Switch One User Only

Is it possible to connect a new Macbook Pro to a G5 iMac and have it ONLY move a single user from the iMac? I ask this question hoping for two pieces of advice:
1. How to transfer a single user when starting a new computer, including what cables I need before I start, etc.
2. Any problems moving from a G5 to an Intel mac
I would appreciate any advice I could get for either of those two.
Thanks,
Lawrence

So I can just transfer the user folder via external hard drive?
No. User account information is stored withing the NetInfo database. What you can do is clone the current computer intallation to an external FireWire HD, using something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc, ensuring that the clone is bootable, boot the machine with the clone, delete the other accounts which modifies the NetInfo database, and then hook up the FWHD to the new machine and use the Migration Assistant. Otherwise, do the same thing on the old computer and use the Migration Assistant.
Will that bring all my applications and settings over to the new computer?
No. Transferring the user folder will not transfer the application stuff, except for the preference files you established with the old computer and anything that the applications installed within the user folder.
Should I use the transfer assistant started when I first turn on the computer to transfer it, or just transfer the single user folder?
If you want the applications and user information, you transfer everything.
BTW, when you do startup the new machine, ensure you use the same username, short name, and password; otherwise, the Migration Assistant will treat the old user account as a seperate user.

  • One user only cannot connect SharePoint 2007 calendar to Outlook 2010

User is unable to connect a SharePoint calendar to Outlook.
The normal procedure is to open the calendar, click Actions > Connect to Outlook > Allow > Allow > Yes and the calendar appears in Outlook. However, for this user only, she clicks Actions > Connect to Outlook > Allow > Allow and then
nothing happens. The final dialog box, where she would click Yes, doesn't appear, and the calendar is not connected.
It is working for everyone else who has the same permissions as her (several hundred users). She is able to view and edit the calendar in SharePoint, so the SharePoint permissions are working. It's just that she cant connect it to Outlook.
I didn't see anything obvious in the event logs and am not sure where to go from here. Any ideas?
    Hoping someone can help.

    Hi,
According to your description, I noticed that the issue only happened to one specific user. Please confirm if there is any error information when the Outlook can’t connect to Exchange server.
If this Exchange account can’t be set up automatically in your Outlook client, please try to manually configure this account to have a try. To configure the Exchange account manually, please refer to:

  • IPhoto4 quit importing photos - but from one user only ??

Hi, Sorry for the long post but it may save several reply/post exchanges.
iPhoto4.0.3 just decided to no longer import photos from a Canon Digital IXUS V3 - but only for one (managed) user. It still works perfectly for the other (admin) user.
As an administrator, I have tried - on the managed account -(but perhaps not in the correct order!) the following potential solutions learnt from this Forum (mostly thanks to Brie Fly and others helping other folks, ta!):
    1. Selecting all items in the /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/ folder
    2. Dragging to the trash the file com.apple.iPhoto.plist (located in User's Library/Preferences folder) and then letting the system regenerate it
    3. Using Disk Utilities to Repair Disk Permissions on the HD
    4. Holding down Shift+Option while opening iPhoto4 to get it to rebuild the iPhoto Library (which it successfully did by producing iPhoto Library-1, so there are now two sets - the original file and the -1 file)
    5. Checking that in Image Capture, the option to start iPhoto is checked when a camera is detected
Unfortunately none of this worked for the managed user account, while there had been no problem until now. Of course, I do not know what might have changed to trigger this halt to importing.
What happens on the managed user account is that the camera is plugged into USB, switched on and then iPhoto4 starts up (saying 'loading photos') - so far OK! But then when I try to import, there is no camera recognized. Trying to use the Image Capture application gives a similar non-recognition outcome. When the start-up option is changed from 'start iPhoto' to 'Image Capture' then instead of iPhoto, Image Capture starts up at camera switch-on but there is again no camera recognition. Trying 'Browse Devises' there does not work, either.
Exactly the same camera, cable, battery, etc. combination still works without any problems on the admin account: both iPhoto (if set for start-up) or Image Capture start up correctly, recognize the camera and can import photos from it.
As usual, the camera card was formatted immediately prior to this set of photos having been recorded on it.
Interesting... All suggestions extremely welcome! And special thanks to all who volunteer their time by sharing valuable expertise and experience. Cheers!

Hi and Thanks to all who helped!
PhillyPhan - as one engineer to another - I am an inveterate grammar fanatic also! (What is it with engineers, maybe we're trained to attempt to eliminate all possible errors?!)
Creating a new non-admin user was the key as it gave a possibility for comparison of all details - because the new user account happily imported into iphoto4 from the camera immediately.
The secret was (after much checking of details in each non-admin user's preferences, etc.) that the new user account showed as 'standard' while the problematic one was 'managed'.
Apparently, 'standard' means a non-admin user (without any restrictions) while 'managed' means a non-admin user with some restrictions (set by the 'admin' user under the Parental Controls tab to apply to the 'managed' user).
Simply removing the Parental Controls from the 'managed' user account - thus making it into a 'standard' user account - solved the importing problem immediately.
There must have been some obscure restriction(s) imposed onto iphoto under the 'managed' settings (even though I had tried to make available all options that I could find). I had set up the 'managed' status a long time ago (much prior to the importing problem arising) in an attempt to cure an earlier unrelated application access problem.
All is well now and I really appreciate all the help (also gleaned from earlier posts by others). Cheers!

  • Firefox 31.0 has lost functionality for one user only. No menu dropdown. Win 8.1.

The primary user has no problems and nor did the second user until yesterday when, returning after a break, Firefox opened with a new tab, no menu bars and no menu button drop-down screen. If I clicked on Alt+menu bar or bookmarks bar, they appeared temporarily. It worked if I typed a url into the search box and I could add bookmarks but they would disappear on shutdown.
I have tried a reset through Profile Manager and, in desperation, deleted the user completely. After rebooting the PC and creating a new user, Firefox behaves exactly the same way, except that all the bookmarks have been deleted.
The primary user still has no problem with Firefox but it seems there is some basic problem with the addition of a second user.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

The folder for the second user may have corrupt files in it.

  • OS X Yosemit Network Problem - One user only!!!!!

I have a Mac mini in our home as a family computer.  Everyone in the house has an account on it.  As well as a few of us that have our own personal Mac systems.  My son's account constantly has problems.  What usually happens and is happening now is that ONLY his login can not get on the web to do anything,  The web browser thinks that it is not connected to the internet and you can not bring up a site.  Or maybe you can bring up one...but then it stops again.
    What I know:
    - Any other user on the same physical system can surf and get on the internet without problems.
    - When logged in as my son:
         - I can ping an internet ip address
         - I can traceroute to an internet ip address  (but it is SLOW!)
         - NSLookup returns a domain query correctly
         - Pinging by name fails, because it can not get an IP address
    I have:
         - Rebooted
         - Reset permissions
         - Reset PRAM
         - Reset NVRAM
         - Verified that there are no proxies setup
I can not explain this at all and am lost as to what I should do next....other than to create him a new account.  Which is what I usually do.

  • One user (only) getting "disk full" errors for network home folder

I have a few users in my office with their home folders on the server. Everyone seems to be fine except this one person, who, a few times a day, gets an error saying that there is no space in his home folder and a program can't save preferences or Mail can't write new mail to disk.
I don't have quotas turned on, and there is 120gb free on the disk with the home folders.
Has anyone experienced this before and know what the solution is? It's Server 10.3.9 and workstation 10.4.4.

I have about 100 Portable home users also here and only a few are affected with this issue. Their home folder on the server is 15GB but can't write more then 3.5GB to the server. It is very wierd.

  • Deluge and KDE - displaying incorrectly for one user only

My deluge (and possibly other gtk apps) are being displayed incorrectly in KDE.  You can see the screenshot attached, but the thing I mostly notice is the progress bar.  On my laptop, as well as any other user account on the PC in question, it's a very blue progress bar (so 100% torrents will be all blue, 0% no blue, and obviously in between as % increases).  In the past I've messed with various gtk/kde rendering apps (so that gtk apps will display "correctly" in KDE), but I don't currently have any installed.  I also have rm'ed the configs in question per the wiki ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … plications ).  I have tried removing the deluge config for my current user and it still doesn't "fix" the issue.  I've gone through kde system settings to setting all display options to default-type options (which is what my laptop is set to).
Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on where I could look to fix this?  It's mostly an annoyance, but I've been trying to fix it for a while now so thought I'd finally ask for some help.
EDIT: I realize this should be in the Desktop/Apps sections, so if a mod could move it for me, that would be much appreciated.

    1. You said the projects were all saved "to a shared folder." Do you mean THE Shared folder? Your Mac's Users folder should list two Users, plus a folder named "Shared". Is that the folder you mean?
    2. The trouble is that an iMovie project isn't actually a file. It's a special kind of folder called a package, which contains other files and folders. (To look inside the package, Control-Click on the package icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu.)
    3. When YOU are the user and you create a new iMovie project, the package and everything it contains is configured with you as the owner. You are the designated owner of all the items that comprise the project. No one else can Write to the project.
    4. To change that, you have to change the project package into a normal Finder folder, adjust its permissions and the permissions of all the contents of that folder, then change it back into an iMovie package.
    Here's how:
In the Finder, choose Finder > Preferences. Click Advanced and turn ON "Show all file extensions".
The name of your iMovie project "My Sample Project" is now displayed as "My Sample Project.iMovieProject" in the Finder.
Remove ".iMovieProject" from the project name, removing the period. When the Finder asks, say OK.
The project package has now turned into a folder. Select the folder and choose Get Info.
Set Others permissions to "Read & Write". Then click "Apply to enclosed items". When the Finder asks, say OK.
Select the folder name again and add the extension ".iMovieProject" to the name. The folder will change back to an iMovie package.
The package will now allow anyone to Read and Write to the project.
    Karl
PS: This solution isn't very handy, obviously, but it does the job. A better solution is to buy an external hard drive, and configure it to Ignore permissions. (In the Get Info window for the disk.) That lets both users save projects to the drive without permission issues.

  • XFCE startup lags with one user only due to OPENOFFICE [NOT-SOLVED]

For some reason, when I start xfce4 with my only non-root user, the super key is "stuck" rendering several keys on the keyboard unusable because I have them bound as shortcuts.
i'm dual booting windows and the keyboard is functioning fine when I boot there, and strangely enough logging out and back in as root is also normal.
the only things i've down since the last time it was working was install openoffice, which I havent completely gotten to work yet (it freezes when I try to close it, anybody know why? I get some ICE connection refused error). and gaim.
any ideas? other than deleting the user and re-doing everything.. where can i look?
I deleted the user completely and remade a new user with the same name... the super key "stuck" problem is gone but for some reason the other problems remain.
    1) xfce takes 5 times longer to load than it does for root
    2) xfapplet won't load properly, but does for root
among others.. where can I look to solve these problems? im guessing I have to remove or edit the files associated with that account name but how? sorry still learning...

Every time I have heard of something that takes ages to load it's because the computer is missing the line
    127.0.0.1               localhost.localhost       localhost
in /etc/hosts, but I think it was only a Gnome problem

  • One project won't open for either user, another will open for one user only

My wife and I are new iMovie users. I have imported three projects (#1-3) from our camera, she has imported two projects (#4 & #5) - all to a shared folder. The first project I imported (#1) cannot be opened by either of us. In addition, my wife cannot open the second project that I imported (#2). We get the following error: "The project could not be opened, because the disk is full, the folder is locked, or the folder permission are incorrect." We can both open projects #3-5.
I have checked the permissions settings on all 5 projects. All are same, Read and Write priveleges for both of us. Anybody seen this before? Am I missing something?

  • Flash Player works for one user only

Running IE7 under Vista. Have one other user on laptop with Vista. I am the Administrator.Since downloading latest version of Flash Player it will work on my log in but not when the other user is logs in.
No error message. Simply all Active X items appear as box with a red X.  Have checked the Security settings for both users on IE appear the same.
Tried Adobe Support chat service but all they could do was direct me to a Forum.
    Any help will be appreciated.

This has come up multiple times over the last few months.  There has been a solution posted somewhere in this forum, but I don't remember what it was.
Try searching the forum for "limited user" or such; hopefully you will find it.

  • I have two users on my mac and want to know if I can add an iPad and to one user only?

I have a Mac, a Laptop, a Iphone and timemachine/wifi. My husband and I each have our own Logins, his is password protected. I want to know if I can add an Ipad to his profile seperately without everything being linked together. i.e.I don't want my email going to his Ipad.... (he has his own email address).

Well, for the e-mail part, you have to enter the account details into the ipad, so if you only enter your account or only his, the other won't even be on there so the e-mail will be separated.
I'm not up on separate users/partitions/accounts on the mac, but, going by PC's, you can install software that's only accessible to an individual user, same theory should apply to a mac.

  • Parental Control not logging for one user only

Hi, my two kids have parental control turned on for their individual accounts. On one account I get logs of their activity, the other I do not inside parental control preference pane. I found in the account that does not get logged the following:com.apple.familycontrols.overrides.plist.
Anyone know what this is and why it might be in that account?
Also any ideas as to why one account would not be getting logged?
I can see the details in her user account inside Library/applicationsupport/apple/parentalcontrol.
    Imac G5, 2gb ram, 10.5.6

The familycontrols.overrides property list interests me, especially because I can't find any information on it! Looking at its contents suggests that it is a temporary file created whenever an admin authorizes the managed user to exceed their daily login time limit (e.g., 30 minutes extra).
As for the not logging problem, I have it too. It seems to me that events.data -- the actual log -- is too large at 54 MB and am deleting it. (I note that it was updated at the time the managed user last used his account, so something is being recorded.) Wish me luck.

  • Finesse hangs at "signing in" for one user only

I have a single user account that is having issues.  Yesterday we temporarily deleted his UCCX extension off of his phone, which pulled it out of the IPCC Extension field for a few minutes while we were making phone changes.  Even after adding it back and setting him back up in UCCX, he is still having this issue
When he tries to log in, it hangs at "signing in".
    Notes:
    UCCX 10.5
User account/password are correct - we can use them to sign into the CUCM Self Care Portal page
It happens regardless of which PC we try to sign him in on.  Other UCCX users can sign in on those same systems (under the same Windows profile) without issue.
We have emptied his IPCC Extension field in CUCM to pull him out of UCCX then added it back and added him back to his team/skills, but it still hangs at "Signing In"
The user is also an administrator and can use those credentials to log into the UCCX Administration page and make changes, verifying that UCCX is passing credentials correctly for the user.
While hanging, he does not show up in my Finesse Supervisor Team View page so the system does not see him as logged in.
The RMCM application user in CUCM is associated with his phone.
Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

    Hi,
Make sure the correct extension is defined in CUCM Admin/User Management/End User/IPCC Extension. Also, I would try removing and re-associating the device to the RMCM Application User.
