System becomes unusable after a few hours?

Hey archers,
I've been on arch for about 2 months now and didn't start having problems until maybe 3 weeks ago.  After a few hours of use, everything will completely (and suddenly) become really unresponsive: even an uncached ls or man takes upwards of 15-30 seconds.  Using strace, I saw the commands were stalling on IO operations (getdent64 for example), so I came to suspect my disk.  The odd thing is, it completely resolves itself upon reboot, at least until I leave the computer on for a few more hours.
About my disk: it's a Crucial 64GB SSD, / and /home are mounted with noatime and both partitions are at about 65% capacity.  I profiled the disk using dd before and after reboot the most recent time it became unresponsive:
Before power cycle:
andy@vulpes ~ $ dd if=/dev/zero of=temp bs=1M count=256
256+0 records in
256+0 records out
268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 214.902 s, 1.2 MB/s
andy@vulpes ~ $ sudo -i
Password:
[root@vulpes ~]# echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
[root@vulpes ~]# logout
andy@vulpes ~ $ dd if=temp of=/dev/null bs=1M count=256
256+0 records in
256+0 records out
268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 426.4 s, 630 kB/s
After power cycle:
andy@vulpes ~ $ dd if=/dev/zero of=temp bs=1M count=256
256+0 records in
256+0 records out
268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 3.01267 s, 89.1 MB/s
andy@vulpes ~ $ sudo -i
[root@vulpes ~]# echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
[root@vulpes ~]# logout
andy@vulpes ~ $ dd if=temp of=/dev/null bs=1M count=256
256+0 records in
256+0 records out
268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 1.22105 s, 220 MB/s
Notice the magnitude difference in throughput speeds (Read 630 kB/s vs. 220 MB/s, Write: 1.2 MB/s vs. 89.1 MB/s), and this doesn't even really cover the disk latency I'm seeing.
Anyone seen anything like this, or have any ideas on how to fix it/debug it more?  The fact that it fixes itself after power cycle makes me think it isn't the disk itself, but who knows: a power cycle cycles the disk to some extent too (remount, clear caches, etc.).  My other thought is that it might be a kernel upgrade, but I don't remember if this started happening after I upgraded my kernel or not.  If it matters, I started using Gnome 3 about a week before this started happening.  I don't have much linux profiling-fu, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I ran a fsck -n and it showed I had errors so I ran shutdown -Fr now to force a check... three times.  Most of the errors have been fixed, but fsck is still reporting errors:

  • Audio gets choppy and becomes unusable after a few weeks of uptime

Hi, I am dying to know if anyone else sees this problem.  I'm running a fully-loaded 2011 iMac (still the latest model as of this writing) and it stays up 24x7 (it's a work machine that is constantly compiling and testing software).  I listen to music, mainly using Spotify, during the day.  Parallels, VPN Tracker, Skype, and Chrome is always on as well.
After 20-30 days, the audio, across the board, starts to get choppy (music, Skype, even system sounds).  After a day or so, it eventually gets to where the choppiness is so bad that audio is completely unusable.  The only thing that I've found that fixes it is a reboot.  Sigh...  I've tried closing every application, plugging and unplugging the speakers, and chanting, and nothing but rebooting helps.  As far as I can tell, there is no way to "restart" the audio system specifically.
Anyone else being annoyed by this problem?

This is a puzzle alright. A SMC Reset can clear problems of no sound but I don't think that is what's happening here. Perhaps using a system managenent Application like OnyX would keep the conflicting signals from becoming a problem.

  • Why Does CC or Apps in CC become unusable after a few weeks or Months?

Seem that ever since Adobe has forced many of its users to use CC and CC Apps that they stop working or will not upgrade after a few weeks to a month or two. ADobe needs to fix this really annoying problem that generally requires uninstalling and reinstalling CC and most or all the the apps that are in my cc folder. Come on Adobe own up to it and fix it!!! This has been a problem on Win7, Win8 and nowWin 8.1.
Thank you, a very annoyed user.

Can you mention the exact version of InDesign CC that you are using.
Also can you mention what steps you are performing that makes this issue come up. That will be helpful for us in reproducing the issue internally and investigating it further.

  • IPhone 3GS becomes sluggish after a few hours

    Hi,
have my 3GS since one month now (it's a week 31) and now experiencing the problem that after some hours of usage/standby the iPhone becomes slugglish. This means that i.e. after pressing the home button to wake it up from standby it takes the phone about five seconds to turn the screen on. Using the iPhone is much more slower as well. When putting the iPhone back to sleep mode it will again take about five seconds when waking it up the next time.
I can fix this by rebooting the phone and the system will stay fine for about 24 hours. Then the error comes back. Having this since two days now. There was no software installed or updated since then.
    Anyone experiencing similar issues?
    Thanks

Thanks. However, I have never done so in the past and did not experience the problem.
BTW: Maybe other users are having the same problem as well, just found his here on the board: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2147538&tstart=0
...and in another forum: http://modmyi.com/forums/general-iphone-chat/674171-home-button-lockscreen-delay .html
At least the ones from the other forum are having problems with connecting to wifi in those situations as well.

  • Trackpad becomes unusable after about an hour

II've recently been having a problem with the built in trackpad on MacBook Pro. Started one day randomly with the trackpad lagging in the middle of the pad. Chatted to a apple worker and started up in safe mode and did a PRAM reset, both helped but didn't fix the problem, made an appointment for a well later and in the time it became unusable. So shut down and left on my desk for a few day, anyway the day of the appointment I boot it up before I leave and everything is perfectly fine. So I decide to cancel the appointment. That was almost a week ago and its started up again. Boots up just fine, alls fine until about 1-2 hours in when it begins lagging again, the longer you leave it the more it begins to jump, changing desktops, bringing the menu up, and in the end, needing to shut down and leave for a while. I thought it might be the hardwear, but if it is fine for a while then breaks, I don't know what's wrong with it.

  • My new 2tb time capsule becomes undiscoverable after a few hours, any help?

I just purchased a new 2TB TC this past weekend.  I plugged it in, and have wirelessly hooked up two imacs, a macbook pro, and an apple tv to it.  It is hooked directly to my modem and has replaced my previous router.  The problem I am having is that after about a day, none of the computers can discover it via airport utility or on the network tab.  Any suggestions, because it is really getting annoying having to restart it every morning etc.  How do I make it recognized 24/7?  Thanks!

    Karlotta wrote:
What if we cannot limit to 5 GHz n network only. I have a cell phone that only will use 2.4 ghz network.
    Try this.
Open the manual setup of the TC
Disable the Guest Network if not needed.
Give the 5GHz network a separate name. (even when not needed)
Switch the radio modus of the wireless to "802.11n only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g"
You will reach this option by clicking the drop down menu while holding the option key (alt)
After that, force the supporting station(s) (MacBook Air in your case) to use the 5GHz network name only and connect the smartphone to the 802.11g.
Delete the 2.4GHz network from the list of the "known networks" in the System Settings of the MBAir while the wireless of the Air is switched to OFF
Eventually check the following to optimize your wireless infrastructure. That will ease the things too.
General radio problems in wireless networks based on disturbance from interferences, obstacles in or reflections of the radio beam
The radio beams of a wireless are not Roentgen X-Ray based and therefore obstacles, interferences from other wireless systems or reflections of the radio beam could cause major disturbance of the wireless network and based on this, the data stream in the network.
    Possible reasons of wireless problems:
Obstacles like Walls, magnetic fields from live high voltage lines, antenna cable or insufficient shielded speaker systems. Metal frames or plating, furniture, bundled water pipes, dry construction plaster walls*, Humans* and much more.
Interferences from other radio equipment like Bluetooth, cordless phones, neighborhood WiFi, cordless speakers, cordless doorbells, intercoms, ptt units, baby phone's, surveillance and alarm systems, commercial weather radar, some military equipment and so on.
*) Water is a big bar for radio. Plastered dry construction walls and Humans contain a lot of water.
One of the above named possible reasons or any combination can cause major annoyance due to unwanted network traffic or packet collisions and could at last force stations to disassociate from the network or get disassociated by access point (router) due to time out or signal loss.
User experience: Heavy fading signal strength, slow and sluggish wireless connection iTunes/Video stream drop, lousy data transfer speed, total connection loss or only time relating disturbances here and there.
    Possible Solutions:
Placement of transmitter. Not flat at the wall. Not in a corner, not on the floor, not behind a furniture, not near of other radio sources e.g. cordless phones. Not near of anything that can reflect radio beams. Best: as high as possible; e.g. Airport Extreme mount on ceiling. Maximum possible line of sight to all stations respectively corners of the home.
    Placement of stations: as obvious
Placement of yourself: If possible not between your Mac' antenna(s) and the transmitter.
Radio interferences: Check that the channel you use have at least a 5 channel gap to the two strongest wireless networks around. If possible use the recommended overlapping free channels for your country for best performance. On 2.4GHz networks -> for US-1,6,11 and for Europe 1,5,9,13. If possible swap to 5GHz 802.11n only and force the stations supporting this to use only 5GHz. Disable 802,11a/b/g wireless if possible. Place cordless phone stations as far away from the router (access point) as possible. Eventually disable all radio transmitting equipment in the house. If the wireless then work better, enable one at the time to see which is the disturbing one. Don't forget leaking microwave ovens. A running faulty microwave may drown your complete wireless network at once and your neighbors WiFi too.

  • A few thoughts and experiences after a few hours using my new ThinkPad E440 with Win 8.1

After waiting 36 days for my new ThinkPad to arrive, I guess I'm just "eh" about it after using it some. Here are some of my thoughts, opinions, and experiences I've had after using it for a few hours... Hope this helps other people.
I should not be surprised because I read all the reviews, but the touch pad really sucks. I hate everything about it, the way it clicks - it's so loud and clunky! - and it's insensitivity (and I adjusted this to be more sensitive). Thank goodness for the track point. I love that thing.
The touchscreen stopped working after a few hours of use. After I rebooted it came back. Is this a bad omen? Or did I inadvertantly turn it off? Is that even possible? I am new to Windows 8 so anything is possible.
The touch screen, when it's working, is not very responsive. It's MUCH LESS responsive than my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android phone or my LG G Pad 8.3 tablet. This is very disappointing.
I ran the hardware scan that is in the Lenovo Solution Center and got a warning under the category "Local Connection Test". I looked at the list of System Events and it's very long. The first application error event name is MpTelemetry. Response is "Not available". The next one is "PnPRequestAdditionalSoftware". Response is "Not available". And the list goes on and on and on for pages. I have no idea what to do about this or what it means.
Also in the Lenovo Solution Center, under Software, there is a Critical Alert that says I never updated Windows. But I did when it prompted me to while it was first booting up and it was updating and installing things. Where it says "To update your operating system, you must run Windows Update", I click on the Launch button and it takes me to Windows Update where it says No Updates are Available. Go figure. It also says there have been 9 Windows updates made to the computer. I guess I'll have to just always ignore that Critical Alert.
In the system tray, it says "ThinkPad OneLink Dock Detached!". I don't have a dock... So, yes, that's true, it is detached.   I'll have to hide that one.
I realize there is a Lenovo Recovery Partition on the hard drive but I would really like to create a set of recovery disks before I start customizing this thing, installing apps, and moving my files over. I can't find anything that tells me how to do it. Under the control panel, there is the Recovery icon. The only choice there for creating recovery media is to create a Recovery Drive, not disks. I'll post a separate item to get information on this.
On the positive side, I have had it in my lap the whole time and it's not gotten too hot for my legs. That's a big improvement on my old Toshiba Satellite Pro.
This locating the Fn key to the left of the CTRL key decision must have been made by someone smoking crack. Why would anyone in their right mind want to do this? We've had the CTRL key on the outer left edge like, FOREVER, why move it now?? This will be something that will take me a long time to adjust to - if I ever do. I use the CTRL a lot for cutting, pasting, and formatting things in Excel and Word. It's going to be a battle. I wonder if any software exists that allows you to redefine the keys? Speaking of location of keys, I keep hitting the Page Down key when I want the Page Up key. I'm used to the Page Up key being above the Page Down key instead of to the left.
After being told here in the forum that the fingerprint reader was not an option in the US I am pleasantly surprised to see one on my new ThinkPad.
I use the right-click on my mouse often. For example, to open a link in a new tab instead of switching to the new URL. For some reason, when I click on the right part of the touch pad when the mouse is located over a link, it just opens the new URL instead of giving me options for opening the URL. I'll have to figure this out.
So anyway, I guess that's more than a few things... hope this is useful to someone...

You can change FN and CTRL key in the BIOS

  • I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the b.u. stops

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Number one is memory. I can tell you that the new Intel systems absolutely love memory, and judging by your pageouts you're way under what it needs. I've installed 2gb in mine, and on numerous occasions I've checked my Activity Monitor and it's been using nearly 1gb. I'd recommend upgrading the memory asap.
Number 2 is programs. How many are you trying to use at once? 512 won't support many. I don't mean to sound like I'm insulting you or anything... not sure if you've been using Mac long or not... but are you closing out programs after using them or just closing the windows?

What operating system version, and do you have any backups of your data off the machine? TimeMachine? Option Key bootable clones? Storage? DVD's?
A reinstall of the operating system may be in order as a last resort, so if any of these steps on these links get you into the machine, make sure to backup your personal data (Music, Pictures, Documents, Movies) off the machine to a non-encrypted  powered external drive regular storage drive (not TimeMachine as it might be corrupted too) and disconnect as soon as possible.
Good Luck and report back all what you tried.
Also report what change occured before this tragedy happened, was there a  Software Update? A EFI firmware update? Etc.

  • Why does my IPod shuffle stop after a few hours playing on shuffle when it should go for days?

Why does my IPod stop playing after a few hours on shuffle when it should play for days?

A few possibilities...  (Each numbered item is a separate thing to check or try.)
    (1) What does the shuffle's light do when you connect it to USB?
    (2) If the docking cable plug is not fully inserted, it may not have a good connection for charging.  Make sure the docking cable plug is fully inserted into the shuffle's headphones jack, as shown in this document
iPod shuffle (4th generation): Not seen in iTunes
    (3) If there are other USB devices connected to your computer at the same time, try disconnecting other devices (including USB hub) so that the shuffle is the only device connected to a direct USB port, to see if that makes a difference (you can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected if used).
    (4) If you have a USB power adapter (such as from an iPhone, iPad, or other device), that plugs into the wall outlet, as a test, connect the shuffle's docking cable to the adapter and connect the shuffle.  Does it change from a power adapter?
    (5) Some newer Windows PCs (if you use Windows and not a Mac) may have a "feature" that shuts off full power to the USB port when a connected storage device is no longer mounted by the system.  An iPod is a storage device, and after syncing, iTunes unmounts the iPod's disk (if you are using automatic syncing).  If Windows shuts off full power to the USB port, the battery cannot charge.  To see if this is the problem, does the iPod appear in iTunes when it is connected, even though the battery is not charging?  If it does, select the iPod in iTunes so that you see its Summary screen.  There is an option (checkbox) there for Enable disk use.  If it's not already checked, check that box and Apply.  Enabling disk use keeps the iPod's disk mounted continuously, so Windows will keep the USB port at full power (and the battery will charge).  If the iPod now charges, there may be a way to disable this "energy saver" feature in Control Panels, so that you can turn OFF Enable disk use.  NOTE:  When Enable disk use is turned ON, you need to Eject the iPod in iTunes before physically disconnecting it.

  • Skype 7.7 stops working after a few hours

After a few hours maybe 6 hours or so, skype will not let me get on calls. If I try to get on a call skype immediately stops working. I am using Windows 10 and I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it but that has not worked.

It's not a router problem as I explained in my post. If it was a router problem then I wouldn't have the problem everywhere I go. It is an issue with the software.
Then I guess the millions of people running 10.5.7 with no issues are just hallucinating that their machines are working fine?
I'm not trying to belittle your issues; you're certainly having them and I know first hand how annoying an intermittent AirPort issue can be. (In fact, mine was due to an AirPort driver bug that no one else seemed to suffer from.)
The single best diagnostic you could do is take your system running 10.5.7 to an Apple Store, and try using their in-store network.
If your machine performs flawlessly, it may be a router issue.
If your machine has connectivity issues there, it may be a hardware problem with your machine.
There have been numerous people in multiple threads over the years who swore that an update was buggy because things used to work, but returned later to sheepishly admit that they took their machine in, a problem was found and fixed, and now their Mac works flawlessly with the newer software.
But simply reinstalling 10.5.5 in no way means the explanation of how firmware bugs may be at play here is incorrect.
In the context of that explanation, all you've done is possibly reinstall software that asks to add "2 + 3."

  • Gnome-shell and its CPU hog after a few hours of using

(Yeah, I know there was many threads like mine, but most of them are about old bugs or people who have hardware acceleration turned off; I use GeForce G210M and my system is up to date (systemd and all that stuff))
I have to restart Gnome Shell after a few hours, because it starts to constantly use 30% - 40% of CPU.
Is there any patch for this?
Are there any debug tools to see if it's not some badly written extension? I use only a few of them, so I guess that's not the problem.
I already use ulatency and verynice. Would it be safe to set gnome-shell as 'runawayexe'? IDK if it'd restart itself. Now I have it in goodexe.

Are you sure it is the Gnome Shell? (Try running htop and monitoring the processes)
Try disabling all your extensions and re-enabling them one by one to see if any have memory issues.
Another possible issue would be extensions that cause updates all the time.  For example the netspeed extension constantly updates with your internet speed.

  • HP software loses connection to printer after a few hours

I have been having this problem since I bought my HP Deskjet 3052A a few months ago.  There is a program in my Startup folder called "Monitor Ink Alerts - HP Deskjet 3050A J611 Series (Network)."  It works fine when I start up my PC, but invariably after a few hours, I will get a message (and an icon in the system tray) saying that it has lost connection to the printer (I do not have the exact message at this time).  The message also says that wireless scanning is not available.  At that point, my PC will not print to the printer, although wireless devices using HP ePrint still are able to print.  Restarting the PC will fix the error.  I have set the printer up with a static IP address to try and fix the issue, but it continues to reoccur.
My PC is a Dell Dimension E520 running Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 3.  It is connected via network cable to my Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router model WNDR3700.  The printer is connected via wireless to the same router.

I too have this problem and for no apparent reason.  The only thing I can link it to is, if I print a letter and then go into mail merge to print the envelope it allows me to print the envelope(s) but then loses the wireless connection when I go back into trying to print letters.
It really is a pain because I have to stop what I am doing and spend time going through the set up procedure again. Not difficult (except for the faff of having to take the printer to the pc and connecting the USB again) but time consuming and very disruptive to my working day.
I have another problem with printing a document and getting gobblygook, but that's for another thread and I will search for this.
