorry to hear that.
    As alexdon says, this sounds like it could be network related. Have you been in contact with your operator about this? Does it happen both on GSM only and WCDMA only? You can select this under Settings -> More -> Mobile networks -> network mode.

  • Dual-track audio after export plays on first clip, but not on second?

    So, I've been working on a project with video that has two audio tracks, and they play fine in the preview window in premiere, but as soon as I export them, the first clip of it works, but the second clip I have does not have the second audio track, just the first. If anyone could shed some light on whats going on that would be great. Also, I tried using media encoder, in which I couldn't hear either of the audio tracks.

    Hi incinirate,

    That's rather strange. Sorry to hear that.
    Where did these files originate? From a video camera, screen capture, webcam, or mobile device? What is the format of these files? More details on your system, OS, version of Premiere Pro, etc., please.
    Thanks,

  • Suspend fails 50% of time on Linux 3.1.1, works on 3.0.4

    Hi folks,
    I upgraded yesterday from 3.0.4 to 3.1.1 and noticed that suspend wasn't working anymore as it used to. I began to investigate the problem and at it's core I believe that the cause is a buggy BIOS - the lid states are not correctly reported. To be precise, after resume, the lid state is:
    $ cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state
    state: closed
    which is obviously invalid. The problem is described in detail already in a 2006 bug report on ubuntu bug tracker.
    However, to my Toshiba Satellite U300, this didn't pose a big problem, because the Linux 3.0.4 always returned a lid close event, regardless of the lid state. However, in 3.1.1 it seems that a lid close event is not generated if the lid state is already closed. Thus when the lid is closed, no event is generated and the computer does not suspend. But when the lid is opened, a lid open event is generated (note: lid open is never generated when resuming from a suspend!) which corrects the lid state as open!
    This means that to suspend the computer, the lid has to be closed every time twice. I know this problem affects other models too.. I seem to have an HP laptop in this household that's showing roughly the same symptoms.. lid needs to be closed twice. It's running Linux Mint though, and I haven't diagnosed the problem at all yet.
    Here are the differences between 3.0.4 and 3.1.1 in acpi_listen
    linux 3.1.1

    They both repeat the same pattern. Any gurus here got any advices/ways to deal with this situation? I suppose a DSDT fix would be in place.. it would be nice to catch the lid open event too! For now I'll be sticking with 3.0.4 for the sake of convenience.

    skunktrader wrote:Same problem here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=130372 complete with a workaround
    Thanks, but unfortunately not the same problem. In the above url the problem was about laptops suspending upon receiving a "lid open" event. I noticed that (my laptop was suspending when opening the lid..) and corrected it already before posting this thread.
    I'll try to clarify, step by step. Here is what happens, from the point when computer is freshly rebooted and turned on.
    Action - output of /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state - ACPI event generated - Result
    1) Close the lid - state: closed - button/lid LID close - computer suspends
    2) Open the lid - state: closed - no event - computer resumes, everything works great, but no lid open event.
    3) Close the lid - state: closed - no event - Nothing happens
    4) Open the lid - state: open - button/lid LID open - Lid open event.. state changes.
    5) Close the lid - state: close - button/lid LID close - Computer suspends
    6) Move to step 2
    The only difference between 3.1.1 and 3.0.4 behaviour is that in 3.0.4 a LID close event is generated in step 3 (and thus the next step is step 2). The proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state is always "closed". I've been browsing the kernel git, but haven't found at least so far what has caused it.
    I'll try to pinpoint the exact version change where the problem occurs.

  • IOS updates always fail on one Mac, but succeed on another

    Hi,
    unfortunately there is no general iOS subforum, so I post it here in the iPad forum in hope that someone has an idea.
    Whenever I am trying to update one of my iDevices from my Mac Pro (10.6.4 and iTunes 9 or 10, both have the same problem) the update runs half way through and then gets stuck on the apple logo, progress bar at about half way through.
    This is reproducable with any iDevice (tried iPhone 4, iPhone 3G and iPad).
    If I plug the same devices into my Macbook Pro, the update (or then: restore) works without any glitches.
    So it must be something with my Mac Pro, but I have no idea what might cause this.
    Has anyone else experienced something like this before?
    Thanks
    Sascha

    HI,
    So it must be something with my Mac Pro
    Boot from install disc, run Disk Utility in case the startup disk needs repairing and check for free disk space.
    Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
    Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
    (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
    Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
    Select First Aid in the Main panel.
    (Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
    Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
    If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
    If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
    When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
    Select your start up disk and click Restart
    While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free space.

  • Sync fails going Mac touch; but succeeds going MobileMe Mac/touch. Why?

    The MacBook has all latest software/updates. Touch is at 3.0. I have about 756 names/nos. in my Addressbook. If I add an item to the Addressbook and then sync the Mac with the touch the new item does not appear. Nor does it appear in my MobileMe addressbook. I've tried all the variants I can think of short of blanking out the touch and reloading everything. Everything else (music, Calendars) appears to sync correctly. I've verified all of the settings on the Mac and touch.
    Note however that when I add an item to the Addressbook on my MobileMe site the sync +works correctly+ and the item appears in the address books on my Mac and touch.
    Why is this? And is there a fix?
    Thank you everyone.

    That's not cool. Mac used to be a fail safe company. Now it failed me. I have to spend more money to get my expensive IPod Touch to work with my Mac. Outstanding!!! What do I have to purchase to upgrade my Mac from 10.4.11 to a 10.5.8 or later?

  • Cant hear on first call but works on second call!

    My wife and I both got Xperia Z1's at the start of November.
    Recently my wife has been having a problem with her phone.
    Nearly every time she calls me I cant hear her but she can hear me. If she hangs up and phones me back it works fine!
    Anyone got any ideas why?

    Its been happening for a few weeks now, only seems to be when she calls me although she doesnt really use the phone to call anybody else. We tried calling other numbers yesterday and it seemed ok and also worked ok when she called me! Maybe it has sorted itself out now

  • FRM-41213 message will come up the first time

    When users run reports in Oracle Forms from time to time, particularly after the report server engine (InitEng=1, minEng=1, maxEng=2) has been idle for a while, the FRM-41213 message will come up the first time. Then, the second time (or after that) when users try to run reports again reports come up.
    It looks like, after certain idle time, all existing report server engines are killed automatically. Then, the very first call to the report server at that time will usually fail because it has exceeded the time limit to ping the report server when it is actually trying to start an engine.
    Is this an issue with the server configuration? If so, is there any way to correct it?
    Thanks.
    Andy

    The OAS version is actually 10.1.2.3 - latest patches applied to 10.1.2.0.2. The issue is actually intermittent and usually happens when there is a cold call to the report server from RUN_REPORT_OBJECT in Forms. When the first call fails, the second time (or after that) when the same report is called will always succeed. However, this failure pattern is consistent. I also tried to use "trcrro1012" to generate some trace files and got the following. Thanks.

  • ITunes wont start the second time

    Hi, I posted this problem before but probably because my subject title was a little wide nobody looked at it..
    This is my problem, I download iTunes install it everything works fine but after I close itunes or my computer when I want to start iTunes again it wont start???

    I have the exact same problem. I use Windows Vista SP1.
    iTunes.exe does show up in the task manager, but there is no way I can access it, because it doesn't show up.
    I had this problem since I installed the update to iTunes 8. I tried several times to completely uninstall it an reinstall it. Everytime it worked the first time, but failed the second time. Then I uninstalled agan and reinstalled iTunes 7. Same thing, worked first time, failed since then.
    Does anyone have an idea what the problem is ? There is no error message.
    Thanks in advance!

  • I've lost the use of Appleworks in 10.9.2. Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other?

    I've lost the use of Appleworks by upgrading to 10.9.2.
    Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other? I'd like to be able to boot to the older OS when I need Appleworks and  few other applications that aren't available on OS 10.9.2.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hello again, WZZZ,
    Here's an update. I was successful in creating two partitions on my internal drive, and in installing OS 10.6.6 on the second partition, as per your guidence. I now have it up to 10.6.8 with all the security updates and AppleWorks. A great thing.
    Some thoughts:
    • The partitioning had one hitch; it failed at first. But once I "repaired" the disc with Disc Utility the partitioning went thru.
    • The partitioning took a long time in 'resizing the partition.' A few hours I think it was. Lots of progress bar watching.
    • If I had it to do again, I'd size the two partitions differently. My original data was occupying about 230 Gb of the 320 Gb disc. I made the new partitions share the space, about 230 and 75Gb. That left very little available space for the main disc. I ought to have put some breathing room in there. As it is, it's an incentive to clean up all those files, especially all those iTunes files. I now have about 10% of available space there and mean to continue deleting.
    So, all in all a good project that got me where I wanted to go. Thank you for your help.
    Appreciatively,
    wallah

  • Suspend command only works the first time

    I'm seeing a strange issue with my machine. If I suspend the system by using either:
    systemctl suspend
    or
    dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.UPower" /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend
    the system will suspend the first time, but then if I try to suspend again, it doesn't suspend completely. The screen goes black and my external hd shuts down, but the box doesn't shutdown. It stays running.
    Could anyone offer some suggestions on what to check?
    I checked the systemd journal and I don't see any errors that stand out as being the problem.

    I've got a similar error. When trying to suspend via systemctl the machine goes down.
    The screen goes blank and I can hear my harddrives spinning down but before they go completely silent, the system comes back up again.
    Fully working as if I never even wanted to suspend. I'm pretty sure my drives don't like that a lot.
    The first time after a boot works however, as mentioned by Gumper.
    systemctl reports this:
    A dependency job for suspend.target failed. See 'journalctl -xn' for details.
    But I can't see anything related in the journal.
    This is my second suspend problem now. I already have trouble waking up from suspension on my notebook:

    This new problem now is on my x64 desktop machine if that helps. Of course this happens on the same day I clean my pkg cache

  • Time machine would back up only the first time after I shut off my imac and started it up again.  Then it would fail or claim it could not locate my external Hard Drive even though it's icon was showing in the time machine dialog window.

    Time machine only ever backed up the first time it runs immediately after I start up my computer after it has been shut off.  All other back up attemps fail.  Recently it stopped recognizing the icon for my external hard drive in the time machine dialog window where you select the hard drive to back up to, and turn on and off the time machine function.  Now the external HD icon only shows up on the desk top but no longer in the dialog box. I just tried shutting the computer off and turning it on again and now the light is on, on the external hard drive but the icon does not even appear on the desk top.
    The external hard drive is a 1TB Seagate. The drive still has plenty of unused capacity.  I ran a diagnostic test on it. It said the disk needed repair but the repair function would not work. The message stated that it could not be unmounted and repair is not available because the disk can't be written to. The Mac OX utility said the disk can still be opened but can't be changed nor repaired.  The external HD is not S.M.A.R.T. supported.
    I haven't tried replacing the cable yet. Is that the next thing I should try?
