Syncronizing your files for safekeeping

Well not really, but I've seen this type of post here and
heard it so many times that I never wanted to be the victim of a
crashed hard drive, or corrupt files.
The problem that we run into with Captivate is that it
doesn't function very well when you're working from a network
share, but if you work locally, you're walking on thin ice in terms
of recovery if your files become corrupt or your drive crashes.
I've been using SyncToy from Microsoft the past few weeks and it's
pretty simple. Hopefully this doens't sound too much like a
Microsoft commercial here, LOL. Just trying to help out some of my
fellow Captivators proactively.
Read more and download it at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/synctoy.mspx.
It took me about 2 minutes to set up a network folder (that
gets backed up by our fine IT staff on a nightly basis) and used
SyncToy to make sure that everything in my "My Captivate Projects"
including CP's, SWF's, all the image/audio/video assests, were
copied out to a folder on the network at the click of a button.
BTW, it's FREE! :)
Happy Captivating!

Actually I
was kidding - well, a cross between kidding and serious - or
I started to. In any case there was to be more to my message when
things got nuts around here between phones ringing and lost
broadband connections . . . and instead of hitting the "preview"
button, I somehow hit "Reply".
LONG STORY
Still, I figured it didn't go through anyway because my
connection appeared to have been broken - for the 139th time today
- but apparently the cable failed after, not before.
Just "one of those days". Hope there is a 'no harm no foul"
rule in place. Sorry Mike... too bad, it could have been cute and
ended up a troll. ;^)

  • WARNING POST: New Windows 10 scam will encrypt your files for ransom

This is not Lenovo specific but a Windows 10 exploit going around hitting upgraders as I read it. None the less it is clear one must be careful in what they run and are downloading during the process. I am not clear where this is coming from (email, website etc) but be very careful for most ti will be a bad experience if you are a victime. http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-scam-email-will-encrypt-your-files-for-ransom/?tag=nl.e539&s_cid=e539&ttag=e539&ftag=TRE17cfd61

Which computer? There is a label on the bottom.

  • Please check your files for this UTSCSI.EXE

    I am researching O23 - Service: CLCV0 (UTSCSI) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\UTSCSI.EXE
Specifically CLCVO as my computer is doing funky things. I came across this file after running Malware and hijack this. So I started googling this am to see what it was. I am not suggesting anything, but after reading about 60 Hijack this scans, I found a common thread of software, Itunes and Ipod. Now, maybe there are just alot of people who have this software, I dont know. I know my problems started after this last update when the Ipod no longer worked.
Usually this file has been associated with a mass device storage unit like a stick. I know from past scans usually a virus attacks the SCSI, which is why I started digging into this.
For those of you who know where to find this file, can you report back here if you have this as well and any anomalies with your computer? Thanks - just trying to get to the bottom of this file

Hi Chris, thanks for your response. I did indeed see post in regards to the mass storage devices or thumb drives. However, I have not used one of these. It was after reading posts like this that I started tracking what storage devices I have. I do have an external drive, but this file was not there when I installed this drive.
Once I zeroed in on the 2 items I have, the Ipod and the external drive, I started looking for files to see if there was a correlation related to the 2 items. That led me here

  • Tags for bookmarks, what file in the Fox profile folder works with the tags? I'm sure it's not in places.sqlite -- I want to save the "tags" file for safekeeping.

    Tags for bookmarks ...

The tags are stored in places.sqlite in the Tags folder and are also stored in a JSON backup.<br />
So you can use a JSON backup to have a copy.

  • So you want to get your files out of Aperture? Simple yet scary solution.

To remove your files from Aperture try this.
Select files you want to remove.
    Delete them, yes delete them.
Go directly to trash and double click. Aperture folder in trash contains all of your deleted files and you can remove them all at once.
Please try this with a few non essential files at first and never empty the trash from the finder during this operation. I did this with 24 files at the Apple Store and it worked fine but make sure it works before you commit large numbers of essential files.
I want to say that I am very excited about the possibility of fully functional Aperture as advertised. For me this program is currently miles from that point but rest assured when it gets there I wil buy it!

In reading earlier posts there were several comments from folks who wanted to back ENTIRELY out of Aperture and from the discussions I surmise that some had commited whole libraries of images before testing the product.
So what good the project export when you want to quit entirely?
Let's say you have a studio and have been cataloging your files for years in folders by job number, client, and keyword. That you have say 6TB of images easily accessed by no software other than your own internal hard drive. That Aperture comes along and wants you to change your system because Apple says so.
I tested the software before buying and it falls short in so many areas as to be unusable for me.
If and when it's fixed I will buy save two hours and it will be paid for.

  • Backing Up your files and HD content.

Just wondered what program everyone was using to back up there files and HD. I tried iBackup but as I have so much music on my MBP it was taking ages to do it. But, then after time if I had added 2 more cd albums to my iTunes then tried to back it up again I had to delete my previous back up and start over. Not the best.
Does anyone know if there is a Back Up program that when you go to Back Up your files for a second time, it just adds the ones missing from your previous back up?
Would love to know as I have already been stung once with my previous PowerBook.
    Thanks all..

Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.

  • Packaging files for service providers in Illustrator CS3 necessary?

    Hi, i need to
package my files in Illustrator for a service provider
tonight in the same fashion one would do
in InDesign for a service provider.
But Illustrator does not have 'File->package.'
From what I can see I might go to the links palette
and use that to embed images?
But i was also told that you usually don't want to embed
Well, i'm obviously confused, anyone who can point me in the
right direction, that would much appreciated,
    Thankyou.

Yeah, there's no easy way to package up the fonts unless you use Art Files or Scoop. From "Find Font..." you can then go to the finder and search for the fonts you've used. If it's only a couple, it's not too bad. Just make sure you get the right versions... (I know I have about 20 faces of Futura...)
If the service provider isn't going to be making any changes to the copy, then there is really no reason not to outline the fonts.
Outlining fonts changes them from text to shapes, treating them just like any other shape in your file, removing your ability to edit text (so it should be one of the last steps in your pre-flighting of a file) and it guarantees that what you send the printer is what you'll get back.
Keep a live (not outlined) copy of all your files for future use and send the printer an outlined version.
Or, if this is something you're going to be doing a lot of, and you don't want to outline the fonts, look into Art Files or Scoop. I know Art Files is only like $50, and it works great.

  • How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?

How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?  Each time I try, the video will not play from the external hard drive.

Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original.  That should get the original video file exported.  Try to export one to the Desktop first and open it with Quicktime Player.  If all goes well export the rest to a folder on the EHD. How is the EHD formatted?  It should be OS X Extended (journaled).

  • Export a CS3 InD .inx file in your CS2 for my CS?  Please?

it is my understanding that to open an .inx file from CS3 in CS it must first be opened and exported as an .inx in CS2.  Correct?  If so, is there anyone out there with CS2 who would be willing to export a file for me?  I greatly appreciate your help!
Also, this process is absolutely silly.  SILLY.

Also, this process is absolutely silly.  SILLY.
Correct. Downgrading a document is generally a bad idea -- you have no control over what gets converted and what gets to be left out. I, for one, have never ever used it, so for my part Adobe could have spared them the headache and left the entire function out.
(I did enjoy creating new documents from scratch, writing an INX and importing that. Sadly, IDML -- its Next Gen successor -- is too complicated for a quick-and-dirty job.)

Does any one know how to attach a document from your mail, while you are already in your e-mail, meaning not having to look for your file first and then open the e-mail.

Good question - and one that a lot of (business) people would like solved!
Your question prompted me to do some research, and I found this workaround posted by Scott Grossberg:
His solution actually addresses a second problem too - how to attach a document when replying to an email message. In your case you may not need to consider the "reply" aspect - but if not right now, it'll come in useful someday!
I've pasted it verbatim - if it works for you (it does for me) then all credit goes to Scott for solving the problem. There's just one thing I'd add to his solution: you will probably want to rename the message, as by default Goodreader gives it the Subject line: Mail with GoodReader attachments.
    THE GOODREADER OPTION
    1.  CREATE the document you want to send.
    2.  SAVE it to GoodReader (this will require you to buy and install the app).
    3.  Go to your email and OPEN the email thread to which you want to Reply and attach your file.
    4.  COMPOSE your Reply.
    5.  DOUBLE TAP the message.
    6.  TAP SELECT ALL. This will copy the entire email thread.
    7.  OPEN GOODREADER on the iPad and go to the file you want to send as part of your Reply.
    8.  At the bottom of the GoodReader screen you will see an EXPORT icon (it looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing to the right).
    9.  TAP the Export button.
    10.  TAP EMAIL FILE. Depending on your needs, tap either SEND FILE “AS IS” or “FLATTEN ANNOTATIONS.” This will open a compose message screen with the chosen document already attached.
    11.  TAP in the body of the email screen. TAP PASTE. This will place your composed Reply and the prior email thread into the message.
    12.  ENTER the Recipients’ names in the TO: field of your message.
    13.  SEND your email Reply.
The modified version (= when composing a new message rather than a reply):
1 Make sure that the doc you want to attach is saved in GoodReader
2 In the message you are composing, double tap, select all, and then copy.
3 Open GoodReader and select the file you want to attach
4 Select the export button at the bottom of screen
    5 Select e-mail file
6 Position cursor in body of the email message, tap and paste. You may want to delete the "sent from GoodReader" text that precedes the attachment.
7 Rename your message (as by default it will be Mail with GoodReader attachments)
8 Add the recipient's address in the To field.
Hope this helps! All thanks to Scott for this workaround.

  • "Your bootable USB drive could not be created" "Boot Camp only supports 64-bit Windows installation on this platform. Please use an ISO file for 64-bit Windows installation."

I try to install windows7 system on my macbook air, which version is 10.8.5. When I open the bootcamp, it let me to choose a windows ISO image, which I've already downloaded from this website: http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325 /, it also asked me to select a USB drive, which is kingston that has 8GB. Then when I clicked "continue", it said that "Your bootable USB drive could not be created" "Boot Camp only supports 64-bit Windows installation on this platform. Please use an ISO file for 64-bit Windows installation." But actually the ISO image I downloaded is 64-bit windows7. I don't know why this would happen. Could someone help me please!!

    Thanks for your feedbakc Kiranjj!
I identified the reason to be that the W8 installation file didn't download completely from a Mac OS-device. I downloaded from another Win-device and the moved the installation file with a USB-stick and then everything worked diectly! But thanks anyway.

  • You cannot change your default location of "Creative Cloud Files" for sync from desktop

So, I'm finding that I am restricted from moving the "Creative Cloud Files" container (for syncing to the cloud from my desktop). It is bound to C:Users/Name and will not move.
This is very saddening and seems like an elementary function that should be included.
I do not want to store things on my small SSD C: drive -- thanks.
    Am I missing something here?

    Hi Mark,
As per Adobe F.A.Q, I would like to state that :http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.html
"Your files remain on your local hard drive. You can also choose to take advantage of the ability to synchronize your local files with your Creative Cloud storage. Even if you choose to sync your files to Creative Cloud, you will always have a local copy of your files."
There are some workarounds, it might work out, you can try it : It is for windows
First, stop the sync and exit the app ( right-click on the Connection icon and click Turn Sync Off, right-click again and choose Exit )
Go to “C:\Users\your user name” folder and locate Creative Cloud Files folder
Move the folder to a different location ( e.g. “D:\Data\Creative Files” ) and make sure that you move complete Creative Cloud Files folder
Run cmd.exe in admin privileges ( type cmd in Start menu, right click on cmd and select Run as administrator )
    Type following:
    mklink /J “C:\Users\your_user_name\Creative Cloud Folder” “D:\Data\Creative Files”
You should receive message that the junction is created ( refer to this guide if you need more help:Complete Guide to Symbolic Links (symlinks) on Windows or Linux )
Now to test it BEFORE you turn on the Connection app simply copy something to “D:\Data\Creative Files” folder, than go to Creative Cloud Files folder in your users folder and you should see the file you copied
If you are able to see the file, all you have to do is to start the Connection app! Hooray!
This guide should work for Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Heat up the bottom rubber mat with a hairdryer for 5-10 minutes to loosen the adhesive, then pull the rubber mat away from the bottom metal plate carefully.
Then use a screwdriver to remove the 10-12 screws to open up the case.
