T400 incredibly slow startup Windows 7

Hello,
i ran into a problem that I am unable to solve myself as its cause is a mystery to me:
I had OEM Vista Ultimate installed on my T400, which worked fine, but ever since I installed Windows 7 today, the windows startup takes unusally long time, get stuck the "starting Windows" screen for about 10 minutes every time. Once it starts it runs OK without any hiccups or lags whatsoever.
I have no clue where the root of this problem can be, maybe this will give you an idea.
I had two T400 lying around, one had faulty headphone jack (stuck somehow, so the computer assumed the headphones are always connected, therefore I couldn't get any sound from the speakers. As the headphone jack is soldered to the motherboard, I needed to replace the whole mobo) and the other one had bad LCD. So I decided to use the functional components to build one fully functional T400 and sell the other one for parts.
So what I did was:
-swapped LCDs (good LCD+good mobo, bad LCD+bad mobo)
-swapped CPUs (because the one with faulty jack had 2,53Ghz - everything except the sound was alright! - whereas the other one had only 2,4Ghz)
-swapped HDDs (as the one with faulty jack was the computer I usually used, it had W7 installed, whereas the other had Vista)
I put them back together, and while the one with Vista booted up quicky as usual (although before, its mobo was used with a faster CPU and Windows 7), the one now with W7 took ages to start up, which has never happened before. I thought it might be because of the CPU (neither reseting BIOS, nor disconnecting CMOS battery helped), so I swapped the CPUs once again (-> back to their original mobos). The faulty machine with Vista still had no problem starting up, but it didn't help the machine running W7.
Here comes the mystery:
I swapped the HDDs too, so the only change to their orginal configuration was the display (swapped faulty 1280x800 TFT for good 1440x900 LED) and after that both of them were able to start up normally.
But once I erased the HDD with Vista on it, which was running fine in the machine where the W7 HDD took ages to start, and reloaded Windows 7 onto that HDD, the problems returned!!!
Now I have two T400s with Windows 7, but one of takes ages to start up.

  • Incredibly slow startup, bizarre noises, and overall weirdness...

I hate to start off a support question like this, and believe me, I feel terrible, but... I just dropped my iBook for the umpteenth time, but on a harder surface than usual. It hasn't had a problem every other time I've dropped it (I'm a bit of a klutz...), but now...
It was pretty much fine a few minutes afterward, but then began to slow down while occasionally making bizarre beeping sounds (which I believe are coming from the hard drive). Annoyed with the slowdown, and unable to get to the shut down options, I shut off the computer and turned it on again. It started up and went to the screen with the Apple logo and began loading... for an eternity. I shut it off again and turned it back on to the same result. So I let it sit and decided to see if it would start up.
It eventually got to the next screen, "Starting Mac OS X," and was much slower than usual. Then my desktop loaded, and the bar at the top of the screen, but the mouse stayed as the spinning rainbow pinwheel. Some desktop icons loaded, and it almost seemed as if it would load completely...
And then the screen went blue and it started loading all over again.
So far, I'm on the second fade-to-blue and the third attempt to start up, and all the while it's making intermittent beeping sounds. I don't want to have to restore the hard drive, as I've got a lot of important info on it... but I have no idea what to do with it and am afraid it can't be fixed without a hard drive replacement... that I don't have the money for...
    Please help. D:

More than likely the slow boot is caused by the system trying to repair the hard drive.
You could try reinstalling the OS. If only the files and file structure are damaged, that should solve the problem. If the hard drive has suffered a hardware failure the reinstall won't solve it.

  • Slow startup- new pavilion with windows 8

Hi there, I have only recently purchased a hp pavilion with the product key being: F5B53EA#ABU
The first few times I turned it on it was incredibly fast and I was impressed. I have moved my document from my old laptop onto it (not very many, just mainly word documents and pictures) and I have already uninstalled unecessary programmes however the start up is very slow compared to what it was before, I have to leave my laptop for 5-7 mins and then come back to see if it has finally started. Any help would be very appreciated.

I understand you are having issues with your computer starting up slowly and are looking for assistance in getting it fixed. I have seen issues where certain Windows components are not re-initializing properly if the Fast Startup option is enabled. This is enabled, by default. Perform the following to disable it:
    Step 1. Open Control Panel.
Step 2. Choose Hardware and Sound / Power Options.
Step 3. Click on Choose what the power button does on the left side menu.
Step 4. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable at the top.
Step 5. Scroll down and Remove the check mark from the Turn on fast startup (recommended) option under Shutdown settings. Select the Save Changes button and exit Control Panel.
Step 6. Shut down (Not Restart) the computer, wait a few minutes and then start the computer.
As well I have seen this issue when people have an Anti-Virus installed with Windows 8. If the issue persists try disabling or uninstalling your Anti-Virus and see if that resolves your slow startup issue.
I believe this will resolve your slow start up issue in Windows 8. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • BootCamp drivers crash Windows 7, slow startup, boot order?, backup drive

I have 3 issues that may be related or possibly not related to each other. I use an iMac (currently with Leopard 10.5.8 on a completely clean installation of both Leopard and Windows 7 on a freshly formatted and partitioned drive).
    Issues:
    1. Before reformatting and installing Leopard and Windows 7, I tried to install Snow Leopard and then Snow Leopard Bootcamp drivers into Windows 7. This crashed Windows 7.
    2. Slow startup of Windows 7 - Drivers needed?
    3. Firewire backup drive never re-mounts after using WIndows and then going back to OS X.
    *Details of issues*:
In the past, before I completely re-installed Leopard 10.5.8 with a new Windows 7, with this same pair of operating systems, I always had a slow startup of Windows 7 on Boot Camp. Sometimes this would take up to 6 minutes to completely open Windows 7. The "Starting Windows" message would appear usually soon, but it would tale a very long time before the Windows logo Flag would appear. The slow startup still continues, even after a complete reinstallation of these on a freshly re-formatted and re-partitioned hard drive (This re-installation was done for reasons shown below).
For a long while I have thought that because I had never installed any BootCamp drivers into Windows 7, then it might start better if I were to install the BootCamp drivers from an installation disk. Thus when I the other day briefly upgraded to Snow Leopard, this time I went ahead while operating under Windows 7 to install into my already existing Windows 7 the set of Boot Camp drivers from the Snow Leopard installation disk. The installation seemed to go well, but it then hung up and never continued when it tried to install the Intel chipset driver. An an hour had passed with no further progress. Thus I force-shutdown the computer, and Windows then never opened until I restarted under safe mode. After that when I would restart Windows 7 "normally", I found also that the Apple wireless keyboard under BootCamp no longer was recognized. The "normal" slow booting of Windows 7 still remained.
Because of I was not sure just what all might have been messed up, and because I am waiting for new versions of several programs that I use to be made as versions compatible with Snow Leopard, I reformatted the complete drive (Both partitions were merged into 1), and then I reinstalled Leopard on a freshly prepared drive, followed by newly installing Windows 7 on a new BootCamp partition. Both systems were fresh installs on a freshly prepared drive and partitions. These were not from clones of the previous installations. This time I did not try to install any drivers from the Leopard disk. The slow booting of Windows 7 continues.
Things I have suspected might cause the slow booting:
    1. Boot order of the Windows partition may be set to look for a CD-ROM before booting from the Windows 7 on the BootCamp Partition. To solve this, I have tried to open the BIOS on startup of Windows 7 in order to set the boot order. I am not sure which function key to press, but in trying several, I have gotten a DOS screen that shows Windows 7 as an option, but nothing else. When I select "Advanced", I get a list that includes "Safe Mode", "Boot Logging", and other items, but not anything for boot order.
    2. The drivers for BootCamp might not yet be made for Windows 7, and I need to wait until these are so that these can be installed. After such, then maybe the slow startup might be fixed?
    3. Possibly my Firewire backup drive interferes (permanently?) with the Windows startup process, because after I use Windows and then go back to OS X, the backup drive (Maxtor OneTouch III firewire drive) will not load on the MacIntosh desktop until I unplug the firewire from both the computer and the Maxtor drive and unplug the power cable to the backup drive, followed by replugging all of this in. (Note: The backup drive is formatted for Macintosh and is never seen as a drive in "My Computer" or in "Network Places" when I operate Windows 7).
Are you able to help/ Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Wilson

    Extra comments;
I also tried the following, which did not fix the startup (*Once up, Windows works well!*):
    1. Checked for file and disk errors (ckdsk?? on startup).
    2. Purged temporary internet and other temporary files (using internet options and disk cleanup utilities)
    3. Cleared out Prefetch files.
    4. Emptied trash.
    5. Under "msconfig", I found 4 items there as startup items. I disabled Adobe Reader and Quicktime helpers, leaving only thus 2 startup items of the 4 enabled (Bulldog and some Microsoft thing).
    6. Defragmented.
    No better results.
    Sincerely,
    Wilson

  • JDev 10.1.2 and Spring 1.2.3: Incredibly slow OC4J startup

I have JDev 10.1.2 which runs many non-Spring apps in the embedded OC4J without incident.
But after an app that uses Spring Framework 1.2.2 or 1.2.3 is added to a Workspace, attempting to run any application, spring-using or not, in that workspace results in an incredibly long startup time for OC4J, typically 160-220 seconds during which JDeveloper becomes unresponsive and the CPU use rises to 100%.
After JDeveloper becomes responsive again, here are the displayed contents of the OC4J server window:
    [Starting OC4J using the following ports: HTTP=65001, RMI=65002, JMS=65003.]

    05/09/01 12:25:38 Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE 10g (10.1.2.0.0) initialized
This problem occurs using JDev 10.1.2 on several workstations. One workstation is FC4, the others are WinXP. We are using j2sdk1.4.2_07 to compile/run on FC4 and the bundled 1.4.2_04 on Windows.
Once the OC4J is started, JDeveloper and applications appear to work fine with no noticable differences in speed. Also, once deployed to an Oracle App Server 10g (w/OC4J 10.1.2), there is no noticable difference in startup time for applications on that server.
Again, I would emphasize that the problem affects all applications in the workspace, not just the one that uses Spring. And if I remove the Spring application from the workspace, OC4J starts quickly again for the other applications. Also, running applications in a one workspace is not impacted by a Spring app in a different workspace.
    Any ideas?

Use Oracle JDeveloper 10.1.3.2 that has both EJB 3.0 and Portlet development support.
JDev 10.1.2 doesn't support JDK 5.0 out of the box so you'll probably have problems with the annotations of EJB 3.0.

  • LCDS startup is slow on Windows 7 PC

    Hi,
We have been using LCDS Express in our product with Tomcat web server. We have been noticing that if we do not start LCDS Message broker
servlet from Tomcat, it starts in ~7 seconds
If we start Message Broker Servelet (and LCDS), startup of Tomcat server is taking ~1 min.
We enabled Flex Server side Logging  and seeing that LCDS is taking time to bring up "rtmp channel" possibly. From the logs it seems like this rtemp channel initialization and listening to port 2038 takes about ~8-10 sec each. Another possible area where it is taking time is probably in initializing remote java classes which provide remove methods (about 75 our own java classes defined in remote-config.xml).
This we are experiencing on Windows 7 PC. Rebooting is also not solving the issue on some of this PC.
Also on some other desktops (Win XP or Win 7), sometimes it gets into this kind of slow startup issue and persistent unless we reboot the PC/laptop.
Is this known issue ? Or Is there something we are doing wrong ? services-config.xml and other config files are pretty much like the default one. Not really modified any core settings of channel or endpoints.
How do we make startup of LCDS faster ?  Currently this delays our application startup due to this underlying problem and it is very fustrating for users to wait such a long time before they can use it.
    thanks for your help.

We only support Windows 7 in LCDS 3.1. Please try with LCDS 3.1 and let us know if you have any problems.
    Thanks,
    Anil

  • PureNetworks Network Magic Significantly Slows Startup in Windows XP

I set up a new hard drive on my laptop. All was running well except during Windows XP startup it seemingly took forever for the wireless services to start up (took approximately 5 minutes after user login for the wireless to work (wired also). I am using WIndows to manage my wireless. I had to turn the PureNetworks Service to Manual from Automatic. My computer startup for wireless access is not almost instantaneous (within 5 seconds of User Login).
Now when I try to use Network Magic (try to open the application, it tells me the service is not running and I have to start it up.
What can be done about having PureNetworks not take so long to have the computer start up if it is set to Automatic?

    Hi peye,
I don't believe the problem is necessary the platform service, but a combination of your Anti-Virus and the Platform Service.
    Try this:
Change Platform to Automatic again. Disable or temporary uninstall your Anti-Virus and see what happens.
    Report back.

  • Firefox works incredibly slow (as in the window is barely functionable, not anything related to bandwitdh speed) when I'm running certain games on my computer.

    Hello,
During the past month i have had a strange problem with my Firefox browser in certain situations. The issue is only apparent when running certain 3D games (Most frequently when I run Diablo III). Whenever these games are loaded my Firefox browser will work incredibly slow. This is not an issue of a bandwitdh problem or such, the loading speed is fine, but the actual mouse clicks, bookmark clicks, keyboard inputs etc. take several seconds to register.
I have tried running Firefox in failsafe-mode which immediately made the problem go away. However, whenever I run it in regular mode the problem will be back even if I disable every single addon and plugin. I have also tried reinstalling both firefox as well as my addons and flash player, the issue stays.
For what it's worth, any other browser I have installed does not experience the problem at all (despite having the same few addons installed - I only have 3 of them).
Does anyone have a clue what the issue might be? Does the failsafe-mode inactivate anything besides the addons and plugins listed in the addon-section?
    Thanks in advance

  • Very slow startup on 2010 iMac

    Hi
I have a medio 2010 iMac 27" and it's a great computer. Still very fast and plenty of power.
From one day to another though, it started booting incredibly slow. Not that I'm sure, but I suspect to begin from right around the time I upgraded to Mavericks. The boot doesn't seem to get slow until it hits OSX (desktop view). But from here on it takes forever until I can start opening programs. Sure I can click the icons in the dock, but the program doesn't open til loooooong after. It never results in a crash... it just takes forever. I estimate the time from when I press the power button till I can start using the computer is around 10 minutes!!!
Then when it's done with the long startup, it works perfectly. No delay or stall what so ever. Just as quick and powerful as ever.
Of course I have tried many things already:
    unplugging all peripheral devices
    clean up in start-up items
    using CleanMyMac
rebooting from "start disk" in system settings
running controll/repair disk permitions and controll/repair disk from disk utilities
resetting the PRAM (cmd+alt+P+R during boot)
this solution as well: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/10/mavericks-issues-and-fixes/#slideid-23467 1
None of it seems to help. I have been encouraged to try to have someone look at my system startup log from the console to see if anything can be discovered from there. Can anyone help me with this? Or maybe someone has another idea for a solution?!
The system startup log goes like this:

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Incredibly Slow with Spinning Ball

In the last week my MacBook Pro has become incredibly slow. I have contacted Apple Support, done a safe start, verified the disk with no issues. Even typing into this box is met with constant pauses and freezes.
Below is a check I did through EtreCheck. Can anyone tell me what the issue may be. This makes no sense to me.

  • Connection to iTunes incredibly slow on a very fast internet connection

My connection to iTunes is incredibly slow. I have tested my internet speed and it is 75Mbps/s. I am currently in Singapore but have a U.S. iTunes account. It takes about 3-4 hours before a standard def TV show is ready to watch on either my iMac, my Macbook pro, or my Apple TV. This never used to be a problem until a couple of months ago, and it is incredibly frustrating. I have both my iMac and my AppleTV connected via ethernet but the situation is even worse over wireless. Does anyone have any ideas? This is killing me!!!

    Hello and welcome...
This may not seem relevant to iTunes but make sure there's enough free space on your Mac's startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro incredibly slow after installing Mavericks

I'm really hoping someone can help me out. As per the subject line, I installed Mavericks on day one (and learned my lesson!).
Since installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro runs incredibly slow. If I open the Mail App and Safari - it almost grinds to a halt. I have the "Memory Clean" App which I now have to run constantly (it appears to help a little) and I try to only launch one app at a time where possible, but it's not really pratical.
As an aside, my MacBook ran really well with Mountain Lion, so there's little doubt to my mind that Mavericks is the culprit.
I'd be eternally grateful for any help & advice :-)
I spotted other people advise running EtreCheck, here are my results:

    CleanMyMac is probably your problem.
    CleanMyMac is crapware.
Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize",  "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people who sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall.
I would try to uninstall it, but if that fails, you may have to erase your HD and do a clean install.
