Synchronous image display on external display

Hi,
I'm trying to get structural illumination microscopy using a LCoS spatial
light modulator working. The modulator is controlled using DVI interface, and
having no dedicated DVI capable hardware I'm stuck controlling the modulator
using a dual video output desktop PC. I've developed a VI that executes
following algorithm:
1) Show grid 1 on external display
2) Acquire frame 1
3) Show grid 2
4) Acquire frame 2
5) Show grid 3
6) Acquire frame 3
7) Compute and store image
8) Advance stage and repeat
I'm using the External Display VIs form the Vision menu group to display the
grids, and IMAQdx for the acquisition.
The problem I'm having is that when this looping is slow enough, say 5 s,
everything goes well, but when I optimized it and increased the speed, some of
the acquired frames are wrong. After some tedious debugging I've think the
problem is that shown images are delayed because of all the Windows fuss. There
is no way of synchronizing the displayed image with the acquisition routine -
after the image is "displayed" it's up for windows to actually
display it.
1) Is there a way to know that the image is actually drawn using IMAQ
WindDraw VI ?
2) Is there a better (as in faster, more predictable) way of showing a
bitmap image on an otherwise empty external display?
3) Maybe it is possible to control the external display using some kind of
low level video driver functions (OpenGL, DirectX, the card is NVIDIA, fairly
recent)?
4) Maybe the right way to do it would be to play a looping video? And if so,
how could this synchronizing issue resolved then.
Any kind of input would be appreciated.

Hi,
And thanks for the input. Yes, in fact we've made some progress, so I'll add some details on this problem. First the answers to A Person's questions:
1) The loop rate when this issue occurs is about 2-5 fps.
2) We are using a simple delay to throttle down the execution. Originally we intended to run this as fast as possible, so there was no need for specific execution speed.
And our progress is as follows:
1) As it appears and was confirmed by NI staff, we were unable to come up with any kind of workaround on the WindDraw method, so we're dropping it.
2) We've developed an simple DLL using VisualBasic to load our three bitmaps into a form window placed on the external display. The shown on one or the other bitmap now happens with a simple call to the DLL to change the visibility of a particular bitmap. It seems to solve our initial problem. Also, if that isn't enough, we're considering an analogous DLL using OpenGL orthographic projection window using three bitmaps and triple buffering. The specific bitmap would be shown then just by offsetting the video memory buffer.
3) The video idea was not that good after all I think. The advantage would still be fast DirectDraw accesses, but 2) method seems more reasonable.
And a little bit off this topic:
4) After solving this problem, we've encountered another. Now the camera acquisition isn't synchronized to the frame clock signal of the SLM. This produces a well known screen flicker seen on the TV when a computer or TV screen is filmed without a sync signal. Our camera, the Kappa DX4 274FW, has an external trigger connection, but the interface connection is a mini centronix. To be honest this is the first time I heard of it and it is next to impossible to get one for a reasonable price. Even if we could, there is no pinout nor the inner workings information concerning the trigger, the official site just states "External trigger". The official support is also ignorant. So that's thumbs down for Kappa. We've switched to Point Gray Chameleon camera, which has proper technical documentation on it's triggering functionality and the again present "we have and you don't, please buy from us" type connector was changed to a proper SMA connector with a bit soldering and drilling. The bad news is that the ActiveX interface used by this camera is using user defined return data types and some of the methods are grayed out when trying to call from LabView. According to
http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/27B959B430BA501486256A920071F567
It wont and should not work, so now we're considering moving to VisualBasic completely. Again, it's worth mentioning that the initial problem could be solved using method 2), but this felt kind of connected and this "industrial connector hindering" business got me frustrated. So sorry for the lengthy post.

  • Background Images Disappearing on External Display

I have a late model Macbook Air and just upgraded to Mountain Lion.  Since doing so every time my Mac goes to screensaver and then I unlock it, it loses my background image on my external monitor (which I use as my primary when docked).  The only way to then get it back is to logout and back in but then it onlh stays until it goes to screen saver again.  Once it's "lost" opening "Change Desktop Background" and activating different background images has no effect... it just stays an ugly gray.  This has onlhy been an issue since going to Mountain Lion and the image doesn't disappear on the Air's built-in display.  Any ideas?

Unfortunately my issue is back.  Selecting a new screensaver seemed to work for about 12 hours but now it's just the way it was.  Today I tried softwater suggestion...
Open Terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and copy/paste this command into the Terminal window:
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist
    press 'return' on your keyboard.
Restart your mac and test for the issue.
    ... to no avail.

  • Laptop Built In Display and External Display not Working

Hi all, I have a HP Envy M6-1158ca, and recently my Built-in display stopped working. I plugged it into an external display via HDMI and it showed no input. It seems as though the laptop is not booting into Windows either, as usually whenever my laptop boots into windows, the fingerprint scanner blinks letting me know I can now sign in using it. I am extremly frustrated with this, and have an unbelieveable amount of stress because this was my only PC. Please respond as soon as possible, it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes.. i think thats what might have damaged it...Notebook should always be completely powered off with the battery out and ac adapter disconnected while  replacing any internal hardware..
Shouldnt be a BIOS problem....but still you can check this link..

    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem

  • Internal display dead, external display works fine

    Hi,
I left my machine unplugged over the summer. When I came back, the internal display was dark.
The machine was making all the right noises at startup, and the Caps Lock key worked, and I could make it beep louder and softer with the volume F-keys, so I hooked it up to an external monitor. It works perfectly with the external monitor.
I went through the troubleshooting procedures - zap the pram, reset the power manager, boot from a CD - no video on the internal display.
While connected to the external monitor, I ran the System Information program and looked for the internal display device. It wasn't there! Only the external one shows up.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
I can post screenshots or System Information reports if anyone wants them.
    Thanks,
    Doug

Someone took it off my hands. They're going to use it with an external display.
    Thanks all!

  • Different resolutions for Macbook Pro display and External display

Is it possible to have different resolutions for a Macbook Pro and an external display. I prefer to see less but larger on my Macbook Pro whilst seeing more but smaller on my external display. I use the DVI output to connect to an Acer 22in display.
    Thanks in advance

I've actually tried that process and it doesn't work; I still get the same display qualities on both. Perhaps that process might work if one is not mirroring. Maybe there is a compatibility issue between my Macbook Pro and the Acer 223W. I'll persevere, but thanks for your help anyway.

    Hi Ian,
    allow me to chime in:
    You are absolutely correct!
In 'Mirroring Mode' both internal and external display have the same resolution.
Only in 'Extended Mode' you can have different resolutions for both displays.

  • Using MacBook Display as External Display

The monitor for my Mac desktop is actually an HDTV and being used as such, and I'd like to move my desktop into a room separate from the living room until I get a new tv, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a way that I could connect my desktops display ports to the Mini-DVI on the MacBook therefore making the MacBook a monitor or something along those lines, preferably without it shutting down?

Oh wow, it looks like it might work, I can't tell but how are they connected, just over a network?
Hopefully I'll be able to share screens with my screenless desktop and activate it.
    Thanks!

  • Images too dark on external display

    Hello,
I use Lightroom on my (Lenovo) notebook. Because of the small screen size, I tried using it with an external (Samsung) display. However, when I open Lightroom on the external display, all the images suddenly seem way too dark. It is the case that this display is generally too dark, because when I view the same picture in a photo viewer or a browser it is not too dark. See for example this screenshot. On the left hand you see an image (export from Lightroom) in my browser, on the right hand the same image in Lightroom. You can clearly see it is much darker. When I view both images on the screen of the notebook itself, there is no difference between them.
Actually, when I move the Lightroom window from the notebook display to the external display, you can clearly see Lightroom adjusting the images from light to dark.
Does anyone know what causes this, and how I can prevent Lightroom from showing the images too dark?
    Thanks!

I guess you misunderstood my problem. It's not only that images on the external display are way darker than on the notebook, but also that on the external display images in Lightroom are much darker than when I view the same image on the same display in a photo viewer or a browser. In the screenshot pictured above both the light and the dark version of the image are on the same external display.
However, in the meantime I found a solution. Changing the Windows Color System device profile to a non-WCS-profile did the trick: Photos appear as black, gray rectangles | Lightroom | Windows
Thanks anyway for trying to help.

  • Satellite L500 - How to show external display after closing lid?

    Hi,
i`m using the Satellite L500-120 Notebook, and before installing Windows 7 the laptop had a very comfortable function, when i applied an external display.
When i closed the lid of my notebook, the desktop was shown on my external display (with the native resolution of the external display), so i didn`t have to
switch anything at the Control Panel. In Windows 7, i`m missing this function. I already tried to use the Control Panel, but there are no settings, which fits
with the earlier ones. I can duplicate the display, in order to see my desktop screen at my external display, but with the notebook resolution of 1366 x 768.
If i extend the displays, then there is only the background image at the external display, but this time with the native resolution.
So my question is, how to conifgure Windows to recognize that i closed the lid, and that the desktop screen has to be shown on my external display?
Or do i have to install one of the Toshiba applications, which i had before, that realized this function?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi
Im not a Windows 7 user because I will wait until it will be released offical but I hope I can help you a little bit:
First of all in Power Management you can choose the action what happens if you close the Lid (e. g. sleep, turn off, etc.). This action should be disabled because otherwise the notebook will shut down or something else.
Then I think you have to install the display driver for your notebook. You can try the Vista driver because the most of them are work on Windows 7.
Then you should be able to set the correct screen resolution for external monitor.
A working display driver is important for clone or extends monitors so check this!!

  • External Display No Longer Working (Air & Thunderbolt)

My MacBook Air just decided it no longer wants to work with my external Dell U2711 display via Thunderbolt to DisplayPort cable. Frustrating as this has been working for the past 3 years. Currently running OS X 10.10.2. Have tried PRAM and SMC resets to no avail. Not sure what is going wrong, but looking at the error log it is obviously trying to set it to the wrong resolution "1440 x 900". Previously everything was working great with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. Thoughts?

    Howdy Haknat,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.
If you're still seeing no image on the external display after resetting the SMC and PRAM, then the next step I'd like you to do is to start the device in Safe Mode.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
If you tried all of these steps for your display and the video issues persist, contact Apple technical support or take your Apple computer to the nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

  • Settings for an external display monitor

I'm working with FCP 7 but my screen is small 13.3 and for a person of my age (60) is a litle difficult to work. I would like an external monitor display but I cant afford to buy the Apple 24" display, so I'm looking for an other alternative. I found Viewsonic VX2260WM full HD 22"screen very affordable or maybe Samsung XL2370 23" screen. So I need now some help to setup all the system. I would like to have the possibility to have FCP work space in the big monitor but the preview in my MCP. Please, dear adviser, take in mind, for my age, that I need all the explanation full detailed.
    Many thanks in advance

Thanks Jerry for your advice. I have had for a week a 22" ViewSonic connected with a HDMI Mini Display port adapter. I tried to do my best for the setup of this monitor with 1080p resolution while the MBP 13" was setup to the native resolution 1280X800 but the image at the external display was not good enough as the MBP screen. In any case I have return the ViewSonic because other problems. I'm now looking for an other monitor but I'm not sure what to look for. I need for a bigger work space for Final Cut but with a good quality image. Do you have any advice?

  • T410s External Display and Safely Remove Hardware Problems

I have two problems with my new T410s with Windows 7.  First, I use it with an external display.  It works fine when I set the dispaly settings to Projector Only and set the power settings to Do Nothing When I Close the Lid.  However, when I restart the computer the screen image on the external display is often mis-sized, does not cover the whole screen, and has part of the image cut off.  If I open the lid and change the display setting to computer only, then back to projector only it works fine again.
Any ideas on why it will not hold the proper setting when I turn the computer off?
The second problem is common to both my wife's X201 with Windows 7 and my new T410s.  If you click on Safely Remove Hardware/Eject Mass Storage Device both computers will tell us it is now safe to remove our device.  However, if the device is one of our compact external backup drives the device's light will still be on and the disk will still be spinning, so it seems it cannot really be safe to remove it.  This happens even if we wait a minute after the safely remove indication to see if the external drive shuts down after a short delay - it doesn't!
As a result, my wife and I are shutting down our computers whenever we want to remove an external storage device.  Any comments or ideas would be welcome!

For anyone who is concerned about the "safely remove hardware" issue noted in my original post, I have done more research and found that Windows 7 maintains power to the USB ports after safely remove has been executed in order to allow devices like MP3 players to continue charging after they are safely removed.  Windows XP actually shut off the power to the USB ports and this is what I was used to until I got a new T410s with Windows 7.
This means an external HDD's disk will also keep spinning.  However, the safely remove sequence is SUPPOSED to cause the disk's heads to move away from the disk and return to their at rest position, so there should be no damage to the HDD if it is removed even though the disk is still spinning.
Since I have no way to assure this is happening I am still turning off my computer and making sure the disk has stopped spinning before I remove my USB HDD.
I would appreciate comments from people who know more than me about this issue, especially if my info. above is not correct!

  • 8220 External Display

Up got an 8220 flip phone and installed the BB Desktop Manager.  Manager indicated that software updates to v4.6 were available and I updated.  Now the external display no longer displays the time but my servicer provider's logo.  I have been all through the menus and user guide and cannot find how to change the basic image of the external display.  Any suggestions?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Go into the Application Loader in Desktop Manager and make sure that BlackBerry Attachment Services is loaded.  That will restore your external display clock.  My wife's phone had the same issue after a botched system update.

  • External Display doesn't wake from display sleep

My display is set to sleep after an idle period (computer itself set to not sleep), when I return to the computer and wake the displays the external display most of the time does not "wake" or come back with picture. I need to disconnect the adapter and plug it in again.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

    Guys, please read THIS thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1760586&tstart=0
EVERYONE is experiencing this bug if you're using your new MacBook Pro with an external display. In the thread above, I detail how to fix it without having to unplug the DisplayPort adapter.
    The symptoms you're experiencing are:
1.) Bizarre interference all over the external display when either a) waking your notebook from sleep, or b) turning screen on if the screen is set to turn off after x minutes.
2.) External display not actually turning on at all after either a) waking your notebook from sleep, or b) turning screen on if the screen is set to turn off after x minutes.
The fix is listed in the above thread. It's only a temporary workaround, and Apple REALLY needs to address this issue ASAP.

  • Disconnect+reconnect external display = washed out image

    hi guys
I need some expert help on this. Using a Dell E178 WFP external display on my 2010 Macbook Pro via mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter. This display has no EDID it seems so I use SwitchResX to create the necessary resolution override (1440x900). SwitchResX has nothing such as daemons or helpers installed on top, so this boils down to graphics drivers.
My problem: When I reboot the machine, the display has the necessary brightness, contrast, and colour balance. If I unplug the display, wait a sec, then plug it back in, the image comes up very bright and washed out, and I can't get a "true" black out of the display.
What this isn't: I have a ColorSync profile, and make sure it is successfullly loaded, i.e. I go through the trouble of opening up system preferences>displays>color to make sure it reloads. This is not a ColorSync problem. It is not the 2.2 vs 1.8 gamma problem either. Ctrl+shift+eject does not fix it. Creating a new colour profile does not fix it either. The usual SMC, permissions, safe boot, etc tricks don't work either.
Apple engineers have sent me a copy of TimingSnoop but were baffled by the display having a "fake" EDID (when run without SwitchResX TS detects no EDID at all). Since I refused to roll back my entire system to 10.6.4 or uninstall SwitchResX (it does not interfere??) they closed the bug stating "insufficient information".
10.6.4 did not have this problem, and my hardware is perfectly fine.
Rolling back the graphics to 10.6.4 fixes this issue (but creates other issues)
I'm looking for information on this. Has anyone had the same happen? Is it confined to sans-EDID displays?
Have googled a lot but I'm running out of search terms... Anything could be of help?
    Thanks in advance.

Again, this is not the gamma problem that's fixed by just opening the display preferences and resetting the colour profile.
This seems to be somehow related to the display's EDID and the video adapter (Nvidia) not resetting properly when first unplugged and then plugged back in. My support request with Apple is more than a year old in total now and replies have been trickling but all of them add little (if anything at all) to a fix.
My particular problem is finding these "a lot of" people who are experiencing this problem. Everyone I've seen so far talks about the gamma/colours problem, never about the brightness and reboot. So yours is the first instance of someone having exactly the same problem. Hopefully we can find more people? Do you know where I should be looking?
Another idea I've had is to possibly talk to the OSX86 community? If Apple are not interesting in issuing a fix for this, maybe someone else has done some work? After reviewing Apple's code (at least that part which is made public) I'm pretty convinced this is in Nvidia's territory, and that gives me very little hope..
I'm interested to know if this has been fixed on Lion at all..? Ideas?

  • Images in Photoshop and Lightroom not matching on external display

On my external display the same image viewed in Photoshop and Lightroom is diplayed differently.
    My set up:
Macbook pro running Mountain Lion (10.8.4), DVI connected NEC Spectraview 271. Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 5. Both displays calibrated using Spectraview 5 software and an Eye one pro puck. Photoshop working space is Prophoto RGB and is set to preserve embedded profiles. I'm using Andrew Rodney's and Bill Atkinson's test images to try and figure this out.
    Behaviour:
With the same image displayed in Lightroom and Photoshop on the Macbook screen they match perfectly. If I drag the Lightroom window across to the NEC it changes (as you would expect - richer colours & higher contrast). If I drag the Photoshop image across to the NEC it also changes but no longer matches the Lightroom image (cooler colours).
So, I don't really know whether Photoshop or Lightroom is displaying correctly, and whether they or the OS are to blame. I had assumed it was Lightroom as the image is more pleasing but this obviously isn't necessarily the case. What is clear is that somewhere there is a difference between how Lightroom and Photoshop are converting the image numbers for monitor display on the NEC.
Does anyone know how to find out what display profile Lightroom and Photoshop are using?
Is it possible they are both using the same profile but one is not using the NEC hardware calibration? (Seems unlikely as I assume it would be impossible for the NEC to be using different internal look up tables at the same time)
Could the OS be tripping up one and not the other in some way?
Could the X-rite software (which I don't use but is installed) somehow be interfering?
Anybody able to shed some light?
    Thanks for any help,
    Tom

I'm having trouble with Lightroom 5 soft proofing with reds too.  To rid my propossed print of a gamut warning I must totally desaturate or change my paper profile to glossy (or both).  This is odd because my monitor is calibrated, I'm using the correct paper profiles etc and when I ignore the gamut warning my prints are looking good. This isn't helpful to you but at least your not alone....
