Systemd and recovery boot

I do keep hitting these little systemd issues, but google hasn't helped.
How do i boot a recovery console using a systemd only boot? I've tried both ro single and systemd.unit=rescue.target on the kernel command line, and whilst in both cases I can see the final message long enough to know that it's recovery mode, it then goes on before I have a chance to actually do anything to (I assume) continue trying to load my DM, resulting in a blank screen with nowhere to go and no way to get there. Obviously because it's now at run level 1 there are no TTYs available to switch to.
Is there a way to get something resembling the old behaviour with systemd where it will either drop to a console, or at the very least wait for me to make a choice?

Sorry it's taken me a couple of days to come back to this, but my day job and experimenting have got in the way.
I copied sulogin in to /sbin and it made no difference at all, so on to step two, using initramfs, which is getting closer, particularly using the break point.
However, nothing here yet provides a true recovery system, which is what I long for. At the moment we are restricted to either a recovery system than will allow us to change system config files, or a chroot environment from a live boot that will let us modify the system generally, but nothing compares to init for system recovery where you can get both with a recovery boot.
For now, and since I already have a clonezilla ISO conigured in grub for boot, I may make a modified Arch ISO that I can boot to with the full chroot set up at login, but it would be far better to be able to boot the existing system to a recovery tty without the extraneous stuff starting. Surely rescue.service or emergency.service should stop all other *.services  running, thus giving us a true recovery option.

  • Can't install Rescue and Recovery on T410

Hi, I recently bought a reconditioned Lenovo T410 and have pretty limited technical knowledge, so I took the helpful advice of another member on the forum to perform certain actions to get myself set up. One of these was to create factory recovery discs using Rescue and Recovery. As this wasn't already installed on the machine, I have downloaded it (tvtvrnr4.52_005en.exe) but it won't install. I am getting the message 'Error 25014 There was an error installing the Rescue and Recovery boot manager. Return code: 6'. Any ideas about how to resolve it or an alternative way or creating recovery discs?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The only chance to perform factory recovery is if you have Lenovo_Recovery partition with several .wim files on that. But it seems they are absent. So contact with Lenovo support in your country and purchase recovery disks.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.3 on Windows 7 64 bit won't install

    Hi,
I had to reinstall my Windows 7 and when I did that I accidentally wiped away the Recovery partition. I didn't think this would be a problem but now I am trying to install Rescue and Recovery 4.3 on Windows 7 64 bit and I keep getting this error
"Error 25014. There was an error installing the Rescue and Recovery boot manager. Return code: 6"
I am wondering why I am getting this error and how I can install Rescue and Recovery 4.3?

    Hi,
can you also specify, how did you installed Win7?
    Using Recovery CDs? or?
Note, that RnR needs to modify the boot loder of Windows and if the access is blocked, due to permissions, then this situation of course will happen.
However, there is also a second option, on how to get RnR installed and this is using a command line installation which will NOT install the RnR partition.
NOTE: the change in the boot loder is needed only for the creation of this RnR partition.
For more info, please read the following RnR manual:

Feel free to ask any other question.

  • Service Partition - Rescue and Recovery installation fails (not enough free space)

Im am aware about  former posts to this subject  on this forum, but they didn't answer all my questions, so I reopened  the subject.
I tried to install "Rescue and Recovery" on T60 with win XP  Pro and got the following message:
'There is not enough free space in the boot sector to install the Rescue and Recovery boot manager'
I followed the   solution in "Rescue and Recovery installation fails") from 08-09-2008 03:03 AM
and  created a hidden partition with Parted Magic but the rescue and recovery still fails with the same message.
Somewhere in the forum I read that the original service partition has a special format and not ntfs.
Could somebody tell me is it true or not ?
How can I rebuild this service partition ?
Do I need special setting, flags there ?
Is it possible  to rebuild this partition without recovery CDs at all ?
Actually I'm wondering to,  about the error message. It is saying '"..There is not enough free space in the boot sector ..." .
Is it possible  that the boot sector is the problem and not the service partition ?
How can I fix that ?
Thanks in advance if somebody helps.

I have a 4-year-old ThinkPad R51. Because I was getting intermittent boot-up error messages--"Rescue and Recovery has encountered a problem and needs to close"--with ver. 4.0, I tried to upgrade to ver. 4.2.  Per instructions, I first removed ver. 4.0 using Windows Control Panel.  Then each attempt to install 4.2 failed with the message: "Error 25025. There is not enough free space on the computer to install or upgrade the Rescue and Recovery environment."  Just before that error message popped up in center-screen, I got a Windows message at lower right saying "You are running out of space on SERVICEV001 (Z:}"  Of course, there was no way I could view partition Z (that I knew of).
Thanks to the helpful messages above, I downloaded Parted Magic (http://partedmagic.com), burned a boot CD per its instructions, and re-booted with that CD.  Using GParted, I saw that my SERVICEV001 partition was merely 590 MB, and 587 MB was in use.  So I reduced my C partition by 500 MB and added 500 MB to the Z partition, raising it to 1090 MB.  Then I was able to re-boot into Windows and the installation of Rescue and Recovery 4.2 was error-free.
Out of curiosity, I again re-booted with the Parted Magic CD to see how much space on the Z partition was taken by the RnR ver. 4.2 installation.  To my surprise, it showed that still only 587 MB was in use, and 503 MB remained unused.
I thank those in this forum whose messages gave me the needed guidance.  And I thanked the author of Parted Magic with a $10 donation, as I hope other users of his open source program will do.

Now, when i try to install RnR 4.3 for win 7 i got this error message "error 25014. There was an error installing the rescue and recovery boot manager. Return code: 6". • Rescue and Recovery 4.5. Rescue media can't boot from FAT32 64GB flash drive.

T530 Windows 7. I did a full (base) backup to a 64GB USB flash drive formatted FAT32. R&R started by indicating “Rescue and Recovery Medium being created” and after a few hours finished the backup. When I click on ‘View all backups’ I can see the backup created. I then tested the flash drive to see if it’s bootable but the screen only shows rapidly moving white font gibberish over black background. I did the same as a test on a 8GB USB flash drive formatted NTFS (I had to stop the backup since 8GB was not enough space) but had no trouble booting from it. Both flash drives have the folders: boot, efi, Preboot, RRbackups, tvtos and files: bootmgr, bootmgr.efi, fcopy.ini. In other words, the only difference seems to be that it works with 8GB NTFS but not with 64GB FAT32. Is that the issue or just coincidence?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The readme file for RNR 4.5.1 states:
    Consideration 7
Unable to boot from a 64 GB USB memory key
When you create rescue media on a 64 GB USB memory key and then boot your computer from the memory
key, an error message is displayed, saying, ?¡ãError loading Operating System.?¡À
To solve the problem, change the 64 GB USB memory key to one with less storage capacity.
    ===
The question is.. is your Flash USB a memory key?
I would reformat  the 64GB to NTFS, then run the Create Rescue Media option onto it.  Then try to boot the USB.
There is another post out here stating on certain USB sticks, you have to PREFORMAT it,  using diskpart command, before using the Create Rescue Media option..

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.5: Boot Environment does not list Backups on USB Drive

    Hello,
I have a fresh installed Windows 7 on a X 230 and am now setting up my backup. The notebook came without an OS so I installed Win7, all drivers and the Thinkvantage Software myself. Then I made a backup with Rescue and Recovery 4.5 to an external USB 3.0 HDD. The Backup is listed in the Windows program, but when I boot to Rescue and Recovery, the backup is not listed.
Since there arent any options I could change during the backup or the recovery, I have no idea what went wrong..
    Thanks!

In the standalone boot of RNR, go to the advanced GUI, chose Restore.  After a few screens, you will see a restore from location, default is Local Hard drive.  This is a drop down list.  USB option is available in the drop down list. The USB must be connected during the standalone boot. If the backup is NOT the same UUID as your system, check the box that says show backups from all systems.
Also read my post dated Nov 22,2011 .  RNR backup reverts to local.  This may not apply to USB backups.

6/ Reset router ( always show “cannot join XX network” unless reset router at least 1 time)
7/ Wifi signal will available after 5 ~10mins,
8/ Face time via iphone4S again, almost no problem….
Suppose it is a compatibility issue of iphone4s and TP-link router?
I already suffered the iphone4S face time drop off issue for more than 2 week…  Hope it can be fixed soon….

I agree with @sabretooth. The connection status showing 100Mbps is only the local Ethernet network speed and since your router uses the Wireless-G technology, then you can get a maximum of 54Mbps for the wireless network speed. This network speed is significant when communicating within the local network of the router but it is still the 10Mbps internet subscription speed that is used when sending and receiving data or information through the internet.
It seems you’re experiencing a dropping connection and it would be better to isolate the issue before buying another router. Connect a computer wired directly to your Arris modem and observe the connection. If connection is good then it will give you a hint that it’s a possible router issue. You can then press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds, power cycle, reconfigure the internet connection and check if the problem persists.

  • Cannot Boot To Windows After Rescue And Recovery

I used the Rescue And Recovery disks (7 disks plus actually recovery cd) on my T42. I received the cd set direct from IBM. I've used the CDs in the past with no issues. This time after following the instructions and completing the restore, I cannot get the computer to boot to windows. It keeps going back to the Rescue And Recovery program. What can I do?

    Refer to the following guide:

  • Boot into Rescue and Recovery but not Windows

Everytime my pc is powered on or restarted, it boots into Rescue and Recovery, but not Windows.
    What can I do?

    Hi,
first I would like to explain one thing, so that we are on the same page with the RnR partition.
Vista and XP are using different RnR partitions and the location of these aprtitions is placed on the HDD is different way, so that it can be used in conjuction with your Operating system.
So in the time, where you have used the XP and OS, the RnR partition was placed in the partition table on the end/back. DIrectly after you upgraded to the Vista and did not made any changes to the RnR partition, than it is still on the end/back, which is not the corect way. Becase the Vista should use the RnR partition, that should be placed on the begind/start/in the front of all the other partitions.
So in case there was no change made to the RnR partition, like relocation, or reinstall using the Vista RnR version, then you will not be able to boot into it.
So here is what I would advice you to do:
    - reinstall, or download and install the Vista version of RnR (the latest version) => this will rewrite the partition table and in case of need it will create the RnR partition.
    - use bmgr32.exe , which is located on your HDD by default to rewrite the partition table. Please start it from command line in follwing way:
    bmgr32.exe /phil
==> this will bring you all the command line options and you can use it based on this.
    NOTE:
Plase note, that once you captured some backups using the XP version of RnR , or a different version of RnR, then it's not possible to restor the backups using a different version.
Simple: you must use the exact same version of RnR for backup and also for the  restore process.
Let me know, if you have any more informations to this situation.
    Cheers

  • X61s - unable to access Rescue and Recovery from boot

Is there any other way to access the R&R from boot? and what's the unattend answer file anyway?
I'm trying to go to rescue and recovery from boot because my windows wouldn't load.
It shows this message: "Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file [C:Windows\Panther]unattend.xml]. The answer file is invalid"
I want to reinstall windows anyway so I tried going to the R and R page from boot: pressing the Thinkvantage button when it say "to interrupt normal setup... etc." I pressed the button and the message disappears, but it doesn't lead to the R & R page, it just starts windows normally. F8 leads only to more options of loading windows, like safe mode, etc. but non of them works because of the "unattend answer" file.
How do I go to R&R if not through the thinkvantage button?
What is unatend answer file anyway?

    Hi,
RnR is not located in %programfiles%\ThinkVantage
RnR is located in : %programfiles%\Lenovo\
What is the way, how you want to do the backup? Using a rrcmd file or using the basic RnR GUI ?

I am beginning to love lenovo. and vista. I´ve used the boot disk found at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-54483
(vista version), made a disc with it, "fixed" my mbr... and now vista stops booting all together.  something about a missing bootmanager. I love it. really. both. lenovo, and vista.
edit: lucky me, I had a dart cd to repair the boot manager. so I can at least boot again. but, still no solution to my problem... any ideas?
edit 2: I tried again. this time, no error. but still, I have the same problem with a not working thinkvantage. any ideas?
edit 3: seems like the only solution left after reviewing all hints and tips is installing rescue and recovery, but has anyone installed it on a N500 yet? does it work? does it damage the pc? which version should I install, if it works?

  • Help: Dual Boot Vista/XP (multiple partitions) with Rescue and Recovery?

So I re-installed my Thinkpad and want to dual boot Windows XP and Vista Ultimate on separate partitions. I'm using the Windows XP pre-load and a separately licensed Vista Ultimate.
I first installed XP preload and did a backup with RnR. Then I'm installing Vista Ultimate by shrinking the XP partition and creating a new partition for Vista. I plan to use RnR in XP to do another backup from the base and hoping it will backup Vista as well. Will RnR backup both the Vista and XP partition correctly so that when I recovery in the future, it will restore both?
I don't want to blow it and have to redo the whole thing. Help would be much appreciated!
edit: This didn't work, as RnR only allows you to backup as many as partitions as your base image had....

    hi
you say that you have a vista Ultimate did you try making a windows image from the back up and recovery in vista? in that way both of your xp and vista can be save to an hdd or  a set of DVD'S(as a back up image)
else try using acronis true image it should work out ...good luck!
