Syncing a pair of OSX Lion Servers in different locations

Hi Folks,
I have 8+ TB of data sitting on various hard drives (yes I know its nuts).  I want to purchase a pair of Mac Mini Lion Servers with the Promise Pegasus 12TB (6x2TB) R6 RAID Systems on each and load all of the data on both of them and then put them in differnet locations and have them sync/backup the files between them via the internet.
Are there provisions in Lion Server that will let you sync/backup the files between two Lion Servers automatically?
Thanks!
Mike Pappas

I hope you plan to do the initial sync locally
There is no official Apple provided approach to do this, but there are various ideas you could consider. Firstly you are going to need to organise some means for the two servers to be able to communicate with each other over the Internet. A site-to-site hardware based VPN providing a permenant connection would be the easiest and most reliable.
Secondly, you will need to use some software on each server. A common tool for syncing two computer volumes is Rsync see http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man1/rsync.1.html
Many Mac backup utilities have a similar capability to backup to a remote host. Some use their own protocol for doing this e.g. Retrospect, some use standard FTP, some rely on you first logging in to the remote file server so it is available on your desktop.
Another different approach you could consider would be to use a pair of NetGear ReadyNAS boxes. These are self-contained 'servers' although not ideal for use for Mac OS X network home directories. NetGear provide an add-on service to synchronise two (or more) ReadyNAS boxes. See http://www.netgear.co.uk/business/products/software/readyNAS-replicate/default.a spx this also does all the hardwork of letting both ReadyNAS boxes find each other without having to setup a VPN system.

  • TACACs servers in different locations

Is it possible to have a switch/ router configured for  a 2 x Tacacs servers in  different locations. They are not clustered, they are on the same network, but different domains and in different countries and use different login credentials

You can configure multiple ACS in your switches and routers. It doesn't matter where these servers are located as long they are reachable by the AAA-client. If both servers work with different credentials I would configure them with different prompts so that the admin can see which server is asked.

  • I've reinstalled my MacBook Pro (OSX Lion) using a different apple ID, and now I can't install any iLife apps. In the app store it comes up with "Accept" and then tells me It can't accept from my user ID. How can I fix this or get iLife back?

Mostly explained in the title. My dad gave me his MacBook, and I went ahead and wiped all of his stuff by using the recovery partition to wipe/reinstall OSX Lion. In the setup I used a new apple ID and now I can't get iLife apps. I'm relatively new to how apple works its purchases, so I'm not sure what's up. Is it that my computer has a unique ID set to the first apple ID used on it, and if so, how can I get this reset to my ID? I'm planning to get an iPhone 5 soon so I'd like to be able to use photo stream with iPhoto and try out Guitar Band.
    Any help is much appreciated.

  • OSX Lion Server/Clients TimeMachine Location

    Dear Community,
I have a problem with Timemachine for OSX Lion Server on a MacMini and hope you can help me out. I have an attached TB drive (Pegasus R6, RAID5) and set up TM sharing for the clients of my small workgroup to this drive. The Backup folder location on the server is /Volumes/Backup-Volume/Shared\ Items/Backups. Everything fine so far, clients can backup into that folder with TM sparsebundles.
My Problem is that when switching "on" TM Backup for the Server itself, I am able to choose the Volume "Backup-Volume", but it backs up to /Volumes/Backup-Volume/Backups.backupdb as a folder, not a sparsebundle.
Don't beat me, I know this is just a cosmetic issue, but why ain't it possible to store them in the same folder, with an equivalent type of structure (sparsebundle/folder). I like to have my system clean and don't like to search on different locations for my backups.
Does anybody know a workaround to manually set the location for Backups, either for clients or server. I don't care which folder it actually is, /Volumes/Backup-Volume/Shared\ Items/Backups/xxx.sparsebundle or /Volumes/Backup-Volume/Backups.backupdb/..., both are fine but it should be consistent.
A different question in this context: If this works out, I will set the HDDs the following way:
    Pegasus:
2*2TB RAID 0 as Share Point "Data-Volume" for fast access, backuped
4*2TB RAID 5 as Share Point "Backup-Volume" as the name indicates for backups :-)
    Mac Mini:
    1*500 GB for OS, backuped
1*500 GB as Share Point "Scratch-Volume" not backuped
    Any objections regarding this setup?
    Thanks, Alex

When you say 'manage', what do you mean?
If you're talking directory services where you're just sorting account credentials that clients use to authenticate, then... oh several thousand... or tens of thousands, because the server is only involved when a user logs in - it validates the user's credentials and passes back details about the user's account.
However, if the user's home directories are also on the server (so the client mounts the user's home directory when they log in) well now you have a file sharing component, and network bandwidth requirements when the user logs in, etc.
Assuming you have 100 active users and a perfect gigabit network (which never, ever happens) then each user is going to get an average of 10mpbs to the server (and to their home directory, for opening/saving files, etc.). Double that to 200 users and you're down to 5mbps each. Consider that most networks never work at more than about 50% efficiency (due to protocol overheads, etc.) and you're down to 2-3mpbs each. That could be an issue.
Of course, if you have 200 users in your directory, but there's only ever 10 or 20 people active at a time those numbers change, but the point is there IS no hard number as to how many clients you can support - it's dependent on multiple factors, and way more than you've listed here.
None of that is directly relevant to whether you need a second machine or not. I'd argue that with 80 users you absolutely need another machine, if only for redundancy's sake if not load. Consider the business impact f that server is offline for any reason and you don't have a spare server to carry the load.

  • Syncronise 2 ifs on 2 servers  at different locations????

    munno,
I don't think your question is specific to Database Machine or Exadata at all. The same questions arise any time there are two servers in different time zones that service the same application. The answers are specific to your application and database configuration. If you use the TIMESTAMP data types that include timezone, it shouldn't matter. Unfortunately, most customers aren't using these types. The data in the database shouldn't change based on where the database server is located IMO - the application should insert the data with whatever time it wants/needs.
Changing the time zone on storage cells requires you to run the ipconf utility. Changing the database server time zone is done just like any other Linux server - nothing special there and there are many good doc sources for that that any competent Linux administrator should be able to find if they don't already know.
Hope that directs you to the answers you need.

  • Sync group down? All my agents from different locations offline in same time.

Now is 2014-10-17, 10:22PM EST. Portal shows all my agents from 3 different locations offline. The last sync was done at around 8:30. I've confirmed my agents are online, and they can successfully ping service. Last nite was another nightmare, it look more
than half an hour for a sync cycle. Went back to normal all the suddent at 4am early morning.
    What's going on?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
The service went back to normal at 1AM EST. It was down for 4 hours 30mins. But the service interruption is just too sudden and frequence as I said it went down on Thursday (16th Oct)  night as well.
    Here's my sync group info.
Sync group ID : a0d2cc7b-3a3e-481f-a3b5-be26a373fd5a_Southeast Asia
    Region : Southeast Asia
Date time of the issue : 17th OCT 8:30PM EST to 18th OCT 1:00AM EST
Traing ID : No error found from logs since the sync group didn't work at all. It showed all of my agents offlined. And the sync group showed "Warning"
Please let me know if you need additional info. Thanks.

Check each service is enabled. Try turning syncing off, restarting the mac and turning syncing back on again.

  • Is it possible to have two Paired Lync Standard Edition servers in different domains?

We initially installed Lync in a parent domain with all the users in the child domain. The user's SIP addresses is that of the child domain. We now have a requirement to migrate the server to the same child domain as the users. At the same time we
need to set-up a new server to test some planned network changes. Would it be possible to set-up another Standard Edition Front End Server in the child domain and pair it with the server in the primary domain? We can then migrate the users across as required.

    Hi PanosE,
Yes, you can set up another Standard Edition Server in child domain and then deploy pool pairing.
You need to deploy a new Front End Pool for the new Standard Edition Server.
A similar case for your reference.

  • Will OSX Lion remember my different display setups?

I have a projector that I plug into at work and then at home I have an external display. I set these monitors up differently (e.g. Projector is the second monitor and my external screen at home is set up as the primary monitor) Will I have to go to the settings and re-configure this every time that I swap between the monitor at home and the projector at work?
    Thanks for your help.

The only active thing I see on that page is the banner near the top which keeps changing: "For the cat pictures", "For the poet", etc. Do you not see that? I did not see any link for "Home". Try these pages:

Incidentally, it seems to me that you are using Mountain LIon, not Lion. Mac OS 10.8 is Mountain Lion.

UPDATE 2: I'm having this issue both on my iMac and my Macbook, so I suppose it's a lion bug and not simply something related to something that went wrong during the update (permissions or something like this). It's both in 10.7 and 10.7.1.
I'm going to try on my wife's Macbook to see if it's something related to some software or setting I'm using; in the meanwhile, can someone out there try to reproduce this issue? Just open textedit and change the network location from the menu bar (you should create one other than "automatic" for  "locations" to show up just below "dock"): at this point you should get the spinning ball and then a window telling you that textedit just crashed. Try to do a couple of times if it doesn't crash the first one.
BTW I noticed that textedit doesn't crash if you have the network preference pane open and active ("system preferences" showed on the menu bar) and change the location from the menu bar.
I think I'm going to give a call to Applecare to see if there's some plan to get this corrected in some next update.

  • CUCM servers in different locations - possible?

    Hello
This may be a simple question but I've been asked to investigate it.
We have a CUCM version 9.1.1.10000-11 set up comprising :-
    1 x Publisher
    2 x Subscribers
    1 x TFTP server
    2 x Unity servers
    2 x Presence servers
They are all currently located in two racks in a comms room in our Frankfurt office.
Is it possible to move half of them to another location to give us a redundancy scenario? Or do they need to be in the same place for some reason?
If they can be moved is it just a case of making sure the IP addresses are valid in each location or that the config is re-done to reflect the new IP addresses of the moved servers?
    Thanks

Yes, review the guidelines for CoW in the SRND for the CUCM server and the CUC HA design guide to consider the BW and RTT between sites that is required to split them over a WAN.

Call Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. For Lion you'll get a redemptions code via e-mail and need to DL from the Mac Apple Store (requires SL 10.6.6+).

  • How do I sync iMessage on iOS with Messages on OSX Lion?

This morning, an Update for Messages on OSX was announced.
I just downloaded the Beta and it is running quite well.
    There is one last question!
How do you sync iMessage on iOS with Messages on OSX Lion.
    Example:
I'm texting with Jana on my Mac - but I can't see this conversation on my iPhone / iPad even tho´ the email adress is added in my "iMessages-Settings" on iPhone/iPad.
I also can't start a conversation on my iOS devices and continue them on my Mac.
Anybody out there knowing what to do?
    Best regards from Germany.

    Hi,
I contacted my son on his iPhone by his number.
He did not have his email linked to his Apple ID
When he did that he could message me with that ID rather then the phone number.

  • I can't sync my contacts to my mac (BB 9900, OSX Lion, Latest desktop software for mac installed)

Hi, I have a new blackberry bold 9900, the latest operating system for Apple (OSX Lion), the latest update on my desktop software and the latest update on my BB. However, I am only able to sync 37 of my contacts to Address Book on my mac, and I want to sync all 250+. I am not sure why this is.
Also for some reason, my new contacts are being saved to my googlemail contact list, although i have never specified this. Is there a way to stop this, and is there a way to change the contacts that are already saved on my googlemail list to my Desktop list?
thank you for your help in advance....

    Hey All,
DBJohnson - The Forget Device option removes all the synchronization history that is associated with that BlackBerry so if there was a corruption in the synchronization folder it would be cleared and fixed.
rubenmarcano - How many contacts are setup on the Mac Address Book?  Do you 2 different Address Books on the BlackBerry?  To find this information, go into Contacts on the BlackBerry and press the menu key and select Options and it will list 2 Contact lists.  IF there is 2, that can cause the problem since BlackBerry Desktop Software will only synchronize with 1 contact list.  I look forward to your reply.
Joycetz - Did you sync not work from BlackBerry to Mac or vice versa?  Also are you using Outlook or Mac Address Book or Entourage?

icloud only give you a bit of free storage if you use more you have to pay
